Doncaster Rovers have sacked manager Gary McSheffrey, with the club 12th in League Two.

McSheffrey, 40, has been dismissed after a run of seven points from eight games, having also been in charge as the club were relegated last season.

But while Rovers described the results in League Two as "largely positive", they have cited "a lack of progress" as the reason for their decision.

Coaches Chad Gribble and Paul Green have been placed in temporary charge.

"While results so far in League Two have been largely positive, there has been a growing concern over the standard of performances in matches and a lack of progress between games," the club said in a statement.

"We feel this is threatening our ability to achieve our stated goals for the season."

McSheffrey, who spent most of his playing career at Coventry City and Birmingham City, had been Doncaster's under-18s manager when he was appointed as first-team boss last December, initially on an interim basis and then permanently a few weeks later to replace Richie Wellens.

The club were 23rd in League One when he was appointed but at no stage did they climb out of the relegation zone, even if they only officially went down on the final day of last season as they finished 22nd.

After making a number of new signings in the summer, Doncaster began their League Two campaign well, and they were third on 27 August following a 1-0 win at Northampton Town as they began the season with six games unbeaten.

But since then, they have collected just two wins from eight games, culminating in the 3-0 loss at Carlisle United on Saturday.

And, after winning 14 of his 46 games in charge, the club's board felt it was in their best interests to remove McSheffrey as they seek an immediate return to League One.

Posted by: themaclad - 17-10-2022, 20:54 - Forum: Rochdale - No Replies

Rochdale have been given a six-point deduction by the English Football League, suspended for two years, for failure to comply with the league's regulations over an attempted takeover.

The club were charged by the EFL in March following an investigation after Morton House MGT's attempted takeover.

The charge related to a breach of the owners' and directors' test.

Dale pleaded guilty, with former CEO David Bottomley given a two-year ban from operating as a relevant person.

Bottomley, who has since worked chief operating officer at National League North side AFC Fylde, left Dale in June 2021 having been voted off the board by shareholders.

Andrew Curran and Darrell Rose were also given two-year bans by the EFL with Faical Safouane handed an 18-month ban for their role in the breaches of regulations.

In a statement the EFL said their actions "deprived" them of being able to carry out investigations into proposed business plans and the source and sufficiency of funding.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said: "The updated owners' and directors' test is a crucial element of the EFL's regulatory responsibilities in the interests of all its member clubs, their supporters and everyone else involved or interested in football.

"The breaches in this case were serious as they deprived the EFL of the ability to carry out he necessary investigations into the identity of the proposed new owners, their proposed business plans, and the ultimate source and sufficiency of funding necessary to support those plans.

"These sanctions serve as an appropriate reminder to clubs, their officials and potential owners that disregarding those requirements can lead to significant consequences as this case has proved."

Kick-off 19:45 UK Time
Tuesday 18/10/22

Every season (almost) it seems at least one club that either just misses out on the play-offs, or blobs in the play-offs, falls like a stone the next season.
There's no way that's happening to Town I said - er, except it has and not just us either (looking at you Boro) and Coventry have barely won at all in 2022.
The excuses need to stop and the goals need to start going in, for us anyway - don't care about the other two.

Another hoard of them there Lancastrians head across the Pennines on Tuesday night as Preston Both Ends turn up for what could oh so easily be another not so rip-roaring 0-0 draw, which would be an improvement for us on the score line in August and last Saturday at the Windy Millers.

The team that can't win (very often) plays the team that can't score (well, not so very often) though they are also pretty effective at stopping the other team scoring too (usually).

Latest news

The natives are getting a bit restless due to a shortage of wins, a lack of goals, especially at home, soft goals being conceded and now the stand roof is leaking and there's allegedly no brass to fix it with.

The club's point of view

So - read that as they've bought a couple of rolls of gaffa tape and a tube of clear bathroom sealant from the local Machine Mart and are working on it?
They've now got to find someone willing to do a bit of roof crawling while someone points a sprinkler at the stand roof.

Two goals at home in 8 games makes us look prolific. That said, we made them look prolific in the EFL Cup tie earlier in the season.
They subsequently had only scored 4 in the league until they went to Norwich and scored 3 all in one game.

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

From what I gathered from the pressers there's no new injuries for us ...

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

... and there's been no new miracle cures out there either.

Last time out

Town lost 2-1 away at Rotherham, a game where with better passing/finishing in the box we could have been out of site by half-time.
There was also another debateable penalty shout but when do we ever get those?

Both Ends lost 0-2 at home to a suddenly resurgent Stoke side, now managed by former Both Ends boss, Alex Neil who was warmly welcomed back to Deepdale at 3pm, and probably not quite so warmly waved away at 5pm.

Did a lot of "session" work too. So here he is doing one with rubber faced Lancastrian Phil Cool, from just up the road in Chorley.

The Sack Race

In addition to Bruce getting the chop at WBA last week, lost in all that noise was James Rowberry at Newport.
No new permanent appointments have been made so far in, ooh, quite a few cases.
Aldershot have fired theirs out the cannon too this weekend, but that's non-league.

Tables, (lack of) Form & all that.

Both Ends have drawn 7 of their 15 league matches. 5 of their first 7 games were 0-0 draws, the other two were 0-1 wins at Luton and Coventry.
They've not scored in 9 of their games and have stopped the opposition scoring in 9 too.
12 of their 19 points have been gained on the road where they have only lost once (2-1 at Brizzle last Wednesday).
Hmmm. They were a bit like this a couple of seasons back I seem to remember.

Town on t'other 'and 'ave nowt to shout about either.

Innies and Outies

Former Town loanee Izzy Brown spent the best part of last season there injured. He's still looking for somewhere else to get injured this season.

Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was part of the England U20 squad that won the World Cup in 2017 - I may have mentioned this in an earlier thread not too long ago that had nowt to with Both Ends, or England come to that. Let's keep up the recycling eh?
With the Fog on the Tyne now heavily polluted with Arab oil brass, developing local talent is a bit lower in priority up there, so I don't blame him for going somewhere where he'll get a regular game.

Who's banging 'em in

Other than the 4 they put in our onion bag - this could be the sum total of their league goals (I haven't checked).

They can't all lose, or win either

Coventry play Sheff Utd, Boro are at Wigan, Hull head across country to Blackpool, WBA are at home to Brizzle.

We've played 'em before

Town are ahead by 1 in the League, but behind by 1 when you throw the Cup games in. So nowt in it then.
Oh, and they stuck 4 past us in the League Cup back in August, just in case you missed that, I may have mentioned it before.

Next up?

Boro away next weekend

Pressers

Fotheringham's fables (foibles surely?)
His presser started at 12:45, how long does it take to get the bloody thing on YouTube for heavens sake?
Interesting, I've been refreshing the Town web page about every 30 mins since 2pm, it's now 4pm and it now comes up saying it was posted an hour ago. Yeah, OK, there's another page there you now claim was posted 5 hours ago. (Pah!!)

LAST TIME OUT

FORM GUIDE

HUDDERSFIELD 8 PNE 10

MANAGER

MARK FOTHERINGHAM

Coaching career
Tomas Oral, head coach of German side Karlsruher SC, knew Fotheringham from his time as assistant to Felix Magath at Fulham. He convinced him to join him at Karlsruhe and after a few days as a guest he signed as assistant coach on 1 July 2016.

Fotheringham was appointed player-assistant manager of Scottish League Two club Cowdenbeath in 2017. He left Cowdenbeath in 2019 and returned to Germany, again as assistant coach of Oral at German 2nd tier club FC Ingolstadt. Ingolstadt got relegated to 3rd division, Oral and Fotheringham left the club. The following March, Ingolstadt being outside of the promotion spots, they took over again. Ingolstadt managed promotion to the 2nd tier, Oral and Fotheringham left afterwards. In March 2022 he became Magath's assistant coach at Bundesliga club Hertha BSC.

On 28 September 2022, Fotheringham was appointed head coach of EFL Championship side Huddersfield Town on a contract until June 2025, the club sitting in 23rd position at the time of his appointment.

FAMOUS HUDDERSFIELD LANDMARKS

The Lawrence Batley Theatre is a theatre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England which offers drama, music, dance and comedy.

The theatre is named after Lawrence Batley, a local entrepreneur and philanthropist, who founded a nationwide cash and carry chain.

The building was originally built in 1819 as a Methodist chapel, called the Queen Street Chapel.[1] The architect is unknown but the chief mason was Joseph Kaye, the man who was also responsible for Huddersfield station.[1][2] It was opened on 9 July 1819 and the reporter in the Leeds Mercury described it as "one of the most handsome and commodious chapels in the kingdom; being capable of accommodating 3000 persons, and has been erected at an expense of from 8 to £10,000".[3] The chapel became a mission in 1906 until a decline in numbers saw the mission move out of the building in 1970 to a new building in King Street.[4] In 1973 the building was converted into an arts centre. However serious structural problems were discovered by Kirklees Metropolitan Council in 1975 and the Arts Centre was rehoused into Venn Street Arts Centre and the building remained vacant before being sublet to Novosquash Limited and converted to a squash club known as The Ridings. It also housed a restaurant and a The Catacombs Disco.[5][6] In 1989 the Kirkless Theatre Trust was given the go ahead to save the building from deterioration and launch Huddersfield's newest theatre. Building work for the theatre started in September 1992 and took 4 years to complete.

In The Dressing Room

PNE will check on the fitness of Daniel Johnson and Liam Lindsay ahead of Tuesday night, after both missed out through injury at the weekend.

17-year-old Finlay Cross-Adair was involved for the first time on Saturday, making his professional debut against Stoke City, and he’ll be hoping to be included once again.

Troy Parrott is the only player definitely unavailable, with his hamstring injury keeping him out until December.

A Look At Our Hosts

There’s been a change of management at the John Smith’s Stadium in recent weeks, with Hertha BSC assistant coach Mark Fotheringham replacing Danny Schofield.

Under Schofield – who was boss when PNE won 4-1 in the Carabao Cup away from home earlier this year – the Terriers had made a below-par start to the campaign, finding themselves towards the bottom of the table following their Play-Off final defeat last season.

Now with Fotheringham in charge, he’s led his side to four points in his four games so far, most recently suffering a Yorkshire derby defeat to Rotherham United.

Going Head To Head

Games played: 97
PNE wins: 37
Draws: 24
Huddersfield Town wins: 36
Last meeting: Huddersfield Town 1-4 PNE, 9th August 2022

One To Watch

One of the Terriers’ top performers this season has been Sorba Thomas, who has carried over his impressive form from the last campaign.

Having assisted 12 goals in the Championship on their way to the Play-Offs last term, winger Thomas has already registered six assists in his 13 matches this season.

The former Boreham Wood man – capped six times by Wales – will be hoping to continue his form ahead of the Qatar World Cup.

Match Officials

Andy Woolmer will referee his third Preston North End game of the season on Tuesday night.

Woolmer has taken charge of two goalless draws for PNE this term, away at Cardiff City and Sunderland over the past two months.

He has officiated ten games this campaign, showing 39 yellow cards and two reds, and he’ll be assisted by Philip Dermott and Geoffrey Liddle, while David Webb is the fourth official.

MACS VIEW

Almost predict the score given the ref has done two of our games and both have been 0-0. Eight goals in 15 games, on Saturday we didn't eve have a shot on goal, lots of folks are beginning to lose a bit of faith in Mr Fantastic. Good news is we actually scored four here in the League Cup a couple of months ago however this will be different, new manager bounce etc.
Big week two losses tomorrow against those Tangerine folk and his job is on the line

  Sack race continues
Posted by: Devongone - 17-10-2022, 12:38 - Forum: Aldershot - No Replies

Aldershot have sacked both their Manager and his assistant, Molesley and Prodomo I think. Terry Brown who has wide non-league experienece at the age of 70 has taken temporary charge.

Aldershot lost 2-0 at Chelmsford in the FA Cup, but to be fair Chelmsford are a decent side by all accounts.

Also, on Saturday the racehorse Aldershot made her debut at Market Rasen in a Bumper (National Hunt Flat race). After lying in second she appeared to run out of stamina and finished 9th of 10. The bad news is 2 miles is the minimum National HUnt distance except for races of this kind, which was a couple of furlongs less. So, if she doesn't stay this trip she'll struggle. Certainly, her pedigree suggests she won't last out. Neither her sire, nor dam won beyond a mile. Her grandsire managed two furlongs further just once .......

Salts - Back to the Future?
Posted by: Devongone - 16-10-2022, 12:11 - Forum: Chesterfield - Replies (13)

Was Salts suffering from a strange glimpse into the future when he enquired about Luke Shaw of Coalville, thinking he was an ex-Chesterfield player. which he almost immediately realised he wasn't?

Yesterday not only did Coalville manage to win away at Notts County in the FA Cup, but who grabbed the 86th winner for them but Luke Shaw.

Now if the draw for First Round Proper pairs Chesterfield and Coalville, get down to Ladbrokes when Salts publishes his prediction.

Reading & Bristol City vs WBA - Match Thread

Having successfully taken Albion from borderline playoff contenders to relegation dogfighters in under nine months, Steve Bruce can finally resume his no-less-impressive contributions to the world of literature and leave someone else to pick up the pieces at the Hawthorns. Exactly who that may be remains uncertain at this moment in time, which means we'll be visiting Reading on Saturday - and perhaps even welcoming Bristol City in midweek - without a permanent boss at the helm.

Flying high in 5th place, the Royals have lost their last three encounters with Albion, but have never in history made it four defeats in a row against the Baggies. Form is also on their side, as they've lost just one at the Madejski so far this season, while the Baggies continue to endure their worst winless run outside the top flight since February 2000. It's probably a bit early for a new manager bounce, but if we can find a sacked-the-old-manager bounce from somewhere, the points would be welcome this week.

Celtic v Hibs, Sat 15 October, KO 3.00pm

https://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/article/jo...eltic-test

This could be a good time to play Celtic right after a UCL match/defeat v RB Leipzig. I think we need to "test out legs" if we can and also "battle" and defend our midfield positions in front of Hanlon and Porto. I've no doubt that's where they'll dominate us. They don't have McGregor doing it in this area of the pitch, but they still have players who can do a job in there. Their game v RB Leipzig confirmed that fact and how unlucky they were to lose that match - gotta take the scoring opps, didn't do it!! As usual, my concern is our strikers don't score goals and haven't done it for months. It must surely be a record for the club. I notice Sparky is home again and now a free agent - worth a punt as a fringe player/back up? Boyly provides my main hope of possibly causing an upset. C'mon Hibs!! We're in 3rd place; try to stay there!!
