  Celtic v Hibs - Saturday 7 December
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 05-12-2024, 23:50 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (2)

I won't bother you with all the statistics buzzing around ahead of Saturday's game, suffice to say that the omens are not good. The game should be treated as a free hit and a gritty determined performance might be the best we can hope for from Hibs.

Celtic are already runaway leaders in the Premiership and don't show any signs of lessening their grip on that lead. If we can come away with the right performance and attitude and continue it against Ross County the following weekend, we can continue with our new-found optimism.

Kick-off 15:00 UK Time
Saturday 07/12/24

Town make the short(ish) journey down the M1 to the land of Robin Hood, Maid Marion, Alan a'Dale, Friar Tuck and The Sheriff of Nottingham for Saturday's League One fixture. Sherwood Forest is almost always associated with Nottingham, but it's far closer to Mansfield. They aren't called The Stags for nothing. Town are now unbeaten in two slack handfulls of games whilst Mansfield have dropped out of the play-off spots with 4 defeats in a row. Managed by Nigel Clough (is there anyone in and around the East Midlands he hasn't managed, except Leicester and his dad's old haunt at Forest)? He's been there 4 years so far and he'll likely be there for a while longer yet.

Hey, who am I to deny him? No I don't know him either but he's famous enough in his own online lunchbox to request a credit.

Pies, Pees 'n' Pubs

I'll let the good folk at The Football Ground Guide describe it all for you

Their (current) main stand is named after one of their more famous managers, a certain Mr. Ian Greaves who led Town to our only other recent(ish) foray into Division One (aka the Prima Donna League) just as I was leaving junior school. It's a pity he doesn't have at least two stands named after him in the country. Don't suppose anyone involved at HD1 will take any notice.

The Bishop Street Stand and terraces opposite is deemed safe enough for the TV gantry but not safe enough to house supporters. Having rebuilt three sides of the stadium with modern cantilever stands, you have to wonder whey their glamour-puss owners have let the 4th side down. He's a rich sod and she's a glamour model. I guess it might be a bit of Genesis moment if they ever did redevelop that side so they could Turn It On Again. It is recognised as the oldest Professional Football ground, having first been used in 1861, a year before Bramhall Lane, though it was a wee while before it went from being a football field to an actual stadium. The dugouts are on that side of the ground. Hard hats and hi-viz might not be a bad idea.

From the Football Ground Guide - in case you didn't read it.
Mansfield Town owner Carolyn Radford has confirmed the club aims to develop the Bishop Street Stand but they face difficulty due to infrastructural issues.

The Bishop Street Stand was condemned in 2006 due to safety issues but, Carolyn is eager to rebuild the stand to continue to grow the club. Carolyn Radford is in constant contact with Mansfield Council in a bid to come to an agreement for the stand to be redeveloped in hopes of increasing Mansfield Town’s growing support.

Mansfield have finally received a boost in their quest to renovate the stand, having had plans approved by the council in the summer of 2024. A three-step process will now be put in place, with the club stating that a brand-new toilet facility, state-of-the-art hospitality boxes and a capacity expansion are all part of the plan.

So putting a shit-hole in to replace the shit-hole that's not been used for yonks is the first priority? So that's all right then. Laugh

The Sheriff of Nottingham and Maid Marion, sorry, the Radfords, owners of and apparently the most glamourous pair-sonalities in Mansfield.
As Mrs. Merton might have once said, you also have to wonder whatever attracted her to the multi-millionaire owner of One Call Insurance?
The chance to run a glamorous National League football club and get them back into the EFL obviously ..... Whistle

Latest news

Mansfield, like most of Cloughies teams, are a good footballing side and Town have come unstuck on more than one occasion in games against him. Clough considers they have been unlucky in recent games, with the late in the game defeat to Wycombe being described as a fluke. That's how it works when you're playing a side flying high at the top though.

Scroll to 1:45, I've no argument that this was one of the best miss-hits of the season so far.

That was one of three 1:0 defeats in 4. Narrow margins.

Town are still more than a win behind the top 3 now, despite our impressive run, so need to keep picking up wins to ensure the gap doesn't grow.

From the abscence of questions or statements in the presser, I believe we are as were were before Wigan.

Last time out

Town beat Wigan (eventually) 1-0 with Ollie Turton's first goal for the club, in a televised game that would have done wonders for the insomniacs around the world, though some thought it entertaining if not quite riveting. When you replace your centre forward and The Ginger Cafu then scores the winning goal, are you claiming that as an inspired substitution or are you admitting your forwards are crap given that both Kasumu and Turton were already on the pitch and Ladapo was no more effective than Ward?

Mansfield lost 3:1 at Bolton, the same Bolton that Town go to next Tuesday in the EFL Cup The same Bolton that we beat 0:4 before losing the rest of the games in September. Despite Mansfield taking the lead late in the first half, Bolton got their tails up after Mansfield's skipper Hiram Boateng got himself sent off with goals in the 75th, 80th and 85th minutes.

In the midweek games at the top, Wycombe came back from 2:0 down at Exeter to draw and finally end their winning run. Wrexham beat Barnsley to stay 2nd with Barnsley dropping to 8th. Brum beat Stockport 2:0 thanks to 2 Alfie May goals (if only we could have signed a striker like Alfie May, effing agents, who'd have one?) to put them 4 points above 4th placed Town and still having a game in hand. Stockport remained in 5th with that defeat whilst Reading moved into 6th with a 3:0 win over Cambridge. Bolton's win moved them into 7th within a sniff of the top 6.

Down at the bottom, Burton finally moved themselves off the basement floor with a surprise 0:1 win at Pish Posh. Shrewsbury's new manager bounce didn't last long as they followed up the win over Brum with a defeat at home to Blackpool to take Burton's place as bottom of the cellar dwellars. Cambridge's defeat kept them 22nd while Northampton dropped below the trap door with a defeat at Stevenage. Yes, that Northampton that beat Town 1:3 not too long ago. Orient moved back onto the trap door with a 3:0 win at home to Brizzle.

Musical Interlude

Bernard William Jewry, known professionally as Shane Fenton and later as Alvin Stardust, was an English rock singer and stage actor. He had some minor hits in the 60's performing as Shane Fenton and the Fentones but it was in the glam-rock era of the 70's that he relaunched hiself as Alvin Stardust and Coo-Ca-Choo'd his way into the charts. By the 1980's he was feeling like (a very grainy) Buddy Holly.

Also from Mansfield were a band called Ohio Express, except it was Mansfield Ohio, hence the name. Their brand of music was branded bubble gum pop. Maybe because you didn't want it sticking around your face when the bubble you blew burst. Later band members eventually formed 10cc.

The Sack Race

More fun and games in the pre-Christmas lottery. After Steve Cooper got his big "stay at home Christmas bonus pay-off" Hull City joined in and parted ways with Tim Walter after about 6 months in charge of The Chumpionship club. Three draws to start followed by defeats to The Blunts and L666s they then won the next 3. They've drawn 3 and lost the remaining 7 from 10 to leave them 3rd bottom. van Missed'emall (Leicester) and Lampard (Coventry) are still the most recent appointments so 'oo are 'ull looking at?

Jon Brady has resigned as manager of Northampton Town on Friday 6th December. Brady guided Northampton to promotion from League Two in the 2022/23 season, but has found the going tough this season. Northampton, who were recently humbled by lower league neighbours Kettering Town in the FA Cup, have won just four times this season. They last tasted a victory back on 26 October after a 3-0 win over Crawley Town. Ian Sampson will take temporary charge alongside Marc Richards on a temporary basis.

Tables, Form & other stats

Mansfield are 6 places and 8 points behind Town. 4 defeats on the bounce have dropped them into mid-table mediocrity.

We couldn't be much further apart in terms of recent form. Don't let that fool you, this is Town we're talking about, we've been here before.

Our home form is mostly driving our current position but we are improving on the road.

[Image: 39NIAti.png] [Image: 2EKvLTd.png]

After a win and two draws from 4 games to start with, they turned this around and 5 wins on the bounce moved them into the top 6. They mostly hung around the promotion places until the recent run of poor form dropped them into mid-table mediocrity. They have only won once and drawn once in their last 7 games. Town have finally banished the pink results from their last 8 games.

[Image: HCWJMm2.png] [Image: S0WinuS.png]

Innies and Outies

Clough managed to open the cheque book of their Chairman, John Radford and his missus and co-owner Carolyn a little bit, however his best signing (not shown here) was getting Lee Gregory to move down the road from Wendies on a free. In total 7 came in an 7 went out.

Who's banging 'em in

Well it's that man Lee Gregory and the guy they paid a small (by recent history) amount for, Will Evans. Formerly of Halifax Town and Mansfield Town on many previous occasions before he started wandering around the country, Cloughie was able to persuade Lee to come "home". Though he's their leading scorer, he's been injured for a few weeks and is unlikely to start. Their extended bad run of form and his abscence aren't just a coincidence. Their skipper will also be missing but don't let that fool you.

Lee Gregory - transfers and loans.

They can't all win

Wycombe are home to 6th placed Reading, Wrexham go to 23rd placed Burton, Brum to 8th Barnsley, we know where Town are, Stockport are home to mid-table Exeter. Bolton will be looking to get a toe into the top 6 from a trip to Brizzle and Barnsley will be looking for a first win in 5 to halt their slide.

Down amongst the dead-men, Cambridge and the Shrews play a 6 pointer, Burton will try and get something off Wrexham and Northampton will look to add to Pish Posh's recent run of defeats. Orient will try to stay the right side of the trap door at Wigan, who will be looking to move back up into mid-table mediocrity.

We've played 'em before

We don't meet very often and we're just ahead. The last time we did was in Cardiff in 2004 (how time flies) at the Division Three (now League 2) Play-off Final where Town won on penalties after Andy Booth curled a sitter over the bar and Mansfield had a late "winner" chalked off as the lino decided the ball crossed into the area had crossed the deadball line. Wonder what VAR would have made of that these days or would they just have ignored it?

One of the deciding penalties (apart from Town winning them 4-1) was taken by a far too cocky Liam Lawrence. That he chose to chip the ball stright down the middle and managed to bounce it twice on the crossbar got him one of the biggest cheers of the day from those of us assembled at the other end of The Millenium/Principality Stadium. Wemberlee was being demolished and rebuilt at the time.

Still he didn't do too badly, He scored 40 of his 93 career goals for Mansfield before going on to far better things than most Town players managed to do at the time.

A youthful Mark Clattenburg ref'd that game. Wonder what happened to him?

Next up?

Bolton away in the EFL Cup, I doubt we'll win 0:4 again, followed by our last home fixture before the Christmas madness takes over at home to The Imps.

  Brady goes
Posted by: themaclad - 05-12-2024, 19:31 - Forum: Northampton Town - No Replies

Jon Brady has resigned as manager of League One Northampton Town.

The 49-year-old leaves after three and a half years in charge with the club 21st in the table.

The announcement comes just 48 hours after Brady had talked about his pride at the work that had been done during his time at Sixfields Stadium before his 200th game in charge against Stevenage.

The Cobblers lost that game 2-0 - their sixth league match without a win.

Brady's assistant Ian Sampson has been put in interim charge and will lead the team in Monday's home game against Peterborough.

The club said they received Brady's resignation on Wednesday and accepted it "given the circumstances".

"We really appreciate what Jon has done for the club, initially within the academy and over the last four years or so as first-team manager," chairman Kelvin Thomas said., external

"I personally appreciated Jon's kind words earlier this week when he acknowledged how well-supported he had been by the club.

"However we also all fully understand the real pressures that come with being a manager and while we all would have preferred things to be different, we understand Jon's decision.

"We will now work with Jon and the LMA [League Managers' Association] on his exit agreement."

Although unable to save Northampton from relegation to League Two when he took interim charge in February 2021, Brady led the Cobblers back to the third tier two seasons later.

He consolidated their place in League One last term, finishing 14th and a comfortable 16 points clear of the relegation places.

But this season has been tough with only four wins so far, leaving the club in the bottom four.

Posted by: themaclad - 05-12-2024, 19:29 - Forum: Braintree Town - No Replies

National League strugglers Braintree Town have appointed Steve Pitt as their new manager.

Pitt has replaced Angelo Harrop, who was recently sacked. He worked at the club as Harrop's assistant from the summer of 2022 until last December.

Karl Duguid will be Pitt's assistant and Phil Coleman has been installed as first-team coach.

Justin Moseley, who was placed in interim charge following Harrop's dismissal, was offered the chance to stay on as part of Pitt's coaching team but has opted to leave the club.

"I'm honoured and privileged to take on the role of first-team manager and will now look to build on the foundations that Angelo has already laid," said Pitt.

Braintree are 19th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Harrop was appointed in May 2022 and guided the Iron to promotion last season with a 4-3 win over Worthing in the National League South play-off final.

But he lost his job after a run of just five wins from 20 games this term.

LAST MATCH

We made it back to back away wins as we beat Derby in dramatic fashion. Derby started bright and were soon 1-0 up when as Adams fired in from close range after a pull back. We were struggling to do anything of note and thankfully went in only 1 down. DR changed the formation and we were a bit more progressive. We then levelled things up with a Bazza special from 25 yards. It looked like the game would end level until Pato created a bit of havoc and crossed for Lowe to tap home the winner.

THE MATCH

Back to Hillsborough and Preston make the journey over the Pennines. Preston have found wins hard to come by, just 3 in there 18 games played, hence why they are currently in 18th place in the division and haven't won a game in there last 8. They could be in for a relegation dogfight if they can't find a way top win more games. They are managed by Paul Heckingbottom, who took over after Ryan Lowe was sacked after the 1st game this season. Heck has also managed the Blunts, L**ds and the Dingles. There leading scorer is Greenwood with 4 goals and 2 assists.

The Fitness Test

Liam Lindsay and Mads Frøkjær are both back in full training and are expected to be available to feature on Saturday.

Robbie Brady has also returned to training, however this match will come too soon for the Republic of Ireland international.

Brad Potts is now back to full health after struggling with illness prior to last weekend's draw with West Brom, which limited him to a substitute cameo.

The Owls

Sheffield Wednesday head into the weekend after picking up back-to-back victories away from home, against Hull City and Derby County respectively.

Those results have seen the Owls rise to 12th in the table and they'll be looking to keep pushing further to a much more comfortable position than they found themselves in last season, when Danny Röhl’s side managed to stay up against the odds.

Matches between Wednesday and North End have been tight affairs in recent times, with 1-0 scorelines coming in each of the last four meetings.

The Officials

Referee: Bobby Madley
Assistant Referees: Blake Antrobus and Darren Williams
Fourth Official: Adam Herczeg

Bobby Madley will referee his third PNE match of the season on Saturday, having taken charge of the opening day defeat to Sheffield United and the dramatic penalty shootout victory over Fulham.

Madley has refereed 13 matches in total this season and in that time has shown 41 yellow cards and one red.

CULTURAL STUFF

[Image: Sheffield_Cathedral_%28geograph_6906981%29.jpg]

The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul, Sheffield, also known as Sheffield Cathedral, is the cathedral church for the Church of England diocese of Sheffield, England. Originally a parish church, it was elevated to cathedral status when the diocese was created in 1914. Sheffield Cathedral is one of five Grade I listed buildings in the city,[1] along with the Town Hall, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, and the parish churches at Ecclesfield and Bradfield.

The cathedral is located on Church Street in the city centre, close to the head of Fargate. Construction of the earliest section of the cathedral dates back to c. 1200, with the newest construction completed in 1966; the building is an unusual mixture of medieval and modern architecture. Cathedral tram stop, located outside the front churchyard, opened in 1994 and is today served by all four lines of the Sheffield Supertram network. Most recently, the cathedral underwent an interior and exterior refurbishment in 2013–2014.

Sheffield Cathedral was damaged in a fire on 14 May 2020, an investigation into which is ongoing; a 40-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with arson. The fire destroyed a portion of the cathedral used by a homelessness charity.[2] A previous fire caused damage to the cathedral belltower in 1979.

  Prediction League Week 13 Results
Posted by: Zinman - 05-12-2024, 00:12 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - No Replies

Group A

Amelia 14
Minizin 12
A.A.A. 12
Twerton 10
Zinman 9
Themaclad 4

Decent scoring week and one where the underdogs outperformed the usual suspects!! Amelia tops the weekly table with 14 points, she was one of 3 players to get a CR on the Gamball and backed that up with a CR on Bonus and picked up her scoreball as well. Minizin and AAA tied for 2nd with 12 points. Both of them got a CR on the Gamball but this gained Minizin two extra points as AAA did not play the Gamball this week!! Both of them also scored maximums on the Bonus but were unable to add much more which kept their scores down.

Twerton was the only other player in double figures with 10 points, he missed on all his balls but did manage 2 CSs and 3 CRs to post a decent score. Zinman had a similar week with 2 CSs but missed on the Bonus and Gamball. Themaclad had his worst week of the season so far finishing with jut 4 points!! He missed on all his balls and failed to get any CSs so there is hope for everyone else that even he can have bad weeks!!

142 Themaclad
113 Twerton
113 Minzin
110 Zinman
101 Amelia
90 A.A.A.

No actual positional changes in the table with the scoring being quite close. Zinman drops to 4th and Minizin goes joint second but its still very tight behind Themaclad. His lead is now down to 29 points, still very healthy but as this week shows it is reachable if others can find consistency.

Group B

I'll start with a potentially controversial executive decision. I failed to notice that Lady Jane had played 2 scoreballs rather than a bonus. If I took her first scoreball as the scoreball and the second as her bonus, she would have scored -2 points from them. If it had been the other way round, she would have scored +1 point - so I've decided to ignore both balls. If anyone objects to this treatment, please send your complaints to SCO!

Stairs 17
Snooty 14
Derby 13
Lady Jane 7
BBB 6
SCO 4
BaggieOne 4

A second consecutive wipout on the gamball offset an otherwise decent week with 28 correct predictions and 10 correct scores. Half of the week's fixtures saw one team fail to score - unfortunately for Group B, these were the games chosen for the scoreball so no points from that ball either.

Stairs heads the weekly table for the first time this season. He scored on 6 games and got 2 of them, including his bonus, as correct scores to collect 17 points, his best of the season. Snooty remains as the only player yet to head the table but he was only a ball away from doing so. He also scored on 6 games but turned 3 of them into correct scores, but his failure to pick up any ball points kept him 3 points from the top. Derby was the other player into double figures helped by his 1 correct score being his bonus ball.

Not much between the rest. Lady Jane failed to hit double figures for just the 4th week as she continues to take a breather after her incredible start to the season. BBB did match Stairs' 2 correct scores but only scored on 1 other game and blanked his balls. SCO and BaggieOne share bottom spot - B1 was the only player not to pick up a maximum but did at least get his bonus result right.

152 Lady Jane
124 Derby
102 Stairs

Some shuffling of the pack this week with Stairs rising 2 places to 3rddisplacing SCO and BBB. Snooty also climbs a place but given the congestion between 3rd and 6th places we can expect to see changes here most weeks. Still a healthy lead for our top 2 while BaaggieOne is drifting away from the pack.

Rainbow laces and armbands? Politics or sport?

Okay I AM gay, so if anyone is going to bring up such a topic it ought to be me.

I understand that as with many sports, football wants to stand aside from , and even above, politics. But I studied politics. The definition of politics that I came to accept was inclusive. It is remarkably easy to find a political aspect to everything that happens in human society. Hard to establish the a-political.

Once you have a complex society diverse human sexuality cannot but be an issue. Attitudes to it unavoidably shape that society. Whatever shapes the nature of a society must by definition also become political.

So my view is the "rainbow" campaign is political. You can therefore question whether embracing any particular view and publicising it should play any part in sport.

Personally I would love to see an openly gay world-class male footballer on the road to becoming an icon. Unfortunately were I now as good as I wanted to be at the game, with a temperament to match, I'd still feel very daunted about entering the dressing room and experiencing that culture every single day. For example how would I have felt about marching out to every big game, holding some random child's hand, as though the ability and desire to reproduce was all that could make me worthwhile as a man? And isn't that in itself a political act very little different from wearing rainbow laces? Politics is all around us, the very air we breathe.

BUT, if being gay and support or opposition to diverse sexuality is political, how come sport itself does not recognise that it cannot help being political? It is everywhere in our culture, it informs our lives and the way we live, it brings nations together and divides them. It presides over collisions in race, culture, religion ........ Sport is political. It makes Israel part of Europe. It makes countries which do not exist into international teams. It punishes Russia and rewards Qatar. Sport and politics ..... how do we divide them?

There is a great deal of virtue-signalling with the rainbow campaign. There is also genuine support. Players who tie their boots and think sexuality shouldn't matter, skill should.

Does all this increase awareness and tolerance or does it eventually subside, like taking the knee, to just another thing that happens pre-kick-off?

What does anyone else think? And you don't need to be sensitive to an old poof.
