  Wayne's World
Posted by: themaclad - 25-05-2024, 17:20 - Forum: Plymouth Argyle - Replies (3)

Championship side Plymouth Argyle have appointed former England captain Wayne Rooney as their new head coach.

The 38-year-old succeeds Ian Foster, who was sacked on 1 April after a poor run of results.

It is Rooney's first role since he was sacked by Birmingham City on 2 January after a disappointing reign of less than three months in which he lost nine of 15 games.

Blues, who were in the Championship play-off places when Rooney took over, were relegated to League One earlier this month.

The Pilgrims job is a fourth head coach role for Rooney - who was England's top scorer with 53 goals until his mark was beaten by Harry Kane in March 2023.

He was Derby County boss during a period of financial difficulties.

Rooney guided the Rams to Championship survival in May 2021 in his first season in charge, but left a year later following the club's relegation after Derby had been docked a total of 21 points for their financial problems.

He spent 15 months as boss of DC United in the United States, but left last October to take on the Birmingham job, having failed to guide the Washington-based side to the Major League Soccer (MLS) play-offs.

First-team coaches Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland, and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan will form part of Rooney’s backroom staff, with further additions to be made in due course.

'The perfect next step in my career'

Rooney has already had experience of Home Park and the club's 'Green Army' fanbase during a 3-3 draw with Birmingham in December - the Pilgrims' first game after former boss Steven Schumacher's departure for Stoke City.

"Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the chairman and board for the faith they have shown in me," Rooney said.

"This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.

"I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park.

"The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it."

Argyle chairman Simon Hallett said Rooney approached the club when they began the process of recruiting their next head coach having ensured survival on the final day of the season.

"Throughout the interview process, Wayne showed himself to be a passionate, intelligent, and knowledgeable candidate with an appetite to prove himself and develop his managerial career," added Hallett.

"So much so, that he reached out to the board when we started this process and was attracted by the project at hand and showed a real plan on how to lead the football club forward.

"His ambitions and aims match ours perfectly and we feel he is the perfect candidate to provide the exciting and attacking brand of football that we all like to see and help us achieve the club's mission."

Is Plymouth the place for Rooney to show his managerial talents?

Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip coached Wayne Rooney as a youngster at Everton

Rooney's managerial career has so far failed to follow the trajectory of his playing days, which saw him burst on the scene as a teenager at Everton before going on to become Manchester United's record goalscorer and England captain.

But could Plymouth be the perfect place for him to finally show his talents?

While Argyle are financially far from some of the big-budget ex-Premier League sides in the Championship, they have an owner in Simon Hallett who is ambitious and has a plan for a sustainable club.

The Pilgrims have shown great skill in bringing in young players and developing their talents - the likes of Morgan Whittaker and Finn Azaz thrived at Home Park this season.

He will also be at a club that can sign players - Derby's financial situation was such that Rooney had one hand tied behind his back in terms of transfers, while he left Birmingham before he was able to operate in the January transfer window.

Argyle twice spent a club-record £1m on players last summer in Whittaker and fellow former loanee Bali Mumba, and the club will likely have similar funds to spend this close season.

And while the wages will not be fortunes, the chance to work with someone of Rooney's reputation might be enough to lure players to Home Park that Argyle might not have previously been able to sign.

Rooney appointment a 'roll of the dice' for Pilgrims
Analysis - Brent Pilnick, BBC Sport, Plymouth

Rooney's appointment is one of the most famous days in Plymouth's long history - never before has such a high-profile figure in the game been associated with the club.

But it represents a real roll of the dice for the Pilgrims. While his pedigree as a player is undoubted, as a manager he has yet to hit the same heights that saw him win five Premier League titles, the Champions League and 120 England caps.

Argyle will hope they can get the Rooney that drew plaudits for his work keeping up a dysfunctional Derby, rather than the short time spent at St Andrew's this season.

The appointment is also a big call for Argyle's director of football Neil Dewsnip, who has appointed a second successive head coach from his file of personal contacts.

Dewsnip worked with a young Rooney while he was part of Everton's academy set-up, having previously worked with Ian Foster when the pair were at the Football Association.

Foster's appointment was almost disastrous for the club. It lasted less than three months and saw Argyle only stave off relegation on the final day of the season - at the expense of Birmingham, whose travails began under Rooney.

Posted by: themaclad - 23-05-2024, 18:26 - Forum: Barnsley - No Replies

Barnsley have appointed Cheltenham Town boss Darrell Clarke as their new head coach on a two-year deal with the option of a further year.

The 47-year-old has left the Robins to take up the position at Oakwell following Neill Collins' departure shortly before the end of the League One regular season.

Clarke links up with Martin Devaney, who recently signed a new deal as Barnsley's assistant head coach having guided them in the recent play-offs.

"I didn't need to be sold on the club. It's got huge potential and I'm excited to get myself going and get the squad rebuilt and try to push on for a promotion challenge," Clarke told the club website., external

"I'm proud to be managing this football club. I'm really looking forward to it."

Clarke's arrival in South Yorkshire comes after Barnsley agreed compensation with Cheltenham, where he had a year left on his contract.

Cheltenham said that they had offered Clarke an extended deal with improved terms, but he turned that down.

"We would like to thank Darrell for his contribution since arriving at the club back in September and wish him well in his future endeavours," a Cheltenham statement said.

Clarke could not quite guide the Robins to safety in League One, but he improved their results after his arrival, during a season in which the club failed to win or score in their opening 10 games.

He led the club to 42 points from his 36 games in charge as they missed out on safety by two points.

'I had the most immediate connection with Darrell'
Clarke arrives at Barnsley off the back of the Tykes' League One play-off semi-final defeat by Bolton Wanderers.

Despite their failure to reach Wembley, Barnsley won the second leg at Bolton.

Barnsley sporting director Mladen Sormaz said: "After a thorough search including meeting with a number of candidates in person in recent weeks, I had the most immediate connection with Darrell and appreciated how open and direct he was when we spoke.

"I felt that Darrell deserved the opportunity to come and test himself at a club which wants to push for promotion from League One.

"Darrell's personality, vision for the project and excitement for the challenge have set him apart from other candidates and I am sure our supporters will join me in welcoming him to the club."

Gareth Southgate is a nice bloke deep down, but don't look for too many nice blokes at the tops of podiums.

He has come up with 33 players and only really included one player who is anything like a goalkeeper, and he's a sandwich short of a picnic. We've got Burnley's second choice, Arsenal's reserve and the Palace No 2. We've got goalkeeping coaches on big bucks everywhere and there's no one able to combine athletic ability and the hand-eye co-ordination to catch a ball as a natural act alongside possessing sound judgement.

He's come up with Luke Shaw in defence who shouldn't be allowed out in those shorts and left out Fikayo Tomori and Eric Dier for leaving England in order to play the game with top clubs ..... But a mostly side-lined Chelsea defender makes it as does a very old-fashioned out-of-form Brighton defender.

He has wisely avoided picking a midfield, but looks likely to test Mainoo beyond breaking point.

Our hope is that we have far more potential goal scorers than any other team in the competition.
Palmer, Foden, Saka, Bellingham, Kane. How do we accommodate them all? I'd be for playing them. Saka, Kane and maybe Foden up front, then Palmer, Bellingham and Eze in behind them picking holes and scoring too. Grealish available on the bench. Rice as a defensive midfielder in front of the three fastest runners and best passers at the back ...... in front of our crazed, girly-legged keeper. Would we win it? Probably not, but we'd have fun.

Can nice Gareth win it? Not a hope!

if there are any questions about these rules then go ahead on this thread when the season starts, we will then clean up the thread and lock it up so it becomes the format we can go through quickly in the future  Thumb up

Posted by: themaclad - 20-05-2024, 08:07 - Forum: Braintree Town - Replies (1)

Braintree Town manager Angelo Harrop has agreed a new contract for next season following their promotion to the National League.

The Iron finished fifth in National League South but beat Worthing 4-3 after extra time in the play-off final.

The victory returned them to the top flight of non-league football for the first time since they were relegated under Danny Searle in 2019.

Former AFC Sudbury boss Harrop has been in charge at Cressing Road since 2022.

"Going to be a big challenge but one I look forward to embracing," he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

So the Arab Nation owned club, 100+ potential FFP charges against them supposedly, finally go one better than our first to "3 times in a row" honour. So are the Prima Donna League finally gonna lay the gloves on them that they've layed on Everton and Forest this season, or are they going to continue to be cowed by the fact that Citeh have a countries worth of finances to back up their legal team, let alone their football team?

I'm not saying they've bought it, but ...... they've bought it.

  Livingston v Hibs - Saturday 18 May
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 17-05-2024, 15:01 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (4)

There's a new found optimism amongst Hibs fans ahead of the last match of the season. As far as support is concerned, it should be like a home game for Hibs, who must have a good chance of getting another win under their belt.

All in all, most Hibees will be glad to see the end of this season, only notable because the number of late goals lost. Another welcome points haul will be a decent bonus to claim and perhaps be another feather in SDG's cap.
