That game against Leeds 40 years ago

Realised tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of .......... Albion 2 Leeds 0

I'm sure some of you have similar memories....

The joy of avoiding relegation
Leeds slid towards relegation
Their fan pulling down sections of the Smethwick fencing and the mount police preventing a pitch invasion

And all this at the end of a season in which we reached two cup semi-finals

Where did that time go ?

40 years!? I'm old.

I remember being at university and just being able to pick up commentary on BBC Radio Leeds (I was in Nottingham) where they kept going on about the "fantastic" Leeds supporters. They kept pretending nothing was happening even when they pulled doen the fence and the police horses came on. I shared a house with a Stoke fan and we both celebrated when Stoke beat us to send Leeds down the next week.
They say that ignorance is bliss - no wonder so many people are happy.

Lots of similar memories especially from those days I was lucky and unlucky, not to miss a game home or away between 1977 and 1984. However, the relegation avoiding game I remember most was Portsmouth at home 2005, which we won 2-0. For those who were not there, it was the Portsmouth fans that made that game, In a nutshell (if I remember it all correctly) If we won we stayed up, which also relegated Southampton. Before the game a fair few of the Pompey fans, were in the club shop buying up Albion shirts, every time a Portsmouth player committed the smallest foul it was met by chants from the Portsmouth fans of OFF, OFF, OFF. If we were on the attack all you heard was, "let em score" to the tune of 'here we go'. When we did scored, I really don't know if we were happier or the Pompey fans, I guess they really don't like Southampton and it was great the way many joined us for the cerebrations after the game.

I'll see your 40 years and raise you another 14 - 54 years today since we last lifted the FA Cup (and I set out on my doom-laden, Baggie-following journey). Best memory ever of the King.
Looking forward to the next one!

Tomorrow it'll be 139 years since we beat Notts Rangers at Wellington Road in the final of the Wednesbury Charity Cup. Can't believe it's been that long! Gone are the days when you could ride your coach-and-four down to the ground, park in the stables, buy a refreshing pint of nettle & celery pop from the Temperance Bar and then find a convenient chimney-sweep to sit on for the match. The stands would ring with all the old terrace classics like The Referee Is An Onanist and Ee-Aye-Addio, There's A Possibility We'll Win The Cup (If The Lord Of Hosts Deems Us Wretched Sinners Worthy); then everyone would have a grumble about the negative, defensive mentality when the team took the field in a 1-2-7 formation.

Stick the likes of Harold Aston or William Bisseker in a modern team and you'd hear all sorts of rubbish about their fitness levels or their advanced state of decomposition, but I tell you, when Jack Grealish can work a shift down the pit, play ninety minutes in the rain *and* annex Tanganyika all in one day, then he'll be a proper footballer.

Leeds Utd will in my book always be dirty Leeds. Mainly from the 70s era. Loved Clough's summary - "won by cheating".

I think that's why we - of a certain vintage - will always have a definite feeling for LUFC... Confused

I've only just watched last night's Everton v Palace (highlights). What a night for Evertonians!
Now Leeds have got to better Burnley's result this Sunday.
Start every day off with a smile and get it over with

I can recall Leeds playing Bournemouth a lot of years ago, and nearly wrecking the town. So I'd like them to slide down to League 1, or 2, or Nationwide.
