Maybe its all in the psyche!
A championship player has the goal of the Premiership, whether with his team or on his own with a transfer. What has a premiership player who is not with a top 6 club got to play for, other than a meagre hope of a transfer to one of the 6. If the later is the case, then, are they going to play for the team or themselves?

Wholeheartedly disagree with you there Josh!! The Premier League might not actually have the best players or even be the best quality football in the world in it but from top to bottom it is far more exciting and competitive than any other European league!! Results like bottom of the table West Ham or Palace beating Chelsea, Huddersfield beating Man Utd etc rarely happens in other European leagues, especially not in France or Spain. Even in Germany and Italy is not a common occurrence!! The gap between the top 6 and the rest has definitely widened but its still wider in other leagues. Plus imo the games tend to be far more exciting in the PL than other leagues, which can often be pedestrian in Spain and Italy!! But the thing that makes the PL the best league to follow is the fact that as each season starts there are at least 6 teams who could win it, no other league has that, they are mostly one or two horse races and while Man City might run away with it this season, there are still those teams out there who will at least think they have a chance to catch them. And on the flip side of that there are essentially 10 or so teams that could get relegated, there is no certainty at either end of the table and that makes it a more exciting spectacle across a whole season.

This isn't so much a compliment to the Premier League as an indictment of what football's become everywhere. A closed shop that's slightly more open than all the others is still a closed shop.

I have to agree that it irritating to hear all the whinging but as irritating as it is it seems to work in their favour in that no-one is talking about the poor results from both teams, they’re talking about the managers having a spat which takes the heat off quite a lot. You’ll notice you never hear from either of them when their team is doing well.

It strikes me as ludicrous that Wales are looking to appoint one of Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Osian Roberts - 2 of them with no real managerial experience and one hardly earth-shaking. Remember the success that Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles made of their managerial careers?

I do remember Charlton having a miserable Player-Manager career with Preston....and also, Nobby at the Albion (ahem)!
I also seem to remember that Billy Wright made a real mess of things at Arsenal. My memory tells me that Arsenal had 4,000 for a League Div 1 game, whether or not there was a big boycott I can't remember, but this would be about mid 60s. (Can anyone confirm?)
