Crawley Town v Huddersfield Town
Sky Bet League One
Saturday November 9th - 15:00 ko
at Broadfield Stadium

Huddersfield Town travel to Crawley in West Sussex to the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the first ever meeting between the two clubs. You wait thirteen years for a new opponent (Dover in 2011) and then you get two in a row with Crawley following on from last week's opponents, Tamworth. I suppose you could make a case for three in a row with the midweek game against Manchester United's under 21 side.

Talking of Tamworth. Are we really a team that can't defend a throw in? We've always had trouble defending corners, but a throw in? Huh

So how do we improve from last week? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please, cos I don't have a Scooby Doo! Hopefully Michael Duff will. I just hope we don't go on another spectacular losing run which followed our exit from the Carabooboo Cup. Surely not. Blush

Crawley on the other hand, were denied a money spinning replay against Maidenhead by the pathetic new FA Cup rules. They were a goal down in the 5th minute of injury time when Toby Mullarkey scored from a goalmouth scramble. A replay would have been just reward for the plucky League One side against the National League team, but instead they went and won the match in extra time with Tola Showunmi getting his first goal for the club. Their reward now will be a home tie with fellow League Oners, Lincoln City.

On Tuesday night they had a goal less draw away at Burton Albion, whilst Wycombe Wanderers were winning 5-0 at Stockport County to go top of the league. Wasn't expecting that. And we travel down to play them next week. Unless we manage to get it postponed by getting another player called up for an international game. At the moment we only have two in Brodie Spencer and Callum Marshall, the Northern Ireland lads.

Tickets: We have been allocated 1,345 for this fixture, with 145 tickets located in the East Stand seating and 1,200 tickets loacted in the terraced KR-L Stand.

Pay on the Day will be permitted on Saturday afternoon from two outlets. Crawley Town’s Ticket Office is able to take both cash and card payments.

Tickets for this fixture are priced as follows:

PRICES – THE EAST STAND (SEATING)

Adults (21 and over) - £20
Concessions (60s and over/Students with ID) - £15
Young Adults (17–20-year-olds) - £8
Young Person (14–16-year-olds) - £7

PRICES – THE KR-L STAND (TERRACING)

Adults (21 and over) - £18
Concessions (60s and over/Students with ID) - £13
Young Adults (17–20-year-olds) - £8
Young Person (14–16-year-olds) - £7

Children under the age of 14 can enter the stadium to watch the game free of charge, but they must be attending the game with a paying adult.

Official coach travel will be available for this fixture, priced at £35 per-person. Departure will be from our St Andrew’s Road Car Park at 7.30am.

A brief history of Crawley Town: formed in 1896 as Crawley FC, it only took them 115 years to get into the Football League. They played around in different non leagues until they were disbanded in 1935. It didn't take long for them to be re-established and came back in 1938 in the Brighton & Hove District League. They became Crawley Town in 1958 and then joined the Southern League in 1962. They won the Southern League in 2003/04, which took them into the Football Conference (now known as the National League).

Their players were still playing as part timers, but after a 12th placed finish in their first season in the Conference, they decided to go full time. That wasn't a great move as the team struggled on the pitch, attendances and finances dropped, meaning that they over spent their budget, which brought points deductions and eventually administration.

The financial troubles continued for a long time, till 2010, but despite all the points deductions, they never got relegated and so by the time it was all sorted out, new manager Steve Evans and his assistant, former Town player Paul Raynor had money to spend on rebuilding a team ready for a push for promotion.

The rebuild went well. So well that they reached the 5th round of the FA Cup, losing narrowly by a goal to nil against Man Utd at Old Trafford.

They eventually won promotion to the League Two in 2011, but this was achieved just days after the death of Bruce Winfield, the club owner who had saved them and sadly never got to see the team play in the Football League.

Their first season in the big time got off to a great start and they were top of League Two at the turn of the year. Another FA Cup run to the 5th round, where they lost 2-0 at home to Premier League side Stoke City, messed up their league form, but they did hang on to an automatic spot, finishing 3rd behind the Towns of Swindon and Shrewsbury. I wonder if that was the first time three Towns have been promoted together. No I'm not having a look. Whistle

Evans and Raynor had both left for Rotherham before promotion was secured though, so it was Craig Brewster who saw the job through. He didn't get the job full time though as Sean O'Driscoll was appointed in May, but left to take over at Nottingham Forest before taking charge of a single Crawley game.

Crawley had three seasons at this 3rd tier level before going back to League Two in 2015. In that time they had Richie Barker, John Gregory and Dean Saunders all in the managerial hot seat.

Mark Yates took over for the first season back in the 4th tier, but was sacked by the new owner just before the end of the season when mid table obscurity was deemed to be a failure. Former Chelsea Academy coach, Dermot Drummy (pictured below) was appointed in his place.

He was sacked after another failed promotion bid and tragically committed suicide six months later.

They had a few more shambolic seasons and crazy appointments, one of them being Harry Kewell, but it was under the leadership of John Yems that the club had their best ever result when they beat the Champions of Europe, L***s United 3-0 in the FA Cup. Laugh Laugh Laugh

Yems however, was sacked and banned from football shortly after when he was found guilty of racist abuse to some of his players.

The 2022/23 season saw them narrowly avoid relegation to the National League, so they were favourites to go down at the start of 23/24. However, with Scott Lindsey in charge, they finished 7th and reached the Play Offs for the first time. Incredibly, they beat MK Dons by a Play Off record aggregate score of 8-1 to reach Wembley where they would face Crewe Alexandra.

Goals from Danilo Orsi and little Liam Kelly gave the Red Devils a 2-0 win and promotion back to League One.

Early into this season though, Lindsey left to go manage MK Dons and his place was taken by Rob Elliot, the ex Charlton and Newcastle goalkeeper.

Crawley in popular culture:

Goth rock band The Cure, led by Robert Smith, were formed in Crawley in 1976 by a group of friends at Notre Dame Middle School in the town. They went on to have a string of hits in the 1980s and 90s, most notably The Lovecats in 1983 and Friday I'm in Love in 1992.

They have been active now for 48 years and last week released their latest album Songs of a Lost World, which includes the new single Alone. It is their first studio album for 16 years and have recently done a live session for Radio 2, which was also broadcast on BBC2 on Saturday night.

Here's that new single on YouTube. Whaddya fink?

Stags, Terriers and All Mascots on Alert

When the Terriers play the Stags it could be a bloodbath. Small dogs and innocent fawns will no doubt shaking across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire if this catches on ........

A pig's head was thrown on to the pitch during a game between Sao Paulo rivals Corinthians and Palmeiras in the Brazilian championship.

The incident occurred as Palmeiras prepared to take a corner in the first half and Corinthians forward Yuri Alberto ran from the penalty box to kick it off the pitch before play continued.

Alberto went on to score as Corinthians won the game 2-0.

"I almost broke my foot, I thought it was a cushion, I went to take it off with my foot, I kind of kicked it. It was a pig's head, I almost hurt my foot," Alberto told O Globo's SporTV., external

"A new one on me - the big traditional Sao Paulo derby, Corinthians v Palmeiras and someone has thrown a pig's head on the the field (the symbol of Palmeiras is a pig)," South American football correspondent Tim Vickery posted on X. The situation was reminiscent of when Barcelona fans threw a pig's head on to the pitch when their former midfielder Luis Figo returned to the Nou Camp playing for arch-rivals Real Madrid in 2002.

Globo and ESPN Brazil, external reported that police are investigating and two fans were arrested following the incident, before being released.

Palmeiras fans adopted the pig as their mascot in 1986.

In a match against Santos they heard rival fans chanting "pig" and responded by shouting "And go for it Pig! Ole Ole Ole".

A few days later sports magazine Placar published a picture of Palmeiras player Jorginho Putinatti holding a pig in his arms.

BIT OF PREVIOUS

Second visit of the season for the Black Cats probably be a slightly different side from the first one.

THE BOSS

Paul Heckingbottom isn’t surprised by what Sunderland have managed to do so far this season, based on spells they’ve enjoyed in previous campaigns.

North End will take on the Black Cats at Deepdale on Wednesday night, and they’ll arrive in Lancashire occupying the division’s top spot.

It’s been an impressive start to life under new head coach Régis Le Bris, but Hecky’s seen enough signs from the team over the past few years to not be shocked at what they’ve done up to this point.

Hecky said: “I’m not too surprised because over the last three or four seasons they've had spells where their form's been right up there with the best.

“I think their challenge, like any team who is trying to get promoted or trying to be at the top, is sustaining that over 46 games.

“They've had patches and runs of form throughout the last few seasons where they've been in promotion form. Their job now is to try and maintain it.

“They have good attacking quality and are a really youthful side. They’re fearless in how they look to attack with a lot of energy, and then they use that energy on good recoveries and how they look to defend the ball.

“I think that's probably a big improvement in my eyes in the Sunderland team this season. I think against the ball they've been a lot better and stronger than I've seen over previous seasons.”

PNE will be hoping to get back to winning ways, having lost in their last outing on home turf against Bristol City.

Sam Greenwood scored his third goal in as many games to draw his side level in that one following a controversial opener for the visitors, but the Robins quickly regained their advantage and took all three points.

Hecky said: “The biggest thing looking back on the game for me was when we made the attacking changes and brought the attacking personnel on and changed shape, we actually became less dangerous in terms of getting bodies in their box.

“That's something we have to be wary of and try and improve on because we've not been in that position this season really. Millwall away is the only time and the subs we made were different.

“From my mind, making the changes from the bench is important but then the players need to understand that when they go on. It's okay having the ball, but we have to go and try and get the goal and make sure that when we do get in the final third and dangerous areas that we're making them defend the spaces a lot better by getting bodies in there.”

The gaffer also confirmed that while Will Keane is making good progress, he won’t be risked for this match or the trip to Portsmouth at the weekend.

Training days will be used to get him up to speed during the international break, while Patrick Bauer has been able to get involved with some ball work, but he’s some way off being able to take part in any kind of contact training.

SUNDERLAND NEWS

Sunderland are looking to extend their six-match unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship when they head to Deepdale to face Preston North End.

The Lads head their for the second time this season after a cup clash earlier in the campaign looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game...

Opposition

The Lilywhites currently sit 20th in the Sky Bet Championship table after three wins from their opening 12 games this season.

Paul Heckingbottom took charge in August after Ryan Lowe brought an end to his two-and-a-half year spell on Lancashire. The Yorkshireman has presided over a ten-game spell where they’ve suffered defeat just twice.

All three of their victories in the league this season have come at Deepdale beating Luton Town, Coventry City and Watford.

Former Sunderland academy graduate stands out as the club’s top scorer this season with three goals to his name. Emil Riis and Kaine Kesler Hayden have two assists each.

Pre-match Insights

The two sides met earlier in the season in the first round of the Carabao Cup as the Lilywhites were 2-0 winners.

Sunderland have won two of their previous three meetings against Preston North End in the league. Last time out, Alex Pritchard and Nazariy Rusyn were on the scoresheet in a New Years’ Day victory this year.

The Lads sealed a Championship Play-Off spot on the final day of the 2022/23 season down in Deepdale with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Pritchard, Amad and Jack Clarke.

Preston North End are unbeaten in 21 league games in midweek. Only Manchester City currently have a better record in the top four English leagues.

Sunderland have won both of their midweek league games this season beating Derby County and Luton Town.

Team News

Jobe misses the first game of his three-match suspension following his red card in the goalless draw with Queens Park Rangers.

Anthony Patterson continues to make progress in his recovery from injury but the head coach confirmed Preston North End may come too soon for the goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Dan Ballard will be assessed ahead of the game.

Ian Poveda, Aji Alese, Jenson Seelt, Ahmed Abdullahi, Salis Abdul Samed and Niall Huggins continue on their respective rehabilitation programmes.

Amelia 18
Minizin 8
Twerton 8
Themaclad 4
Zinman 3
A.A.A. 2

One of those weeks where we see one player completely dominate the rest!! This week truly belongs to Amelia who scored her personal high score of the season so far with 18 points!! She scored on 7 of the 10 games, picked up points on all her balls and added a CS to the list as well, a great all round performance from her!!

Her dominance saw a double digit score drop to joint second place where we find Minizin and Twerton with 8 points. They essentaill got theire the same was, both missed on the Gamball but both got a max on the Bonus. Themaclad is 4th with just 4 points, his lowest score of the season, he missed on all his balls but did at least manage one CS.

Zinman posted the lowest score of the week with just 3 points but doesn't finish last due to AAA not posting any predictions this week.

105 Themaclad
78 Minizin
76 Twerton
73 Amelia
71 Zinman
68 A.A.A.

Themaclad's lead slipped a little further this week, now down to 27 points above Minizin with Twerton a further 2 points back. After that, Amelia's great week saw her climb 2 places into a season high 4th spot, just 3 points off Twerton in 3rd, dropping Zinman down to 5th and AAA to the wooden spoon spot. Just 10 points separate 2nd to 6th and Amelia showed that a well placed good week can wipe that gap out in one fell swoop!!!

Some Stats for Group A
41 - Most Points from Balls - Themaclad
-2 - Least Points from Balls - AAA
Themaclad has 18 points on the Gamball, down to -5 for Minizin
Themaclad has 18 points on the Bonus down to -12 for Amelia

Games predicted so far - 600 total
30% have seen points scored on them (202)
8% have seen a Correct Score prediction

Group B

LadyJane 16
Stairs 10
Snooty 9
Derby 6
BBB 3
BaggieOne -1
SCO -2

Another tough week which saw just 3 correct scores and 2 minus men. Surprisingly nobody scored a maximum on he gamball (SCO has been a bit quiet this week) though, unlike last week, we did get some positive bonus balls.

Predictably, Lady Jane sits on top of the table, repeating her 16 point score from last week. That's the 4th time she's headed the table and has only failed to reach double figures twice. Yet again she scored on the gamball, one of her 5 correct predictions, and completed another full set of balls. Stairs was the other positive gamball player and takes 2nd place just creeping into double figures. Snooty was held back by his failure to turn any of his correct predictions into a maximum - this is turning into something of a habit as he only has 6 correct scores all season, the lowest figure in Group B.

Derby gained the only other corrct score but blew all his balls to total just 6 points but that was enough to secure a mid-table position. BBB only got one prediction right but was saved by the fact it was his bonus. BaggieOne ans SCO also scored on just 1 game but were in their cases it wasn't a ball choice. B1 did at least get a scoreball point leaving SCO adrift at the bottom - not a week to remeber for him!

125 Lady Jane
91 Derby
73 Stairs
70 Snooty
69 BBB
65 BaggieOne
62 SCO

It's getting to the stage when Lady Jane can take a few weeks off! Her lead increased to 34 points over Derby and 52 points ahead of 3rd place. I know it's still relatively early but she's looking a shoe-in for the play-offs. Derby also has a healthy gap over the rest who are just separated by 11 points. Satirs and Snooty both climbed 3 places with BaggieOne, BBB and SCO heading in the opposite direction. Interestingly Lady Jane has more than double the number of points as SCO!

To match SCO's stats:

Most points from the balls - 49 Lady Jane (not exactly surprising!)
Least ball points - zero, SCO.

Gamball points vary from 41 (LJ) to zero (Snooty and BBB)
Only Snooty ahs a positive bonus score with 9 points. 3 players (Derby, LJ and BBB) are at zero with BaggieOne trailing with a total of minus 12. After scoring on his first 4 bonuses, Derby has now missed out for the last 6 weeks - must be that cold Scottish air!

229 games have produced correct predictions (38%) with just 68 correct scores (11%).

Posted by: themaclad - 04-11-2024, 18:53 - Forum: Shrewsbury Town - No Replies

Shrewsbury Town have sacked head coach Paul Hurst after nine months in charge.

Hurst was in his second spell at the League One club but has been dismissed after a run of just one win in their past 12 games in all competitions, culminating in Saturday's FA Cup defeat by League Two Salford City.

The 50-year-old leaves Shrewsbury second from bottom of League One having lost their past three EFL games without scoring a goal.

Hurst was re-appointed as manager in January 2024 having previously led the club to the League One play-off final in 2018 where they were beaten by Rotherham United and an EFL Trophy final which they lost to Lincoln.

"It is with regret that Shrewsbury Town can confirm we have parted company with head coach Paul Hurst and assistant boss Chris Doig," Shrewsbury announced in a club statement., external

The decision came after an emergency board meeting held by the club on Sunday morning, during which chairman Roland Wycherley offered his resignation.

"This morning, at our emergency Board meeting, I offered my immediate resignation as chairman," he said in a later statement, external.

"This was rejected by the board as despite all the positive changes we are making to reduce the losses - without my current financial support - we would not be able to continue to fulfil our commitments."

Hurst initially kept Shrewsbury clear of relegation from League One last season as they finished four points above the drop zone.

But this season the Shropshire club have managed just two league victories and lost 14 of their 19 matches in all competitions.

Shrewsbury's next League One match is away at rock bottom Burton Albion on Saturday:

Shrewsbury Town’s patience with head coach Paul Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig finally ran out after the FA Cup defeat at Salford.

An emergency board meeting was held on Sunday morning and that is when the decision was made to part company with the duo.

It would have been an agonising decision for chairman Roland Wycherley who is very close to Hurst and brought him back to the club after his previous stint in the 2017-18 season led Town to the League One play-off final, losing out to Rotherham United.

His second spell at Shrewsbury did not fare as well, albeit in very different circumstances.

Hurst was working under director of football Micky Moore, not as a stand-alone manager in his own right.

There is no doubting Hurst’s credentials and the fans will long remember the halcyon days under his stewardship.

Unfortunately, the old adage ‘never go back’ seems true in this instance.

LAST MATCH

We went down to our worst defeat in years as Watford hit us for SIX!! I thought we were slightly the better team in the first half and went in level at the break. Watford took the lead when Porteus scored from close range, but Smith levelled soon after. But it all went downhill in the 2nd half once Watford took the lead with back to back penalties (both pens imo). Watford quickly made it 4-1, before Valentin pulled one back. Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dismissed as Watford scored 2 more as the game finished 2-6.

THE MATCH

Next up Norwich make the journey north. The Canaries have made an OK start to the season and currently lie in 10th place. They have probably drawn too many games so far, 6 out of 13. If they can turn some of those draws into wins, they should have a shout at the playoffs come the end of the season. They are managed by Johannes Hoff Thorup who took charge in the summer. There leading scorer is Borja Sainz with 11 goals and 2 assists.

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. However, if you do predict a draw and it's a match that won't be going to a replay, you can get a possible extra point by stating which of the two teams you think will eventually win.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the Twixtmas fixtures and the NYD fixtures.

The second season will start the following week, which is usually the FA Cup 3rd round, finishing on the last game of the League One season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of League One fixtures and bonus matches, hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The random badger is restricted to three goal scorers in any of the fixtures in your group.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

Postponed matches will only count if the match is re-played before the next Matchday is under way. Abandoned matches will be awarded half the points for the score at the time of abandonment, so 1 point if you have the correct result, 2 points if you have the correct score.

Substitute Badger or scorer in one of the Town games:- These will be only be allowed if you change them before the match involved has kicked off.

Hibs v Dundee United - Sunday 3 November
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 02-11-2024, 00:49 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (6)

With the games coming thick and fast this week, Hibs have a chance to redeem themselves after the collapse 2 weeks ago at Tannadice. We all know what needs to be done, but are we going to see it happen? Or will we be so weak as to invite the opposition to have a go at us in the last 15 minutes once again?

Two draws in the last two games is a slight improvement, but it's still not good enough to get us up the table. United will be a difficult team to beat and I fancy yet another draw this weekend.
