Is there an actual Law that prohibits someone calling somebody else "Fatso"? or "Ginger"? Are kilts and Irish jokes still ok? (Some Irish comedians would be out of work if that were so). I know sombreros were banned from a Students' carnival because one Mexican "snowflake" in Guadalajara was "offended".
"Snowflakes" with halitosis are really enjoying themselves, feeling superior to the common man. Strip Shows are closing down, because the strippers are offended, and ventriloquist dummies are banned by one midget snowflake.

I don't mind any of the above at all, but I just wish I knew, in case I upset some "Dingle" who doesn't like me taking the piss.

I am actually aware of the situation you mention talksaft and it is not at all as it was printed in the 'Daily Fail' that the University banned sombrero's as they are racist.  The truth was that during freshers week a Mexican restaurant attended an event at the university which was attended by local business's (basically we're here use us) and they were giving away sombreros to the students.  However the Student Union who organised the event has a policy which states companies visiting the university are not allowed to give away items, which re-enforce racial stereotypes, they were not saying don't wear them or that wearing them was racist, just you can not give away freebies which carry on a stereotype.

I think this is where much of the problems lie,  newspapers are there to make money and so sensationalise everything they think will sell them more papers and the truth be dammed.  Its the old adage if they were writing a piece the bloke who f**ted in the pub and by the time the paper came out he'd would have s**t himself.  Smile

So why don't the Students Union just make a bit of an exception in this case, rather than look like a bunch of twats? I bet even some of the right-on, I'm-more-caring-than-you, Students are embarrassed by the sombrero rule.
Stereo-types? They're having a laugh. I bet these small-minded Students are going to demonstrate against the Welsh national dress at Twickers this evening. IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME.

Jay Rodriguez will appoint a lip reader and leading QC as he prepares to fight the Football Association's charge of alleged racist abuse.

Rodriguez, the West Brom striker, is determined to clear his name and is categorically denying the charge made by Gaetan Bong, the Brighton defender.

Cameroon international Bong has alleged that Rodriguez said "you're black and you stink” during a confrontation between the two players in West Brom’s 2-0 win at the Hawthorns last month.

An FA statement said that Rodriguez "used abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race".

Rodriguez has been left stunned by the allegation and is ready to use a lip reader to prove he did not make a racist remark.

The 28-year-old has until Friday to respond to the charge but will request a personal hearing as he bids to avoid a potential five-match ban.

West Brom are fully behind their £12m summer signing and committed to backing him through the process.

There is no PC here, JR either made a racist comment or he didn't, if we start justifying racism by saying its just PC gone mad we take a huge step backwards. One person making such a comment to another is not really that different to when thousands used to do it from the terraces to 3 of our players. Now I am not saying that PC is not a little loopy, but that's a different issue.

PC may become an issue in this matter, if (when) it is proved JR did not make the comments Bong claims and the FA do not throw the book at him. Smile

You're dead right, Salop. If a player makes such a remark to another he knows the rules. But, by the same rationale,

you shouldn't call a redhead 'Ginger';
you can't call so-and-so 'Ladyboy',
you can call Sammy Lee 'Fatty' (because he can do something about his size).

What I don't get (seriously) is why a bloke such as Bong should go crying to the ref, like the fat kid in Infants School.

I'm hoping that Bong just made the most of some grey areas in order to get the player sent off. Only he and JR know the truth, but JR will unfortunately be scarred for a long time.

I've got full faith in Rod Regis. Wink so soon after losing his Dad. Wink

Bong story does sound suss to me, however it does have to be investigated. My concern is if it is proved Bong lied they do not throw the book at him, from JR's prospective a label of racist sticks whether true or not, also it sends a message that lying about being racially abused will not be tolerated any more than actual racial abuse itself.

The issue with the 'friendly' names, such as fatty and other 'pet' names we may call our friends and they laugh is, you don't know whether that person is laughing just to fit it. We see the devastating effects of something like calling people fatty can have with some children ending up committing suicide after all their self worth is taken from them. Being born in 1960 with olive skin, as my dad was Italian, I know what it is like not to be able to walk down a school corridor without a slap round the head followed by comments of Jai the Jungle Boy pretty much 5 times a day every day for my 5 years of secondary school. Believe me it is true people do accept the comments and laugh them off, as they want to fit in, but it does not mean that the comments hurt any less. We have come on a long way since when in 1964 Peter Griffiths, a conservative got elected to Parliament for Smethwick on the slogan "Want a N***r for a neighbour vote Labour - Got a N****r for a neighbour vote Conservative".

So the FA find Firmino of Liverpool not guilty of making racist remarks to Holgate of Everton due to insufficient evidence. They said the complaint was made in good faith. Wonder if Jay Rod's appeal will have the same outcome, especially as he doesn't play for one of the FA's "Big Clubs"? We shall see. . . .

Yet they have charged JRod on the word of someone else ,like Holgate did against Firmino yet they charge one and not the other

Even though I very much doubt it, just maybe the FA think Bong made it up and have charged JR so they can look at the evidence. Alternatively maybe they have looked at the evidence and think they have more of a case against JR.
