McGeady is in the same position Hooper was when he first joined, he hasn't been playing. It took Hooper awhile before we saw the best of him and he's now a regular first teamer, hopefully the same happens to Mcgeady.
Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so. For glory gives herself only to those who have always dreamed of her.

Valuable Point

This was one of those matches where it was easy to lose perspective when you are close to it but easier to judge by taking several steps back. Back in August, I listed all 46 matches is order of difficulty to produce a sort of swingometer with points at which we needed to win to stay up, be mid table, hit the Playoffs & get promoted. I listed Hull away a our number one toughest match back then and nothing I have seen since has changed that view. So before we start criticising anyone, let's view this performance in that context - our toughest match of the season.

CC made several changes, most significantly resting Hunt, Pudil & Sasso and bringing in Palmer, Bennett & Turner. Hutchinson replaced Wallace & FF replaced Nuhiu. While it wasn't the way I would have gone, CC made bold changes. No-one can argue (afterwards) about the defensive changes. The back four blunted the league leaders attack magnificently with Turner winning just about everything in the air, Palmer kept the most dangerous left sided duo in the division quiet while Bennett grew well into the match despite lacking support at times.

I have seen Hull tear defences apart this season yet our "shadow" back four rarely looked troubled until our tiring midfield gave them next to no protection. Full marks to CC for those changes.

Our formation was not so easy to work out as it wasn't our 4321 winning formation but it wasn't the 442 we have often used either; it was a sort of hybrid. CC explained afterwards that it was a sort of 441 with an extra player that could "lopside" play to our advantage.

I thought that we nearly had a perfect first half. We nullified their early pressure, controlled the game and nearly scored, first when Bannan's cross shot was almost turned into his own net by Davies and then when FF's shot came back off the woodwork. If either of those had gone in, we most likely would have won.

Hull upped it in the second half and we gradually dropped deeper & deeper. Bannan, Lee & Hutchinson had less & less influence and it became a hands to the pumps exercise in getting a draw. McGeady was a peripheral figure again and was replaced by Wallace while Hutchinson was replaced by Lopez.

It appeared that our ambitions were to hang on for the draw although I couldn't help thinking that Joao might just have given Hull something to think about defensively for the final ten minutes.

In the end, most of the talk was of the referee and the red card for FF. Firstly, it all started by picking up a silly & innocuous first yellow for shirt pulling - a silly offence. I said to Young Padawan then that I hope that doesn't cost him. Clearly the referee made a terrible error with the red card and will be sanctioned but he got it all wrong. He was perfectly placed, Dawson wiped FF out and yet he had the cards out in less than two seconds. Anyone who watches "You Are the Ref" (and all football fans should) will know that the experts (Keith Hackett & Mark Halsey) always say that referees should give themselves thinking time before making a big decision. One other recurring comment on YATR is that a referee should never make a decision that no-one is expecting. Here, it was a question of what card Dawson would get (should have been yellow) but instead the referee appeared to want to be the star & shock everyone. To quote Keith Hackett, "If you are going to accuse a player of being a cheat then you have to be 100% correct."

Westwood - 7 - did everything needed

FF - 7 - flashes of brilliance
Hooper - 7 - quality but need chances to fall his way

Wallace - 6
Lopez - 6
Nuhiu - 6

In my mind, this is one of those points in the season where we draw a line and get ready to go for the next run of matches against Rotherham, Brighton, Forest & Charlton. Unfortunately the loss of FF for the first two games will cast a shadow that hopefully won't cost us dear. If we can pick up eight or more points from those games then we will be set for the final run in well placed for the Playoffs.

I think it will be tough to make automatic promotion so we can focus on making the Playoffs in ideal shape to win a two legged tie and a final to make a return to the PL. Performances like last night are part of what will be required to achieve this.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

I'll be honest, I thought he'd dived from the view at the opposite end of the ground but having watched the replays the ref has had a shocker. He had managed the game perfectly before then.

Westwood 8

Palmer 8
Lees 8
Turner 9. Man of the match
Bennett 8

McGeady 6
Lee 6
Hutchinson 5
Bannan 8

Hooper 8
FF 7

Turner was superb. His best game for us, I hope he can prove to be the player I hoped he was when we signed him. Bannan ran the game in the first half. Constantly wanting the ball and some of his little touches were delightful. McGeady is excellent at keeping the ball and finding a simple pass, I bet he carried the ball further than any other Wednesday player. Hooper and FF are a decent partnership but not the finished article and there is something missing. FF has proved more influential when starting from the left and Bannan can stay involved for longer when central. Nuhiu and Joao haven't been good enough to force CC to play them so FF has been used up front. Hooper is excellent in between the lines but needs service. Bannan is constantly wanting to play inside which leaves McGeady as the only wide option and the only chance of getting the ball in centrally. Especially when the full backs don't push on away from home.

Hutchinson is never fit. He only looked at about 60% and was often chasing the game.

Three players short of a Champ winning side. A strong and powerful goal scorer, a fit Sam Hutchinskn that can play 46 games a season and a winger that frightens the opposition.

Watched the game on telly last night and thought we put in an excellent defensive away performance without really threatening to push on and win. Turner was excellent and Bennett did very well too. That was the best Palmer has played for some time, especially when you consider he's been sat on the bench for ages. Agree that Hutchinson looked short of match fitness and hopefully he isn't injured again.

The red card was the right decision but for the wrong player. Dawson was late but also ridiculously high. He knew he should have been carded he was just waiting to see what colour it was. The ref has made a glaring mistake after having a decent game up to that point. Hope it doesn't cost us missing Forestieri in the next 2 games. He's the one who can produce a bit of magic that can turn a game.

rewind rewind ..... Palmer was terrible ???? he may have defended ok but bare inmind Carlos football is about attacking wingbacks !! palmer cant do none of this ? we had 2 clear cut chances at the end of the game when all our forwards where waiting for a cross , nothing special just a cross wipped in head hieght ? palmer who hasnt played in ages didnt have the energy to lift the ball higher than the defenders knee ??? his attacking throws are a waste always he gives the ball directly back to the oposition ? he cant take a man on thats for sure ?? so where you are getting palmer played well from ill never know ? hes not good enough for our football revolution anymore ? hunt is a good attacking defender but lacks defending also isnt quite good enough either but he is a better option at this moment ! and to turner ( consilio ) yes he did play well but not that good ? he did all the bsic defending steps that a center half is required to do but nothing special ? although id much rather he keeps this up and leaves the flashy stuff to lees and we will be better equiped than i first thought before kickoff ! losing forest the next 2 games is going to kill us as we have knowbody who can attack the ball from 30 yards out take a man on and hit it with venom !! hooper cant do this ? nuhui cant and shouldnt ever think he can do this ? joao needs to start the next game simple we cant do another QPR balls up with Nuhui being stagnent and hooper sat waiting for attention ?we have to start 4-3-3 or the points will just piss away against warnocks fight kick bite and cheat like xxxx bus that will park infront off the kop !! and mcgeady may need time ? meanwhile should we piss points away then ??? no we shouldnt he shouldnt be included hence why the xxxx did we loan him out if hes not ready ? hooper was aquired half a season ago when we where only dreaming of the playoffs ? the mcgeady signing is all wrong if you ask me !!

Where is Mathias? Is he injured again ? Would it not make more sense to get our own players match fit and find out if he is good enough ?

I am not McGeadys biggest fan as I don't see what he offers...he might run with a ball but he can't cross and if he can we don't have a big man to score so I am with Imre and don't see what he adds.... Hopefully he will score the winner in Wembley....

If we want the play-offs we need the likes of Lee and Bannan to name 2 to remain fit and energetic for the remainder of the season.....after the week we have had and there performances they are the main fellas who need a rest. We are in a sticky situation now as regards squad and maintaining form..... The squad actually needs a boost now be it a good energetic midfielder.
If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, you need a team....

Palmer nor Mcgeady could beat anyone with a cross, every one hit a Hull player, generally the first man.
Definitely a good point earned away imo. I thought Hull's forward movement was excellent and we did very well to frustrate them, they consistently closed us down quickly never allowing us to settle on the ball.
A few spells of quick end to end action made it an enjoyable goalless draw to be fair. We defended well, to me, it only looked like there was going to be one team that scored and that would be Hull.

It only feels like a loss due to another referee with a brown envelope in his pocket.
