Looks like the manager's begbie like rant at the weekend had the desired effect. A firm boot up the hole was administered and the team 'got the message' We were the better side tonight and could possibly have put the game to bed by half time. Everyone knew their job,the team looked 'up for it' and put in a real shift but we played a lot of decent fitba too and jason and big grant holt never gave the hertz shaky back line a moments rest.
Shinnie had a tremendous game even though he wasn't meant to start. He had a hand in the first 2 goals and supplied a thumping finish for the third. I think the boys a decent player although i know some of you fellas aren't convinced. After the match the manager talked about 12 cup finals coming up in the league, and how this 'enigma' of a team is going to have to find more consistency. He sounded like he was loving it though ! Hertz were awful, had plenty of the ball 2nd half but they were very soft and never really threatened bar a couple of shots second half. Lennon definitely had cathros 'number' the night and knew how to deal with a game like this.... and it showed. Sevco are so awful they could still take 3rd if they get their shit together. I think like a lot of young managers he's just tried to change it too much too soon.

Another observation re hertz from last night - its also highly possible cathro isn't managing the team, coaching it maybe. Somebody from the dugout was up in the directors' box every 5 minutes, taking instructions from Levein. Harry potter was heading for the dressing room before HT where he presumably told cathro the changes to make.
I felt a bit sorry for him afterwards,he looked like a wee student on the touchline compared to lennon - for all his failings he knows how to handle big games and he was literally driving us on from the touchline. Cathro on the other hand seems to not have any real presence about him and doesn't look like he would have much authority going up against senior players. Like I said I felt a bit sorry for cathro.

I listened to Cathro's post match interview on SSN later on and concur with your comments re his status compared with Lennon. He seems to be a decent lad trying to get on in such a demanding role at Tynecastle but it won't be easy with that lack of experience and nous. Re the positive outcome of the match itself, I think Lenny summed it up quite well when he said 'the boys wanted the win more than the Hearts' players'. I'd just add that I thought that more experience of the Derby fixture would be a big advantage for Hibs and that was proved on the pitch in the way the Hibs players pressed Hearts.

I think to be fair that it's one thing to have technical knowledge of the game, but you also have to be able to inspire a team, get your ideas across and let them feel your presence during the game. The players need to know that they are being supported and working with you. Lennon lived every kick of that game, and at the end celebrated like one of the players. The more I think about it now the more I reckon lennons "old school" rant at the weekend was a smart piece of management. |
