  Richardson
Posted by: themaclad - 12-12-2023, 08:49 - Forum: Rotherham United - Replies (4)

Rotherham have appointed ex-Wigan boss Leam Richardson as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The 44-year-old takes over from Matt Taylor who was sacked last month.

The Millers are second-bottom in the Championship with 13 points from 20 games and are eight points adrift of safety.

Richardson led the Latics to the League One title, ahead of Rotherham, in 2021-22 but was sacked in November of that year after a slow start to the season.

"I've never turned a challenge down that I feel I can't meet head on and give my all," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"We can't guarantee results, but we can guarantee a certain level of performance and level of work ethic.

"When my tenure starts to when it ends, I'd like to think we'll have evolved and I'll have left the club in a better place than I found it."

Rotherham said the decision to appoint Richardson followed a "long and meticulous interview process" featuring "high-calibre candidates" and was driven by "Leam's credentials and vision for the project".

"I think I'm very similar to what Rotherham stands for," Richardson added. "It's about a strong work ethic and a dynamic football team.

"We'll evolve and do it methodically, a process that suits the football club and myself."

Taylor took over as manager at the New York Stadium in October 2022 after long-serving boss Paul Warne left for League One Derby.

The former Exeter boss kept them in the Championship last season but he was sacked in November after just two wins from their first 16 league games - only to be appointed by Bristol Rovers at the start of the month.

Richardson will need to improve Rotherham's wretched away form if they are to avoid a return to the third tier.

The Millers have not won a game on their travels since beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane 13 months ago.

  Temporary Boss
Posted by: themaclad - 11-12-2023, 17:28 - Forum: Burton Albion - No Replies

Burton Albion first-team coach Gary Mills has stepped up as caretaker boss as the Brewers search for Dino Maamria's permanent replacement.

Tunisian Maamria, 49, was sacked as manager following Saturday's League One loss against Stevenage.

Mills, 42, a former assistant manager at Wrexham, had joined Maamria's backroom staff in September.

He joined the Brewers from Coventry City, where he worked as lead professional development phase coach.

Burton chairman Ben Robinson issued just a 13-word statement on Saturday to say Maamria's 15-month tenure as boss had come to an end, but elaborated on the decision when naming Mills as his interim replacement.

"It's always a sad time when a manager leaves the club under these circumstances and we are disappointed that it didn't work out as we had hoped with Dino Maamria," Robinson told the club website.

"Dino was with the club for three years as assistant manager and manager and we want to thank him for what he did last season, galvanising the team in January with the signings he made that moved us away from relegation."

Mills, who counts Lincoln City, Mansfield Town and Stevenage among the clubs he played for, has previously also worked as a coach at King's Lynn, Northampton Town and MK Dons.

He will be in charge of Saturday's game at Oxford, with Burton looking to end a six-game winless run in the league that includes five defeats.

MANAGER

Darren Mark Moore (born 22 April 1974) is a professional football manager and former player who played as a centre-back. He is the current manager of EFL Championship club Huddersfield Town.

Born in England, he earned two international caps for Jamaica. Moore is also a member of the management committee of the Professional Footballers' Association. As a player, he represented Torquay United, Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City, Portsmouth, Derby County, Barnsley and Burton Albion. He also played for West Bromwich Albion, going on to serve as their manager between 2018 and 2019.

Darren made history by being the last player to be sent off at Deepdale on the artifical surface by leaving an imprint of Paul Raynor's head in the plastic

CULTURE

Lawrence Batley Theatre is a theatre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England which offers drama, music, dance and comedy.

The theatre is named after Lawrence Batley, a local entrepreneur and philanthropist, who founded a nationwide cash and carry chain.

The building was originally built in 1819 as a Methodist chapel, called the Queen Street Chapel.[1] The architect is unknown but the chief mason was Joseph Kaye, the man who was also responsible for Huddersfield station.[1][2] It was opened on 9 July 1819 and the reporter in the Leeds Mercury described it as "one of the most handsome and commodious chapels in the kingdom; being capable of accommodating 3000 persons, and has been erected at an expense of from 8 to £10,000".[3] The chapel became a mission in 1906 until a decline in numbers saw the mission move out of the building in 1970 to a new building in King Street.[4] In 1973 the building was converted into an arts centre. However serious structural problems were discovered by Kirklees Metropolitan Council in 1975 and the Arts Centre was rehoused into Venn Street Arts Centre and the building remained vacant before being sublet to Novosquash Limited and converted to a squash club known as The Ridings. It also housed a restaurant and a The Catacombs Disco.[5][6] In 1989 the Kirklees Theatre Trust was given the go ahead to save the building from deterioration and launch Huddersfield's newest theatre. Building work for the theatre started in September 1992 and took 4 years to complete.

Who’s Available?

After missing the Norwich City match through illness, Calvin Ramsay’s health will need to be assessed ahead of Tuesday.

Milutin Osmajić will also be monitored, with his return from injury expected either at the John Smith's Stadium or for the weekend’s visit of Watford.

Long-term absentee Emil Riis may also be in contention for that game at Deepdale against the Hornets.

Opposition Focus

Huddersfield Town, who occupy 21st position in the Championship – two points above the drop zone – head into Tuesday night unbeaten in their last four.

The vastly-experienced Neil Warnock left the club in September and former Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore took over, tasked with moving the Terriers up the table.

They’ve picked up some positive results in recent weeks, most notably a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, but the manager was left disappointed at the weekend that his side let a lead slip to draw at home to Bristol City

Match Official

Referee: John Busby
Assistant Referees: Richard Wild and Mark Russell
Fourth Official: Geoff Eltringham

John Busby will take charge of his first PNE match of the season on Tuesday night, having refereed four of North End’s games last term.

The Lilywhites were unbeaten in those matches, with the latest being a 2-1 victory over Reading in April.

Busby has shown 69 yellow cards and one red in the 15 games he’s taken charge of this season.

MACS VIEW

Having seemingly adopted a 1960's Italian way of playing with a 9-1-0 formation we head over to West Yorkshire with no doubt the intention of boring the pants off everyone in the ground.
The last two league games between the sides in Yorkshire could have been classed as an atrocity against football, lost 1-0 under Frankie, won their last season under Mr Fantastic after 90 plus minutes of utter dire rubbish, can we make it a hat trick of shocking games, every possibility.
Two wins from the last 13 is relegation form bizarrely we are 8th  only saving grace is, it's only an hour away

LAST MATCH

We made back to back wins as we claimed the points in injury time. The first half was a game of very few chances, Bernard had a header saved while Stoke had a few chances but didn't trouble Dawson. Onto the 2nd half and Stoke pressed a bit more and were given a penalty out of the blue when the ref judged Famewo pushed one of there players, but Dawson saved the day by saving the spot kick. It looked like the points would be shared but Musaba then found himself one on one with the keeper and finished well sending the away end into delirium.

THE MATCH

Next up and a trip to Norwich. Norwich have had a so so start to the season and currently lie in 13th place but are only 3 points off the playoffs and I expect them to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. They are currently managed by David Wagner, who was the manager when Huddersfield won promotion to the premier league, after disposing of us in the playoff semi final on penalties Angry There leading scorer is Jonathan Rowe with 8 goals, but he was only a sub at the weekend.

Huddersfield Town  v Preston North End
The Sky Bet Championship
Tuesday December 12th - 19:45 ko
at the John Smith's Stadium

Huddersfield Town welcome Preston North End to the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday evening for what promises to be a feast of free flowing, fast attacking football. Whistle

Town go into this match on a roll, unbeaten in four matches, including a superb away win in Sunderland. Preston, on the other hand, haven't won in the last four matches and haven't scored in the last three. Only one winner on paper here then. Tongue

Head to Head

Preston lead the head to head with 39 wins to Town's 37, with 24 draws.

We were level pegging in those win, loss, draw statistics at the beginning of last season. But after being drawn against the Lillywhites in both League Cup and FA Cup, both of which we lost and then losing at home in the league, we had a shock victory away at Deepdale.

First up, came the Carabooboo game, early on in the season. It was the third match of the season, when Danny Schofield had been handed the job as manager following the surprise departure of Carlos Corberan. We had lost the opening two league games against Burnley (h) and Birmingham (a) when PNE came here and wallopped us 4-1. They were three up at half time and four up shortly after the break with Troy Parrott, Alistair McCann (2) and Brad Potts scoring before Jordan Rhodes scored a consolation.

Schoey had been sacked before we went to Preston in October. His replacement, a little known Scotsman who had been coaching in Germany alongside some of the biggest names in world football, was four games into his spell as Head Coach. Mark Fotheringham had started with, a defeat at Reading, a draw at Luton, a victory against Hull at home and then a disappointind loss at Rotherham as PNE came back to the John Smith's Stadium and won again. One-nil this time with Greg Cunningham scoring the goal.

Then came the shock of all shocks on Boxing Day. Not an earth shattering shock, but the shock waves for those of us who pretend that statistics somehow matter, were immense. Town hadn't won a match of any description at Deepdale since 1969, but goals from that man Rhodes again, equalising a first half Preston goal from Cunnigham, and a late winner from Kaine Kesler-Hayden gave us that unlikely victory putting the name of Fotheringham next to club legend Ian Greaves in the record books.

Normal service was resumed soon after though when we went back to Deepdale for that FA Cup encounter. Tyreece Simpson had been handed the job of leading the attack in the starting XI, but he was ineffective and hauled off at half time. His replacement was the ex Hibs striker Florian Kamberi, who made such a brilliant impact on his debut, scoring the opening goal of the game after being on the pitch for just 12 minutes. However, a Tom Lees own goal, followed by goals from Bambo Diaby and Alan Browne, meant that this re-playing of the 1922 and 1938 Cup Finals, would not end with the team of renown bringing the Cup back to Huddersfield.  Rolleyes

So what's going on down Sir Tom Finney Way? Managed nowadays by Ryan Löwe, the Bury legend.

He scored well over 200 goals in an 18 year playing career, which never got higher than League One, despite having the massive names of Sheffield Wednesday and Milton Keynes Dons on his CV.

His management career started in the middle of a Town connected managerial roundabout. Having become player/coach at Bury, he became caretaker in October 2017 when the Shakers shook off ex Town boss, Lee Clark. Löwe had six games in charge before ex Town centre back Chris Lucketti took over. And then when luckless Lucketti lost his job, it was Mrs Löwe's lad in again to steady the shaking ship. Didn't quite work though, despite him ending his playing career to concentrate on the job in hand, they got relegated to League Two.

He was offered the full time job though and managed to get them straight back up. However, Bury had been taken over by some numptie who wasn't keen on paying the players and more importantly, the Taxman. And so when Plymouth Argyle came sniffing around, looking for a new manager, Löwe jumped ship.

That was in June 2019 and in his first season at Home Park, he got them promoted from League Two, finishing in 3rd place in the Covid interrupted season. But with Argyle poised for another pip at the promotion race, in December 2021, he quit. This was something of a surprise, but obviously there had been some underhand underhandedness going on as the next day he was unveiled as the new boss of Preston North End.

He has since continued the recent Deepdale tradition of mid table obscurity, neither seriously worrying the top 6 or the bottom three.

HTAFC Prediction League 2023/24 Matchday 20
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 11-12-2023, 09:54 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (16)

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Random Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The random badger Badger is used for any random prediction used once in each matchday sequence. For instance, a scorer at a particular match, the number of red cards in the matches or yellow cards or own goals or owt you want really within reason, I do need to be able to check whether it's correct or not. Please don't put stuff like....."Commentator says...."  Rolleyes
The joker  Laugh is played for one match in each sequence and if correct you get double points. So if you've predicted 1-0 and it finishes 2-0, you get 4 pts, but if you've predicted 2-0, that's 8 pts. But if you get it wrong, it's minus 2.
Jokers and badgers are optional. You don't have to play one if you don't want.

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. Similarly with the badger, if your random prediction is affected by this, it'll be half the points.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

End of season Play Offs: The one who finishes top of the league will still be champion, but after the season finishes there will be Play Offs between the top 4, with 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd. This will take in stuff like the EFL Play Offs, FA Cup Final, final day of Prima Donna League, European Finals etc. It will be one matchday for the semis and one for the Final. It will be the individual scores for each matchday against the allotted opponent, with some kind of tie breaker for a drawn match.

The prize for winning will be enormous. Another rep point. Whistle

So we have a new format for this season, which I put forward as an idea at the end of last season. Nobody offered any objections so here it is explained......

Firstly, I thought it was getting a bit boring towards the end with the league format as it was with the champion being so far ahead and everybody else not much to play for apart from the push for a play off spot, which was a bit of an anticlimax anyway. The most exciting bit was the tussle for 8th, 9th and 10th positions with Shep, Ritchie and Amelia.  Whistle

So I'm splitting the group up into two groups with the top six from last season in the top group and the bottom six in group 2. At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the New Years Day games and the FA Cup 3rd round weekend. (edit: willbe the Twixtmas fixtures and the NYD fixtures)

The second season will start the following week, finishing on the last game of the Championship season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of Championship fixtures and bonus matches. And not as many fixtures to go at. Hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The rest of the rules will be the same as before apart from the Badger which will still be in use, but I'm going to get arsey about it. Sometimes in the past, I've been able to just award two points immediately because it was such a nailed on thing to happen. Not accusing anyone of cheating. Far from it. I didn't put any boundaries on it, so anything was alright. So now I'm restricting it to three goal scorers in any of the games in your group. Sorry to all our more adventurous badgerers.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

The joker  Laugh will still be the same as before, ie doubling your points for a correct prediction or minus 2 for getting it wrong.

Postponed matches will only count if the match is re-played before the next Matchday is under way. Abandoned matches will be awarded half the points for the score at the time of abandonment, so 1 point if you have the correct result, 2 points if you have the correct score.

Still to come......

Matchday 21 - weekend of Dec 23/24 and Boxing Day fixtures

That will conclude the first season, with 6th in Div 1 and 1st in Div 2 swapping places. And 5th in Div 1 and 2nd in Div 2 having a 2 legged Play Off.

2023/24 Play Offs 1st leg - weekend of Dec 29/30

The Exit door opens for Alex
Posted by: themaclad - 10-12-2023, 19:35 - Forum: Stoke City - No Replies

Stoke City have sacked Alex Neil as manager following Saturday's home defeat by Championship bottom club Sheffield Wednesday.

The 42-year-old Scot spent 16 months in charge in the Potteries after leaving fellow Championship side Sunderland to join Stoke in August 2022.

He led Stoke to 16th last season, a fall from the previous two campaigns, when they had each time finished 14th.

But they have struggled this term and currently sit 20th in the table.

Despite an expensive 18-man summer overhaul, the Potters have won just six of their 20 league matches.

Stoke reconstruction still in its 'infancy' - Neil
Assistant Martin Canning has also left the club and Paul Gallagher will take charge of the team for Tuesday's home game against Swansea.

Chairman John Coates told the club website: "Alex is a man of absolute integrity who has given his all for Stoke City and we would like to thank him for his hard work during his time with the club.

"We are grateful for the building blocks he has helped put in place in bringing together a group of players in whom we have a huge amount of faith regarding their ability to turn things around this season, and who can help us achieve longer-term success.

"However, with the way the results have been so far, we have made the difficult decision to seek a new direction for the team at this time.

"Nothing matters to me more than the success of our club and we are now working towards the appointment of Alex's successor."

Neil said after Saturday's 1-0 defeat by the Owls: "When people describe it as a lonely place being a manager, that game probably epitomised it.

"When you're doing well and you're winning games - and I've been fortunate enough to experience that in my career - everybody is with you.

"Everybody's part of it, everybody feels as if they've put something towards it.

"When it's like that, and it has been like that in the last three matches, you're on your own."

Neil's spell at Stoke was his fourth as a Championship manager, following previous jobs with Norwich City, who he led to promotion via the play-offs in 2015, Preston North End and Sunderland,

His first post was in his native Scotland as player-manager with Hamilton Academical from 2013, until joining the Canaries in January 2015.

Potters mission to get back in the Prem
The Potters spent 10 seasons in the top flight from 2008 to 2018, first under Tony Pulis, then Mark Hughes.

But since Hughes' departure in January 2018 when Stoke were already on course for relegation, after Paul Lambert, Gary Rowett, Nathan Jones, Michael O'Neill and Neil, they are now looking for a sixth manager in as many years.

In their time back in the Championship, other than at the start of the 2021-22 season under O'Neill, when they made a flying start to climb to third in the table in early October, their final placings have been an almost symmetrically-perfect modicum of mediocrity - 16th, 15th, 14th, 14th, 16th.

Burton Albion have sacked manager Dino Maamria after the Brewers lost for the fifth time in a six-game winless run in League One.

Saturday's 2-1 loss against high-flying Stevenage was their fourth straight league defeat.

It leaves them just two places and four points above the relegation zone after 20 matches.

The defeat ended a week in which Burton beat Wrexham to advance to the last 16 of the EFL Trophy.

Maamria's dismissal "with immediate effect" was announced in a 13-word club statement attributed to chairman Ben Robinson.

After the loss against Stevenage, 49-year-old Maamria told BBC Radio Derby that he would be meeting with Robinson and spoke openly about how vulnerable his position was.

"If it's my last game today, I want to tell everybody thank you very much - I loved my time here," he said.

"The fans were obviously not happy at the end and I totally understand their frustration. It's a winning business and I haven't won enough games.

"What I have to say is that I work relentlessly hard with very limited resources and I've done my absolute best."

Maamria was in charge for 15 months at the Pirelli Stadium, having stepped up from assistant to replace Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink when Burton were bottom of the third tier last season.

It was on his insistence during a meeting with Robinson that the ex-Stevenage and Oldham boss was handed the job on a permanent basis when taking over from Dutchman Hasselbaink.

He repaid the faith by overseeing a huge turnaround and despite spending just three days outside the drop zone before February, he managed to keep Burton up with three games to spare.

That strong finish to their last campaign, however, was followed by a disastrous start to the season, as they collected just two points from the first 21 that were on offer.

A seven-game unbeaten league run, that included five wins, saw the east Staffordshire side comfortably move themselves up to mid-table before their latest dip in form cost Maamria his job.

  Livingston v Hibs - Saturday 9 Decenber
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 09-12-2023, 00:52 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (1)

Hibs start their 3 pre-Christmas game schedule with a trip to Livingston. Each one is definitely winnable and could get us inching up the table. As it's just along the road, there should be a big turn-out of Hibs fans.

They'll be there to celebrate 3 points gained and a chance to keep Livi down at the bottom of the table. Livi have lost their 6 previous games and haven't scored in the last 5. We must be alert and composed and let our speed merchants strut their stuff.

Monty on the game
“We know it will be a tough game away at Livingston. They are a well-organised, physical side that will be difficult to beat. We expect them to fight for everything. They are on their own pitch at home, which they are used to playing on. For us, there are no excuses - we have trained on the synthetic this week due to the snow earlier in the week. It is a tough game for us, but we know we have a good crowd coming down to support us which we are all really grateful for.”
