Why not just stand there then. Why make an issue by facing in a different direction ?
He isn't expected to sing the words just behave in a non disrespectful way.
Can't see how you can stick up for him ?

I totally agree Squirrel. He should leave it off the pitch then surely. He knows it will upset folk so why do it?

He has been spoken to about this and has promised not to make his views so visible in the future. He is entitled to have them, he does not rant or act like a thug,. In fact he's been quite articulate about his position.
Hopefully this will be the end of it. As far as I am concerned he's entitled to his opinion and so long as he puts a shift in on the pitch he will get my support.

He is entitled to his political beliefs but why bring them into sport ?
If he feels that offended by the national anthem of the country he works in then sod off back to Ireland.
My father is from Eire, have family living in Belfast and friends who did tours in N.I so have toes in many camps belief wise but this is pathetic.
If Sinn Fein have no problems shaking the hand of the queen in the spirit of progress then McClean needs a long hard think.
Get rid of him.

Jesus, how over the top do some of our fans go? Firstly, politics and nationality should not come into club football one bit. National anthems aren't and shouldn't played before club matches and it is the fault of the clueless American's for that - it isn't like we were even representing England when only about 3 of the starting XI were English. McClean has every right to not wear a poppy and should not have even been in the position he was put in before the Charleston game.
What we should be worried about, however, is the fact that he is a player with limited ability and our pathetic transfer policy means that he is all we have managed to bring in for anything like a full pre-season. It won't matter how many people he has offended if we get relegated because we have an ageing squad and can't even compete with the promoted teams for transfers.

It's nothing whatsoever to do with the royal family other than the Queen is the symbolic non-political head of state. The National Anthem of any country should and usually is, respected by anyone who has half a brain.
Obviously, this McClean fellow hasn't got that half a brain and one would presume, if there was a minutes silence held before kick-off and he didn't agree with it, he would be jumping around doing kick-ins. If we were playing an Irish side, would we be happy with our players disrespecting the Irish national anthem?
This man is a trouble maker and should be dumped by the club for bringing it into disrepute.

IMHO it's probably wrong to condemn someone for APPARENTLY doing something. Condemn him by all means if his explanation shows that disrespect, but give him a chance to put his point forward. To disown him and rant about him on the strength of a few media images that could easily be misinterpreted is (IMO) premature.
Or am I missing something?
