Without their support the club would go under. You’re right in saying I don’t understand the new rules but I do understand that most fans will interpret the sale of someone like Adam Reach as a breaking of faith and they’ll react with their pocketbooks.
When I say it doesn’t matter what the supporters want I am referring to the fact that this spending limit is being imposed on us by the EFL. It also currently doesn’t matter what DC wants to spend, he too is completely limited by the EFL spending limit. He has shown he is prepared to spend, he has shown that for the past two years but now he is in a position where he cannot spend anymore without the club getting sanctioned. I for one would prefer we keep the likes of Reach and Forestieri, but I would rather see them sold than us being under an extended transfer embargo or god forbid a points deduction.
Lets not forget, it took the club 4 months from April to August to convince the EFL that we even had a plan to get back inline with the rules before they would remove the embargo we were under and let us renew contracts and sign loan players in the summer!!! And before anyone say lets do a Wolves or Leicester or Bournemouth or QPR and buy promotion, the new P&S rules have stopped that as well. Now if you sign a player or players for huge transfer fees and big wages that will obviously put you over the limit the following season, then the EFL have the right to stop the sanctioning of the players registration, so even though you have signed a player, without the registration you cannot play him in any games!! Birmingham fell foul of this until they sorted their accounts with a player they could not play.
We can say all day that selling the likes of Reach shows no ambition, but it doesn’t matter what the ambition is, if you flout the rules you will pay a price and that will instantly kill any chance of achieving any ambition you have. I would rather we reset the numbers for this season and next, and then do what Forest, L**ds and Derby have done and have another 2 year go at it. Playing the youngsters is key to this as they are free players and if like the Blunts we unearth a gem like Brookes then we accept that he may be sold like Brookes was to balance the accounts. Until these rules are changed we along with other non-parachute clubs will be in the same position.
