LAST MATCH

We got back to winning ways with a win at Hull. We created chances again but were let down by finishing again, while Beadle made a couple of good saves at the other end. Then a miracle happened, we were actually awarded a penalty for the first time in 558 day. Thankfully Windass stepped up and fired it into the corner. Onto the 2nd half and Hull had a chance to level but Beadle saved again. We then made the game safe, Palmer got down the left, crossed deep to the far post, Musaba steered it back and Smith finished well.

THE MATCH

Next up and a short trip south to Derby. Derby have mad an Ok start to the season, currently in 15th place. and will probably have enough to stay away from a relegation fight. They are managed by Paul Warne, who has been in charge since September 2022 and got them promoted on the last day of last season. There leading scorer is Yates, who has 4 goals and 2 assists so far this season.

Preston vs WBA - Match Thread
Posted by: Ska'dForLife-WBA - 29-11-2024, 12:38 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (7)

Two more matches, two more points. Last weekend's home encounter at least saw the goal drought end, and though the trip to Wearside was less entertaining by far, the result was still a slight positive. But it does feel frustratingly like we're back to treading water as we conclude autumn by travelling up to Lancashire for Saturday's fixture against Preston.

The Lillywhites sit in 19th, just two points above the relegation zone, and on their longest winless run (currently seven matches) since October 2018. They've also lost their last three against us, and Albion's recent record at Deepdale is much better than it once was, but our ability to continue that success is inevitably prey to the ongoing conundrum we've had these last couple of months: our midfield's top priority is protecting the makeshift defence, and so Maja up front has to make do with any half-chance he gets. Still, with goalkeeper Freddie Woodman suspended after a red card last week for handling a backpass outside the box, Preston will be liable to put veteran journeyman David Cornell between the sticks on Saturday, and that change-up might just give Albion a weak spot to exploit.

With six goalless draws under the belt now, we're already three-quarters of the way to equalling the eight we racked up under Brian Talbot way back in 1988-89, and it would be a brave man who bet against it happening yet again this week. But the wins have to come from somewhere, and this is a reasonable if not golden opportunity for the Baggies.

MANAGER STUFF

Paul Heckingbottom praised the attitude of Dai Cornell and challenged the goalkeeper to go and fight for his spot, as he looks set to deputise for the suspended Freddie Woodman.

North End’s No.1 was shown a late red card in the midweek draw against Stoke City, leaving an empty spot between the sticks for the Welsh shot-stopper to fill.

His cameo appearance from the bench on Tuesday night was his first of the season, but the manager said his attitude – whether he’s playing or not – can never be questioned.

Hecky said: “In my time here, the way he's approached every day has been exactly the same. He’s known his role and with that comes that understanding that you have to train hard and be ready every day because you've got to keep yourself sharp when you've not got the games to do that for you. Dai does that. He trains really well every day.

“It's the same as every other place on the pitch. I know Freddie's had the shirt for a long, long time, and then we've stayed with him and he's had the shirt for us, so nothing's really changed for Dai.

“The good thing from my point of view is he’s been used to that. He’s used to being ready. What we want is him going out there performing, like he wants to stay in the shirt. That's it. That’s the competition you want in every position.”

Competition at times this season has not been as strong as it could have been, due to injuries and suspensions.

PNE will, though, welcome back Ali McCann after he served a one-match ban, while Liam Lindsay and Mads Frøkjær both have a chance of returning from injury at Deepdale.

Up top, there have been welcome returns for Milutin Osmajić and Will Keane, who had been missing through suspension and injury respectively.

Hecky said: “There’s no risk with Milly because Milly was training a lot. He just missed a lot of games because he didn't go away with the national team either.

“It’s game time for Milly that he needs. Keano’s obviously a little bit different because he had an injury, so we're bringing him back.

“He looks fitter every day. He's looked better in training. He got a few minutes Saturday and a few more midweek. He’s in a position in my mind now where he can start.”

West Brom come to Lancashire sat just outside of the Play-Off spots and on the back of a rather unusual run of results, having drawn eight of their previous nine matches.

“We know it's going to be tough,” added Hecky. “Carlos (Corberán) has done it at Huddersfield and West Brom, where he’s set up in a similar way.

“They can be good in possession or they can be really strong without the ball and good on the counter, so we know it's going to be tough. We know it's going to be a tight game.

“We have to approach it the way we approach all games and set out to try and win it and try and cause them as many problems as we can to get three points.”

https://www.wba.co.uk/

The Fitness Test

Liam Lindsay and Mads Frøkjær both have a chance of being available for Saturday, with their fitness set to be assessed ahead of the weekend.

Robbie Brady is due to return to training next week, therefore will miss the weekend, while Paul Heckingbottom confirmed he feels Will Keane is now fit enough to be in a position to start.

Ched Evans and Patrick Bauer are the only other players expected to miss out.

The Baggies

West Brom head into the weekend’s round of fixtures sat seventh in the table and in the middle of a nine-match unbeaten run.

It’s been a pretty unique sequence of results for the Baggies in recent weeks, having drawn eight of those nine games, with five of those being goalless affairs.

Having conceded just 11 goals, they’re the division’s third-tightest defence, and that could prove important as they look to reach the Play-Offs for a second consecutive season.

The Officials

Referee: Thomas Bramall
Assistant Referees: Richard West and Natalie Aspinall
Fourth Officials: Matthew Corlett

Thomas Bramall, who last refereed PNE in March 2024 in a goalless draw at home to Hull City, will take charge of Saturday’s fixture.

Bramall has officiated three North End wins in the past, including the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park when Liam Lindsay scored a last-minute winner.

MACS MUSINGS

A team we don't have a recent good record against having been battered twice last season, we are the draw kings of the division apparently we have hit 400 hundred stalemates of 0-0 most of them this season
Take a point at least we possibly have a keeper who has a bit off confidence playing, he may be busy

There seem to be a couple of people who seem to want CC to take the Leicester job.

Is this the majority?

My opinion. I can see why people may think to have a change, with the draws we have had. But we have a second team defence playing with all the injuries and CC has still managed to keep clean sheets.

He may be concentrating on our defence to the detriment of our attack. Plus our number one striker has been on the injured list most of CC’s reign.

But I believe he is the best manager we have had for many many years.

He knows how to set up a team, he makes subs when needed, and in my opinion has improved us every season he has been with us. Without any funds to spend.

Personally, I want to keep him for years to come, enjoy the journey. Let’s not be like West Ham with moyes or Birmingham with Eustace, believing we have a right to cups and promotion. It will come with the right man and patience. I believe CC is the right man with our new owners.

I say be careful what you wish for.

  Prediction League Week 12 Results
Posted by: St Charles Owl - 26-11-2024, 20:10 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - No Replies

Group A

Zinman 24
Themaclad 19
Minizin 16
Twerton 14
A.A.A. 10
Amelia 8

Well this week saw quite a bit of breaking records for the current season!! Most points scored on a Gamball game (39) with all bar one player getting the maximum, new weekly high score by a single player (24), new high of 16 correct scores in total, with 2 players getting a new record high of 4 each and it will be of no surprise that given all this the total score is a new season high of 91 points!!!!

For the 3rd time in 5 weeks Zinman recorded a personal high score for himself and this week he set a new bar for the season with 24 points. A spot on Gamball was backed up with 3 other CSs, if only he didn't have the negative on the Bonus he would have scored 30 points!!! Themaclad is 2nd with 19 points, another CS on the Gamball for him (that's three this season for him) and like Zinman 3 other CSs to boot. Minizin is 3rd with 16 points, like the top 2 he had a CS on the Gamball but "only" backed that up with 2 other CSs!!

Twerton is 4th with 14 points, CS on the Gamball, 2 other CSs but not much else saw his score stunted. AAA is 5th with 10 points, while the CS on the Gamball was a good start, he added little else to his scoring. Amelia is last with 8 points, she was the lone player not to score a maximum on the Gamball but ironically was the only player to score positive points on the Bonus, and thankfully for her it was of course a maximum!!!

138 Themaclad
103 Twerton
101 Minzin
101 Zinman
87 Amelia
78 A.A.A.

Only one positional change in the table with Zinman's excellent week moving him back above Amelia, but this is significant as it moves him level with Minizin and the pair of them are now only 2 points behind Twerton!! Themaclad of course sees his consistency stretch his lead again and it now stands at 35 points!! Amelia and AAA are not out of it yet but they need to find some consistent form.

Cheers
SCO

Group B

SCO 13
Derby 7
BBB 7
Stairs 7
Snooty 5
Lady Jane 4
BaggieOne 3

A below average week for Group B, not helped by a complete wipe out on the Gamball. There were also just 2 positive bonus balls but at least scoreballs were more common, with only Lady Jane missing out. in addition to the gamball match, 2 other games, at Coventry and Albion, produced negative scores. This week saw the highest ratio of correct scores to correct results at 50%.

One stand out performance this week from SCO, the only player to achieve double figures from his 4 correct predictions. These included his bonus and 2 correct scores to give him a 6 point advantage over the pack. Three players were together on 7 points, Derby and BBB both getting 2 correct scores from their 3 correct predictions, none of them their bonuses, while Stairs scored on just 2 games, one a maximum, and was the other player to get his bonus right.

Snooty managed to get 100% of his correct predictions spot on, unfortunately there were only 2 of them while Lady Jane had an unusually por week scoring just 4 points and missing out on all the balls. BaggieOne was the only player not to get a correct score and sits at the foot of this week's table.

145 Lady Jane
111 Derby
95 SCO
88 BBB
85 Stairs
81 Snooty
76 BaggieOne

No changes whatsoever in the overall table this week. Lady Jane and Derby are still setting the pace though, with his 2nd consecutive weekly top spot, SCO is beginning to close the gap. Still very close for the rest of the table though BaggieOne is in danger of drifting away at the foot of the table.

Tuesday 26/11/24

Town follow Saturday's visitors back down the M1, but hit the brakes north of Old Father Thames for a taste of The Orient, or maybe it's a Taste of Paradise?

Here's hoping we come back with something other than a chocolate covered snack bar and we don't look like a proper bunch of coconuts again.
By the way - the advert that follows the Bounty Bar features Cadbury's Smash. We all know where they refer to in that one.

Originally scheduled on October 12th, they managed to reschedule it for an afternoon whilst I'm in Canada. (It's afternoon where I am). There's every chance I still won't get to watch it on the box/laptop let alone in the ground. Ho Hum.

On the tellybox

Having been moved to Tuesday it's on Sky Sports+ in the UK and HTTV for a fee, which is what used to be iFollow.
Otherwise it's not officially being streamed in furrin lands.

Latest news

Heavy rain falls in Wales, Wales homes get flooded, again. Oh why do they build homes in Wales?
The snow has melted in the UK, still none to be seen in the GTA, but other parts of Canada are getting their fair share of "flurries".

Half-season cards on sale if you fancy one.

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

After scoring one header, hitting the bar with another, Pearson went off injured in the first half on Saturday with a foot injury as did Healey with a calf injury. Neither will be playing.

Nobody else back off the long term sick list.

and as it's quarter past another bottle of cold fizzy beer time over here and I can't really be bothered to look, have some Hackney Diamonds.

Hackney's just down the road from Leyton, so don't get angry with me. Big Grin

These embedded video's don't work very well anymore do they?

Last time out

Town won again to move back into the Top 6. The foul that hobbled Pearson resulted in a red card for the Charlton player.* Pearson however will likely miss more games than Docherty. Is that fair?
* Corrected by Snoots in his post below.

Orient went to Stevenage and drew 0-0, however other results around them meant they dropped below the trap-door.

In the nose-bleeds, Wycombe won again at Lincoln to stay top. Wrexham moved into 2nd wth a 3-0 win at home to Exeter, whilst Stockport showed they've sorted out their wobbly wheels with a 0-3 win at bottom placed Burton to move into 3rd. That was at the expense of Brum, who felt the full force of the New Manager Bounce effect at Shrewsbury in an unexpected 3-2 defeat. Town jumped to 5th and Barnsley slipped to 6th after losing at home to Wigan.

Down amongst the dead-men, Burton as above stay bottom, Shrewsbury's win still left them in 23rd below Cambridge who had drawn 0-0 at Northampton. Orient fell through the trap door as Crawley beat Rotherham 1-0.

The Sack Race

Steve Cooper turned his 3 year contract at Leicester to a 3-4 month stay on Monday. Unlucky #13 this season according to the website I use. The fans didn't like his more negative style of play and the board didn't like his lack of wins. W4, D4, L7. Since my last missive, some fool has steppd into the revolving door of criticism at Old Trafford again and Gareth Ainsworth has rocked up in Shrewsbury, to geat effect. Just ask Brum.

Tables, Form & all those stats.

We're still up in the nose-bleeds on form, but it's mostly due to our home form.

[Image: Bdu0hB2.png] [Image: tcYkLRx.png]

They win a few, they draw a few, they lose a lot. After last season saw them embrace mid-table medocrity with an 11th place finish, four defeats in the first 4 games saw them rooted to the foot of the table at the start of this one. They then won two away, at Reading and with 4 of their goals coming in a battering of Stockport. In the same run they drew two at home to Posh and Wrexham, showing they really aren't a push over. However they lost the next 3 around the time this fixture should originally have been played. They then won two and lost two of the remaining fixtures before Saturday's drawn game.

[Image: VTEsWvL.png] [Image: NAt7aSj.png]

Innies and Outies

Not a helluva lot of money swilling round this part of the Old East End of that there Larndan Tarn.

Who's banging 'em in

Centre forward Charlie Kelman is their leading scorer, but several others are chipping in, but not in big numbers. They've so far only scored 14 times in the League and 7 of those came in two games.

They can't all win

Three catch-up fixtures round out the matches posponed from October 12th. Wycombe will be looking to extend their lead whilst Mansfield will be looking to get back into the Top 6 after only collecting 1 point in ther last 3 games. Brum will also be looking to return to form. They've been playing more like Man City just recently. Whistle

We've played 'em before

Town are well ahead in the Head2Head fixtures. We've won 4, drawn 1 and lost 1 of our last 6 visits to Brisbane Road.

Next up?

It's FA Cup R2 weekend so we fans have a day off. Duff Duff has the squad in for training though as a reward for losing in the First Round.
We are next at home to Wigan on Tuesday 3rd December.

LAST MATCH

Once again this season, our finishing lets us down as we drew with Cardiff. We nearly got off to the perfect start, Ugbo scoring only to be denied by the offside flag, then Windass Lobed just over. Cardiff then punished us as O'Dowda got down the left and whose shot was saved by Beadle but the rebound was put in by Tanner. We responded very quickly, Windass down the right and crossed for Bernard to score from close range. Onto the 2nd half and we had some chances particularly near the end of the game but poor finishing let us down again.

Next up and the short journey to Hull. Hull are struggling this season and currently lie in 22nd place and are 8 games without a win (good time to be playing us then Doh ). They will probably end up being in the relegation dogfight and only time will tell if they are good enough to stay up. They are currently managed by Tim Walter, a German, who has been in charge since the summer. There leading scorer is Kasey Palmer with 3

MANAGER

Narcís Pèlach Nadal (born 5 September 1988), sometimes known as Chicho, is a Spanish football coach and former player who is the head coach of EFL Championship club Stoke City.

Immediately after joining Figueres, Pèlach started working as a coach of their Juvenil B team, being named in charge of the Juvenil A side on 28 July 2015.[9] On 17 May 2016, after retiring, he was presented as manager of the first team.[8]

On 4 January 2018, Pèlach was presented as Peralada-Girona B manager, with the farm team of Girona, playing in Segunda División B.[10] On 6 June 2018, after leading the side to a ninth place finish, he renewed his contract until 2020.[11]

In June 2019, after Peralada's relegation and their affiliation with Girona ended, Pèlach was named Juan Carlos Unzué's assistant at Girona's first team.[12] In October, after Unzué was sacked and José Luis Martí was named the new manager, he and fellow assistant Juan Carlos Moreno were fired from the club.[13]

On 24 July 2020, Pèlach moved abroad for the first time in his career and joined Carlos Corberán's staff at English club Huddersfield Town.[14] He was appointed interim head coach in September 2022,[15] winning his only game in charge, before Mark Fotheringham took over.[16] Pèlach was again named interim manager of Huddersfield in February 2023, replacing Fotheringham.[17][18] His spell lasted six days, as the club appointed Neil Warnock.[19]

In May 2023, Pèlach joined Norwich City as a first-team coach.[20]

In September 2024, Pèlach was linked in the media to the vacant Stoke City manager job,[21][22] and was announced as Stoke's new head coach on 18 September 2024, signing a three-year contract.[23]

CULTURAL STUFF

Stoke Minster is the Minster church of St Peter ad Vincula and main church in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England. It is now the main church of the wider city of Stoke-on-Trent.

Name and dedication
The dedication to St Peter ad Vincula means "Saint Peter in Chains". It is derived from the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The church was formally renamed Stoke Minster in 2005 in recognition of its role in the civic life of Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. The title "minster" is an honorific, sharing a common etymology with "monastery".[1]

History
The first church on the site was built of timber in 670. It was replaced with a stone building in 805 which was extended over the centuries. The remains of this Anglo-Saxon and former collegiate church survive in the churchyard. The re-erected arches date from the 13th century when the chancel was rebuilt. Saxon evidence survives in the baptismal font rescued from use as a garden ornament and restored in 1932 for baptismal use in the church.[2]

The church is the burial place of several generations of Josiah Spode's family, as well as Josiah Wedgwood, who is also commemorated inside the church by a marble memorial tablet commissioned by his sons.[3]

The title of "Stoke Minster" was conferred on the church by The Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, Bishop of Lichfield, at a ceremony on 17 May 2005.[citation needed]
