Celtic 3 Hertz 1 - The Hoops "top the league" again!
Posted by: 0762 - 25-08-2019, 20:24 - Forum: Celtic - Replies (1)

This result was never in doubt TBH and, at one point, it was threatening to be a 5-0 or 6-0 thrashing until the Bhoys "took their feet off the gas" towards the end of the game. Hertz fortunate that Lenny didn't field his main strikers (looking towards a bigger game next week in Stockholm!). So Bayo, although not too impressive up front, still helped to dump Hertz and Levein to 2nd bottom of the Premiership by one goal on the GD stat!! The MOTM was probably Christopher Ajer, the "Norwegian Cafu", who had a free role at driving forward on Hertz back line and did quite well on the Hoops' right flank.

Blame it on Brexit, the Boogey, anything you like, but not the manager.
Posted by: Dancingwilldoit - 24-08-2019, 20:27 - Forum: Chesterfield - Replies (5)

Why not? You cant blame John Sheridan for starting a centre back at RB, a left back in midfield and his precious son at left back, Robbie Mr Backwards Weir as our midfield general can you. After all it was a hot day and maybe with a hangover and feeling a bit giddy it looked good on paper. I just hope to god you didn't travel for that one SGB. The team selection and formation spelled one thing - a recipe for disaster

Lets start with the first half. To say we were absolute total shite would be a huge understatement. Shezz junior was so out of his depth he couldnt see over the turf. I'm not one to slag off players when its 100% justified as you know, but he was just plain garbage. That brilliant centre back we signed from Carlisle called a "lump of lard" is outstanding at being gobby and telling everybody else what they should be doing but in all honesty a lump of lard is a whole lot more useful. It was hot out there today and at least a lump of lard would have "run". He really is crap and wants ditching asap.
So, to the game. We should have gone in 0-5 at half time with many around me saying it was the worst ever half of football they had seen in 30-40-50 years. Last minute we were awarded one the dodgiest pens I have ever seen but would have taken anything by that stage and went in 1-2. It was dire. The only bright spot was a beautiful strike by Bradley Barry that had most of the East Stand applauding. Pity he doesnt play for us any more.

Second half JS saw sense and took his lad off with Gerrard following PDQ. Guess what, everybody dropped into their natural positions and we actually looked balanced for the first time. It still wasnt pretty to watch but at least we had a few things to shout about - especially the ref. JS still tried to pull a rabbit out of the hat by playing our top scorer Boden on the wing. The Rabbit was dead though so I hope we dont see that again.

What I really dont understand is what has happened to Wedgbury. When he has played he looked good. He was out today warming up with the rest of the squad but wasnt even on the team sheet. 6 games without a win is not the time to start tinkering with the team and where players play. The fact you have an unbalanced squad is solely down to your recruitment in summer Mr Sheridan. McKay was on the bench - why FFS. Where are our youngsters?
At least Maguire is available for Mondays trip up the road but knowing JS he will be in goal.

My worst nightmares are coming true. We should never have let him set his feet near our club again. People remember the promotion but forget the crap that followed it. Here we go again.

Hibs v St Johnstone, Sat 24 August, KO 3.00pm
Posted by: 0762 - 23-08-2019, 23:36 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (4)

This is a welcome home fixture for Hibs v a "misfiring" Saints' team but I'd still cautiously comment that we don't know what Hibs team is gonna show up during this match. I wanna see Hibs looking like a fitter and defensively tight side compared with previous matches although I must admit I'm not sure re Hecky's capabilities as a manager.

Rangers formal statement referring to a MINORITY of their support at Ibronx v Saint Josephs????? This is utter bullshit and no way this was just a minority of their toxic fans offending in this way and any impartial observer at this match would confirm that fact!!   Derby vs WBA - Match Thread

Courtesy of Kenneth Zohore's first Albion goal on Wednesday night, Albion remain one of four sides in the Championship unbeaten in the league, and our current position of 6th is probably a fair reflection of the performances so far. The desire to play good football and break with pace is there, but at times the passing game isn't quite gelling with the confidence and fluency we'd like. There are chances being regularly created, but chances don't turn into goals by themselves, and at least one of our strikers needs to play himself into a bit of form. Defensively it's the occasional lapse or decision to stand off the opposition that's allowing free headers in the box and free shots outside it, with the result being no clean sheets in any competitive game thus far. These are all things for Bilic to work on in the months ahead, but in the meantime, we've got a real barometer of our progress so far and our chances for the season ahead with a visit to Pride Park in Saturday's early game.

In their post-Lampard malaise, Derby haven't been particularly quick out of the blocks this season, but Philip Cocu is still acclimatising himself to the English game, and with two resounding defeats against the Rams last year, Albion have to be wary. The likes of Lawrence, Waghorn and Marriott are still on hand to cause us problems, and if we decide that it's Zonal Marking Awareness Week at set-pieces then we could be in for a long afternoon.

However, it's been two wins from two for the Baggies on the road so far, and hopefully we can continue that form. A draw would be a good return considering last season's encounters, and anything better would be a real statement of intent for the campaign to come.

Huddersfield Town v Reading
The Sky Bet Championship
Saturday August 24th - 3:00 ko
at The John Smith's Stadium

[Image: leeds-road-huddersfield-eaw613639-2990605.jpg.webp]

Huddersfield Town welcome Reading to the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday for our first home Saturday afternoon match of the season. It'll be the first meeting with them since Wembley, where we of course beat them in a penalty shoot out.
Mark Hudson is expected to still be in charge as there are no signs of us appointing a new full time manager.

A brief history of Reading: All their best seasons have been recent, since the takeover by John Madejski in 1991. Before then they were mostly a lower league side, flirting occasionally with the 2nd division (what we now call the Championship). It was in one of those seasons in the relative big time that they won their first major trophy, the Simod Cup in 1988, beating Luton Town at Wembley. They did get relegated though shortly after.
Then Madejski took over, moved the club out of Elm Park, their home since 1896, and moved them into the stadium they have now, named after himself of course. That was in 1998 and soon they were to be promoted again. They finished runners up in 2003, a couple of years after losing to Walsall in the Play Off final. They made an immediate impact in the Championship, reaching the Play Offs, where they got beat by Wolves at the semi final stage.
Not to be deterred though, they won the 2005–06 Championship with a league record 106 points, scoring 99 goals and losing only twice. For the first time in their history, they were now in the top flight of English football. They defied the odds that first season by finishing a creditable 8th, but were relegated again the following season.
They spent their time in the Championship at the top end, reaching the Play Offs the next two years, but being beaten by Burnley and then Swansea. In 2012 however, they won the title to return to the Premier League.
It didn't last and they were straight back down again. They almost made it back again, late in May in Twenty Seventeen, but lost at Wembley on penalties.

Head to Head
Reading lead the overall head to head by 24 wins to 15, with 12 draws.

There was a match between the two clubs at Wembley a couple of years ago. Finished 0-0 after extra time. That came after the two league games had been won 1-0 by the home teams, Phillip Billing scoring for us at the JSS. The previous season had seen loads of goals in the two league games and two FA Cup games we played each other. Reading won the aggregate then 10-9.

We pumped them 6-1 and 4-1 at Leeds Road back in the Mick Buxton era and that wasn't long after we only played them for the very first time back in the 70s. That was in Division 4 in 1975/76 and the home team won both games again. 2-0 to Reading at Elm Park and then Bob Newton and Terry Gray (2) scoring for us in a 3-0 win at home.

So what's happening at the Madejski? Managed now by José Manuel Gomes, a 48 year old Portuguese lad in his 17th managerial position, who's only honour on his Wikipedia page is the 2016 Saudi Super Cup.

Who have Reading got? Well they have some of the best known names in the history of football in Pelé and Pușcaș. This Pelé though is a midfielder on loan from Monoco and the boy Pușcaș is George Pușcaș, a Romanian striker who has just arrived this month but has already scored twice against Cardiff last weekend and against Wycombe in the League Cup.

Club connections:

Oliver Norwood played for Town and Reading. He now plays in the Premier league for Sheffield Utd.

[Image: Oliver+Norwood+Reading+v+Rotherham+Unite...ADpJvl.jpg]

Benik Afobe: played on loan with us and then had three games on loan at Reading, in what now seems an eternity ago.

Simon Church: came on loan to us from Reading and was pisch.

David Cowling: is a proper Town legend, being a member of the famous Mick Buxton squad, scoring the goal that beat Leeds in the League Cup and the goal against Newport County that secured promotion, before having a short stint as a Reading player in 1988.

Steve Francis: joined Reading from Chelsea in 1987 and 270 matches later came to Town where he played 186 times, one of which was at Wembley in the 1995 Play Off victory over Bristol Rovers.

Craig Maskell: was a prolific goalscorer for Town in the 1980s before leaving to join Reading in 1990 where the prolificness continued.

Sean Morrison: came on loan from the then Premier League club Reading in 2012 and helped us beat Sheffield Utd at Wembley in a famous penalty shoot out.

Danny Williams played against us for Reading in the Play Off Final, so we signed him afterwards when we were a Premier League club. Was allowed to leave at the end of last season after being injured for most of it.

Billy Price: could've been the greatest goalscorer in Town history if not for the intervention of the 2nd World War. He scored Town's last league goal before the outbreak of hostilities and the abandonment of professional football competitions. That was the winner in a 2-1 win over Sunderland at Roker Park. Over the next few years, the FA set up regional wartime leagues to keep moral up on the home front and in this time Billy Price notched an amazing 179 goals in the bright blue and white of Huddersfield Town. The quality of the opposition at times may have been a bit ordinary, we had an 11-0 win over Rochdale in 1941 in which he scored a hat trick, but had he been playing under normal circumstances, who knows how many goals he could've notched as a Town player?
His official total is 31 goals in 60 appearances at either end of the war, stretched over a ten year Town career. He then transferred to Reading in 1947 at the age of 30 with his best years behind him.

The most famous one though would be Phil Parkinson: assistant manager to Alan Pardew at Charlton in April 2007 he decided to come and sign for Ken Davy as the new manager of Huddersfield Town. His managerial career at the MacAlpharm Stadium was completely unblemished, not losing one single match in his spell in charge of the club. Unfortunately for Town, the lure of the Premier League and the desire to help Charlton drop to league One, was too much for him and he returned to the Valley.
He then took a break from football by accepting employment with Bradford City.
In his playing days though, Parkinson was a genuine Reading legend. Player of the Season twice in the 1990s, he captained them to two promotions, clocked up over 300 appearances and was voted by the fans into their best ever XI.
He will, of course, be always remembered fondly in these parts though as Phil "the chair" Parkinson.

[Image: andrew-watson-and-ken-davy-flank-phil-pa...355403.jpg]

Any more? Brian McDermott started his career at Arsenal and then Oxford Utd when they were in the top flight. He then came on loan to us in 1986, playing 4 matches and scoring once in a defeat at Valley Parade. He later managed Reading in the Premier League before giving up on life and becoming the Leeds manager in 2013.

Match Officials: Sheffield Wednesday Home

The match official for Saturday’s clash with Lee Bullen’s Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale is Robert Jones.
The referee, from Merseyside, is in his fourth season on the EFL lists. He has officiated four North End games during his career the last being the April home game against Leeds United, when Ben Pearson saw red.

His first visit to PR1 was the 1-1 draw against Rotherham in April 2017 and, prior to the Leeds game, he most recently he refereed the Lilywhites’ 2-1 victory away against QPR in April 2018.
The 33-year-old’s other game at Deepdale saw him send off PNE midfielder John Welsh for two bookable offences during the 1-1 draw against Wolves in February 2018.
He has already officiated three games this season, beginning with Bristol City’s home win over QPR and most recently Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. In those games he has issued four yellow cards in each match.

The assistants for the day’s game will be Daniel Leach and Andrew Fox while Aaron Jackson is the fourth official.

Wendies arrive having had a decent start to the season even without a permanent manager after Steve the Cabbage Bruce departed to Noocastle, having survived a transfer ban by selling their ground to themselves canny move in itself they appear to be on an upward curve. Now the second biggest side in Sheffield following the Blunts promotion there is pressure on from the fans to achieve the same probably the worst thing they can do is appoint Lee Bullen as a permanent boss, if they do watch their form go west.
They have made sone good signings over the summer Luongo, Borner, Jacob Murphy and Harris.
Should be a decent game although we have Mr Jones as official. The meetings between the two have been littered with red cards over the past feaw seasons although the two we got for fighting each other were probably the strangest of them all.
Expect a full away end.

The Lotus Accumulator - Week 3 - AVA GO
Posted by: Devongone - 22-08-2019, 17:58 - Forum: Football related - Replies (6)

With 5,047 points the top possible weekly score only one player has reached double figures after two weeks. And it is not as if the predictions are that hard.

NEW PLAYERS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO JOIN. IT IS FREE.

You simply list your predictions in order in reply to this. And I've promised to give £1 MYSELF to our crowdfund for every player who joins. So far even my Derbyshire short arms and deep pockets aren't under threat.

The allocation of points is explained in Week One of these posts.

Prediction One - Name a team that will win AT HOME.
Prediction Two – Name a team that will win AWAY.
Prediction Three – Name a team to win AT HOME by TWO clear goals.
Prediction Four – Name a team that will be involved in a GOALLESS DRAW.
Prediction Five – Name a player who will score a goal.
Prediction Six – Name a team that wins by exactly THREE clear goals.
Prediction Seven – Name a team that concedes FOUR goals or more.

By the way last week I stretched the rules by allowing Scottish League Cup matches to count ....... but with the best effort 5,040 short of the target I neglected to go to VAR or David Elleray for a ruling.
