WBA Transfer Window - Final Day

I agree Slick, I believe it will be the same old story we have seen in past Windows and we get the has beens or second raters.
What self respecting classy skilful player would want to join us with Pulis in charge? Certainly not any of the top ones.

Sad

Agree with BaggieMan. Anyone one who saw us play last season would know of the lack of service and inability to link up play in attack. No half decent striker or attacking midfielder is gonna want to stand there half the game not getting any ball such as Rondon, HRK, Chadli and co were forced to do. They would have to be very confident in their own abilities to think they could join WBA and single-handedly change the way we attacked the opposition. Its gonna be another uninspiring window under Pulis I fear, and possibly a relegation battle if last seasons form carries on into the new. Sad

Had enough of the window and the rumours already ....... normally excited by the close season, level playing field, the hope, the expectation ........ when the fixture lists come out ...... hope springs eternal for a great start and a great season but after the last two or three years my whelm has never been so under.

This is probably our best set of opening premier league fixtures yet, a chance to really set up our season for a record points haul and confidence building for a cup run but ............... so what, unless something happens soon ....... four players out none in.

I disagree that it has anything to do with Pulis, rather the stigma around the club and our spending history in general.

Pulis seems to have a decent rep in the game and had no problems attracting good players at Stoke; he signed Tuncay, Crouch, Etherington, Michael Owen, Charlie Adam, Ricky Fuller and Nzonzi there. All good attacking players from top clubs. The latter is now one of the most wanted midfield players in the world.

While I'd agree that we're not the best footballing side, it wouldn't matter if we were, we still wouldn't attract anyone. Look at us under Mowbray, we played really attacking football that won plaudits. But signings for the Prem season were predominantly inexperienced Championship players or from Eredivisie and Eastern Europe. The only Premiership player we signed was Scott Carson, because nobody else wanted him (and rightfully so).

I'm far from Pulis' biggest fan but we have to open our eyes and realise that whoever is manager here is working with their hands tied. I remember back when Megson took us up and wanted to sign Roberto Rios from Bilbao and he chose to retire instead. We've come on a bit since those days, but nothing like as much as we should considering the numerous seasons of consecutive Premier League football.

Hope the new owners prove me wrong but it seems a continuation of the 'line your own pockets' running of the club that we saw under JP.

Welcome back, Drewksy. Good holiday?

I don't begrudge JP making a great sale for his own ends, and he only took the salary of a mediocre player. His managership of this Club was 1st rate, and I think many fans of fallen Clubs would love to have a Club run as well as he did over 15 years.

To give the guy his due, he was an excellent business man and considering he's renowned for knowing nothing about football, made some great footballing decisions with his staff choice and handling of many situations. From where we came when he started, it's impossible to be overly critical, but I'll always believe the purse strings were a bit too tight!

Although I believe his salary as CEO, considering the size of the turnover, was pound for pound one of the highest in the world and by far the highest in world football. There were a couple of Prem CEOs with bigger salaries, but at clubs with much superior turnovers. I remember reading a great, incredibly well researched article about him 5 or 6 years back. I'll have to see if I can find it.

But yes, overall, the guy did a good job. I'd agree on that.

So far, the new owners are following suit on the spending style though. We were ridiculously tight last summer and while we did sign Chadli, who was proven Premier League class, it was very much papering over the cracks of a poor window. I remember us scrambling for players on deadline day, only to sign Robson Kanu, who'd been available all summer on a free...

Not a dig at HRK, who has done okay, but he clearly wasn't first choice and probably, considering the lateness of the transfer, not second or third either...

In January we signed Livermore for £10m, but sold Saido for £15, so another profit there...

Not going to complain yet but our squad is paper thin and full of players past their sell by date. Since the last window, we've already lost Fletcher and Olsson, who both played a part last season and never replaced Saido either. The new owner will be judged at the end of this window, but he's not showing any signs of removing the 'cheapskate' stigma that we've held for the last 10 years.
