Manager

Coaching career
Barnsley
Heckingbottom took the opportunity to gain an academic understanding of football coaching, to set his CV apart from other managers competing for jobs. He completed his BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2013, followed by an MSc in Sport Coaching in 2016, by which point the university had been renamed Leeds Beckett University.[28]

He went on to work as a coach with professional club Barnsley's development squad, and was appointed caretaker manager of the first team after Danny Wilson was sacked in 2015. He was not appointed on a permanent basis in favour of Lee Johnson, though was appointed in the caretaker manager role once again the following year after Johnson left to manage Bristol City. During the latter spell, he guided Barnsley to a 3–2 win against Oxford United in the Football League Trophy final[29] and promotion to the Championship by beating Millwall 3–1 in the League One play-off final.[30] His success as caretaker, leading Barnsley to their first cup final victory since 1912 and promotion to the Championship, led to his being appointed head coach on a permanent basis.[31]

The good form and results continued for the first half of the 2016–17 Championship season, as the club ended 2016 in ninth position. Heckingbottom was awarded Sports Hero of the Year by The Yorkshire Post.[32] Heckingbottom signed a new rolling contract at Barnsley on 2 February 2018,[33] but he left the club days later to take a similar position with Leeds United.

Leeds United
On 6 February 2018, Heckingbottom was announced as the new head coach of Leeds United on an 18-month contract.[34] In his first match as head coach, Leeds lost 2–1 to Sheffield United,[35] and finished 13th in the 2017–18 EFL Championship league table. Heckingbottom blooded youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell as first-choice goalkeeper and also gave debuts to academy players Tom Pearce, Paudie O'Connor, Hugo Díaz and Ryan Edmondson.[36] Heckingbottom integrated further academy players with the first team during a controversial post-season tour of Myanmar.[37][38] Heckingbottom was sacked by Leeds on 1 June 2018, after just four months with the club, and was succeeded by Marcelo Bielsa.[39]

Hibernian
Heckingbottom was appointed head coach of Scottish Premiership club Hibernian on 13 February 2019.[40] The club went on an unbeaten league run, and Heckingbottom won the Premiership Manager of the Month award for March 2019.[41] Two days later, Heckingbottom won his first Edinburgh derby match as Hibs manager against Hearts at Tynecastle.[42] Hibs finished in fifth position, but Heckingbottom was unhappy that the team "downed tools" in the last few matches of the season.[43]

Hibs won only one of their first eleven league matches in the 2019–20 season. Heckingbottom was sacked on 4 November following a 5–2 defeat by Celtic in a League Cup semi-final, with the team sitting in 10th place in the league.[44]

Sheffield United
Heckingbottom was appointed as under-23s lead coach at Sheffield United in July 2020.[45] After first-team manager Chris Wilder left the club by mutual consent in March 2021, with the team bottom of the Premier League and 12 points adrift of safety, Heckingbottom took interim charge until the end of the season.[46][47] United lost 5–0 to Leicester City in his first match in charge,[48] and relegation to the Championship was confirmed after four more defeats.[49] Sheffield United won three of their last six matches, and Heckingbottom was reportedly shortlisted for the permanent position, but former Fulham manager Slaviša Jokanović was appointed instead, with Heckingbottom returning to his previous role as the under-23s manager at the club.[50]

On 25 November 2021, Heckingbottom was appointed manager of Sheffield United, this time on a permanent basis, on a four-and-a-half year deal following the sacking of Jokanović.[51] In his first game in charge, the Blades beat Bristol City 2–0.[52] The team ended the season in fifth place, subsequently qualifying for the promotion playoffs, though they lost to Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.[53]

An impressive start to the 2022–23 season saw Heckingbottom awarded the EFL Championship Manager of the Month award for August 2022 after picking up fourteen points from seven matches.[54]

PNE host Championship table toppers Sheffield United this weekend in the final game before the international break.

In The Dressing Room

Ryan Lowe is again looking at picking from almost a fully-fit squad, with Ben Woodburn the only doubt.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who has been out of action since the win at Coventry at the end of August, has stepped up his recovery from injury and is now back out on the grass.

Andrew Hughes will be pushing for a start after making his return from a shoulder problem off the bench midweek, while Emil Riis could make his 100th appearance for Preston North End in this fixture.

A Look At Our Visitors

After losing in the Play-Offs to Nottingham Forest last season, Sheffield United have picked themselves up and become the early pace setters in this Championship campaign.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side have taken 20 points from their opening nine fixtures, sitting as the division’s second-highest scorers, while also posing the second meanest defence in the league – bettered only by PNE.

The Blades crucially held on to key players during the summer transfer window, the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge, while adding defensive sensation Anel Ahmedhodžić to their ranks.

One To Watch

A real fan favourite and one for the future, Iliman Ndiaye has been in superb form for Sheffield United so far this season, with four goals to his name.

The forward featured heavily during the last campaign, scoring seven times in 30 league games, but his performances have stepped up a level this term, bringing much more than goals to his game.

At the age of 22, he’s got plenty of strings to his bow – able to run the channels, carry the ball with great skill, and also drop deep for his side when needed – and it appears just a matter of time before he reaches the top flight.

Match Officials

On Saturday, Jeremy Simpson will referee a Preston North End game for the second time this season.

The previous occasion was the goalless draw against Hull City at Deepdale earlier this season, while Simpson also took charge of three PNE fixtures last campaign.

So far this term, he has refereed six games, showing 29 yellow cards in that time. He will be assisted on Saturday by Nigel Lugg and Lee Venamore, with Ben Toner on fourth official duties.

MACS VIEW

Do well to get something from this, playing well this season are the Blades, personal view Fernandez should start and move Brady further forward, the natives will soon start to get restless if we continue in the vein of zero goals

Great bloke, retiring for all the right reasons (see article!), great keeper too. IMO the best we've had for the last 40 years or so.

Kick-off 15:00 UK Time
Saturday 12/08/22

Town welcome them "furrinners" from that there Welsh Wales to The Principality of Yorkshire (are you sure about that? Ed) on Saturday.
Well we got rid of The Grand Old Duke of York so we must be due another Prince in return soon, surely?
Have they any spare 'uns down in that there Larndan?
Edwood the Usually Unready dun't seem too over worked reet now. He'll do.
Failing that, the ginger one that lives in LaLa Land.

Let's see, what has happened in the last few days.

The Prince of Wales and his assistant have done a Dr. Who and morphed/rejennyrated into younger versions of their former selves.
All done at the stroke of (what was later to become a very leaky) pen. No magic sonic screwdrivers were harmed in this transition.

[Image: 326-3269931_sonic-screwdriver-doctor-who...driver.png]
Royal pen and sonic screwdriver.

Wonder if he'll be giving up his Club Seats at Wembley and his Twickers Debentures then as he'll now surely need some posh seats in the stands in Cardiff?
Plus he'll have the added expense of new kits for the kids. Just what he needs in these times of a financial crisis. Doh

The original PoW, the one with the big ears that just got promoted, obviously still uses the same brand of dodgy fountain pens we used to use at school before it was accepted that BiC had actually invented a far better replacement (that all the teechurs used) and in multiple colours too. BiC's only leak about once/year versus at least once per week for the inky boys, but boy are they gooey when they do and they normally fart totally in the wrong direction.

Town still haven't won a game since we beat Stoke, Cardiff have won at Boro, 2-3, though that was also their fist win since beating Brum the same day we beat Stoke.
Prior to the Boro game they'd only scored 4 league goals in 7 games all season. Not that we've much to shout about in that department.  Huh

The BBC are still playing the same stuff they started showing last Thursday night/Friday morning on an interminable loop. They just change the camera angle slightly every other day and move the reporters further down the queue or river bank to make it look all new. Elsewhere in the world, everyone else is allegedly watching BBC World News, so there's nothing going on anywhere else that matters, including where other than another bloody long queue that we always like to join. Is there an Ice Cream van at the other end selling Thatcher's Mr. Whippey? Yes, she was responsible for helping to invent that abomination too. They have however gone back to doing regular weather forecasts after nobody missed them (be honest) for at least two days. We know the weather is usually going to be crap but it's nice to be told just how crap every 30 minutes or so.

Just in case you missed the important news in amongst this wall to wall stuff on the news - Danny Boy got the tin-tack after losing at home to Wigan. After seeing/hearing his post match interviews, I think he knew what was coming. Easy to say in hind-sight I know and the lad's not daft, but possibly the right bloke at the wrong time given his lack of (first team coaching/managing) experience and the fact that our recruitment team brought in a load of already injured players that couldn't do anything to improve an already demoralised squad. What could possibly go wrong? How did they get that lot past the insurance company? Um, interim manager, if it goes well, give him the job, if it doesn't park him back with the reserves maybe? No, pay him off until he gets another job and pay someone else with more experience to do what they could have been hired for in the first place.

Buy it cheap, buy it twice.

See our last match thread for more comments. http://www.sportsbabble.co.uk/showthread...679&page=2

Not the first to be sacked by Deano while Deano was away enjoying his holibobs, he might not be the last.

Showing no respect

In the race to look the daftest in the name of "showing some respect", it appears British Cycling are in line for the gold medal. After the FA, P(D)L and EFL needlessly told everyone football was off last weekend, British Cycling decided it would be disrespectful to ride a bike on Monday 19th, even if you normally ride one to work and still have to go to work.

They've since back-pedalled a bit on that (see what I did there?) but are still saying it would be disrespectful to go on a club ride that day with your mates. Well, Monday is now a Bank Holiday, Charlie boy approved it - meaning I can't earn a bean, thank you very much - so if I want to get on my bike for a bit of free wheeling that day, I will.

Norwich City Council were front runners for a long while, closing their bike racks from 9th to 23rd September for no obvious reason at all, however they were pipped at the line by the numpties above. I mean, if you can't ride a bike, why on earth would you need a place to park it?

The local golf courses are almost completely booked up already for Monday. Funny how that works, but to be fair I've never seen a cyclist on a golf course with a bag of clubs on his/her back, so I doubt I'd see one on Monday either. The R&A seem to have caught the mood of their members, given that the most infamous Royal that was recently a member-on-high is now persona-non-grata in R&A HQ at St. Andrews (oh the irony) after being caught marking his card with the wrong score on the (ahem) 17th hole.  Whistle

Forcing a 96 year old very frail woman, (still mourning her late husband's death from last year), to shake the hand of a pillock who partied the night away the night before her husband's funeral, after which she was then made to sit on her own for the funeral without a family member allowed to sit next to her for comfort or support. The self-same pillock that had repeatedly lied to her personally, let alone lied to Parliament afterwards (and often before). Then, less than 30 minutes later, being forced to shake the hand of what/who might be described as his "evil twin sister", if it wasn't for the accent and maybe age. Collectively these acts would surely have resulted in the fittest of 96 year old's losing the will to live. Apparently it sadly came to pass less than two days later that she did lose the will to live, based on what I've seen on the tellybox and in the absence of anything formal from Buck House (nowt new there then).

These comments have been pre-modded and are apparently not allowed in this thread as it's classed as some kind of anti-government or Republican protest or other.

Oh!

Politics on a match thread? Tut, tut, well I never.  Smartass

In other news ....

On the tellybox

Not showing anywhere at the moment other than iPlayer, if you are lucky and maybe living abroad. It might be elsewhere on t'interweb if you know where to look. Chances of getting commentary in the stadium these days on Radio Local are slim to non-existent. I pay my Licence Fee for a reason, clearly this isn't it. Even with the Bratfud City DAB frequency open last time at home, it kept cutting out. Pathetic.

Latest news

It appears our postponed match at Coventry has been pencilled in for Tuesday 24th January, this will give us 3 away games on the bounce after our coast to coast trips to Hull and Blackpool. According to the QPR website our game down there will be 8th November.

Did I miss these somewhere else earlier?

Did I mention Schoffer in that rant above? Oh yes, so next subject please.

Town's latest charidee fundraiser - Walk 4 Pounds to raise money for the same causes we do on our Players 4 Pounds thread, must have some cunning detours or involve a lot of walking round in circles. The Long Route, from Menston is advertised at 25 miles and The Short Route from Valley Parade at 15 miles. When I Google Map these I get 19 miles and 12-13 miles at best and obviously only 7 miles from the start to Valley Parade. These must be Boothy miles. Big Grin

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

No major changes here, Pearson apparently still nobbled and Hogg won't be fit until after the International Break

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

Other than that, no further injuries other than those bought with injuries as a bonus.

Last time out

Did I mention we came 2nd again?

Did I mention Cardiff came first, after taking a 0-3 lead at Boro and nearly blowing it, winning 2-3? Can you imagine had it happened, taking a half-time lead and ending up drawing? Not like we'd ever, ever do that, not even against the Baggies,  Blush  but Cardiff hung on for the win this time.

Musical Interlude

Well there's a shy lass from Tiger Bay who wore green wellies at Galsto .....

There's tidy, maybe even half-tidy for an old'un - she took her wellies off for that one by the look of it.

It's about 6 years since I last did this as an away fixture, but I did it last season at home so I may repeat myself here ..no apologies.

It Might get Manic if I try to make this a Design for Life, but as said before they are from up in The Valleys from Blackwood .....

Hell, I've a vid to spare at the moment .....

The Sack Race

I think I may have mentioned the latest victim once or twice already.

The red hot favourites for the luke warm seat on the bench currently are :-

Well, we've another thread for that

Wagbo odds on and 25/1 the field as they used to say - the truly desperate are 33/1 - no you don't need to know who.

How ironic that the hot favourite had just signed off on selling his house when he came over the other week. !?!?  Sick

Then again ........... some folk don't believe in coincidences and everything happens for a reason, just saying.

So Warnock it is then. Whistle

Tables & Form

That win moved the Bluebirds up to 15th on 11 points. Town are still stuck in 23rd with only Coventry being worse (still) with two home games in hand plus one against us.

[Image: sAz8rJQ.jpg]  [Image: Dl5hVpe.jpg]

A lack of green bands on our results explains exactly why we are where we are.

[Image: gtU4CgG.jpg]  [Image: rQAPRLB.jpg]

Innies and Outies

They paid about £0.5M for Kion Etete from Spurs U21's and and unknown free for Callum Robinson from the Baggies. I guess they spent the unknown fee they got for Sean Morrison - oh, wait - he hasn't got a club yet, there wasn't one. No, more likely the brass they saved on letting Alex Smithies leave, as he was their top earner, and Morrison was on a nice little earner too. Robinson has a market value of north of £4m (Transfermarkt), but I doubt Cardiff paid close to that.

For some reason, the expensive Etete isn't in this list

Who's banging 'em in

Their 7 goals are spread between the 5 below

They can't all lose

Brum play Coventry in another Muddled England derby, Swansea play Hull in another Yorkshire - Welsh Wales fixture and Boro play Rotherham in another Principality of Yorkshire derby.

We've played 'em before

Town lead the head2heads by a short nose. We beat them at home last season (for a change), the first time in 8 attempts.

Next up?

Reading away, 1st October. There's a trivial break for international games going on.

Pressers

We're back to Esperanto again, Narcis is in the hot seat today.

She couldn't have jinxed it all this time since could she? I'd prefer to think that England have just been crap for the most part, but who knows?

  Clash of the Legends

I have received an e-mail from the Albion offering me the chance to pre order a clash of the legends Tee shirt, they look great, their £19.99 each.

But I have an issue with them ..... You buy either a Brunty shirt or a Mozza shirt. As an Albion fan of fifty years I would want a shirt with them both on.
They are both legends, heros, fantastic players people ambassadors of our club and I love them both. I will not choose one over the other.

Come on Albion give us a shirt where we can pay homage to them both.

Albion til I die

It is not about cost, although in times of a cost of living crisis families are struggling. How do you choose , and will they say player A had x amount of shirts purchased, player B only had y purchased, therefore player A is more popular than player B and the fans favourite.

A joint shirt with both legends on, pleeeaaasssseeee!

John Sheridan will step down as Oldham Athletic manager by mutual consent after Saturday's National League home game with Eastleigh.

The 57-year-old, who is in his sixth spell in charge, has won only two of eight National League games this season following relegation from League Two.

Former Latics player Sheridan will have the chance to say goodbye to supporters after a farewell game in charge.

"Shez will forever be a Latics legend," the club said in a statement.

"Having had the chance to assess where the club is at and what changes are required, both the board and John feel that someone else is needed to take on the major challenge of restoring the club's fortunes on the field.

"To allow him the send-off he deserves and to give fans the opportunity to show their appreciation, John has agreed to take charge for one last time at our home match with Eastleigh on Saturday.

"We would place on record our thanks to John for his efforts. He came out of retirement in January because he felt a sense of duty to try and keep the club in the EFL."

Oldham were taken over by the Rothwell family at the end of July, ending the four-and-a-half-year ownership of Abdallah Lemsagam.

This year's theme is Flower Of Scotland, with the Thistles from Strathspey, Buckie and Hutchievale as well as Open Goal Broomhill FC and Dundonald Bluebell FC. Last year's featured teams of Hawthorn, Rose and Fairydean are all there too.

For all games this year, there will be no replays with all games being decided on the day by extra-time and penalties, if necessary.

The First Round games will be played over this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the televised game tomorrow night at 7.45pm being between Pollok and Huntly on BBC Scotland (according to the SFA website). Needless to say my BBC Scotland scheduling does not agree, but no doubt many programmes will be moved around at short notice until after Monday.

  "TIME, Mr Bruce"??
Posted by: drewks - 15-09-2022, 19:26 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (25)

Thought we could do with this thread!

For what it's worth, I've never liked him - always, IMHO, been unconvincing at best.
I'm not advocating we should necessarily go with the bloke but 20 years ago, Steve Cotterill at Cheltenham recruited a whole squad very quickly; they weren't necessarily the best players but their attitude and commitment was second to none.
These players got them through what was The Conference and into the Football League for the first time, winning the FA Trophy on the way.

It seems that Mr Bruce HAS got (potentially) some very good players for the league we are in, but he just cannot motivate them. If this is consistently the case then surely he has to go.

As has been said on the other thread though, with the equally dire board we seem to have at the moment, who would we end up with?

LAST MATCH

Back to playing football and we got back to winning ways with a dominant performance as we swept aside Morecombe. We were on the front foot from the off but despite having 14 attempts we could only put 2 on target, which there keeper saved. Onto the second half and we continued our dominance but were testing there keeper more. But we had to wait until the 70th minute before we took the lead, Windass heading in Bazza's cross. A few mins later and it was 2, Byers this time heading in Bazza's corner. We made it 3 when Smith made some space in the box and finished clinically.

THE MATCH

Up next the league leaders as Ipswich make the trip to Hillsborough. They have made a great start to the season winning 6 of there first 8 games and drawing the other 2. Connor Chaplin is there leading scorer with 6 goals and 1 assist. They are managed by Kieran McKenna who has been in charge since 2021. They missed out on the playoffs last season and will be looking to progress this season and with the start they have made they should be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.
