The problem is, Pooch, we have to ask ourselves how long Mr Evans is going to be with us. Assuming that a) he keeps playing and scoring goals the way he is at the moment and b) he is acquitted at his retrial, then he is suddenly going to become a VERY marketable commodity. That being the case, the club will have the usual dilemma of deciding between cashing in or keeping him until the end of the season and seeing him go for nowt. What do you think they`ll do? I know what I think they`ll do.
And if the verdict goes the other way (although I somehow don`t think it will) I`ve no doubt his contract will be terminated immediately. Whichever way you look at it, I suspect that Chedwyn bach will no longer be with us by Xmas. I did consider briefly whether he might consider committing himself to a long-term contract with us out of loyalty and gratitude for helping him to resurrect his career, but that thought lasted about half a nanosecond. (I really must start taking the tablets again.)
Being of an optimistic bent, I`ve thought from the start of the season that this squad ought to be strong enough to at least survive comfortably, but there`s no doubt that he is a very thick layer of icing on top of the cake. I still hold to the view that, even without him, we could hope for the top half and it`s great to be top after 3 games - for what that`s worth - but it would be easy to get carried away. I frequently do.
