Agreed on the football front - best since at least France '98, if not further back into the mists of time - but when it comes to the hosts, please don't lose sight of the fact that the reason the tournament is going so well, with "lots of smiles", is because the whole thing is a PR exercise for Putin's regime, just as the Sochi Olympics were. The funny thing about authoritarian thugs is that they never have trouble getting the things they want to be seen in front of the cameras, and the things they don't want to be seen far, far out of sight.

The trouble with VAR picking up cheats retrospectively is referees will stop doing it on the spot - otherwise its a great idea. If a player did it twice in a game he could go off happy with a win and find out later he'd been sent off and banned.

What do you do with a player who attempts to win 4 decisions by deception? Send him off twice retrospectively and effectively ban him from the tournament?

Good point that, Devon. Cricket umpires have stopped calling no ball since the technology came in. So yes, they would never call a player for diving anymore.
