2025 is upon us, and so Albion don the sacred striped armour, consult the Lady in the Cut, pull the sword from the stone (or the ball from the boulder?) and embark once again on our romantic and ever-doomed quest to regain the grail that's eluded us for nearly fifty-seven years. But we'll be doing so without the guiding hand of any wise wizard: Raphael Wicky looks somewhat unlikely to become our Merlin from Berlin (not least because he's actually Swiss), likewise Johnny Heitinga our Percival from the Mersey-val, and though Dutchman Rene Hake now stands as favourite - which is frankly less Camelot, more dam-a-lot - any appointment at this stage wouldn't come in time to have the new management team in place for Saturday's tie. So all in all, we're fortunate to have someone with the ex-calibre of Chris Brunt to lead us into this opening battle.

Which is liable, alas, to end in tears regardless. Opponents Bournemouth continue to enjoy their Premier League existence, presently placed in 7th with no reason whatsoever not to have a crack at the cup this season; we're winless on their turf in all competitions since August 2011, and of our last sixteen cup ties against Premier League sides, we've won only three (with just one - versus West Ham in 2020 - achieved as an upset from the Championship). We've also met the Cherries in the FA Cup only twice in history, on both occasions at Dean Court: to a soundtrack of Steps and Fatboy Slim, a certain Eddie Howe knocked us out the last time on 2nd January 1999, so you have to travel all the way back to 8th January 1955 for our sole victory against the team then known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, undoubtedly helped along by the strains of Dickie Valentine and his Finger of Suspicion (shortly before Dickie was advised that if he wanted to remain the team physio and avoid a prison sentence, he should stick to his Magic Sponge instead).

With no replays anymore, if we could go the distance and take it to extra-time or even penalties then it'd be a decent showing. An unlikely hope in itself, but then, unlikely hopes are what our grail quest's always made of.

  Peake deal
Posted by: themaclad - 09-01-2025, 20:24 - Forum: Tamworth - No Replies

Tamworth manager Andy Peaks has signed a new full-time contract to run until 2027, three days before their FA Cup third-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

Peaks has been in charge since February 2022 and led them to back-to-back promotions, including winning last season's National League North title.

They reached round three by knocking out Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion, both League One clubs.

The 53-year-old former AFC Rushden & Diamonds boss will leave his job as a support worker at Tresham College in Kettering, Northamptonshire, in February to focus full-time on The Lambs.

"I am delighted to have accepted the offer to go full-time with the club, which will allow me to focus and concentrate on securing the clubs position within the National League," Peaks said.

The sold-out tie against Spurs - which kicks off at 12:30 GMT on Sunday - is the club's biggest since facing Everton in the third round in 2011-12.

Tamworth are 16th in the National League table and go into the game after being knocked out of the FA Trophy by Sutton United last weekend.

LAST MATCH

We threw 3 points away thanks to a missed penalty, hitting the woodwork 3 times and poor defending again. We got off to a great start, Valery firing home after good work by Charles & Musaba. We then had a great chance to make 2 when we awarded a penalty, but Ugbo ballooned his effort over the bar after the players asked him to take it. Onto the 2nd half and we had chances to make it 2 but were denied by the woodwork twice. We then decided to let Millwall score after we did our usual when defending a set piece and Honeyman scored. Musaba then hit the woodwork and Millwall then took the lead when Wintle fired in from the edge of the box. But we managed to get a point when youngster Otegbayo fired in at the back post from a cross.

THE MATCH

A break from the league as we travel down to Coventry in the FA Cup. The Sky Blues have had a disappointing season and currently lie in 16th place in the league, which led to Mark Robins getting sacked and to be replaced by Frank Lampard. He has had a mixed start to his reign, won 3, drew 3 and lost 3. I think Coventry should have enough to stay away from a relegation dogfight. We won here earlier in the season, Charles with an injury time winner and we still owe them for that quarter final defeat at Hillsborough back in 1987, the year they went on to win the Cup. There leading scorer is Wright with 7 goals and 1 assist.

Shrewsbury Town v Huddersfield Town
Sky Bet League One
Saturday January 11th - 15:00 ko
at the Croud Meadow

Huddersfield Town travel to Shrewsbury in Shropshire to the New Meadow on Saturday afternoon for a game of football.

Following a fantastic, maybe fortunate win, down at Wycombe on Tuesday night, the Terriers travel full of optimism. We are now on a run of 15 games unbeaten in the league and also a sequence of four consecutive league away wins. Now I don't want to tempt fate but, the club record for away wins on the bounce is six from back in the days when wor Lee Clark was our leader. Not even the greats of the 1920s managed six. Our next three away matches are Shrewsbury, Blackpool and Northampton.

Right, that's enough fate tempting for now. Will this game at the Meadow even go ahead? Am I tempting fate again by posting this match thread on Thursday? The forecast for Shropshire on Saturday is very cold, with a high of only one degree. Doesn't sound very likely. But they managed to get a game on at Rochdale last night, so the Shrews have no excuse.

Any team news? No not yet. The Manager of the Month nominated Michael Duff will be having his press conference later today, so hopefully he'll be reporting a clean bill of health with Michal Helik making a miraculous recovery from whatever ailed him the other night and Brodie Spencer not being injured after limping off at Wycombe. Well let's hope so.

Head to Head

The head to head is level pegging with 10 wins each and 5 draws.

Apart from the one we won this season, 1-0 with a Callum Marshall goal, I can't remember any of the other victories. But there are some horrendous defeats that are permanently etched in my brain.

Back in the 1980s, when Mick Buxton was king, Shrewsbury Town haunted him. There was a famous FA Cup 3rd round match at Leeds Road in 1980/81 which we got stuffed in. I have to point out though that at this time, we were a division below them as the Shrews had been in the 2nd Division (now Championship) for a couple of seasons after winning the 3rd Division title in 78/79. We were in the old 3rd Division, having recently won the 4th Division title.

Anyway the game became famous in pub quizzes as we became the only team to have conceded three goals against three different goalkeepers. I remember the Town goalies, but I apologise that I've no idea who scored the Shrewsbury goals. They went one up early on, scoring against Andy Rankin. He then picked up an injury which would keep him out for the rest of the season and was replaced between the sticks by our super striker Steve Kindon. If you don't know Kindon, kids, he was built like Laurent Depoitre but had the speed of Usain Bolt. And he knew where the back of the net was.

Unfortunately, he was soon picking the ball out of the back of our net as the Shrews went two up soon after half time. Now chasing the game, Buxton wanted Kindon back up front and so made the decision to put Mark Lillis in goal. This was with all of them wearing the same green jersey by the way. No goalkeepers on the bench back then, they just pulled the shirt over their outfield shirt.

Anyway, Lillis let one in and so we lost 3-0.

Things got worse. After our promotion to Division Two, we got tonked twice by them, both by five goals to one, in 84/85.

The most infamous one though was in the 1994/95 promotion season when we lost under water at Gay Meadow by a 2-1 scoreline. It of course, became famous for the half time Neil Warnock rant.

Here you go......

That was the last time we were in the same league, but they did join the list of lower league teams that have humiliated us in the League Cup back in 2016. They scored in the first minute at their place, before Elias Kachunga equalised for us. That didn't help though as Louis Dodds went and got a late winner for the Shrews.

If we do win this weekend, it will be the first time we've done the double over them since 1986/87 when we beat them 2-1 twice. Duncan Shearer bagged both in the home game. He scored in the away game as well, as did Ian Banks.

So what's going on down at the old Gay Meadow? Managed nowadays by Gareth Ainsworth, the front man of rock band The Cold Blooded Hearts.

Earlier in his career, he was in a band called APA with Wimbledon teammates Chris Perry and Trond Andersen. He later joined the band Dog Chewed the Handle, named after a Terrorvision song, after answering an advert in Loot.

The band were invited to support Bad Manners on tour but rejected the offer due to clashes with Gareth's footballing career. The band later split, with he and another member forming a new band, Road to Eden. In November 2019, he joined The Cold Blooded Hearts and they released their debut album in July 2023, produced by Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes.

Shrewsbury profiles:

Jamal Blackman signed for Shrewsbury just before Christmas and made his debut in the 2-2 draw away at Wigan.

He's 31 now, having joined the Chelsea Academy at the age of 13. In nine years there, he only made the first team bench once and eventually left in 2021 without even one single first team game. Not even a Cup game. He didn't completely waste his time though, having eight loan spells, taking in such exotic places as Middlesbrough, Östersunds in Sweden, Wycombe Wanderers, Sheffield United, Leeds United, Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands, Bristol Rovers and Rotherham United.

Following the loan at the New York Stadium, his contract at Chelsea was up and so when he was released he went over to the States, playing for Bob Bradley at Los Angeles FC.

He only played 8 games there, but that was just before his career hit it's height when in 2022 he signed for Championship high flyers, Huddersfield Town. Lee Nicholls was our number one, so he had to sit on the bench most of the time. He played in the FA Cup games against Barnsley and Nottingham Forest and kept a clean sheet in his one league game, the 2-0 home win against Bristol City, as Nicholls was rested for the Play Offs.

He was on the bench at Wembley in the game we don't talk about and was then released. He then had a season at Exeter City and last season was at Burton Albion.

Shrewsbury in popular culture: The group T'Pau were formed in Shrewsbury in 1986, with Carol Decker on vocals. Their first hit was Heart and Soul, which was a flop, but after it was featured in a jeans commercial, became a hit, reaching number 4 in the UK Hit Parade.

The next single, China In Your Hand, reached number one and suddenly Carol was a superstar. The hits dried up though, with just one more in the Top Ten, Valentine.

They're still going though after all these years, but with only Decker and Ronnie Rogers of the original line up left.

MANAGER

Nathan Jason Jones (born 28 May 1973) is a Welsh professional football manager who is the manager of League One club Charlton Athletic. He is also a former player who played as a left-back and a midfielder.

Jones began his career with Football Conference club Merthyr Tydfil before joining Luton Town in the summer of 1995. He became homesick at Luton so took an opportunity to move to Spain with Badajoz and then Numancia and returned to England with Southend United in 1997. Jones spent three seasons at Roots Hall which included a brief loan spell with Scarborough in 1999. He moved on to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2000 and was part of the team that won three promotions in five years. He joined Yeovil Town in 2005 where he spent seven seasons in League One making over 200 appearances.

Whilst at Yeovil, Jones began taking his coaching badges, spending time as first-team coach of Yeovil Town Ladies and later player-assistant manager of the first team. He left Yeovil in 2012 and joined Charlton Athletic as their under-21 professional development coach, a role which he held for one season. He returned to Brighton as a member of the coaching staff to Óscar García, Sami Hyypiä and Chris Hughton. Jones left Brighton in January 2016 to take over as manager of League Two club Luton Town. He guided Luton to the League Two play-offs in 2016–17 losing out to Blackpool, but earned promotion to League One in 2017–18 finishing in second place.

With Luton on course for a second consecutive promotion, Jones left in January 2019 for Championship club Stoke City. His time at Stoke was ultimately unsuccessful, with him being dismissed in November 2019. Jones returned to Luton in May 2020, subsequently saving the club from relegation following the restart of the season after the UK's lockdown, and guiding them to a playoff place in the 2021–22 season. In November 2022, he left Luton for a second time and joined Premier League club Southampton, but lasted just three months in the role before he was sacked. In February 2024, Jones was appointed manager of Charlton Athletic.

There's a TV film just started ("Bless 'em All"), and it took me back nearly 60 years! Laugh

We used to sing it (in the Brummie Road) when Everton came to play. To the tune of "Bless 'em All, The Long and the Short and the Tall":-

F*** 'em all
Especially Alan Ball
We'll never be mastered
By that little B*****d
So sing up you lads

Town head way down south to High Wycombe for a rearranged fixture that marks the first of 3 consecutive away games. This and the one at the weekend (Shrewsbury) are in towns where the local railway station is in the middle of town, but the ground couldn't be any further away if it tried, unless it was in another town. They are both about 1 hours trudge, a serious amount of shoe leather before you call in any pubs on the way. Wycombe have faltered a bit in their form since their unbeaten run that was in full swing when the game was originally scheduled, however, Town being Town, we really haven't got close to laying a glove on them yet.

Pies, pees, beers and getting there - assuming you aren't snowed in.
https://footballgroundguide.com/leagues/...erers.html

The Bill Turnbull Gantry
The gantry at the back of the Frank Adams Stand was renamed in September 2022 in honour of the late broadcaster Bill Turnbull, who had supported Wycombe and previously used to commentate on fixtures from the position.

Speaking of Wasps and Snake(s) (Oil Salesmen).

In 2002, rugby union team London Wasps (later just known as Wasps), became tenants to Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park after losing their previous groundsharing agreement with Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road. By 2008 Wasps owner Steve Hayes had gone from minority owner of Wycombe to 100% owner. From 2007 to 2011 he proposed increasingly outlandish plans to either increase the capacity of Adams Park or build new 20,000 capacity stadiums even further away from Wycombe than Adams Park.

Wycombe supporters, starting to smell a very foul smelling rat, were having none of it. By 2014 Hayes had moved Wasps lock stock and smoking gun barrel to The Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Whilst Wycombe's fans were happy, there was more than a little disconchantlement down Jimmy Hill Way at how he'd bought the ground, seemingly behind the back of Coventry City who found themselves tennants (after a brief spell at St. Andrews) in a ground that was built for them. Fast forward a slackhandful of years and the Snake Oil Salesman's plans disappeared in a puff of smoke as he couldn't afford to pay back the money he got from investors to buy the stadium etc. The rest, as they say - is his story.

Well, we bring a new guy in, he plays for 9 minutes and gets himself sent off. 3 match ban unless some miracle happens at the FA and we get it rescinded. It also took only a minute (again) for another injury as Lonwijk pulled up with a hammy chasing a through ball. Two games running we've had players injuring themselves in the first minute.

Hoggy and Evans were the unexpected (maybe, the coded messages are starting to become more decipherable) bums on the bench. Evans came on, Hoggy was still warming the bench at full time.

Musical Interlude

Hippy Rabbit rock star and former manager Gareth Ainsworth is now rocking 'em in the aisles just off the ring road in Shrewsbury, where we get to sing-along-on-Saturday. Soooo .... if you ever went to Ibiza, especially after The Sun did that exposé about the (ahem) goings on in Club 18-30 ......

Nicholas Bracegirdle, better known as Chicane is a musician, composer, songwriter and producer who was born in Chalfont St Giles. Some of his most famous hits include the Ibiza trance anthem Offshore, Saltwater and Don't Give Up, featuring Bryan Adams.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTJtfytoYy4 - the shorter version of Saltwater and no it's not the one with Bryan Adams

Jack Garratt shot to fame after his 2014 single 'Worry' was playlisted on BBC Radio One, that year he played the BBC Introducing Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. The experimental singer, songwriter and composer was born in High Wycombe and grew up in Little Chalfont.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2GTddbSe4Y - me neither. Didn't make it to Radio 2 that I recall.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock, born and raised in High Wycombe, she shot to fame after appearing in the 2011 series of the X Factor where she joined Little Mix, formerly Rhythmix.

Sir Barry Gibb is the co-founder of the Bee Gees, along with er, his brothers Maurice and Robin. They also allegedly played in a little bar in Ibiza, which was called The Piano Room if my few remaining brain cells from way back then still recall. No, I didn't see them, but the two lads that played there never tired of letting everyone know, "they played on this very stage". Although his main residence is/was in Miami he had a nine-bedroom mansion, Wilton Place, on Ledborough Lane in Beaconsfield.

Last time out

Town made hard work of another home draw when a forward with any confdence could have won them the game. How many touches does Koroma need before he realises a first time shot might actually work? How many tame headers that looked like back-passes to the keeper will Mr. Bojangles win before he realises he either needs more direction (or slight lack of) or more power on them?

Wycombe were surprisingly held 1:1 at home by Blackpool, who have been very hit and miss since Steve Bruce took over and pissed us off by winning at ours. We've a return trip to the freezing cold seaside coming up soon this month. Then again with those loanees heading back to parent clubs .... see below.

Brum went back to the top with a brace from Alfie May and another goal from Willumson at Wigan. Leading scorer Stansfield had the day off. Wycombe dropped into 2nd with their draw on goal difference after Wrexham could only win 1:0 at home to Pish Posh. Town stay 4th but are now 7 points adrift and need to win this game and the other we have in hand on Wrexham to get close to troubling the top 3. Barnsalee moved into 5th following their 4th successive win, 3:0 v Creepy Crawley and Reading generated a 3 point gap over 7th placed Smogport with a draw at Charlton. Smogport's 1:2 defeat at home to Mansfield left them in 7th, with Orient winning their 5th in a row to move 8th on goal difference over Mansfield and Bolton with a 1:0 win over the Shrews.

Burton, Cambridge and The Shrews lost 1:0, along with Creepy Crawley losing at Barnsley, so no change at the bottom. Brizzle and Pish Posh are sat on the trap door but with a big fat 5 point cushion plus a few goals in hand to spare at the moment.

The Sack Race

That new bloke at Man U kept his job after a 2-2 draw at Liverpool.
Mark Bonner went home early for his Sunday dinner from Gillingham. He's been replaced by John Coleman who will be a long way from his usual Lancashire based stomping ground.

Tables, Form & ther stats

Wycombe are currently 2 places and 7 points above Town, though we have 2 games in hand.

Wycombe kicked off with two 3:2 defeats, away to Wrexham and at home to Brum. They have only lost once since in 23 games, at Charlton on December 29th, which is why we are having a hard time laying a glove on them. The wheels haven't exactly come off but they are wobbling a bit at home with draws in 3 of their last 4 home games. Good job Town aren't having any of those issues right now. Whistle

In games against other current Top 6 sides, neither team has a stellar record to date.
After this game both clubs will have played every other club at least once.

Innies and Outies

They didn't spend a fortune but Mr. Onyedimny and a certain Mr. Humphreys on loan from Ipswich (was he free?) have been helping out with the goal stats below.

Caleb Taylor’s loan spell at Adams Park has come to an end after his parent club West Bromwich Albion activated a recall clause in his deal.
The defender, aged 21, played 20 times for the Chairboys, scoring once and contributing to 15 wins and seven clean sheets. Midfielder Aaron Morley has also gone back to Bolton. They scored 4 between them for Wycombe. Noises Off, Stage Left in Wycombe may suggest they could do a job for us, but as they've also both played for their parent clubs this season, they can't sign for another club .

Who's banging 'em in

To say Wycombe are an unexepected surprise in the promotion race this season is an understatement. 14 different players have scored for them so far this season, with Richard Kone being amongst the league leaders. He only scored 3 last season.

They found him at Athletic Newham of the Essex Senior League 12 months ago. Me neither. Dagenham way apparently, Level 9 of the FL. They got him on a free transfer, which often translates as a set of track-suits and a bag of balls at this level, or some new nets and corner flags, maybe a Ford Transit kitted out as a team bus as they are from Dagenham, or at least a full service, couple of new tyres, tank of fuel and an MOT on their current one.

They can't both win

This is the only rearranged fixture this week in League One - so far. It has snowed a bit this weekend. I know, I had to get the shovel out a couple of times to get me out of my brothers cul-de-sac on Sunday morning.

We've played 'em before

It's not that long since Wycombe joined the Football League, so another side we've not played too often. They were the first to play us at The McGalphSmiths Stadium, and they had the cheek to win. On our 2nd last visit to theirs, Jordan Rhodes scored all 6 goals. Somehow I don't see Josh Koroma or Mr. Bonjangles repeating that feat combined, let alone individually on Tuesday though Adams Park is one of our happier hunting grounds.

Next up?

I might have mentioned we visit Shrewsbury down my way on Saturday. Shoe leather's gonna take some 'ommer and there's a few pubs (if still open) on the long walk there and back to visit too. I'll try not to get lost and walk round in too many circles this time.

Pressers

Post match pressers from previous games seem to be replacing pre-match pressers in this division.

If I spot any I'll add them.

Known as 'Mr Wycombe', Matt Bloomfield returned to Wycombe as Head Coach in February 2023, following decades of service as a player.
The 39-year-old played over 550 times for the Chairboys over 19 years.
He played two matches for Ipswich Town where he started his career but went on to make over 500 appearances for Wycombe, while also serving as captain for 12 consecutive seasons. Bloomfield took on a coaching role whilst in his final few years as a player at Wycombe and retired from playing in February 2022.

  Bonner out Coleman in
Posted by: themaclad - 06-01-2025, 08:51 - Forum: Gillingham - No Replies

Gillingham have sacked manager Mark Bonner after eight months in charge of the League Two club and replaced him with former Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman.

Coleman and his assistant Jimmy Bell will take charge until the end of the season.

The Gills have lost their past three league matches, including a 3-0 home defeat by Bromley on Thursday.

Bonner was appointed as the team's third permanent manager in the space of seven months in May 2024 and took charge of 28 matches, winning nine and losing 15.

"Mark is a top guy, a top professional and has given absolutely everything he could have given to help the club succeed," Gillingham's managing director Joe Comper told the club website., external

"We liked him from the moment we met him, and we still do, which makes this decision even tougher."

On appointing Coleman, Comper added: "I am delighted that John and Jimmy have agreed to join us.

"[Coleman] knows the league well, he is familiar with our group of players and has even managed a couple of them while with his previous club."

Gillingham were top of the table at the end of September, but 10 defeats from their past 15 games have left them 14th and 10 points short of the play-off places.

Gillingham's game at Chesterfield on Sunday was postponed and their next fixture is at home to Fleetwood Town on 11 January.
