£60k prize money although he’s got management fees, travel and accommodation to come out of that…not to mention the tax man will want his share

Write off as much of that expense against tax as you can before the taxman gets his hands on any of it. If his management aren't helping with his financials, he either needs new management or I can recommend a good accountant that charges £400/yr if he classes himself as a sole trader or a bit more if he classes himself as a limited company and pays himself "a dividend" every month/year. He'll likely pay less tax on the latter if he's going to be earning in the 6 figures, which would seem likely.

Sports folk, musicians etc with what you might call "unreliable income" can spread their gains/losses over a few years to minimise the tax pain from a big year of earnings against the lean years that may prevail either side. That and stick what you can in a good pension scheme. You get tax relief added to that.
