Ched the Footballer and the pitch - bluepooch - 15-08-2016

Ill start by saying I haven't been drinking.
My thoughts are ..and this is a big statement ...that he could be the best striker we have ever had.Every game he plays for us is a bonus because i think he wouldn't look out of place in the prem .
Already I rate him better than Novak and he has as better all round game than King Jack. The penalty he won reminded me of the sort of pen that Jack would win.
Im trying to think of the attributes a striker should have and Ched has them all.
Strength, holds the ball up ,good work rate ,good in the air,not lacking pace ,has a goal poachers instinct as he showed with his goal on Saturday.
I honestly believe that if his career had not been interrupted he would be in the Premier League now.
Enjoy it while it lasts folks it will be a precious time in the history of the club.
Now to the pitch,
I thought it looked in the best condition I have ever seen on Saturday and I know all pitches should look their best at the start of the season but it really was like a carpet and maybe the club made the right decision in employing a professional pitch company .

Evans was the main reason the Blunts were up the top of League One above us back in the season he was jailed, and conversely his conviction not only robbed them off their star player but I would imagine knocked the stuffing out of the whole squad. Add to that our great run in and a 5 point gap with 2 games in hand for them disappeared completely!!! Of course we were delighted!!

He was well above Laegue One standard then and by the sounds of it could well still be!! I am sure October can't come quickly enough to remove any lingering doubts over his availability for the remainder of the season, but he could just be the "star" you are looking for to get you moving upwards.

I had a look at Bob`s Board yesterday - or was it Sunday; I can`t remember. It`n not something I`m in the habit of doing, but I needed a bit of amusement so thought I`d take a peek.

One or two people who, a few weeks ago, were banging on about the club`s honour being dragged into the gutter by the signing of Ched Evans (it was disgraceful, DA and CT should both resign, etc, etc etc are now apparently having kittens over the fact that we may not be able to hang on to him after October and that we should sign him up to a long term contract! As Jimmy Greaves used to say; `it`s a funny old game`. Or perhaps it`s just people, not the game.

Things look encouraging, but I`m going no further than that at this stage. One swallow doesn`t make a summer, and all that. I seem to remember `things looking encouraging` after we beat Barnsley in the opening game last season - and we all know what happened after that.....

As regards the playing surface, I think pitches generally these days are a different animal altogether from what they used to be. I can remember the days - as can a certain gentleman down in the south-west, I`m sure - when by Christmas a pitch usually had about 4 blades of grass left on it; 1 in each corner. And that included top flight clubs.I saw some good games on those pitches, to be fair, but it`s good to know that a team with our limited means can produce a surface that allows good players to play.

And Ched gets a brace to push you to the top of the table!!  How was his reception when he was subbed at the end??  I imagine all doubts over signing him have been put on the back burner for now, and probably rightly so as the football field is the best place for him to put his efforts.  From what I hear some Blunts are currently wishing their board had shown some balls and re-signed him before you guys did!! Laugh

Weren't Southend bottom before last night? If anything can make losing at Burton bearable it has to be the Blades getting sliced at home.

I am very glad to get carried away with Evans because believe me he is the real deal and Im keeping everything crossed he plays lots of games for us because he will fire us to a very succesful season
Its a good system we are playing at the moment and suits our personnel
Ill put a word in for Nolan and Mcginn who look like two fine recruits

The problem is, Pooch, we have to ask ourselves how long Mr Evans is going to be with us. Assuming that a) he keeps playing and scoring goals the way he is at the moment and b) he is acquitted at his retrial, then he is suddenly going to become a VERY marketable commodity. That being the case, the club will have the usual dilemma of deciding between cashing in or keeping him until the end of the season and seeing him go for nowt. What do you think they`ll do? I know what I think they`ll do.

And if the verdict goes the other way (although I somehow don`t think it will) I`ve no doubt his contract will be terminated immediately. Whichever way you look at it, I suspect that Chedwyn bach will no longer be with us by Xmas. I did consider briefly whether he might consider committing himself to a long-term contract with us out of loyalty and gratitude for helping him to resurrect his career, but that thought lasted about half a nanosecond. (I really must start taking the tablets again.)

Being of an optimistic bent, I`ve thought from the start of the season that this squad ought to be strong enough to at least survive comfortably, but there`s no doubt that he is a very thick layer of icing on top of the cake. I still hold to the view that, even without him, we could hope for the top half and it`s great to be top after 3 games - for what that`s worth - but it would be easy to get carried away. I frequently do.

Unfortunately you are right SaltergateBorn, I used to play in a goalmouth in which I had to be reintroduced to the whole notion of grass at the beginning and end of the season.

Can you remember Derby's great footballing side getting anchored in the quagmire of the Baseball Ground? Pitches aren't all grass these days though are they?

I must also agree the options with Ched were always strange. If he couldn't get back to league level we were facing the wrath and mockery of fans everywhere for even giving him a chance. Now he looks the real deal again, depending on the outcome of his court case, we may have a player we can't afford to keep beyond the transfer window as we have him on a one-year contract. We could offer him an improved two year deal NOW that has no mention of the outcome of his retrial with a release trigger of say £2.5 million so he'd know he could get away in the summer even if he'd put us in the Championship. And that, of course, would betray any principles we have left.

Personally I think sell him to Huddersfield - I want to see Amelia and Snoot's reaction.

Just another thought, what if I am right and we go up to the Championship? Would he be any more likely to stay for a good wedge when we offload SEB? I think if that happened he could well be persuaded stay with us beyond the end of next season. He is good but he's not Premier quality. Who knows - a bit more TV money in the pot for us to spend when we are on tv every other week. Also if his case gets dropped as seems possible, I assume he would get compensation for loss of earnings? A 4 year claim for potential losses and he could ease his money troubles for life and afford to play footy for pocket money ........ and the love of the game of course.
