Stags news - themaclad - 11-05-2023 Mansfield Town have released two players after Nigel Clough's side missed out on the League Two play-offs. Strikers Danny Johnson, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Walsall, and Jimmy Knowles have both come to the end of their contracts. But the side have offered new deals to George Cooper, Jason Law, James Perch, Stephen Quinn and Kieran Wallace. And contract extension options have been triggered for Taylor Anderson and Scott Flinders. Loan players Riley Harbottle and Will Swan (Nottingham Forest) and Christy Pym (Peterborough United) have returned to their respective clubs, leaving 16 players signed up for next season. Mansfield finished eighth in League Two, missing out on the play-offs by just one goal. Contracted players for 2023-24: Lucas Akins, Hiram Boateng, Jordan Bowery, Ollie Clarke, James Gale, Anthony Hartigan, Elliott Hewitt, Callum Johnson, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Alfie Kilgour, George Maris, Owen Mason, Stephen McLaughlin, Rhys Oates, John-Joe O'Toole, Louis Reed. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 18-05-2023 Mansfield Town have signed forward Will Swan from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee following his loan spell with the Stags this season. Swann, 22, finished the season as top scorer with 10 goals in 34 appearances as the Stags narrowly missed out on the League Two play-offs by just one goal. He has signed a three-year contract, with the option of a further year. "It's exciting. We're delighted with what we've seen during the past nine months," said boss Nigel Clough. "He fits the bill of a young striker with bags of potential and complements our other forward players. We look forward to seeing more goals from Will in the coming seasons." Swan's signing will be ratified when the summer transfer window opens in June. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 24-05-2023 Veteran midfielder Stephen Quinn has signed a new one-year contract with Mansfield Town. Quinn, 37, joined the Stags in January 2021, initially on loan from Burton, and made 44 appearances last season. "I think it's fair to say that Quinny has established himself as a firm favourite here, especially with the supporters," boss Nigel Clough said. "He's a very influential player, both on the pitch on a Saturday and setting standards in training during the week." The former Republic of Ireland international played in the top flight for Sheffield United and Hull City. His career also included a three-year spell at Reading. "I'm delighted to get this over the line and am excited for the new season to start," Quinn said. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 26-05-2023 Mansfield Town have signed left-back Calum MacDonald on a two-year deal following his release from League One side Bristol Rovers. The 25-year-old featured four times in four months for the Pirates after arriving from Stockport in January. He had only been with Stockport for three months and previously played for Tranmere, Derby, Blackpool and Barrow. "This seems like the perfect place for me at this stage of my career," MacDonald told the club website. MacDonald joins a Stags side that will be missing experienced defender Stephen McLaughlin for the start of next season because of a knee injury. "With Macca [McLaughlin] missing the start of the season due to injury, we needed someone who can go straight into the line-up at left-back and Calum fits the bill," said Mansfield boss Nigel Clough. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 01-06-2023 Mansfield Town have signed defender Baily Cargill on a two-year deal after he was released by Forest Green Rovers. The 27-year-old, who has a further 12-month option on his Stags contract, was part of Rovers' League Two title-winning side in 2021-22. He was released following their relegation back to the fourth tier after just one season in League One. Stags boss Nigel Clough says Cargill arrives with a "desire" to again win promotion. As well as helping get Forest Green up, Cargill was part of the MK Dons side that won promotion from League Two in 2019. "He wants the challenge of a third promotion from League Two," Clough said. "He's a natural left-footer, who was probably one of the outstanding players 12 months ago for Forest Green when they romped the division." RE: Stags news - themaclad - 03-07-2023 Mansfield Town chief executive David Sharpe has left the League Two club to focus on family business interests. The 32-year-old was appointed in September 2020 after five months as their director of football. Sharpe previously spent three-and-half years as Wigan Athletic chairman after his grandfather Dave Whelan stepped down from the role in 2015. "David leaves the club with our highest esteem and gratitude," Mansfield owners John and Carolyn Radford said. "He has an exceptional reputation as a first-class operator within football and we've been privileged to get to know a man whose integrity, decency and values have shone through in everything he has done for the club." Carolyn Radford will now replace Sharpe as CEO, having vacated the role after nine years when he was appointed. Mansfield reached the League Two play-off final in 2021-22, but lost to Port Vale at Wembley. Last season, they finished eighth in the table, missing out on a play-off place on goal difference only. "Seeing us reach a record of 5,000 season ticket sales in my last few days at the club gave me a huge sense of pride and joy," Sharpe said. "I truly believe the squad we have built together over the last few seasons, with a few more additions during this window, will see the team in a very good place this season and the seasons to come. "League Two will be more competitive than ever this season but I am very confident everything is in place for it to be a very successful one for the club." He added: "Family will always be the priority in my life and whilst I am devastated to leave the football club, working for the family business is a priority right now and I can't look past that. "I'm proud of what we have put in place together at the club over the last three years and whilst I was always craving that promotion, I firmly believe this could be on the horizon very soon." RE: Stags news - themaclad - 03-07-2023 Mansfield Town have "agreed in principle" to sign goalkeeper Christy Pym from League One club Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with the Stags, making 45 appearances in all competitions. He began his career at Exeter City and, following his move to Peterborough, had a loan spell at Stevenage in the second half of the 2021-22 season. Peterborough say the deal will be "rubber-stamped in the coming days". RE: Stags news - themaclad - 17-07-2023 Mansfield Town have signed full-back George Williams on a one-year contract following his release by League One club Cambridge United. Williams, 30, can also play in central defence and his deal with the Stags has an option for a further 12 months. He helped Barnsley win promotion from League One in 2016 after being signed from non-league Worcester. "We're very pleased to get the final defensive piece in place," said Mansfield boss Nigel Clough. "He's got good experience and has spent most of his career in League One. "He's played with a number of our players before at his previous clubs, who gave us a good reference of his character." The Stags start the new League Two campaign with a trip to Crewe on 5 August, having finished eight last season, missing out on the play-offs on goal difference. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 03-08-2023 Mansfield have signed defender Aden Flint on a one-year deal, following his departure from Championship side Stoke City earlier this summer. Flint, 34, returns to his native East Midlands with the Stags, who finished eighth in League Two last season. He ended the 2022-23 season on-loan at Sheffield Wednesday and helped them win promotion to the second tier. "It's been in the pipeline for a few weeks now and I'm looking forward to getting going," Flint said. Flint spent time in non-league with Pinxton, Alfreton and Matlock in the early part of his career before moving into the Football League with Swindon Town in January 2011. He played almost 250 games with Bristol City, and also had spells at Middlesbrough and Cardiff in the Championship before joining Stoke. RE: Stags news - themaclad - 25-08-2023 Leicester City have loaned defender Lewis Brunt to League Two side Mansfield Town in a season-long deal. The 22-year-old centre-half has played four senior games for the Foxes since joining from Aston Villa, including two Premier League appearances. Brunt has been a regular at under-21 and under-23 level for Leicester and previously played on loan at National League North side Gloucester City. "We saw Lewis play a few times last season," boss Nigel Clough said. "He acquitted himself well. He's the best player we could get at this stage and we needed someone in defensively to cover the injuries we've had in the last few weeks." Stags lost centre-back Alfie Kilgour for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon earlier this month while Callum Johnson [hamstring], Hiram Boateng [groin] and Aaron Lewis [calf] have also struggled with knocks. |
