I'm sure there were some Wendy players in the 60s got done for this. Or it could've been accepting bribes. They didn't go to jail. Need SCO to confirm or deny this.

Peter Swan and Tony Kay got jailed for 4 months and a lifetime ban from football. That was eventually lifted in 1972, 10 years after the ban was imposed for Swan and after about 7 or 8 years for Kay. Not sure if guilty party 3 David Layne was jailed or not but also banned for several years.

Correct Theo.  All three were jailed for 4 months but in total 10 players were convicted in the whole trial with the longest sentence handed to a player being 15 months.  After the FA allowed appeals against life bans, Peter Swann returned briefly to our first team, Tony Kay had been transferred to Everton before the trial and was an England international who was expected to play in the 1966 WC but never returned to football and David Layne returned to us but never played for the first team again.  

As far as I know there was no money paid to the players to actually throw the game, but they all bet on us losing it, so I suppose its the same ultimately.  Ironically Tony Kay was named man of the match in the game itself!!!  The guy who masterminded the whole thing was called Jimmy Gauld, he was playing the Delroy Facey role in this one and he received the longest sentence out all those who were found gulity and was jailed for 4 years, so Delroy has been let off lightly by this standard!!!!

I knew of the 3 Wednesday players being involved as my dad and Uncle went on about it for yonks when I were no'but a lad. Think they maybe mentioned others were involved but I don't really recall it, but the three Owls brought in their eyes, shame on Yorkshire as well as Wednesday. Remember seeing Swan's first match back on TV (probably YTV Sunday highlights).

Wednesday were the only high profile team involved so those three players got all the headlines. Remember this was back in 1962, the season after we finished runner-up in Division 1 to Bill Nicholson's great Spurs team. Other teams involved included Bristol Rovers, Mansfield, Hartlepool, York City, St Mirren and Walsall.
