Hang on a minute, the police are to blame for Hillsborough, no one else. The authorities chose to erect fences not the Liverpool fans, granted fans behaviour in general caused the fences to be erected but it was a fairly primitive response. Hillsborough didn't even have a valid safety certificate!! Sorry but the authorities are to blame solely for the deaths of 96 fans that day.

There were no fences at at Heysel. Authorities to blame for that too?

I don't see how you can blame the whole thing on the police, sure they made some major errors but there were a lot of things that led up to this tragedy happening, many of which had they not happened could possibly have prevented it escalating!! Yes the authorities had the fences put in, and the police and safety engineer turned the Leppings lane terrace into a death trap by adding fences down the terrace as well as along the front, but football fans caused the requirement in the first place, with Heysel being one of the key events forcing the introduction of fences. To me the safety certificate is neither here nor there in terms of causing this, its a clerical issue between the club, safety engineers, FA and city council, but even if it had been renewed it wouldn't have prevented this from happening on that day.

Heysel was the fault of the rioting Liverpool fans, although I don't see what that has to do with Hillsborough, are you saying its divine retribution Theo? Are you saying its payback fir Heysel?
Sorry, Charles but if that gate isn't opened, no one dies, the police simply did not control the crowd properly, inside or outside the ground. Agreed on the safety certificate just making the point it didn't have one.

ART, using your logic, if no-one turned up for the match then no-one would have died.
![]() ![]() Granted, the police response was totally wrong in the circumstances and the 26-year wait for an admission of liability was unforgiveable, but the fans caused the crush, so some blame has to be attached to the fans who caused it.

You have to question the logic of the morons pushing from the back. Where did they think they were going to get? They are the ones responsible. Yes the police were wrong but for goodness sake!
That was the typical football fan back then and I include myself in this category, fooking morons.

Snoots, maybe you have just hit the nail on the head!! The Liverpool fans who turned up late and then proceeded to push to try to get in before the start are maybe not to blame, but should take some responsibility for what happened. Blame is maybe the wrong word, as you say all fans were like that, so maybe blame is too strong a word??
