MANAGER

John Eustace

Coaching career
Following his retirement as a player, Eustace moved into coaching. On 21 April 2016, he was named manager of National League side Kidderminster Harriers, signing a one-year contract until the end of the 2016–17 season.[37] While at the club, Eustace transformed the side's style of play,[38] with the Harriers being dubbed the "non-league Barcelona".[39] Eustace led his side to the play-offs in two seasons, as well as the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.[38]

He left the club on 25 May 2018 to join former manager Steve McClaren at Queens Park Rangers as assistant manager.[40] At QPR, he had a brief spell as caretaker manager in 2019,[41] helping the club avoid relegation from the Championship with 7 points from his 7 games in charge.[36] Following Mark Warburton's arrival as manager in May 2019, Eustace remained as his assistant and began studying for his UEFA Pro Licence.[36][42] In March 2022 he was named as Assistant Manager of the Republic of Ireland team under manager Stephen Kenny, while he would also continue his existing role at Queens Park Rangers.[43] Eustace, along with Matt Gardiner, left his role at Queens Park Rangers in June 2022 following the appointment of new manager Michael Beale.[44]

Eustace succeeded Lee Bowyer as head coach of Championship club Birmingham City on 3 July 2022. He signed a three-year contract.[45]

Preston North End are back at Deepdale to host Birmingham City this weekend after three successive games away from home.

In The Dressing Room

After limping off with an ankle injury in the midweek victory over Coventry City, Ben Woodburn is expected to go for a scan on Friday to discover the extent of his injury.

Bambo Diaby and Sean Maguire have both been back in training recently, and the Senegalese defender is ahead of the Irishman in his recovery according to Ryan Lowe, but there is a chance both could be available.

Andrew Hughes’ ongoing shoulder injury will also be assessed ahead of the weekend.

A Look At Our Visitors

There’s a new man in the dugout at St Andrew’s this season, with John Eustace taking the reins as head coach, and his side arrive at Deepdale after a mixed start to the Championship season.

They’ve won once, drawn twice and lost on four occasions so far, and they’ll still be hurting from the 93rd-minute Onel Hernandez goal which saw Norwich City earn a last-gasp victory in the Midlands on Tuesday night.

Birmingham could hand a debut to left back Emmanuel Longelo, on loan from West Ham United, while Hannibal Mejbri – a Manchester United loanee – will push for a first Blues start.

Going Head To Head

Games played: 101
PNE wins: 40
Draws: 25
Birmingham City wins: 36
Last meeting: PNE 1-1 Birmingham City, 15th January 2022

One To Watch

Brought in on loan from Arsenal in July, left-sided defender Auston Trusty has made a bright start to life with Blues.

All of the United States international’s previous experience came in his native country, playing for the likes of Philadelphia Union and Colorado Rapids, but he has adapted well to Championship football.

Fans have got right behind the 24-year-old, who has played every minute of league action so far, and he’ll be hoping to help his side to a second clean sheet of the season on Saturday.

Match Officials

James Bell will take charge of his first Preston North End game on Saturday afternoon.

The referee first stepped up to the Football League in the 2020/21 season, while he was promoted to take charge of Championship fixtures only this campaign.

So far this term, he’s taken charge of a Carabao Cup fixture and two second tier games, producing seven yellow cards in those fixtures.

MACS VIEW

Still playing cricket so will miss this which given the recent games between the two have been mostly dire , City struggling at the moment new man in charge, new players and still awaiting new owners, they seem to have been in a permanent flux since they sacked Rowett
We have to concede sooner or later if it happens tomorrow so be it but as long as we get one more than them. All our deadline day signings will not be making an appearance tomorrow

Hibs v Killie, Sat 3 Sept, KO 3.00pm
Posted by: 0762 - 02-09-2022, 13:50 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (3)

Well I think this is a game that Hibs can't afford to lose and they have not registered a home league win so far. IMO it's a "watershed moment" that will certainly tell us where Hibs are likely to end up as the season progresses. I wonder if it is too early to field the newly signed Harry McKirdy? We could do with him wearing the Hibs jersey now. Killie will prove to be a stuffy side looking to attain an Embro "double" in the space of 4 days after beating Hertz 0-1 in the PS Cup. I'm hoping Hibs can catch them out on a short recovery time from their cup match. Hi-press has to be the strategy and test out their legs to the limit. Gotta score goals to win this match. Hopefully somebody will "step up to the plate" and do it. I doubt it will be Youan after watching the French lad miss one of the easiest goal opps at the back post v St Mirren last week, a dreadful lack of striking ability Rolleyes C'mon Hibs!

LAST MATCH

Our first ever game v Forest Green and it ended in a nice rout. Most of the damage came in the first half when we knocked in four. Windass fired in after Palmers shot as was blocked. Bannan the got on the scoresheet with a close range lob after a mistake by one of there defenders. Then Palmer made it 2 in 2, firing in after his first shot was blocked. Then Gregory got on the scoresheet firing in from just inside the box and Byers nearly made it 5 but hit the post. It was soon 5 after the brake as one of there defenders prodded past his own keeper. The we shut up shop, though new signing Wilks nearly scored near the end.

THE MATCH

Our first derby of the season sees the Dingles make the short trip to Hillsborough. They haven't made the best start to the season and currently lie in 16th place. They are managed by Michael Duff, who had been in charge at Cheltenham for the last 4 years with a 40% win rate over them 4 years. There leading scorer is Josh Benson with 3 and 2 assists. They will be looking to finish in the top 6 and try and get back into the Championship, imo they might struggle to get into the 6.

WBA vs Burnley - Match Thread

Two points gained on the road against teams we traditionally struggle to beat away; four points dropped against teams, like Middlesbrough and Cardiff before them, who aren't exactly dominating the league. Results-wise, Albion's last week can be viewed as optimistically or pessimistically as you choose, but there's no escaping the fact that winning only one of the first seven is a poor return that's hardly balanced out by losing only one in the same period. In a relegation battle it would be cause for rejoicing, but - at the risk of showing the kind of hubris that invites some thunderbolt-wielding football deity to hurl you down to 24th place by December - Albion should not be fighting one of those in this division. Not yet, at least.

More wins are needed. But there are few tougher occasions to get that ball rolling than the visit of relegated Burnley to the Hawthorns on Friday night, which will ask some serious questions of team and manager alike. Though we've squared up against the Clarets numerous times in the Premier League over the last decade, our last two encounters ending in goalless draws, you have to go back to February 2008 for the last Championship game between the sides, a 2-1 Albion win under Tony Mowbray. Our solid home record over the last year is encouraging in spite of Burnley's lofty position, but the habit of conceding early goals that result in a mountain to climb simply has to go. With one Jay Rodriguez leading Burnley's three-pronged attack, supported by Nathan Tella and Vitinho, mistakes and openings at the back will prove costly, and safety must come first.

Brandon Thomas-Asante is the new face up front for Albion, with Callum Robinson likely to be departing to make room. If regarded as a swap, that breathtaking gamble suggests the scouts believe that the former Salford man will prove more Cyrille Regis than, say, Reuben Reid in making the step up. It's not just a hefty price tag that puts pressure on a striker, and I hope the young man will do himself proud in the months to come; I'd expect Karlan Grant to be favoured for the Burnley clash, but it'll be interesting to see if Thomas-Asante - or BTA, as I'm sure he'll be dubbed soon - gets his chance from the bench.

With a couple of local derbies and a trip to Norwich ahead, the games aren't going to get any easier. Sooner or later, Steve Bruce has to start delivering more than stalemates, and Friday night is the first opportunity.

  Prediction League Week 4 Results

Premier League

Derby          15pts 3CS 3CR 10GB -3BB 0SB
Stairs          13pts 1CS 5CR 0GB 3BB 0SB
Snooty        11pts 1CS 5CR -3GB 6BB 0SB
Minizin        10pts 1CS 5CR -3GB 3BB 0SB
Blue Baggie  10pts 1CS 5CR -3GB 0BB 1SB
Zinman        10pts 0CS 6CR -3GB 3BB 0SB
SCO              3pts 0CS 4CR -3GB -3BB 1SB
Sanjay          2pts 0CS 2CR -3GB 3BB 0SB

Finally a decent week for (most of) the Premiership. 6 players made it to double figures, we had our first bonus maximum and a familiar figure at the top of the table.

Derby only got 3 results correct - the 2nd lowest this week - but as all 3 of them were correct scores and one of them the gamball, he again tops the table though his bonus woes continued as he is the only player to got this ball wrong every week so far. 2nd to 5th all achieved 1 correct score with 4 other correct results and are separated only by their ball play. Stairs was one of 4 players to have their best week so far and holds 2nd spot thanks to saving 3 points by avoiding the gamball. Snooty gained the extra scoreball point to keep him 1 point above Minizin and Blue Baggie - Blue might have done better (or worse) but unfortunately messed up his balls, playing the scoreball twice rather than the bonus. Zinman also got his season started and had the most correct results this week though was unable to convert any into correct scores.

Not such a good week for SCO and Sanjay. SCO lost out on both the gamball and bonus but his scoreball point kept him 1 point off the bottom. Sanjay's poor start to the season continued but at least he doubled his total points to date!

Snooty 41
Minizin 34
SCO 23
Derby 19
Zinman 16
Blue 12
Stairs 12
Sanjay 4

Snooty and Minizin both continued their good starts but SCO's poor week sees him dragged back towards the chasing pack. Derby's recovery from a dreadful start continued as he moved a place up the table at the expense of Zinman. Stairs is now positive and level with Blue Baggie leaving Sanjay somewhat marooned at the foot of the table at this very early stage of the season. Derby and SCO are the only players to have overall positive scores on the gamball, with Minizin and Snooty both positive on their bonus selections. Derby is now the only player yet to score form the scoreball.

Championship

Themaclad 22pts 2CS 3CR 10GB 6BB 0SB
BBB 15pts 2CS 4CR -3GB 3BB 1SB
Dingle 11pts 0CS 6CR -3GB 3BB 1SB
AAA 10pts 1CS 4CR NPGB -3BB 1SB
Lady Jane 8pts 1CS 3CR -3GB 3BB 0SB
Amelia 2pts 0CS 4CR -3GB -3BB 0SB
Twerton 2pts 1CS 2CR -3GB -3BB 0SB
BaggieOne -2pts 0CS 2CR -3GB -3BB 0SB

So for the first time this season the Championship players finally had a half decent week!! Themaclad leads the way with a Championship season high score of 22, this was very much down to a CS on the Gamball and more amazingly on the Bonus as well. BBB also has his best score so far with 15 points, two CSs and a CR on the Bonus certainly helped. Dingle continues his fine start to the season with 11 points scoring on 6 games but no CSs kept his score down.

AAA is 4th with 10 points, another best and like Dingle if he had converted a few games into correct scores he would have accumulated more points. Lady Jane is 5th with 8 points, not her best week but not her worst either. Amelia and Twerton were tied with 2 points, neither of them got anything but negative points on their balls, a pattern they are going to need to change quickly!!

In last place this week was someone who deserves an apology from me, I obviously built him up too much last week and this week as a consequence BaggieOne's score fell off a proverbial cliff!! He finished on -2, missed on all his balls and only scored on two games!! I am sure its just a blip for a star like him!! Whistle

52 Themaclad
46 Dingle
44 BaggieOne
35 BBB
31 Lady Jane
13 AAA
11 Twerton
4 Amelia

Themaclad's high score this week sees him take over top spot with Dingle maintaining his second place. BaggieOne drops two places to 3rd after his poor week and BBB has closed the gap on the top 3 and is now in striking distance of them. Lady Jane is just behind BBB but after her there is a large gap down to AAA who went above Twerton with Amelia firmly stuck on the bottom. Twerton and Amelia have a combined -35 on their balls, compare that with a combined +40 that Themaclad and Dingle have and you can see where the problems lay!!

Cheers

Years of dinosaur football.

It's not working Bruce, it didn't work against Boro, it didn't work against Watford, it didn't work against Cardiff, it didn't work against Huddersfield and it hasn't worked against Wigan. IT ISN'T WORKING BRUCE.

Get another tactic, a plan B and a plan C or get out.

Lai give Albion back attacking attractive football. Act now before it's to late, we're only six points off top, for now. Still time to rescue this season, but not with this tactic.

Heaven help us
