Norwich v 'Udders at Carrow Road
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 15-08-2022, 08:36 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (25)

Norwich City v Huddersfield Town
The Sky Bet Championship
Tuesday August 16th - 19:45 ko
at Carrow Road

Huddersfield Town travel to Norwich to Carrow Road on Tuesday evening with the smell of revenge in their nostrils. Our last visit there ended in a humiliating 7-0 defeat, but now under the superb management of Danny Schofield, the Terriers have the chance to get one over on the calamitous Canaries.

Town lie in mid table, whilst Norwich are rock bottom, a position they've become used to in recent times. Danny and his boys, buoyed by a terrific triumph on Saturday when Yuta Nakayama opened the scoring against Stokyo City, will be full of confidence. Norwich will be full of flatulence after blowing off in Hull.

We will be without long term injured Matty Pearson, short term injured David Kasumu and forever blummin' injured Rolando Aarons, who's brother will be in the Norwich line up. And Tino Anjorin looked in pain as he came back out of the tunnell, limping, at full time. He may have just been annoyed at missing the victory wave though. Tongue

Tickets: Pay on the Day WILL NOT be available

Over-65s - £15
Under-21s - £15
Under-18s - £10

Tickets on our official coaches will be priced at £32 per person, with coaches departing at 1pm from the St Andrew's Road car park on match day.

A brief history of Norwich City: formed in 1902, they started playing at Newmarket Road but moved to The Nest in 1908, an old disused chalk pit. The club's chairman was a keen breeder of canaries and so he changed the club colours to the familiar yellow and green they have today and the nickname stuck. They went into liquidation during the First World War but reformed in 1919 and were then admitted to the league when it was extended in 1920 and they became members of the new Division Three (South).

The Nest

They won promotion to Division Two as champions in 1934. The FA were concerned about The Nest's unsuitability to hold large crowds and so they moved to a new stadium, the one they still play in at Carrow Road. It didn't herald success though and at the end of the season before the Second World War, they were relegated. They stayed in that league after the war and in 1956/57 finished bottom of the league. Fortunately they improved in the next one as the two Division Threes were nationalised into Div 3 and 4 and having finished in the top half, the Canaries were placed in the new Division 3.

This did herald a new era of success and in 1959 they reached the FA Cup semi finals as a 3rd division club. They beat Ilford and Swindon Town in the early rounds, then went on to beat Manchester United at Carrow Road in round 3. Goals from Terry Bly (2) and Errol Crossan gave them a famous 3-0 win over Busby's world famous team. They then beat Cardiff City which gave them a 5th round tie with Spurs. After a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, a Bly goal gave them a 1-0 win in the replay and the Canaries were in the quarter finals. Another replay was needed to see off Sheffield Utd and then they played Luton in the semis. It was back to White Hart Lane for this match, which again ended in a 1-1 draw, before the cup run came to an end at St Andrews where Luton triumphed 1-0.

The following season they got promoted to Div 2, finishing runners up behind Southampton. Club record appearance holder, Ron Ashman, skippered the Canaries through all this and then in 1962 led the club to their first trophy. This was the League Cup, in it's second season of existence, and they triumphed 4-0 on aggregate over 4th division Rochdale. The job was almost completed in the first leg as they won 3-0 at Spotland with goals from Derek Lythgoe (2) and Bill Punton, then a goal from Jimmy Hill (no not that one) finished the Dale off at Carrow Road. Ashman then took over the manager's job, with a total of 662 games behind him but couldn't get them up to the First Division.

They didn't have to wait that long though. Under the management of Ron Saunders, they won the 2nd division in 1972 and took our place at the top table as we got relegated. Whilst up there they reached the League Cup Final again, losing this time in their first visit to Wembley, beaten 1-0 by Spurs. Saunders left to manage Aston Villa and the Canaries were relegated. But they came straight back up again, finishing third behind Man Utd and Saunders' Villa team. And it was Saunders who would thwart his old club again in the next season as the Canaries reached the League Cup Final again and lost 0-1 again, with Ray Graydon scoring to give Villa the cup.

John Bond had been the manager for all this and when he left to go manage Man City, the Canaries were relegated in 1980. They came back up again in 1982, finishing 3rd behind Luton and Watford. Ken Brown was now the manager and in 1985 he guided them once more to the League Cup Final. This time they won it. After beating Preston, Aldershot, Notts County and Grimsby, they came up against their arch rivals Ipswich Town in a 2 legged semi final. They lost the first leg 0-1 at Portman Road but then the future Town management duo, John Deehan and Steve Bruce, gave them the victory at Carrow Road and they were off to Wembley again. They won it 1-0 against Sunderland, with the unfortunate Gordon Chisholm putting the ball into his own net.

Even more unfortunately, both Norwich and Sunderland were relegated at the end of the season, the Canaries becoming the first team to win a major trophy and get relegated in the same season. More bad luck as well meant they couldn't play in Europe for their League Cup win as the country had been banned from playing in the European competitions after the Heysel disaster.

They won the 2nd division title in 1986 to get back into the top flight and were still there when the First Division was re-branded as the Premier League in 1992. And they almost won that first Premier League, with future Town manager Mark Robins top scoring, but faded towards the end after being top for quite a while. Their fate was sealed with a 1-3 defeat at Portman Road and eventually finished 3rd behind Man U and Villa. Still it was their highest ever finish and this time they were allowed into the UEFA Cup.

They had a famous win in the 2nd round, becoming the first English team to win away at Bayern Munich. Jeremy Goss and Mark Bowen gave them a 2-1 win and then Goss scored again in the 2nd leg 1-1 draw to give them the aggregate victory. They then came up against Inter Milan, who won both legs 1-0, with Denis Bergkamp on target for both goals.

All this was with Mike Walker in the manager's hot seat, but when he left to take the Everton job, things started to go downhill. John Deehan took over but couldn't stop the slide and at the end of the 1994/95 season, they went down. And they stayed down.

Nine years they stayed in division 2, almost going down to division 3, but rallying to reach the Play Offs for the first time in 2002. They drew against Birmingham City at the Millennium Stadium but lost on penalties. It spurred them on to greater things though and they won the title in 2004, finishing 8 points ahead of West Brom. But success didn't last and they came straight back down.

They had four years in what by now was called The Championship, but when they left it was in a downward direction, to League One. And what a terrible start to League One life they had, losing 1-7 at home to Colchester United. Manager Bryan Gunn was sacked and replaced with the man who had just got him sacked, Colchester's Paul Lambert. It was a good appointment for the Canaries as he led them to the title and then straight through the Championship to the Premier League, finishing runners up behind QPR.

They had three seasons in the Prem. Lambert left for Aston Villa and just as when Ron Saunders left for Villa, the Canaries went down. They won promotion straight away, beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the Play Offs at Wembley with goals from Huddersfield lad Cameron Jerome and Nathan Redmond.

Straight back down again though in 2017 as we passed them on the way up, reversing the fortunes of 1972. But they won the Championship again in 2019 and were promoted as we came down, reversing the fortunes of 2017. They finished five points ahead of Sheffield Utd, but came straight back down.

Just for one season though as they went back up again as champions, only to come straight back down again. A proper yo-yo club.

Head to Head

Norwich lead the head to head with 15 wins to Town's 13, with 17 draws.

That Head to Head was level pegging by the start of the 2020/21 season, but they went and did the double over us. That was the watch it on i-player season and we played them at the JSS in the first game of the season. We held them off for most of the game and it looked like a good point was coming our way. But then Todd Cantwell went unpunished for elbowing Richard Stearman in the face. I say unpunished, he got a yellow card for what was clearly a red.

In the very next minute a still startled Stearman played an awful backpass into the path of Teemu Pukki, who raced from the halfway line, rounded Ben Hamer in the Town goal and squared it for the unmarked sub, Adam Idah, who'd only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes, to tap into the empty net.

I was screaming at the ref for the injustice of it all, but he never heard me, I was sat in our front room. Whistle

Pukki scored a hat trick in the rematch down at Carrow Road on a Tuesday evening in April. This was the match that should've seen that Spanish snake Carlos Corberan sacked as we got stuffed 7-0. Potless Phil Hodgkinson and the club decided not to get rid though and showed a hell of a lot of loyalty to him, which he repaid by walking out last month to take up a job in Greece. Angry

Before that though, in our 2016/17 promotion season, we did the double over them. Elias Kachunga scored twice in a pre Christmas, Friday night Sky Sports extravaganza down at Carrow Road as we won 2-1. And the home game was also televised as we pumped them 3-0. Kacha on target again, as well as Aaron Mooy and Nahki Wells.

We have had some big losses down in Norwich over the years since I've been watching Town. We lost 4-1 in 85/86, 5-0 in 97/98, 4-1 in the next one, 3-0 in 09/10 and 5-0 in 14/15. Iwan Roberts, the Town legend, spoilt his legendary status a bit by scoring five goals against us, all at Carrow Road. What chances of a Town win in this? Norfolk n chance! Tongue

So what's going on down the side of the River Wensum? Managed nowadays by Dean Smith, the Walsall and Leyton Orient legend.

He was born in West Bromwich in 1971 and was the West Midland Junior Chess Champion before he signed a professional football contract with Walsall in 1989. He was a centre back and after five years as a Saddler, he became Hereford's record signing when they paid £80,000 for him in 1994.

His time at Edgar Street was a bit up and down, making it to the Play Offs, losing against Darlington, then getting relegated out of the League. At this point, he transferred to Leyton Orient. He made it to the Play Off Final twice with the O's, but then after nearly 300 games for them and a lifetime of lower league football, he was signed by Sheffield Wednesday, who were in what is now called the Championship. That didn't last long though. After less than half a season with t'Owls, he was relegated back to the 3rd tier.

He then had half a season at Port Vale before going back to coach the kids at Orient. That lasted a few years, working up to be assistant to Martin Ling, but both were sacked in a clear out in 2009. So he went back to another old club, Walsall. Two years as Youth Coach and he was suddenly thrust into his first management role when Chris Hutchings, the former Town full back was booted out of the Bescot.

He did alright, which ended up with him getting other jobs at Brentford, Aston Villa and now Norwich.

Last week's line up at Hull:

1 Tim Krul - Dutch keeper, ex Newcastle.
2 Max Aarons - Rolando's younger, less injury prone brother.
4 Andrew Omobamidele - 20 year old Irish defender.
5 Grant Hanley - Club captain, Scottish international.
19 Jacob Sørensen - 24 year old Danish midfielder.
10 Kieran Dowell - 24 year old Lancastrian midfielder.
23 Kenny McLean - 30 year old Scottish international midfielder.
26 Marcelino Núñez - 22 year old Chile international midfielder.
7 Milot Rashica - 26 year old Kosovo international midfielder.
22 Teemu Pukki - 32 year old Finnish finisher.
14 Todd Cantwell - 24 year old prick.

Subs:
6 Ben Gibson - Boro chairman's nephew, ex York City centre back.
20 Aaron Ramsey - Not that one, a kid on loan from Villa.
21 Danel Sinani - A legend at Leeds Road and Luxembourg.
24 Josh Sargent - Soccerballer from Missouri.
25 Onel Hernández - Cuban/German, was out on loan at Boro n Brum last season.
28 Angus Gunn - Son of another Gunn, Bryan the Norwich legend.
46 Liam Gibbs - 19 year old midfielder from Bury St Edmunds.

Club connections:

Iwan Roberts, I've mentioned already for scoring five goals against us as a Norwich player. Another player who always played well against us was Alex Pritchard. They had our pants down when we paid them an undisclosed fee for him, believed to be around ten million. James Vaughan was alright though. He signed from the Canaries in 2013 after a loan.

We have numpty managers with Canary connections. Mark Robins and Steve Bruce are both Norwich legends., not so highly thought of in Kirklees.

Danel Sinani, who was a vital member of our squad last season, said he would've joined us permanently had we gone up. He was of course, on loan from Norwich and instead he's now establishing himself in their team for this season. Although he joined the Canaries two years ago, he's only just made his debut for them and scored his first goal in the Carabooboo last week against Birmingham.

And our very own Jordan Rhodes won a Championship champions medal with Norwich in 2018/19 when he was on a season loan from the Wendies.

Norwich in popular culture:

'ow to get theere an' wheere to sup: There are car parks close to the ground. The one recommended for away fans is the Norfolk County Hall car park, which is a 15 minute walk away from the ground. It has spaces for 2,000 cars, but costs eight quid to get in.

Even closer to Carrow Road is Norwich Railway Station. It's about a ten minute walk. That walk takes you past The Queen Of Iceni, a Wetherspoons pub. Good luck trying to get a train back to Huddersfield at that time of night though. Rolleyes

If you fancy something a bit more up market, there's Delia's Restaurant and Bar at the ground. I doubt they'll let us in though.

There is the Stadia Bar, which despite it's name, isn't at the ground. It's five minutes walk from the station, but in the opposite direction to the ground. Still manageable though. That's on Upper King Street and welcomes away supporters.

If it's not booze you're looking for, there's a Costa, a Starbuck's, a TGI Fridays, Estabulo, Nando's, all on that walk from the station to the ground.

2016: Aston Villa (a) Championship, drew 1-1 (Michael Hefele)
2019: Fulham (h) Championship, lost 1-2 (Karlan Grant)

Not looking good! Played 12, WON 1, drew 6, lost 5.

We have a couple of iconic wins over Aston Villa though which both led to promotion. Slip of the fingers there. I put they were both wins, when the one in 2016 was only a draw. But it really did feel like a win after the Hef had come on late on and scored with his arse. Laugh

Apart from that, we have some proper early season dross in there.  Blush

Good game. Could have been 3 or 4 but 1 will do.
Mandy's goal was class. Banks was superb, just pinging balls all over, best of all to blue shirts.
Fitzsimmons didn't impress. Came out for a cross, missed it then watched their header thump the bar. Needs to do better on Tuesday.
King wasn't at the races or probably was because we wouldn't have missed him. Still think we made a mistake letting Carline go. King is either good or poor, there's no Inbetween. I know that's why he's at our level but he's also a hothead who when his games off winds himself up and gets involved in things he shouldn't.
Good start, looking forward to Tuesday.

Blackburn vs WBA - Match Thread

With three matches down in all competitions and Albion as yet undefeated, the stern tests just keep coming. Sunday afternoon takes us up to Ewood Park, where Blackburn sit third in the table following back-to-back victories, without conceding a single goal so far.

Our Rovers record is a decent one, last losing to the East Lancashire side on New Year's Day 2019, and winning 2-1 at Ewood last season; a second consecutive win on their turf would be a feat we haven't achieved since the 1890s. Hunting for that win may now be a little harder in personnel terms: the loan exit of Alex Mowatt is naturally a disappointment, and a loss to the team we were hoping to build this year, and it's vital that the wages saved go towards a striker who can take some pressure off Karlan Grant, currently the supplier of 45% of our goals under Steve Bruce.

Another point here would run the risk of making us look like draw specialists - it would, indeed, be the first time we've commenced a campaign with a hat-trick of draws since the Great Escape season - but realistically, handed a tricky opening with the team still a work in progress, we take what we can get. With Cardiff and Hull on the horizon, a point here would keep the tally ticking over until we can fire on all cylinders.

  Brentford 4 Man U 0 - the nightmare continues???
Posted by: 0762 - 13-08-2022, 21:49 - Forum: Manchester United - No Replies

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/62412424

OR time to cast off the "dead wood" and find a team of vg players and guys who are "triers"/don't give up easily. The Brentford manager admitting this game should never be 4-0 based on the stats and what happened in "open play". However, it was 4-0 and this follows the simple fact that ten Hag has not been able to sign the targeted players who he wanted and leaning toward a number of Dutch signings. I still don't like de Gea (the guy "flogged" today's match v Brentford - two giveaway early goals 1 and 2 and he was a total car crash goalie AGAIN!!!) and was very surprised they never made a move for Casper Schmeichel before Nice "snapped him up"! As for Maguire? I can't be bothered debating his position any more, criticised him enough long before this season ever started!! Rashford and McTominay should both be moved on as well - not good enough, IMO Rashford couldn't turn the match v Brighton last week with goals he should've scored from great scoring positions!! In reality, ten Hag has no solid "spine" through his new Man U side and started their first match at OT with a "false number nine" up front - not impressive at all!! And then tried to make a move for Arnautovic who is currently playing in Israel?? This guy is never close to being a proper Man U CF IMO!! Looks like lotsa work coming up for the Dutch coach or the "red devils" could end up being relegated if they are not too careful. No doubt more protests coming against the Glazer brothers who never react to it, but still "suck out" huge amounts of money from the club.

Livingston FC v Hibs, Sat 13 August, KO 3.00pm
Posted by: 0762 - 12-08-2022, 20:20 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (5)

https://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/article/li...rs-preview

Another tricky match coming up on that dreaded artificial pitch in Livingston and a big expectant Hibs support definitely gonna show up in a game with weather conditions much like matches played in Spain every week (but without the artificial pitch!). Lee Johnson saying he's "excited" re Hibs progress and coming to Livingston's ground. I must say that this match has become very important for Hibs and I really wanna see the boys winning this game. IMO it is imperative to set up a strategy to overcome the various constraints on the pitch, and the Lions' players, to get a huge positive boost esp after that morale-boosting result last weekend v Hertz. IMO it means nowt if we can't push on and overcome the Lions. Johnson must set high targets and this one isn't close to our ultimate target, but the threat from them must be respected. As usual, goal scoring could be a nagging issue again. However, Boyly has returned full of vigour and enthusiasm. Lets keep him as an "impact sub" until his fitness is "up to scratch". It looks like Campbell will be sidelined, Paul Hanlon almost back to full fitness and Stevo similarly recovering from injury. Johnson still got decent options although admitting Hibs may enter the transfer market again even though they are slightly over-budget. C'mon Hibs! Don't falter on this crap artificial pitch again!!

Old McGalphsmiths Farm
By the stream that was the River Colne
Turn right at the roadworks on Leeds Road
Unless your going the other way
So then turn left.

Kick-off 15:00 UK Time
Saturday 13/08/22

Now there's a novelty, 3pm kick-off on a Saturday afternoon just as the pubs are getting full. Do you think it will catch on? Should we petition the EFL for more games to start at this time or should we stick to Friday nights where you've a chance of missing your last bus home or Sunday afternoons and get home to a ruined Sunday dinner? Or one that's been kept warm for you - in the dog? Or do you prefer Saturday lunch time just as the pubs are opening? I would put this to the vote but it's a bit of a faff tbh.

Whether the Weather

It's gonna be a hot 'un.
This could be a game of 4 quarters or 6 thirds, depending on how often they stop for a cold 'un.
Don't bank on catching that 5 o'clock train (if it's even running) or bus.

Wading through the canal at Red Doles or the River/Stream Colne (what's left of it) before taking your seat might be advised.
The sinks in the toilets at the McGalphsmiths are not big enough to bath or shower in.
The pitch soakers used before the game and at half-time are, I'm reliably informed, er, refreshing but you might get arrested for running onto the pitch.
You have been warned.

Otherwise a word of advice from our sponsor Big Grin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVQeP5vRP5E

I'd like to wish everyone a happy new season but that's not exactly working out as hoped so far either is it?

That said, Forest only had 1 point after 7 games last season. Wonder what happened to them?
Admittedly they had a more expensively and (on paper) far better squad at this time last season than we've got right now.
It just took them about ooh, 20-odd seasons to find the right bloke to unlock the potential.

I'm told we need lots of patience, but I'm also told there's lots of them up the Infirmary that can't get treatment in A&E.
(b'dum, tisch). I'm here all week.

We welcome the lads from Smoke-on-Stench to the banks of the River Colne, where the water levels should now be low enough to make the recovery of rusty bikes, mangled supermarket trolleys and dead dogs a lot easier than it was at the end of last season when it was pissing it down with rain for fun.

Rain? - remember that? Oooooh, it was soooooo cool. Bloody freezing if I remember rightly.

Pre-match Pre-amble - or Rant

As most of my potential script for this match was being nobbled in the Preston post match discussion right before my eyes, (thanks boys and girls Laugh Thumb up) I don't think there's much point in going into the detail I was once considering.
That and I decided I was chewing off far more than I could post.

That said, here's some of my two-pennorth on what I've seen, heard and read so far.
Yes it's a rant, not a long one, but it's a rant. Feel free to move to the next section at your leisure.

In my opinion, despite promises to the contrary, or the bullshit written by the bloke in The Daily Mail who also got it wrong about ownership contracts being signed and handed over at Wembley, depending on which story you want to believe, Deano was happy to let LO'B and Toffo leave for what is rumoured to be less than LO'B's buy-out clause and certainly no more than we turned L666s down for last year. Deano has shown little inclination to reinvest that in a ready to go permanent replacement (as yet).

The other big miss is Colwill at the back, that's a fact, not my opinion.

Back to my opinion.
Having worked with sows ears for one season and managing to keep us up, Corberan got far more out of the squad than the sum of individual talents last season, helped by the much improved defensive line-up. The recruitment team (not Corberan though he eventually had a say) took great joy in being congratulated for that achievement. Whilst they weren't sows ears anymore, he really turned them into a silk purse. Had fans been in the stadiums in that first season, would he even have even been around, or sacked before the end of that first season? There were more than a few (holds up his hand) on this forum let alone the others that were questioning whey he was here.

What he saw coming this season, but a bit late for some of us (yes you Snoots) for their liking, was the expectation to do the same again but unfortunately with another load of sows ears. Don't blame him one bit for jumping ship and unfortunately, one of our own, Danny, has been given the shitty end of the stick. The recruitment department has been remarkably quiet on its (lack of) achievements so far, given the head of recruitment and our Chairlump together are also responsible for selling players for less than market value.

We've gone from a highly motivated squad where players could look round the dressing room and say, yeah, we can make this work, to one where the recruitment and reinvestment has been less than stellar (so far) and the players look at each other and go, nah, it's not gonna work like last season. From the two games I've attended, some of them aren't obviously putting the work in they obviously did last season either. Did Lewis really do all the running for everyone else?

With Pearson being injured, Lees is now covering for the replacements at the back as they aren't up to speed yet (and won't be) until Pearson at least returns and it isn't working.

So, as we keep getting told by our recruitment team, we try to bring in "better than we've got".
I'll buy into Tino coming back - the version we saw come on at Coventry last season has been the same version that has come on as a sub this season, but he wasn't really as effective when starting at Brum.

With an absence of the main one of the usual two man wrecking team, we've a midfield that is letting the opposition pass through them at will, a defence that is pulled everywhere as a result, shots are raining in on Nicholls and with the best will in the world, he can't stop all of them. I'd like to hope that Rudoni turns into another gem from being a rough diamond, but it's a big ask to step up in this atmosphere at the moment. I liked what I saw of him at Brum, he just had nobody to cross to or help him when he was 2 or 3 man marked most of the time.

Am I giving the forwards an easy ride? Well no. Ward took his goal well at Brum but has developed that "first touch of a stainless steel door" ability again, I question whether Koroma wants to be a footballer, let alone be here right now and Sorba The Taff's runs, passes and dead ball deliveries are way below his high standard of last season, so far.

Apart from that, everything in the garden is just rosy - well, it smells of the stuff you might put on your roses.

I applaud Danny Schofield for standing up to post-match scrutiny so far, with a lot of dignity and also for keeping Ryan Schofield away from the Preston match squad. Had he been in goal for that hammering (even as a sub, if he'd have had to come on) it would have finished his career in the eyes of the Town fans that look for easy scapegoats, and god knows we've loads of those hanging around the club. Corberan would more than likely have picked him, just remember that.

Your opinions are welcome, whether it's on my opinions or not. Rant over.

On the tellybox

Not showing anywhere (legally) at the moment that I can find, other than iPlayer commentary, maybe, and Radio Local. Good luck if you aren't at the ground.

Latest news

Colin Wanker is apparently going to be allowed to put his two-penn'orth in at half-time. What could possibly go wrong?
I'd rather he was doing the broomstick challenge to be honest. That really would be worth missing the long q's for pies and pees at half-time for.  Laugh

This sneeked in while doing my refining edits - Kayne Kesler-Hayden signs on loan
Spotted AmChaff's post a bit late and may make part of my rant look silly - I'll stand by what I've said as I'm no fortune teller.

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

Not aware of anyone other than Pearson and Kasumu

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

Most of the squad's performing like they aren't oven ready, unfortunately. They'll be playing in an oven like temperature on Saturday so just standing around will result in being burned to a crisp.

Last time out

For those with a really short memory, we lost 1-4 at home to Both Ends in the EFL Cup. Having reach the dizzy heights of Round 2, only to lose to those cheating Scouse b'stards Everton last season, hopes were high when we got a home game against a fellow Championship side that we'd last at least another 90 minutes, well certainly for more than 6 minutes anyway, before we waved the white flag in this season's comp.

Stoke played out another full 90 minutes without scoring again away from home on their 2nd attempt this season. On this occasion they didn't concede either, so it went to penalties. Sadly the 3 they converted weren't enough as Morecambe netted 5 of theirs to go through. They started with a 2-0 loss at Millwall, a 2-0 home win against Blackpool prior to this.

Last season they set off like a house on fire, or certainly smouldering profusely, and were in and around the Top 6 for the first half of the season. Then a few injuries kicked in in the New Year and the inconsistent Stoke we know and love came back into view as they slowly but surely dropped to mid-table obscurity, finishing 14th eventually.

The Sack Race

All's quiet on the western front at the moment, but even if poor Danny's odds are shortening on him at a rate of knots, let's not be too hasty and go in desperation looking for the football ugliness that is Dycheball, as is already being suggested by some elsewhere, or even Colin Wankerball, just because he's in the building this Saturday.

The 3 hot favourites from that lot upstairs at the moment are Frank Lampard (shurely that was lasht sheashon?), Ralph Hasenhuttl and a certain Mr. Steven Gerrard. Out of our league on wages? Maybe, maybe not. At least two of them have already banked enough brass from playing to not need to work again and the TV money for us is still far higher in The Chumpionship than League 1. Whether they'd jump back into the fire quickly if thrown out of the frying pan is another matter.

Innies and Outies

For the benefit of those looking in from the outside, I'll do both teams.

For Town I covered a chunk of this in my opening rant. For whatever reason (I've looked on 3 websites) Sinani and Colwill are listed on last seasons moves.

Stoke

I've checked a couple of times and I'm pretty sure their squad is now devoid of former Town players (certainly of recent times).
Benik (wandering minstrel) Afobe has signed at Millwall. If he ever played for Stoke it can't have been enough times to get his kit dirty. Smiffy has rocked up at Boro and Tom Ince has turned his loan move at Reading into a full blown father and son reunion.

Dwight Gayle was a source of much speculation as to where he might end up after leaving Newcastle. Well be turned up on the bonny, bonny banks of the Trent & Mersey canal.

Who's banging 'em in

It's a bit twerly for this but Jacob Brown (last seasons top scorer) and Harry Clark scored their goals against Blackpool.

Musical Interlude

Spreading the wings a little to include Staffordshire this time, well, for a few of them Whistle

Although the band was formed in Stafford, The Climax Blues Band was originally called The Climax Chicago Blues Band. The group was established in 1967. It featured Colin Cooper as vocalist and harmonica player, Pete Haycock as vocalist and guitarist, Derek Holt as the guitarist, Richard Jones as keyboardist and bassist, and George Newsome as the drummer.
They might have had Town in mind when they released this one, even way back in 1976.

If you were raving in the 1990s, you’re sure to remember the mightily influential rave duo Altern-8, who were known for their loud electronic songs with heavy-basslines. Mark Archer and Chris Peat, both from Stafford, were already successful artists with their techno group Nexus 21, which had formed in 1989. In 1990, they began Altern-8 as a side project and it turned out to be even more successful than their other band.

Other tracks included E-Vapor-8 and Hypnotic St-8 but I've not found one titled Rote-8, yet.

Formed in Stafford in 1989, Bizarre Inc. was a dance-pop and house band that got people moving on their feet to legendary tracks like Playing with Knives and I’m Gonna Let You. The latter reached number three in the UK singles chart, and it was number one in the US. And Bizarre Inc. scored another US number one with their hit Took My Love. The band was formed by Dean Meredith and Altern-8’s Mark Archer.

Yeah I know, not really my music, but I can live with it. Here to entertain first, educate 2nd, and hope Town win 3rd. Well, in this segment.

You know me, can't keep away from it, so there's this bloke from Stoke, Saul Hudson, learned to play the geetar and wandered off to the the mighty USofA, leaving the bright lights of Smoke-on-Stench behind 'im. Met up with a band looking for a lead geetarist, they became Gun's N' Roses, he might be better know to you as Slash. The rest as they say ... leads you to Paradise City.

Next up?

Town are at Norwich on Tuesday and at Coventry next Saturday.
Ever the optimist, I've booked my ticket for Coventry.  Cool
Somehow think we might not have quite as many there this season as last though.  Confused

And remember - don't light a BBQ this weekend just because you can if it might burn half the neighbourhood (or most of the Yorkshire moors) down.
Then again, maybe you've got a neighbour or two from hell who, er ....... just saying. Big Grin  Whistle

  Ticket Surcharge

If you buy a ticket on the day of the game you have to pay an extra £2 plus another £2 on top for printing the ticket so £4 in total. Encouraging fans to buy online and either print at home or use phone to get through the turnstiles.

There going to be trialling cashless concourses for 3 games.

I wonder if it's to cut down on operating costs and because bank's are charging for processing money now.

The media were reporting the other day that people using cash has gone up by 21% because people want to know what they are spending and to have the money physically in their hands. I will use cash for small things but use my card or contactless for thing's which cost over a tenner. Etc.

LAST MATCH

We got our first win of the season with 1-0 win over the Donuts. We started the better and were rewarded when Windass was tripped just outside the area but the ref pointed to the spot & Windass slammed home the penalty. FDB should have scored but the goalie saved. Onto the 2nd half and we tended to sit back and play on the counter. Stockdale had to make several saves to keep the lead and despite not creating too much in the 2nd half, we ran out winners.

THE MATCH

Our second home league game of the season sees the Addicks travel to Hillsborough. They have won & drawn so far this season and will be looking to stay unbeaten, they drew at Accrington then beat Derby last week after a mistake by someone called Wildsmith. Jayden Stockley is there main threat, he scored 13 goals last season and will want to improve on that number. They are managed by Johnnie Jackson who played nearly 250 times for the club and will be looking to get the club, like ourselves back into the Championship.
