Wouldn't it be great to get a job like this? Win, lose or draw - in about 18 months Hughes will walk away with several million quid. He will argue "the board would not back my ambition" and he'll move on to someone else. Some Southampton fans might even feel sorry for him.
When Pardew gets the bullet he will walk away with a similar amount. Just how many houses, Aston Martins, BMWs you could buy with, say £5m? All for a bloke who, not for one moment, has appeared to know what he is doing at the club.
Then compare it with the money paid to stars of the past like Bassett, Pennington, WG Richardson, Arthur Rowley, Allen,Barlow, Hope, Brown  and Jeff Astle. Even allowing for inflation Pardew get miles more than all those great men together for a lifetime's service.

When I started watching football Ronnie Allen - who would walk into this current team - was playing for England as well as us. He still took on a part time job selling insurance to improve his income.

Now we've reached the era of £200m footballers. How much further can this insanity go?

Absolutely spot-on, Alouin.
We've got it in our veins - but I hope that soon kids will get sick of it all and go and watch non-League stuff instead. How long before Man City fans get bored with it all?

Can’t help thinking this is a good appointment for us. It’ll not make any difference to our fate but it does mean that he’s not available for us to appoint

Another useless British Manager on the failed merry go round.

You might have thought that the Southampton directors would have learnt from our mistakes.

Appoint a failing Manager sacked by his previous Club(s) and what have you got.????
Some days I'm top dog, most days I'm just the lamp post.

The British merry-go-round continues.

It's no coincidence that the bottom five teams in the Premier League have all changed their managers this season and all have gone with the "Experienced British" managers. Only Southampton can be absolved given the change has only been made his week. Only Everton have done ok with a British appointment in Allardyce and they are now struggling and under-performing.

Swansea, Leicester and Watford went with foreign coaches and they have done well because of it. Hopefully the end is nigh for the myth that British Premier League Experience is important because it isn't anymore.

Look at Albion. We could have gone with Óscar García who was interested in the job. Instead we went with Alan Pardew and look what's happened.
