Good win but at a cost
Posted by: silverbaggie - 04-01-2020, 23:50 - Forum: Cheltenham - No Replies

Given our shortage of goals and goal scorers I never expected us to put three goals past Oldham.

In fact it could have been more as we had one disallowed and a couple of other shots just inches wide or over.

My doubts about new signing Alfie May proved to be ill founded for, on his debut, he was a real livewire; harassing the Oldham defence at every opportunity.

He scored the all important second goal;running the ball into the net past a strangely immobile Oldham defence. Hardly goal of the season but a tap in from about a yard out. Nevertheless still very welcome.

One desperate problem was that goalkeeper Scott Flinders was injured and carried off on a stretcher early in the second half. It looks as if he has broken his leg.
I feared the worst as young substitute goalie Rhys Lovatt has been very nervous and unsure in the few games he has had this season.

Fortunately the defence marshalled the Oldham forwards well and the away side managed only one shot at goal which had Rhys making a magnificent full stretch save to turn the ball around the post.

All in all a very welcome three points as wins at the Jonny Rocks stadium have been hard to come by recently.

My thoughts however are with Scott. Just hoping that he is not out for the rest of the season. Sad

  Pemberton 1 Sheridan 0

The man who should have got the job last year shows the dour faced numpty how its done. Play the players in their natural positions, ditch the nepotism and bring back the best midfielder (Wedgbury) from Sheridans scrap heap and hey presto you have a win.

Ok maybe not that simple but we actually wanted that one. We played as a team, we saw the game out and we looked fairly comfortable. The one negative was the crowd (well 2 if I include the ref but am getting used to totally biased refereeing in this division). 3400 odd I think they announced which was a big disappointment for me and probably our new owners. Those who went got behind the team and it was a great game to watch. For the record Sutton were no slouches but we were just better.

Just heard Pembertons interview on Radio Sheffield. Cant do a link thing but have a listen if you get the chance. He's the man for me.
Buzzing tonight. First game in over 3 months and boy does the beer taste good. Even Fondops sending off cant take the edge off it.
2 weeks off now, it will give him the time he needs to up the fitness levels and find the workers and the shirkers.

The future looks bright the future is Pemburton.

RVP not on Solskjaer's "good books"!!
Posted by: 0762 - 04-01-2020, 17:38 - Forum: Manchester United - No Replies

It looks like Van Persie's scathing comment re OGS's smiling demeanour during his post-match interview at the Emirates Stadium has "hit a chord" and OGS has gone away "in the huff". Lets face it, United were humiliated again "away from home" and made Arsenal look good!!! Also Pogba is clearly a problem player and that issue needs to be redressed asap!! THERE IS NOTHING TO SMILE ABOUT AND RVP RECOGNISED THAT FACT EVEN IF IT WAS EVEN A RUEFUL SMILE!!

  Brunty
Posted by: BaggieSteve - 03-01-2020, 23:46 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (4)

I’m sure everyone had heard the rumour of Chris Brunt possibly going to the elephant’s graveyard known as Stoke City. I’ll be honest and say that, whilst I was disappointed that Fletcher and Berahino went there, it didn’t exactly ruin my day. However, if Brunty was to go there I’d be absolutely gutted. I love the man, I believe he’s a legend at our club and I’d hate to see him playing anywhere else. I understand why he might want to go in order to get playing time but I’d bloody hate it.
Anyone else feel like me?

So far the candidates who have put themselves forward are:

Keir Starmer
Clive Lewis
Emily Thornberry
Jess Phillips

Talk of Ian Lavery thinking about entering the race but Rebecca Long-Bailey who is popular with the Corbynistas hasn't declared yet that she is standing. Lisa Nandy is expected to announce soon that she's standing.

Charlton vs WBA - Double Match Thread

The peculiar cup curse that dogs Albion has struck for the second time this season and the umpteenth time in recent years, forcing us to play the same fixture twice in a week as we double up our visits to the Valley with an FA Cup tie against Charlton on Sunday and a league match against them the following Saturday. For nostalgia buffs, there's at least a minor sense of history to the cup game as it's now been exactly thirty years since Albion faced First Division Charlton in the same competition at the Hawthorns in 1990, winning 1-0 on a barely-playable quagmire pitch; one of the last bright moments we had before the worst nosedive in the club's history. Fingers crossed that our league fortunes will be considerably better this time around, though the struggle for form over the last month remains a concern. If anyone in blue and white fancies doing an Earnie down in South London next week, it'd be a massive help...

FA Cup 3rd Round - Saints v Terriers
Posted by: Amelia Chaffinch - 02-01-2020, 22:29 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (12)

We have never played Southampton in the FA Cup.

We have only met once in the League Cup in the 1994/95 season. They won that 5-0 on aggregate with all 5 goals coming from Matt Le Tissier.

Our most recent meeting, and it is recent, was on the last day of the premier league season; 12th May '19. We drew 1-1 and our equaliser came from Alex Pritchard.

Only £10 for SC holders and concessions available, too.

Kick-off is at 15:01 for all 3rd round ties for us to take a minute to think about mental health as part of the Heads Up campaign.

We have each won the FA Cup once.

Southampton beat Man Utd 1-0 in 1976 and were runners-up in 1900 v Bury, 1902 v Sheffield Utd and 2003 v Arsenal.

We won it 1-0 in 1922 against PNE and were runners-up 1920 v Aston Villa, 1928 v Blackburn Rovers, 1930 v Arsenal and 1938 v PNE.

The FA Cup is the oldest national cup competition in the world and has been contested since the 1871 to 72 season. The first winners were Wanderers FC and the club has reformed to continue the name and now play in the Surrey South Eastern Combination League.

Wanderers FC 1872

QUIZ

Without a sneaky peak on the web, can you answer the following:

1. As well as Wanderers FC, who else has won FA Cup in 3 consecutive years?

2. Which 2 teams have had the most FA Cup final appearances?

3. Which club has the most years between wins? (that record will obviously be taking by us in 2020)

4. Who was the youngest player to score in a final?

5. Which player has been in the most winning finals? (Clue: at 2 clubs)

Top scorers for Southampton are Danny Ings on 15, James Ward-Prowse on 4 and Nathan Redmond on 3. Whether they'll bother playing the likes of Ings on Saturday remains to be seen.

As far as their premier league status goes, they are comfortably mid-table in 12th place on 25 points.

I'm done there... I don't think any of us care about this match. We have to worry about staying in the Championship. I think we will put out some young ones on Saturday and possibly a few of our overpriced prima donnas if we haven't already got rid.

Happy New Year!
