Hate politics in full view - Rangers pull out of the Sydney Cup friendly!!
Posted by: 0762 - 31-03-2022, 18:53 - Forum: Rangers - No Replies

Other "progressive" footie clubs (big ones!!) occasionally do this abroad. Not this toxic footie club with certain factions of fans who use the sport of soccer as a "platform of hate", voiced their disapproval recently at a Scot prem footie match and the stupid footie club officials meekly bow to these extreme "nut jobs", although professing an "excuse" that the Aussie sponsors didn't satisfy their demands (more demands??? Haven't we heard this kinda shit before from the same toxic footie club that still appears to have such a high regard for itself after "staining" the good name of Scot footie so many times ad nauseum!!) - YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP AND THE WORDS, "FOOTBALL DINOSAURS", REALLY COME TO MIND in their little football world of hate!! Unbelievable and a gross violation of the whole reason why we watch/enjoy football and abide by the FIFA rules, one of which actually vetoes this kinda activity/behaviour anyway. The word "sport" kinda gives it away eh!!

FORM GUIDE

RAMS 4 PNE 8

FAMOUS PESRON FROM DERBY BIT

Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney KCB FRS FRSE (24 July 1843 – 3 December 1920) was an English astronomer, chemist, and photographer.

Life and career
Abney was born in Derby, England, the son of Rev. Edward Abney (1811–1892), vicar of St Alkmund's Church, Derby, and owner of the Firs Estate. William was educated at Rossall School, the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and joined the Royal Engineers in 1861, with whom he served in India for several years. Thereafter, and to further his knowledge in photography, he became a chemical assistant at the Chatham School of Military Engineering.

Abney was a pioneer of several technical aspects of photography. His father had been an early photographic experimenter and friend of Richard Keene, an early Derby photographer. Keene became a close friend of William and his brother Charles Edward Abney (1850–1914). Both Abney sons subsequently became founder members of the Derby Photographic Society in June 1884.[1] His endeavors in the chemistry of photography produced useful photographic products and also developments in astronomy. He wrote many books on photography that were considered standard texts at the time, although he was doubtful that his improvements would have a great impact on the subject.

Abney investigated the blackening of a negative to incidental light. In 1874, Abney developed a dry photographic emulsion, which replaced "wet" emulsions. He used this emulsion in an Egyptian expedition to photograph the transit of Venus across the sun. In 1880, he introduced hydroquinone. Abney also introduced new and useful types of photographic paper, including in 1882 a formula for gelatin silver chloride paper. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1876.

Abney conducted early research into the field of spectroscopy, developing a red-sensitive emulsion which was used for the infrared spectra of organic molecules. He was also a pioneer in photographing the infrared solar spectrum (1887), as well as researching sunlight in the medium of the atmosphere.

In 1893 he inherited Meashan Hall from a rich aunt.

He became assistant secretary to the Board of Education in 1899 and advisor to that body in 1903.[2] In 1900 he was Director of the Science and Art Department. He sold his father's estate, most of which went for housing in the St Luke's Parish of Derby, but retained 11 acres until 1913 when they were purchased by the Council to become the site of Rykneld Secondary Modern School and Rykneld recreation ground.[3]

Abney invented the "Abney level", a combined clinometer and spirit level, used by surveyors to measure slopes and angles. He was responsible for the "Abney mounting" of a concave grating spectrograph in which the photographic plate was fixed and the entry slit moved to accommodate different regions of the spectrum.

He died on 3 December 1920 in Folkestone, England. He is buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church in Folkestone.

Coming from Scotland - Bournemouth Game
Posted by: SpenB - 31-03-2022, 13:25 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - No Replies

Hi all,

Stupid question for the regular attendees but seeking some advice.

We should be coming down next week to catch up with family and though we would get a game in (Bournemouth).

Should be me and the kids (I say kids but 20 and 15).

Can I just turn up at the ticket office and buy the tickets on the night/afternoon?

What time does the ground open?
I though about getting there about 5:30/6pm getting a seat then getting food and drink in the stadium before the match starts.

Contentious one now - where would the best please to sit be?

Would leaving it till I get there be too late for 3 seats together?

As I said stupid questions for regular fans (Sorry).

Cheers,
Spen

  2022 Men's World Championships
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 31-03-2022, 00:11 - Forum: Winter sports - Replies (12)

The World Championship series moves to the south from 2nd to 10th April in the Orleans Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada. An ice rink in the desert seems pretty far-fetched, but Las Vegas has Venetian gondolas and Egyptian sphinxes, so I suppose anything is possible.

The 13 participating teams are Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and United States. Scotland are represented by skip Kyle Waddell, vice-skip Ross Paterson (who plays last stones) along with Duncan Menzies (2nd) and Craig Waddell (lead). This is a fairly new team with only Ross Paterson having experience at World Championship level, but he has won Bronze as alternate for Bruce Mouat's team in 2018, also in Las Vegas.

I should add that there was a bit of a "hoo-ha" regarding the selection for these Championships, but Paterson's team are the National Champions and there was no requirement to hold a play-off with the Olympic team, as was done in 2018. No doubt changes will be made to the selection process in the future, but we are where we are.

Scotland start their campaign at 3am (UK time) against Italy on Sunday followed by Korea at 5pm, also on Sunday. Now these are my interpretation of the times but I think I've added on the time difference correctly.

Looking further ahead, the teams ranked first and second after the round-robin will proceed directly to the Semi-finals while, for teams ranked third to sixth, qualification games will take place on Saturday 9 April. The qualification games will see the third-ranked team play the sixth-ranked team and the fourth-ranked face the fifth-ranked team, with the winners progressing to the Semi-finals, which will follow in the evening — the team ranked first will play the winner of 3v6 game and the team ranked second will play the winner of 4v5 game. The Bronze Medal game and then the Gold Medal final will be staged on Sunday 10th.

Window Closes But We Weren't Even In The Room
Posted by: Devongone - 30-03-2022, 16:23 - Forum: Chesterfield - Replies (4)

Our ability to sign new players came and went last week with us deciding to keep our hands in our pockets with a view to signing someone we really really want next season. It sounds a sensible policy, especially if some of our injured players become fit. It appears to be a long-term view and we have rarely seen the bigger picture in recent years, but the problem is that we are probably now not good enough to gain promotion via the play-offs, so for next season we will probably be seeking a similar standard of player to this from that cash in our pockets.

The real long-term view would EITHER have been to sign a couple of good players in the last few weeks to refresh and enliven our promotion bid by ensuring we finish in the top three, OR we could have brought young players onto our books primarily for next season, but who might now have learning to make the jump necessary to reach our level.

The first player on my list would have been Bailey Hobson only down the road at Alfreton. He's showing up really nicely in a midfield role for them despite fairly recently having been involved in the Rotherham Sunday League and showing his worth at Maltby Main.

Then I'd be taking a lingering look at Guiseley, despite them being bottom of National North. They have Josh Stones, a young centre forward, physically capable of playing higher who needs only time to up his goal ratio, and alongside him they can play 17 year old Jakub Hebda. Now both of them are still in education. Both were selected for England Schools and both are attracting interest. First-in with an offer of better football could have won the day. We could even have loaned them back to Guiseley and given them some chances to train with us .......

Next I'd be sidling up to a made-product. 21 year old Zico Asare at Oxford City. A right back, he came through the Fulham Academy, achieved some England youth recognition and has done well in National South.

Though he has failed elsewhere I'd also take a chance on Louis Walsh who is 22 I think. He was at Barnsley, went to Southend and they've let him go to Barnet where nothing much is happening, but he is a smooth wide player, who given confidence could have a goal or two in him.

Naturally I couldn't list this kind of player without mentioning my favourite Kane Drummond at Warrington Ryland. He's the first player they ever contracted. They are top of Northern Premier West. He plays wide, can come inside, is tougher than he looks, can score a goal and learned his stuff with Liverpool. Somebody give him a game in the EFL!!!!

Nikola Tavares at Wealdstone is still only 22 and he is another made player who could step into our line up in central defence, or full back. He has a touch of class about him and can read the game. He didn't make it at Crystal Palace, but he still wants to play League Football.

Though Weymouth is perhaps the last place we want to remember after what happened to Kabby, they have a midfielder called Mussa who is crying out to play in a better team. I think he's only 22.

And if we could get him I'd sign glamorous young Marcus Sablier from Bromley too. He even moves as though he knows he's got it.

None of these players would break the bank, except perhaps Sablier. All of them look like improving. Unfortunately I haven't got you a keeper, which we urgently need. If we are going forward don't we need some players with this kind of profile as well as our equivalent of perhaps a Madden, or a Mullin, or a Sarcevic?

LAST MATCH

Well, after a poor start we eventually saw off a plucky Cheltenham side. It took only 5 mins and Cheltenham were ahead as May got played in down the right and his shot deflected over BPF. Thankfully we levelled within 2 mins when Luongo  hooked in from close range. We bossed the rest of the half but couldn't find a second. Onto the 2nd half and we took the lead when Gregory controlled and fired in from 20+ yards. Cheltenham then struck the post, BPF made a save and we made several blocks. We then put the game to bed with 2 late goal, Hunt from a Johnson cross then Byers cut inside and fired past the goalie, the 4-1 scoreline a bit harsh on our visitors

THE MATCH

Next up Wimbledon make the journey north. To say Wimbledon are on a bad run, is an understatement as they haven't won a game in 21 games, which has led to there manager being shown the door earlier in the week. They are not too surprisingly in the relegation zone but are only 1 point from safety. There leading scorer is Jack Rudoni with 9 goals & 5 assists. A new manager hasn't been appointed yet and hopefully it will wait until after they have played us.

We're the first match on after the International break as we go to Hull on Friday evening. Located a stone's throw from the Humber, you may decide to head to Rotterdam after the match on P&O Ferries. Oh hang on a minute, even if you are willing to give your hard-earned to the morally challenged, the boat may not sail.  Doh

Last time out, in fact the last 3, have seen us finish as victors. In October, Tom Lees got the first and Duane Holmes the 2nd; one goal in each half.

From wearehullcity.co.uk:

Hull City parted company with Grant McCann in January. He of course went back to manage his former club, Peterborough, a match made in heaven, I'd say. In came Shota Arveladze from Georgia. He's somewhat of a legend there as he's their all-time leading goalscorer. His brothers and nephew were or are also in football.
His road to Hull
[Image: 1vWhBA2.png]
Currently in 20th position, they have been teetering between 18th and 23rd since match 3 of the season. Having not improved them, I'd say this chap Shota won't be long for the chop.

Don't let the last one drive you to Hull (or anywhere)
I wouldn't actually recommend having a tiger come for tea, either.
I've never seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
April Fools; love them or hate them?
I'll add managers ramblings if we get any. No idea on team news. I'm bushed. Out of 9 colleagues, I'm the only one who hasn't had covid, all but one came under the old isolation rules, too... not that I want them to come in with it, either!! Ridiculous state of affairs.

I have no idea why I've done a cartoon theme, either. May be I have tried to make Hull more fun?????

  Hibs v Dundee United, Sat 2 April,KO 3.00pm
Posted by: 0762 - 29-03-2022, 12:34 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (4)

Well this fixture is a massive one for Hibs in terms of remaining in the top six after the "split". It's a home match and one that the players must take full advantage of in front of what will be a huge Hibs support that realises the potential importance of the result even though Scot Prem results elsewhere may still benefit Hibs in retaining a top six spot. A good performance with a few goals wouldn't go amiss either TBH. Hopefully Paul Hanlon will be fit enough to return and play alongside Rocky in the centre of our defence. It would also be nice to see other missing injured players similarly returning to challenge for places esp with a Scot Cup semi-final looming ever closer. A goal drought up front is still a problem that must be resolved as we approach the "business end" of the season. Whether Shaun Maloney can redress this problem is anyone's guess - all down to the player resources at his disposal. C'mon Hibs!!

HTAFC Prediction League 2021/22 Matchday 36
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 28-03-2022, 12:50 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (18)

2 points for a correct result
4 points for a correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Random Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The random badger Badger is used for any random prediction used once in each matchday sequence. For instance, a scorer at a particular match, the number of red cards in the matches or yellow cards or own goals or owt you want really within reason, I do need to be able to check whether it's correct or not. Please don't put stuff like....."Commentator says...."  Rolleyes
The joker  Laugh is played for one match in each sequence and if correct you get double points. So if you've predicted 1-0 and it finishes 2-0, you get 4 pts, but if you've predicted 2-0, that's 8 pts. But if you get it wrong, it's minus 2.
Jokers and badgers are optional. You don't have to play one if you don't want.

Cup games:
In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. Similarly with the badger, if your random prediction is affected by this, it'll be half the points.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

NEW FOR THIS SEASON: End of season Play Offs.

The one who finishes top of the league will still be champion, but after the season finishes there will be Play Offs between the top 4, with 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd. This will take in stuff like the EFL Play Offs, FA Cup Final, final day of Prima Donna League, European Finals etc. It will be one matchday for the semis and one for the Final. It will be the individual scores for each matchday against the allotted opponent, with some kind of tie breaker for a drawn match.
So last season's matches would've been Baggiebob(BBB) v theo_luddite and jjamez v St Charles Owl and would've given a bit more to play for towards the back end of the season.
The prize for winning will be enormous. Another rep point. Whistle

We now have an Appeals Committee set up, consisting of me, myself and I. All appeals must be made before the next Matchday kicks off.
