Coventry vs WBA - Match Thread

In the midst of an ever-escalating injury crisis, four points from our back-to-back home games was pretty much what the doctor ordered, and so our next road trip comes on Monday evening with a visit to The Arena Formerly Known As Ricoh to face Coventry, whose unlikely charge to the playoff final in May has given way to an apparent season of struggle after the loss of top scorer Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon in the summer. Six points above the drop zone and winless in three, the Sky Blues are no less injury-stricken than we are, with Liam Kelly, Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer all ruled out of this one and Callum O'Hare also unlikely to start. Haji Wright and Matt Godden are therefore the goal-threat, with centre-half Kyle McFadzean chipping in from set-pieces.

The Birmingham match aside, Corberan has done tremendously well over the last month in shoring up the Albion defence, and a clean sheet tomorrow would be a springboard to victory. Coventry's win in the corresponding fixture last Christmas was a reminder that not every encounter between the sides can end in an Albion romp, so a point would be welcome here; still, a win would be a very achievable bonus if we can manage it.

HTAFC Prediction League 2023/24 Matchday 14
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 29-10-2023, 20:09 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (19)

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Random Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The random badger Badger is used for any random prediction used once in each matchday sequence. For instance, a scorer at a particular match, the number of red cards in the matches or yellow cards or own goals or owt you want really within reason, I do need to be able to check whether it's correct or not. Please don't put stuff like....."Commentator says...."  Rolleyes
The joker  Laugh is played for one match in each sequence and if correct you get double points. So if you've predicted 1-0 and it finishes 2-0, you get 4 pts, but if you've predicted 2-0, that's 8 pts. But if you get it wrong, it's minus 2.
Jokers and badgers are optional. You don't have to play one if you don't want.

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. Similarly with the badger, if your random prediction is affected by this, it'll be half the points.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

End of season Play Offs: The one who finishes top of the league will still be champion, but after the season finishes there will be Play Offs between the top 4, with 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd. This will take in stuff like the EFL Play Offs, FA Cup Final, final day of Prima Donna League, European Finals etc. It will be one matchday for the semis and one for the Final. It will be the individual scores for each matchday against the allotted opponent, with some kind of tie breaker for a drawn match.

The prize for winning will be enormous. Another rep point. Whistle

So we have a new format for this season, which I put forward as an idea at the end of last season. Nobody offered any objections so here it is explained......

Firstly, I thought it was getting a bit boring towards the end with the league format as it was with the champion being so far ahead and everybody else not much to play for apart from the push for a play off spot, which was a bit of an anticlimax anyway. The most exciting bit was the tussle for 8th, 9th and 10th positions with Shep, Ritchie and Amelia.  Whistle

So I'm splitting the group up into two groups with the top six from last season in the top group and the bottom six in group 2. At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the New Years Day games and the FA Cup 3rd round weekend.

The second season will start the following week, finishing on the last game of the Championship season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of Championship fixtures and bonus matches. And not as many fixtures to go at. Hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The rest of the rules will be the same as before apart from the Badger which will still be in use, but I'm going to get arsey about it. Sometimes in the past, I've been able to just award two points immediately because it was such a nailed on thing to happen. Not accusing anyone of cheating. Far from it. I didn't put any boundaries on it, so anything was alright. So now I'm restricting it to three goal scorers in any of the games in your group. Sorry to all our more adventurous badgerers.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

The joker  Laugh will still be the same as before, ie doubling your points for a correct prediction or minus 2 for getting it wrong.

Hibs v Ross County - Tuesday 31 October
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 29-10-2023, 19:13 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (4)

Hibs are offering heavily discounted tickets at £10 for adults as an Halloween Treat, a marketing Trick to be admired. No more scary stuff on the pitch, please, with hopefully the same team/bench as usual. Not that we have many options to do differently until our injury absentees are ready. A win against The Staggies would see us zoom up into 4th equal place in the table (for a day at least, anyway).

Ross County let a 2-goal lead against Motherwell slip away in the last 10 minutes yesterday, showing a late vulnerability. Ex-Hibees Ross Laidlaw and Simon Murray could have a big say in the eventual outcome on Tuesday.

Posted by: themaclad - 29-10-2023, 19:11 - Forum: Bristol City - No Replies

Bristol City have sacked manager Nigel Pearson after two and a half years in charge, with the Robins 15th in the Championship.

The club have lost five of their past seven matches with Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Cardiff Pearson's final game.

The 60-year-old was appointed in February 2021, initially on a short-term deal, and was the second-longest serving manager in the Championship.

His contract was due to expire at the end of this season.

"This was a difficult decision to make as we recognise and appreciate how much Nigel has done for the club over the past two and a half years on and off the pitch," said club chairman Jon Lansdown.

"Nigel is highly respected by the staff and players and has been very supportive of the academy structure and our women's team.

"We all wanted Nigel to achieve our ambition to be promoted but, with our recent results, feel that now is the time to make a change to give the club the best possible chance of success."

Assistant manager Curtis Fleming will take on the role of interim head coach, while a new appointment is made.

Former Leicester and Watford manager Pearson signed a three-year deal until 2024, but after the loss to Coventry last weekend he said that he may be "fighting for his job" with the contract soon to expire.

"My position has not been secure, which irritates me," Pearson told BBC Radio Bristol.

The team finished 14th in the Championship last season and have won five of their 14 league matches during this campaign, with three draws and six defeats.

Pearson is the sixth manager to leave a club in the second tier this season, with Gareth Ainsworth sacked by QPR on Saturday.

First-team coach Jason Euell has also left Bristol City, along with head of medical performance Dave Rennie.

'A big, controversial decision'
Analysis - Richard Hoskin, BBC Radio Bristol sport editor

There's been a lot of 'noise' in recent days about the future of Nigel Pearson, ever since he expressed his "irritation" that the club hadn't opened contract negotiations about a new deal.

In his time at Ashton Gate, Pearson has trimmed the squad and wage bill - losing Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott to Bournemouth, with the significant transfer fees received for these players not appearing to be reinvested in the squad.

He also gave youngsters like Sam Bell and Tommy Conway opportunities and they're now among key first-team players.

In recent weeks he's been walking with crutches, as he waited for more tests to diagnose a "neurological situation".

Against Cardiff on Saturday, the Robins were hindered by an ever-growing injury list.

It's a big, dare I say controversial decision by the Lansdown family - with a lot of City supporters backing Pearson.

LOCAL HISTORY

Hull was a medieval wool port that passed from the monks of Meaux Abbey to Edward I, king of England, in 1293. Edward renamed the town Kingston upon Hull. It prospered as the chief seaport for the shipping on the inland waterways that converge on the estuary of the River Humber.

Who’s Available?

Ryan Lowe will provide a team news update in his pre-match press conference, but everybody appeared to make it through Wednesday’s clash with Southampton unscathed.

Before that meeting with the Saints, the manager said there was a “big, big possibility” of Andrew Hughes returning for the visit to Hull, but his progress will continue to be monitored.

Ali McCann, Calvin Ramsay, Emil Riis and Jack Whatmough will be expected to miss out.

Opposition Focus

In his first full season as manager, Liam Rosenior has overseen a positive start to the campaign – picking up 20 points from 13 matches.

The 39-year-old, who took over in November 2022 for his first managerial role, led the Tigers to a 15th-placed finish last term, and has since added plenty of quality to the ranks.

Having gone four without a win, Hull came out 2-0 victors over Birmingham City on Wednesday, with former North End striker Liam Delap scoring his fourth goal of the season that night.

A Recent Clash

Cameron Archer scored his second goal for PNE to earn a 1-0 victory over Hull City in February 2022.

Match Officials

Referee: Lewis Smith
Assistant Referees: Alex James and Matthew Smith
Fourth Official: Martin Woods

Having recently been promoted to the next level of refereeing, Lewis Smith will take charge of his first Preston North End match at the weekend.

So far this campaign, Smith has shown 62 yellow cards and three reds in 15 matches, in a variety of competitions.

MACS VIEW

A quick turnaround of to Humberside against a vastly improved Hull side, 2000 plus away support also massive thanks to the Hull board for the ticketing prices £15 max or a £10 for us old gadges a bargain. No doubt we will triple the prices for the return

Wednesday was a much better performance sets the standard still a sod we didn't win but that was then this is now. Look forward to the pre match stroll around the ground and up to the hospital, traditional now

  Hibs v Celtic - Saturday 28 October
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 26-10-2023, 22:27 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (11)

Hibs welcome Celtic to Easter Road on Saturday for a game that could feature another chastening defeat for Hibs. I wouldn't presume to forecast the score, but we will be farting against thunder and I can't see our defence keeping out the Celtic strikers.

Still, we won the last game 4-2 in May and, although Celtic might have had their eyes on a bigger game ahead, Hibs were well worth the win. Hibs do have players who can win the game, but Celtic probably have more. A loss wouldn't define our season and a win, or even a draw, could get our confidence up for the visit of Ross County on Tuesday. Let's hope we put in a decent performance.

Leeds United v Huddersfield Town
The Sky Bet Championship
Saturday October 28th - 12:30 ko
at Elland Road

Huddersfield Town travel to Beeston, in the leafy suburbs of Leeds to the big yellow skip on Saturday lunchtime for 81st proper West Yorkshire derby, between the two biggest rivals in the history of football. Even though Leeds think Man Utd are their biggest rivals, this will be their biggest crowd of the season and it's as much their Cup Final as it is ours.

Looking at the two squads, there's no way we can get anything from this match. They have international players from across the globe, and Featherstone. We have lads from AFC Wimbledon, MK Dons and Solihull Moors. They're just below automatic promotion. We're just above automatic relegation. They have a well respected German Head Coach with a superb managerial record. We have replaced the most successful English manager with a bloke who struggled to get Sheffield Wednesday promoted from League One. That's the massive Sheffield Wednesday, by the way.

And if you're only as good as your last game, then we are utter shite!

Leeds however, did lose at Smoke-on-Stench on Wednesday night, leaving us only 8 points behind them in a ridiculously tight Championship table. If we win this, we'll be five points behind them, still fighting relegation, while they will still be promotion candidates.

Head to Head

Town lead the head to head with 32 wins to United's 29, with 19 draws.

So what's going on down at the old yellow skip? Managed nowadays by Daniel Farke, a 46 year old German geezer from Steinhausen.

After a mediocre playing career, he became manager of SV Lippstadt 08, before taking on the job as coach to the reserve side of German club Borussia Dortmund when David Wagner left to become our Head Coach in 2015. He did such a good job there that when HTFC Sporting Director, Stuart Webber left Town for Norwich, he decided to see if lightning could strike twice by appointing Dortmund's reserve coach again. And to some extent, it did work.

He won the Championship title twice with the Canaries, but couldn't stop them getting immediately relegated on each occasion, finally getting sacked just prior to that second relegation, following a record 15 consecutive defeats. Ironically, he was given the heave-ho the day after beating Brentford to end that terrible run.

After a couple of months out of work, he ended up in Krasnodar Krai, managing FC Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League. However, he never took charge of a match. They were in the winter break when he arrived and by the time the season had restarted, yond prick Vladimir Putin had gone and invaded Ukraine.

So he then went home to Germany, landing the job at Borussia Mönchengladbach, but after another mediocre season, he was sacked. That left him free to join the freshly relegated BellEnders in July.

Club connections:

The date of this week's match at Elland Road marks 83 years since the death of Fred Walker, the first ever manager of Huddersfield Town, who died in Leeds, aged 62 on this date in 1940. He also played for Leeds City, not technically a club connection, but they did play at the same ground.

He was born in 1878 and so would've been 30 years old when he took to the field as player/manager of our first ever match, in the North-Eastern League, away at South Shields Adelaide. He was from up in that neck of the woods having been born in Longbenton and starting his playing days with Hebburn Argyle as an amateur, combining this with his day job as a brass founder.

After a couple of seasons there, he went over to the west coast and played a couple of seasons, as captain, with Barrow. But then he was signed by Leeds City in 1905 and a had a chance to play in the Football League with the newly elected Peacocks.

He had three seasons down Bellend Road, playing at centre half mainly, but all along the back line at times when needed for cover. Sadly, he missed most of the 1907/08 season with a bad illness and was allowed to leave at the end of the season.

Luckily for him, it was to join what would become the greatest football club in the world. But obviously nobody knew that then and so when the board of directors of the newly formed Huddersfield Town appointed him as manager/secretary, he was unsure how things would progress.

They progressed alright actually. He played in that first ever game, playing 21 times in that first season. He only played twice in the Midland League season (1909/10) before hanging up his boots and concentrating on managing the club and on getting the team elected into the Football League.

He did play in a couple of the FA Cup games and scored his only goal for the club in a 7-0 win against Rothwell White Rose at Leeds Road. In the next round of the Cup, Fred got his career ending injury against the rough house tactics of South Kirkby Colliery. He was deliberately kneed in the head and was carried off unconcsious and spent a week in hospital. The internal injuries meant that he was to pack in on medical advice.

Town did get elected into the FL at the end of the 09/10 season and Fred wasn't offered the job. Or so we thought.......

Following extensive research by the HTFC Heritage Project, we have more details. He was actually still in charge when the new season started and was manager for the first game in the Football League Second Division, an away win against Bradford Park Avenue. He was in charge for the first 14 games of that season, eventually replaced by Dick Pudan, a player he had signed from Leicester Fosse, who was given the manager's job in November 1910. Fred stayed on as assistant, but only for a month when he left the club in December.

There were no details of the rest of his life until this excellent research found that....

In 1911, he became manager of F.C. Nürnberg in Germany. This was discovered after he was briefly mentioned in a book by Ulrich Hesse, Tor! The History of German Football. That brief mention was that his grasp of the German language was minimal. So minimal that he got by by just using two words. "Beer! Good!" (Sounds like a script from Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! Laugh )

He managed to get by for a couple of years, returning to Huddersfield in 1913 when he was named as the co-respondent in a divorce case, heard in the Divorce Court. This was a scandal at the time and the affair had started when he was Town manager.  Fred and Edith eventually got married in Newcastle in 1914.

Fred then became the licensee of The Wheatsheaf Inn in Bradford. That was for five years before he took on The Fountain Inn in Morley, in 1922 and then in 1924, he returned to Huddersfield to run The Black Bull in Berry Brow.

They moved to Leeds in 1935 and then sadly Fred died in 1940 at St. James University Hospital, Leeds, of streptococcus meningitis due to oral media. Whatever that means. Answers on a postcard please.

He's buried at Harehills Cemetery in Leeds.

Leeds in popular culture:

Leeds is famous for one thing, apart from the Ripper murders and a certain Radio DJ nonce. Tetley's Brewery! Founded in 1822 by Joshua Tetley in Hunslet, the brewery was situated on the south banks of the River Aire near Crown Point, Hunslet and Clarence Dock. Fermenting took place in stainless steel Yorkshire squares and conical vessels, the slate Yorkshire squares dated from about the 1880s. These were demolished when Carlsberg took over in 1998 and closed the brewery down shortly after.

We once had a work's trip to Tetley's. It was one of the most badly organised night outs ever. A right waste of time which summed up our firm. Couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

They did some good adverts for Tetley Bitter. Here's one starring the late great Jim Bowen.

So the question is, where did you get the best pint of Tetley's from? In my humble opinion, it was the Market House in Dewsbury (now a hardware store). Did you have a favourite Tetley pub? I actually proposed to Amelia in one of their lovely locals, in wonderful down town Batley. Tongue

LAST MATCH

I thought we played ok, but defensive errors, a wonder strike and no one to put the ball in the net saw us lose 3-0. For the first 40 minutes we were the better team and had several opportunities but as usual could not find the target. The just before HT, we conceded a FK on the edge of the D and their forward smashed it into the top corner. It was quickly 2 due to a defensive howler, Valentin giving the ball away and Whittaker made it 2. Onto the 2nd half and we huffed and puffed but never really looked like scoring unlike Plymouth who got there 3rd midway through the half, Hardie with a composed finish.

THE MATCH

Next up and Rotherham make the short journey to Hillsborough. The Millers are currently in 22nd place, but did win their last game against Coventry on Wednesday night. Rotherham don't score many goals (12) but that is 7 more than us, Jordan Hugill is there leading scorer with 3. They are managed Matt Taylor who had previously been in charge of Exeter, who he got promoted in the 21-22 season, before joining Rotherham in October last year. Although we obviously need 3 points, I'd be quite happy if we scored a goal, whatever that is Doh
