Well he may not have been popular at the clubs he's played for, but he really doesn't have to be a great player with that throw on him. He's only 22, surely we can do something original with him.
A couple of teams were using long throws to cause confusion in the World Cup and even at that level it worked, but there was nothing on view like Sam. For sure he sounds like a fugee from The Lord of the Rings, and the rest of his skillset might be better suited to playing against elves and goblins, but that throw is something no defender or keeper will relish. Surely we could set up a lot of different moves from it? It is so long that even a throw-in on the halfway line will push a defence far further back than it would want to be, and we do have defenders in Evans, Maguire and Nelson who might score goals if pushed up in such circumstances.
If it were me I'd arrange shoulder massage and physio, for Sam every single day and he'd be practising hitting the angle of the far post and crossbar on a regular basis. It's just a nightmare for a keeper to have to make up that ground and decide whether to touch the ball, or leave it to go over the bar. Let him train with Joe Anyon, it'll improve Anyon's keeping no end.
