I don't doubt the strength of feeling behind views like those Spirematt expresses, but I still feel the need to point out the difference between Ched Evans and a doctor or carer. A patient is vulnerable and Ched has proved he is capable of taking advantage. I can see why he shouldn't be a doctor or nurse, but he's a footballer. Neither a centre back, nor a fan would be vulnerable even to an unreformed Ched.
It is perfectly normal for people to leave prison after serving part of their sentence. Are they never to work again? There are (quite disgracefully) 80,000 of them at any given time in this country. If Ched were a plumber he could be round your house tomorrow fixing your toilet and your unwary missus ......... that's very je-suis-Charlie but it's true.
The underlying worry that no one voices is that Ched Evans might succeed - that's what most people want to deny him. Success. He could be capable of 40 goals in a season and though everyone (including well-motivated online petitioners) will pretend to be democrats, like our politicians, they will not trust the voice of the people.
If another Oldham came along. The assumption would be that someone with money and a desire for success was foisting Evans on an unwilling club. My contention would be to see what happens. Trust the public actually involved to react as they do. Trust his team to react. Trust the opposition. Trust the club itself and watch the influence of decent people within it. Trust the fans. Even the opposition fans. And see how a human being, which Ched still is, reacts within this maelstrom. Because it won't be made that easy. And if we saw what a club proposes before decrying it we might find it making more demands on Ched than goal-poaching ..........
If Ched Evans career stats were 2 goals for Dagenham and Redbridge and now he was out of jail, Alfreton Town were offering him a contract, no one outside Derbyshire would have heard about it. But Ched was, and might again be a success. A girlfriend almost unaccountably loves him to bits and her rich dad would clearly die for her. But even if all this were denied to him forever, how does this help his victim? She's left to look back on one night when her life was ruined and take satisfaction that he was ruined too? And is this wholly negative process to be given the name justice?
If we're petitioning, how about rallying to give the victim back a profile and the life that were stolen from her?
