Sorry.

Sorry I told you so.

Sorry, even I didn't expect 1-4 just yet.

Sorry you get another season of the National League.

Sorry all those players on the comeback trail was an April Fool. I think we did it to worry Grimsby about their tactics. That worked well then.

Even Killing Eve didn't cheer me up last night.

And tonight God will kill a few Shelbys and let Oswald Moseley live.

  Worcestershire CCC - 2022 Season
Posted by: Ska'dForLife-WBA - 02-04-2022, 21:44 - Forum: Cricket - Replies (58)

Worcestershire County Cricket Club

County Champions: 1964, 1965, 1974, 1988, 1989
One-Day Champions: 1991, 1994
T20 Champions: 2018

2022 Season

It's that wonderful time of year again. Peter's cathedral soars, Severn gleams blue and wide beyond the score-box, and with the fierce midday sun upon the ground, through heat-haze comes the wary sound of bat on ball. The Bob Willis Trophy - well-intentioned but unnecessary after 2020 - has been scrapped, the County Championship has been restored in its two-division glory, and for the first time in three years Worcestershire will be fighting for promotion.

2021 was a disappointment across the board, with few redeeming moments in any format.  Moreover, with departures galore - the retirement of Daryl Mitchell, the triple-exit of Riki Wessels, Ross Whiteley and Alex Milton - the county will be embarking on this campaign with a markedly different side to that which last competed in Division Two way back in September 2019. At the top of the batting order, Jake Libby will now take Mitch's place as the first to the crease each innings, and though the returning Ed Pollock has partnered him through the warm-up games, it's highly likely that Pakistan veteran and overseas signing Azhar Ali will fulfil that role in the season proper. Despite a very iffy first summer at New Road, it would appear that Gareth Roderick is currently favoured as number three in place of the struggling Tom Fell, while Jack Haynes should continue developing into a fine top-order batsman at four. In the middle order, new skipper Brett D'Oliveira will have a lot to prove, but Ed Barnard seems set to continue his evolution into a batting all-rounder at number six. As a back-up option, Taylor Cornall arrived from Lancashire last autumn and will have the chance to impress in the seconds with one eye on the first XI in future.

Batting was far from the only problem in 2021, with the county simply struggling to take twenty wickets week in, week out. Now relieved of the captaincy, it'll be up to Joe Leach to lead from the front and better his tally of 38 this time round, supported by Dillon Pennington as he continues to evolve into a prime new-ball bowler, the canny Charlie Morris and young Adam Finch. How much we'll see of yesteryear's wunderkind Josh Tongue - utterly plagued by injury in his career to date - remains to be seen, but spin revelation Josh Baker will undoubtedly be looking forward to his first full campaign after emerging with tons of promise in midsummer 2021. After losing Wayne Parnell the attack looked somewhat samey last year, and the county have sought to address that issue by signing left-armer Ben Gibbon from Lancashire; of course, once his IPL commitments are done we can also expect Moeen Ali to parachute in for a few high summer cameos.

The white-ball game will see another chance to shine for Pat Brown, who missed the 2021 Blast with back trouble. When he departs for Birmingham Phoenix, there'll be ample opportunity for Mitchell Stanley in the One-Day Cup. It's a tough division this year with some big dogs in the race, but after last summer, expectations are fairly moderate to say the least. Promotion is probably a pipe dream this time around, but if Dolly can inspire the team to cobble together a few wins and put 2021 well behind them, that'll be a start. Come on you Pears.

Rangers v Celtic, Sun 3 April - a "pivotal moment" in the title race!?
Posted by: 0762 - 01-04-2022, 22:45 - Forum: Celtic - Replies (4)

Just announced by Hun media that Morelos is definitely out of this potential "league decider" for the Hoops. It also looks like they are gonna field Aaron Ramsay who I reckon is definitely not a fully fit player and has previously been diagnosed as having weak muscle issues. A hi-press, frenetic match is in order then from a Celtic point of view or just "nail him" early doors! That ploy will quickly probe and find out where he is in the fitness stakes! I'll be watching with great interest what potentially monumental ref decision will be "pulled" to "keep them in the chase for the Scot Prem title. A dodgy red card? A dodgy pk with the usual Hun experts/pundits professing it was undoubtedly justified!!??? Remember this is an existential moment coming up where they would literally "kill" or bribe certain people to gain access to the Euro Champs League because they are undeniably still hugely in debt and they crave ECL involvement. Perhaps the assigned referee (Golum in this case) should've been realistically replaced by an independent one from another footie league? However, that would be setting a precedent! Rolleyes Celtic and Ange couldn't ask for any greater motivation to be playing such a match at this stage of the season with a three point lead and GD advantage that is worth another extra point. It looks like Kyogo may be fit, but whether he is match fit is debatable TBH! A lotta predictions being made by the "usual suspects", but ultimately this is about what happens on the pitch and who "takes in the pressure and enormity of this match"! IMO a hi-press and pacy strategy through the middle of their defence will pay huge dividends - study previous matches where they have been "unhinged" by teams that beat them with sheer pace and others that should've similarly beaten them, but profligate in front of McGregor's goal and indeed "missing sitters"!! An intriguing match looming ever closer and they need to "open up" and win it. A case of "who wants it most" as long as a so called impartial referee doesn't try to change the course of a match in some improper manner!! Deja vu!!

Qatar World Cup draw - Scotland play-off winner drawn in England's group!!!
Posted by: 0762 - 01-04-2022, 21:04 - Forum: The World Cup - Replies (3)

You couldn't make it up, but it provides a huge fillip to the Scotland players and the Tartan Army to get into Group B. The Wales fans and management will be thinking the same way. I think our full Scotland line up will be stronger than what Wales will provide against us - the "new kid on the block" hopefully appearing finally over the horizon with a decent group of maturing young players backed up by a good few top players. However, there's work to do before the play-off final takes place. ONE STEP AT A TIME - A SEMI-FINAL CHALLENGE TO NEGOTIATE OR NOT???? Bizarrely, we still don't really know when the final will be played either - June or September??? An absolute disgrace IMO!!

Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Group D: France, UAE/Australia/Peru, Denmark, Tunisia
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

Re the  draw itself, some "tasty" group games to be played out in the 1st phase of this tourney. IMO Germany the one to watch with great interest this time around. The Netherlands a definite "dark horse" with a strengthened defence this time. France never a country to dismiss either, but Denmark in the the same group D is a rapidly improving international side that could well advance quite far as well.
Re playing in Qatar itself, still some real moral dilemmas that can't be ignored by lotsa sporting people re the high cost in lives to provide this World Cup tournament plus their human rights violations. As usual, sports/footie exceptionalism prevails amid a lotta "talking a good game" while competing anyway! Rolleyes

Birmingham & Bournemouth vs WBA - Match Thread
Posted by: Ska'dForLife-WBA - 01-04-2022, 14:41 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (18)

[Image: 0-Birmingham-City-v-West-Bromwich-Albion...tadium.jpg]

With spring in the air, the B's are swarming for Albion this week with a brace of bostin' battles versus Birmingham and Bournemouth. It was under Steve Bruce that the Blues last tasted success against the Baggies way back in October 2006; since then, the eight league matches and one cup tie between the sides have yielded six Albion wins and three draws, our most sustained spell of derby dominance since the 1980s. Currently winless in three, though presumably safe from relegation for one more year, Birmingham are particularly susceptible to defeat if they concede first, having recovered only four points all season from losing positions; the lowest tally in the Championship. Nevertheless, the combination of a derby game and a Sunday match - Albion are winless on the Sabbath since July 2020 - may make this encounter a little more unpredictable than we'd like.

Bournemouth then visit the Hawthorns next Wednesday with a promotion position to consolidate. Logic says that what we did to Fulham on home soil we can also do to the Cherries, though they may be a bit less casual in their approach. Anything is really a bonus in this one, but four points from the two games overall would keep the playoffs just in sight and give us something to aim at in the season's closing weeks.
