Mansfield Town have signed striker Will Evans on a two-year deal from Newport County.

The fee for the 27-year-old is undisclosed but is believed the be close to £200,000.

It is the first transfer fee Newport have received since 2018.

Evans netted 21 goals in League Two last season, despite the club finishing 18th in the division.

He joins a club who are back in the third tier for the first time since 2003, Mansfield having finished third in League Two behind Stockport County and Wrexham.

“I’m buzzing to be here," Evans told the club website.

"I can’t wait to start this new challenge. I’m over the moon to be here and will give my all for the club.”

Newport always expected interest in Evans this summer and triggered an extension to his contract at the end of last season.

County chairman Huw Jenkins said: “We are obviously disappointed to lose Will after such a good campaign last season.

“But he is in the last year of his contract and expressed a strong desire to test himself at a higher level. We discussed the situation with Will and his agent over the summer and we agreed that if a reasonable offer came in then we would both move forward with clarity.

“The club is still at a rebuilding stage after a difficult few years financially, so it was an offer we couldn’t turn down at this stage in our journey."

Newport last received a transfer fee when Tom Owen-Evans joined Falkirk in an undisclosed deal six years ago.

The club’s record sale is the £400,000 they received from Peterborough for Conor Washington in 2014, a sum which includes add-ons from his subsequent move to Queens Park Rangers.

Former Cardiff Met player Evans joined Newport from Cymru Premier League side Bala Town in May 2022.

“The club gave me an opportunity two years ago and I can easily say it’s been the best two years," said Evans.

"For now it’s time to say goodbye, to undertake a new challenge, one that I personally couldn’t turn down."

Evans backed up his impressive league tally last season by scoring in the 4-2 FA Cup defeat to eventual winners Manchester United, finishing with 25 goals in all competitions.

Evans is the second forward recruit in a week for Mansfield, after they completed a move for former Celtic academy teenager Ben Quinn.

"Will’s a striker who we’ve watched for the past 12 months and feel he will complement the team and the other forwards in the squad," said Stags boss Nigel Clough.

“He gives us something different and his goals return last season was excellent.”

Mansfield Town have signed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Matthew Craig on loan for the remainder of the season.

The versatile 21-year-old, who is capable of playing at centre-back and right-back, spent the first half of the season with Mansfield's League One rivals Barnsley before being recalled by Spurs on Thursday.

He made 16 appearances for the Tykes, having stepped up to the third tier with them after a spell on loan in League Two with Doncaster Rovers last term.

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough says the Scotland Under-21 international is someone the club has had its "eye on for some time".

"The one position we haven't got competition for is Louis Reed and Matthew provides us with that," Clough told the club website., external

"He's a similar player to Reedy; a good passer of the ball who competes. He can play in any one of the three midfield positions and has some experience in League One this season with Barnsley."

Meanwhile, Stags' 21-year-old forward James Gale has been recalled from his loan with National League side Solihull Moors.

Mansfield Town have signed Blackpool's Jordan Rhodes and fellow forward Caylan Vickers from Brighton and Hove Albion on loan for the rest of the season.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday forward, who has scored more than 240 goals across his career, spent last season on loan at Blackpool from Huddersfield Town.

Lucas Akins' future with Mansfield Town beyond this summer remains undecided despite the striker being jailed for 14 months.

The 36-year-old was sentenced to prison in April after pleading guilty to causing the death of a cyclist by careless or inconsiderate driving.

Adrian Daniel, 33, died 10 days after he was struck by a Mercedes G350 being driven by Akins near Huddersfield in March 2022.

Despite being out of contract in the summer, Akins has not been included on the League One club's list of players being released.

Instead the club has said it is "continuing to consider its position" regarding the striker and added that "no further comment" will be made.

Akins was a Mansfield player when the crash happened more than three years ago and continued to play for the Stags until he was jailed.

Even when he pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court on 4 March, he started a league match just hours later.

Following Akins' sentencing more than a month later, Stags boss Nigel Clough said the jail term came as an "unbelievable shock" to the club.

In an interview with BBC Radio Nottingham, Clough said Akins future at the One Call Stadium was still being discussed.

"Nothing will be decided immediately. Everybody is just digesting what was an unbelievable shock this week," the Stags boss said at the time.

Meanwhile, Mansfield have triggered contract extensions for Baily Cargill, Elliott Hewitt, Aaron Lewis, Rhys Oates and Louis Reed, while Jordan Bowery, Dom Dwyer, Stephen McLaughlin, Scott Flinders and Lee Gregory remain in talks about new deals.

Goalkeeper Christy Pym, who made 42 appearances this season, has been released alongside Hiram Boateng, Aden Flint, Alfie Kilgour, Calum Macdonald, Tom Nichols, Ben Quinn, Stephen Quinn and George Williams.

Mansfield Town have signed Regan Hendry on a two-year deal after the midfielder ended discussions about staying with League Two side Tranmere Rovers.

The 27-year-old Scot was among eight players in talks with Rovers about new deals earlier this month, but he has opted to move up to League One with the Stags.

Hendry, who came through Celtic's youth teams before going on to start his senior career with Raith Rovers, last featured in England's third tier with Forest Green Rovers in 2023.

And it was at Mansfield on the final day of the 2021-22 season that Hendry helped Forest Green clinch the League Two title.

He moved to Tranmere on loan by the middle of the following season, before making his stay at Prenton Park permanent in the summer of 2023.

Stags boss Nigel Clough said the central midfield is a player that the club has "admired for some time".

"He's an all-round midfield player who can play two or three different roles and will complement the midfielders who we already have in the squad," Clough told the club website.

Goalkeeper Liam Roberts has joined League One side Mansfield Town after being released by Millwall.

During the 30-year-old's solitary campaign at The Den, Roberts was banned for six games after he was sent off eight minutes into his side's FA Cup fifth-round defeat at Crystal Palace for kicking Eagles forward Jean-Philippe Mateta in the head as he rushed out of goal.

It was the sixth and last time the goalkeeper featured for the Lions.

Roberts, who apologised to Mateta for the incident that hospitalised the Frenchman and left him needing several stitches, became the target of online abuse, which Millwall condemned as "abhorrent and disgusting".

The former Middlesbrough, Northampton Town and Walsall goalkeeper, who last featured in League One for Barnsley on loan in the 2023-24 season, moves to Mansfield to replace first-choice Christy Pym, who was released by the Stags at the end of the campaign.

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough says he feels Roberts "fits the bill perfectly" as their new number one.

"He's played against us over the years and we've been very impressed by him," Clough told the club website., external

"He has Championship experience as well as a lot of experience in League One."
