I see Shane Long has just signed a 2 year extension at Saints.... he's 33 now!
Always really liked him, quick, unselfish, gave 100%, and a good team player, I believe.

Never quite the same after he was hacked to pieces by that thug Hutton, sadly.

Will always think of him as a good 'un for us though

What's all this about Gazza? Obviously the BBC have run out of things to talk about.
I see they're re running the Euro 96 tournament, but Gazza Day? Rate your 10 best Gazza moments? Best English player since God knows when?
Come on!
Pretty skillful maybe but IMO vastly over rated; had the maturity and apparent common sense of a boiled egg. The way they enthused about the goal he scored v Scotland was ridiculous - yup, a good goal but absolutely sensational? Nah.

Or is it just me?

Easily the most naturally-gifted English midfielder of the era between Hoddle and Beckham, and he could have been as big a star as the latter if it wasn't for the constant injuries and his self-destructive streak. A few years ago I re-watched some full matches from Italia 90, and I'd actually forgotten how brilliant Gazza was on the ball during ordinary passages of play. It's a shame he never fulfilled his huge potential, but I don't begrudge people celebrating the flashes of brilliance he did give us.

I thought Gazza was a genius with the ball at his feet, that goal against Scotland wasn’t the best ever but the occasion, opponents and the fact it was Colin Hendry he made a mug of just made it so special!! It was unfortunate that he never played for any of the top club sides, if he had he would have been an even bigger star. Maybe his wayward side meant they stayed away from him??

i am in agreement with drewks
why all this "lets have a gascoigne day"
apart from scoring the goal against scotland, and lets face it my mother could have scored against them
and crying at Italia 90
the guy was a total dickhead, wasted his career associating with hangers on(george best anyone)
trying to think of that guy he hung around with was it jimmy 5 bellies  not sure
and showing up to the raul moat siege(think that was his name)

Yep, I'd agree with that..... but from memory there wasn't too much to beat in the silky skills department for us in that era?!

No one would dispute that his off-field behaviour was outrageous, and contributed to his downfall. But natural skill is natural skill. The famous moment (around 50 seconds into this video) when he took on five Wimbledon players at once on a pitch like a farmer's field sums it up for me. Even when he was surrounded, he never stopped trying to dance his way out, and the ball just seemed to obey his every move.

Damn right I am. He was up against the likes of Robson, Waddle, Barnes, Platt, Ince, Redknapp, McManaman and a young Scholes. Maybe not world-beaters, but no mugs.
