Saido to Liverpool?
#11
Whatever happens with Saido I just pray there is a new man in to break up the clique rather than Irvine who will sign more Baird's and Dorrans'.

Pulis in, Alan and Downing out, ship out one of Mozza/Dozza, tell Baird where to go, sign Joel Campbell on loan, bring Gamboa and Blanco in to the fold = perfect window regardless of what happens with Saido.

If only it was that easy.

But it's not.

There's a lot of people who seem happy to see him go - I don't get it.

He is the only player we have who can put the ball in the net. The main reason he
hasn't scored in recent weeks is because he's been dropped.

Against Arsenal and QPR, he was a crossbar away from scoring. The latter made
himself in a game where our midfield stopped playing at half time. Against Villa he
came on and created the only goal after we looked completely impotent again.

Yes, he missed a couple of chances in the the 1 recent start he's had, against City.
But his movement was a constant threat throughout.

Yes, the £20m+ is a great fee, but it's no use sitting in JP's pockets when we don't
have a player that can put the ball in the net...

Isn't our next top scored on 1 goal?

We can barely score as it is and now we're losing our only threat.

I couldn't care less with what he does off the pitch (within reason) as long as he
keeps scoring goals at this level. Primarily, I want to see West Brom remain a
Premier League side.

The only way I'm happy with this deal going through is if he stays on loan for the
rest of the season. For me, it doesn't matter if it's £5m, £20m or £50m - if you
lose the only player who's capable of putting the ball in the net in January, you're
going to end up in deep sh*t.

Never said it was, but there has to be a massive shake-up yet again in January or we are doomed. Not ideal but that is what happens when the club is run and managed by people with no idea.

Well said Slick; without goals you're never gonna win matches - or even draw them, with our defence. We need a threat and that means we need Saido - or another gem who can take his place. Obviously the jury's still out (to put it mildly) on Mr Ideye Confused

I don't know if people are happy to see him go, just accepting the inevitable and if it is the case that he has said he wants away I doubt we will get any better than £23m with his pending court case etc. (Anyone heard any more? Did he not have to surrender to his bail in December?).

My only fear is the deal might be £10m and Wisdom.

The club said only recently he may leave to a club with Champions League potential Sort of rules out Tottenham and Liverpool

I would love him to stay, assuming he was focused, spoke lovingly of building his career at The Albion and was currently first pick and scoring goals.

Sadly like so many players of his age, he has started to believe his own press and is in a total mess. I don't know, but I guess he is becoming a little arrogant. Add to that he has a court case hanging over his head and no matter what people around him might say this must be a huge pressure when a possible prison sentence could be dished out.

If we had a larger squad and our strikers were scoring goals, we could let him relax and work it all out - investing in him for the future.

Sadly we don't but another club might. If they will pay 20m and let him take a back seat for a while then its best for us and him.

Unfortunately, even acknowledging the possibility we could end up regretting it for a long time to come, my hopes that we can turn Saido into a mature and reliable goalscorer are fading, and £23m is big money to us. It's one of those horrible decisions you get in football which could backfire and make a chump of you either way, and you've got little better than educated guesswork to go on.

If we keep Saido, he might suddenly grow up with good man-management, bang in goals left right and centre for a couple of years and then go for twice his current mooted price. Then again, he might turn into a sulky misfiring mess who we'd be lucky to get rid of for a couple of million.

If we let him go, he might turn into a superstar we'd forever regret selling. Or he might hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, fail horribly and then do a runner for a foreign league, while we laughed all the way to the bank with our £23m.

We can't see the future, but I'd suggest that one of Albion's mistakes in recent seasons has been to try and keep "key" players at all costs rather than taking good money when it's offered and re-investing to keep things fresh. Part of Swansea's success story has been down to the dosh they got for the likes of Joe Allen and Scott Sinclair; players their fans were probably sorry to see go at the time, but were replaced with even better talents.

With our recruitment department's recent record, I'm not especially confident we'd re-invest the £23m wisely - that's definitely cause for concern - but in principle, I think that cashing in and trying to improve a stagnating side isn't inherently a bad idea.
