I tend to agree, Dancing. We're obviously capable of evo-sticking the Northern Premier with this team!
Much as I want some experience alongside the young lads CO'G has to prove himself better and more effective than those young lads. If Ricky can do the same against league teams as he's shown so far, then that might be difficult.
BUT IMO that both codes of rugby, having come later to the idea of subs, use them far more dynamically and intelligently than ANY football team ANYWHERE. To a rugby team coach having 5 or even 6 potential game-changing forwards competing for places would be an absolute bonus. He wouldn't be thinking CO'G, Dennis and Ugwu will be starters. The plan would be to use the five dynamically in relays to stretch, tire and demolish the opposition. Much as I complain about the sheer size and physical brutality of the current players in Rugby Union that has only become possible because of subs. Subs changed the whole game and its thinking. Football has barely moved in its use of subs beyond the fact there's no need to end up with ten men if you incur injuries. Management is selection-based ........ he doesn't know his best eleven is the ultimate managerial insult. Truth is he shouldn't, he should have options everywhere and be capable of being both reactive and proactive.
I hope we change our forwards during games and our starting selections too. Maybe 60 minutes of CO'G and however the game is going we should be looking to introduce Ricky instead. Rugby teams often sub a prop who has spent the last fifty-odd minutes demolishing his opposite number ...... and you think why ..... but the new man brings something new and is fresh. Fear pervades the management of football, possibly because of the acceptability and regular occurrence of draws compared to rugby. Don't wanna lose rules football. Wanna win is the ethos in rugby.
After last season's no-idea-how-to-win game, I want to see us play football that wants to win. The rules make it an eighteen player game and fourteen of them CAN get on the pitch. I reckon if the seven on the bench were looking to play a positive role in every game and that reflected the management's thought processes that alone would distinguish us from about 89 of the 91 other clubs.
By the way the one thing I can say about McCourt is that he was on loan at Torquay about three years ago from Leicester. Alan Knill extended his two-month loan and praised his attitude and hard work.
That said, his league experience is pretty minimal. But he's young and genuine hopes were held out at Leicester that he might be a player who could break through.
