RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - drewks - 06-06-2020 Hey, in that case I've got to disagree with you Ska'd..... more gifted than Bryan Robson?? In my book, 'gifted' means a natural talent, and not just creative ones; Robbo had that in spades! RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 06-06-2020 Not sure there's any objective metric for measuring natural talent, to be honest. Robson was brilliant, but for me, Gazza had an extra spark of genius on a par with Laurie Cunningham. Last night I sat and re-watched the full England vs Switzerland Euro 96 opener; first half, England building down the left, Gazza plays a perfectly-weighted one-touch rabona pass forty yards down the wing for McManaman to latch onto. Insane technique and execution. And it wasn't even one of his better performances. You can't even say he was ahead of his time, because frankly, even the modern England players who have the ability to do stuff like that (e.g. Sterling, Dele Alli) either don't have the confidence, or get coached to play lower-risk percentage football instead. Which is just one of many reasons why England have traditionally struggled to sit at the top table of international footy. But natural skill is natural skill. The famous moment (around 50 seconds into this video) when he took on five Wimbledon players at once on a pitch like a farmer's field sums it up for me. Even when he was surrounded, he never stopped trying to dance his way out, and the ball just seemed to obey his every move. Also a very gifted if underrated player was one of the few players from the Channel Islands to make the grade. Le Tiz anyone? RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 07-06-2020 Yeah, Le Tissier was amazing in his day. Unfortunately he wasn't enough of a workhorse for an England side that relied on graft from forwards. Southampton had the luxury of building their entire side around him, but at international level Le Tiss had to try and slot in to roles he wasn't suited for, trying to add physicality to his game when all he really needed to do was pick up the ball thirty yards from goal and have a crack. RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - drewks - 07-06-2020 Loved Le Tissier! Only ever seemed to be in 2nd gear but a real delight to watch. I suppose that's what Gazza had too (he says begrudgingly!) - the ability to make the impossible look easy..... but he just annoyed the c*ap out of me! RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - wba13 - 07-06-2020 Le Tissier great player but Lazy , Gascoigne great player , Robson brilliant player in his position probably the best box to box player this country ever produced ie I did not see the late great Duncan Edwards. But Laurie was pure genius, his balance his control everything about him was wonderful. We all know why he hardly played for England in today’s environment he would be a 100 mill player and was easily as good probably better than Sterling, Sancho and the kid at Chelsea. But he was around when if you were Black or did not play for a London club Liverpool or Utd, You had no chance of playing regularly for England. When you think about it at that time we had a manager who could not decide who should play in goal for England let alone who was the best Winger and Striker . All this is just my own opinion. RE: OTHER FOOTBALL - Miscellaneous - WBA-Josh - 07-06-2020 I bet BaggieVicar will be along shortly to say that Fergus Suter is the best player that he has ever seen.... ![]() |
