It's beyond me why Hanlon has been a first pick (when fit) for Hibs defence in the past few years and I base that criticism on his inconsistent form plus past big matches, Scottish Cup semis and finals - that's the bench mark and he has been mince and never could step up to the plate and play to a top standard. Any opposing team that plays a pressing game against a Hibs defence with Hanlon in it would generally be rewarded with a goal or goals!! It has always baffled me why so many Hibs managers could never identify his deficiencies as a Hibs defender. I've nothing against the lad, a Hibs youth product, but IMO he was never good enough!! Rob Jones is currently a player-coach at Doncaster. Hibs should try to coax him back in a short-term deal - he's a leader, is an experienced defender, has a strong Hibs affiliation and he ticks all the boxes to bolster Hibs defence.

Hanlon has been an Under-19 and Under-21 Scotland internationalist, but like many others he hasn't progressed since then. I honestly doubt whether anyone else is any better. Forster would be a good alternative but he's about the same standard.

Hanlon costs us a goal just about every week,he is ok with the ball but pressed in any way by our opponents and he collapses.

We need a left back and a decent centre back...stubbsy should know what he's doing there- he was good enough himself.

I look back at Hibs previous defensive stalwarts like Le God, Franck Sauzee, and even Rob Jones (and other good defenders/leaders), and really wonder how Hibs managers could drop their standards so low in years gone by but that's the reality of the situation at Hibs. The conundrum is how certain Hibs managers, who were decent defenders, couldn't resolve such a fundamental defensive problem when setting up the foundation of their team and yet look around at the practise of other Scottish football clubs that are no bigger than Hibs FC and they are doing it better with limited resources.

Today's revelation that Keatings' latest injury renders him out for an unspecified period, possibly months, beggars belief because the guy has hardly kicked a ball in earnest!!! I'd personally like to know how Hibs conduct their medical checks to potentially new players? What a blow to our chances of doing anything this season although one crumb of comfort is the fact that Martin Boyle is well on the way to recovery and should be fully fit to compete for a 1st team place. However, we need as many decent goal scorers available to us and not recovering from injuries etc!!
