  New deals
Posted by: themaclad - 18-05-2022, 16:08 - Forum: Cambridge United - Replies (9)

Cambridge United defender Liam Bennett has signed a new two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.

The 20-year-old made 10 appearances in 2021-22, making his English Football League debut in a 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle in February.

He joined the U's from non-league football in 2020 and was elevated to the first-team squad last year.

"He is tenacious and has a focus that all the young players can learn from," said head coach Mark Bonner.

Midfielder Liam O'Neil has become the latest Cambridge United player to agree a new contract with the club.

The 28-year-old has made 146 appearances since arriving from Chesterfield in 2017 and will now stay until at least the end of next season.

Liam Bennett, Adam May, Will Mannion, Harrison Dunk and Greg Taylor have also agreed new deals with the U's.

"I am certain we are a stronger squad with Liam as a part of it," said head coach Mark Bonner.

"His influence on the team, professionalism and character help create the environment that we want."

  Vokes
Posted by: themaclad - 18-05-2022, 16:07 - Forum: Wycombe Wanderers - No Replies

Wales international striker Sam Vokes has agreed a new contract for next season with League One promotion hopefuls Wycombe Wanderers.

The 32-year-old joined the Chairboys from Stoke City last summer and has scored 17 goals in 49 appearances.

After beating MK Dons over two legs, Gareth Ainsworth's side will face Sunderland at Wembley on Saturday with a place in the Championship at stake.

"He's led by example on and off the pitch," manager Ainsworth said.

"Bringing Sam to Adams Park last summer was a big coup for us and I'd say that keeping him here is even more significant, after the year he's had."

Vokes began his career with Bournemouth and had spells with Wolves and Burnley before moving to Stoke in the January transfer window in 2019.

He has played 68 times for Wales, scoring 11 goals - one of them in a 3-1 win against Belgium as they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

"He's shown exactly why he's earned so many caps for his country and played in the Premier League, and he's led by example on and off the pitch," added Ainsworth.

"The owners and I share a plan to get us into the Championship and continue to build this club into something bigger and better than it's ever been before.

"Sam is a key component to making that happen and it's a real mark of the man that he's signed this contract before knowing for certain which division we'll be in."

Oxford United striker Sam Baldock has signed a new two-year contract.

The 33-year-old moved to the League One side on a short-term deal in February after leaving Derby County and scored four goals in seven appearances.

The former Reading, Brighton, Bristol City and West Ham striker grew up as an Oxford United supporter.

"I walked through the door back in February and it felt like the right place straight away," Baldock told the club website.

"The badge has always had a special place in mine and my family's hearts ever since it was the first club we watched live at the Manor."

Baldock has not played since injuring his knee after scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Burton Albion on 5 March.

But U's manager Karl Robinson said Baldock's experience and personality were major reasons why he offered him a fresh contract.

"He's not just a really good player, Sam is also a tremendous character, a winner and a leader," he said.

"He fits in so well with what we are building here and clearly understands what it means to pull on the yellow shirt.

"After three years of going close, this year is all about mentality and there are certain non-negotiables. Some players will leave as a result but Sam will certainly fit in with it straight away.

"The fans took to him immediately and I am sure they will be just as excited to see him sign as we are."

  Bowyer gone
Posted by: themaclad - 18-05-2022, 16:04 - Forum: Salford City - No Replies

Salford City have sacked manager Gary Bowyer after 14 months in charge following the club's failure to reach the League Two play-offs.

The 50-year-old former Blackburn and Bradford boss was initially appointed on a short-term basis in March 2021.

He agreed to a full-time role on a two-year deal that May but could only lead the club to a 10th-placed finish this term, seven points off a play-off spot.

Assistant Billy Barr has also had his contract terminated by the Ammies.

In a statement, Salford said news regarding the managerial position will be announced in due course.

In 2020-21, Bowyer replaced Richie Wellens following his departure by mutual consent, and he went on to lead them to an eighth-placed finish, two points off a play-off place.

Having previously been under-23s manager at Derby County, working under boss Wayne Rooney, Bowyer had been expected to return to the Rams but instead joined Salford on a permanent basis last summer.

However, Salford missed out on a play-off spot again after a mixed season, despite a stronger showing in the second half of the campaign.

'Another summer of change at the Peninsula Stadium'
Analysis - BBC Radio Manchester's Dominic Dietrich

Under Gary Bowyer, Salford City have had a measured approach, which they lacked last season, having appointed four managers across a single campaign.

Injuries to key players like Ian Henderson and summer recruit Connor McAleny contributed to a tough first half of the season, managing only seven wins and 24 goals prior to January.

Their chance to revive any hopes of a promotion push came in the January transfer window as they brought in statement signing striker Matt Smith from Millwall, which followed deals for midfielders Ryan Watson and Stephen Kelly. Once Bowyer had the tools, the results began to follow.

The Ammies lost just three games after the window closed, drawing six and winning nine games and provided the club with hope of finishing in the top seven.

But they just fell short after defeats against rivals in the League Two play-off picture.

Despite missing out, it seemed like Bowyer had built a platform to build on for next season with little upheaval required, but now with his departure, whoever comes in will have their own ideas and it could be another summer of change at the Peninsula Stadium.

  Wayne Brown appointed
Posted by: themaclad - 18-05-2022, 16:03 - Forum: Colchester United - No Replies

Colchester United have confirmed Wayne Brown as their full-time head coach, four months after he was put in charge as interim boss for a third time.

The 44-year-old former U's defender replaced Hayden Mullins, who left in January with the club only three points above the League Two relegation zone.

He guided the team to a 15th-place finish, 17 points clear of danger.

Details of his contract have not been disclosed but assistants Joe Dunne and Dave Huzzey will also be staying.

"When you give an amount of hours and years to a football club, it becomes part of your DNA and makes you want to succeed even more," Brown told BBC Essex.

"I feel really privileged and honoured to be given the opportunity to mange a club like this."

He added: "It's an exciting time for me, for Joe and Dave, to continue this relationship, to evolve together and hopefully keep improving and striving with the team."

Brown played more than 150 games for Colchester and was on the coaching staff from 2013-2018, during which time he had a spell in caretaker charge in the 2015-16 season.

He was managing Isthmian League North Division side Maldon & Tiptree when he was asked by owner Robbie Cowling to return to the club in February 2021 following Steve Ball's departure as boss.

Former Crystal Palace and Watford midfielder Mullins was then given the job the following month, initially in a caretaker capacity, but departed early in the year after only five wins in the club's first 24 league games this season.

Maldon and Tiptree have confirmed former Colchester winger Paul Abrahams as their new manager after being given the job of caretaker when Brown took on his role with the U's.

  Chris Cadden voted Hibs POTY!!
Posted by: 0762 - 17-05-2022, 22:50 - Forum: Hibernian - No Replies

https://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/article/ch...f-the-year

I must say Chris was certainly my pick and IMO a well deserved award based on his many forays down Hibs right flank in lotsa matches. He certainly had a very good season, a good work ethic, and surprised me re his consistent commitment to deliver crosses into opponents' pen boxes. His only weakness is not converting enough goal opps when he gets into some great goal scoring positions. Also good to see Stevie Carr being given the Unsung Hero Award for his efforts in giving a safe haven to the Dnipro orphans. Well done!! Thumb up

And all this at the end of a season in which we reached two cup semi-finals

Prediction League Play Off/Cup final fixtures 2
Posted by: Zinman - 16-05-2022, 23:08 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (11)

apologies as this gets a bit messy trying to find 10 remaining fixtures. I've added the play-off finals but the actual teams won't be known until later this week so feel free to send in your predictions in 2 parts, SCO won't mind! Also, I've added 2 tiebreak questions in case of a draw (clutching at strawsa fter the first leg!). the tiebreak will be used if either of the games are tied after the 2 legs - the second question will only come into play if the first one doesn't produce a winner (and if we're still tied after 2 questions I will admit defeat).

Gamball:
Liverpool - Real Madrid

Others:
Sunderland - Wycombe
Arsenal - Everton
Brentford - Leeds
Brighton - West Ham
Burnley - Newcastle
Crystal Palace - Man Utd
Norwich - Spurs
Huddersfield - Forest/Sheff Utd
Mansfield/Northampton - Swindon/Port Vale

Usual rules re score after extra time.

Tiebreak 1. Minute of the first goal in the Liverpool - Real Madrid game.
Tiebreak 2. Number of corners in the Liverpool - Real Madrid game.
