Think selling Smithies is not that much of a loss really, although maybe should have held out for more brass. Could be a useful sell on clause? He has been a good servant, with some breathtaking saves (and a great goal in playoffs), but not always in the right position and sometimes failing to marshall defence properly for set pieces. Although not as spectacular, I thought Simon Eastwood was generlly possibly a safer pair of hands.

I think Joe Murphy should be given his chance, with an older goalie at the latter end of their careeer and thus relatively cheap as backup until one of the academy lads comes thru - but they do need their chance!!

I would prefer to see any available money spent on a couple of fast, hard tackling, reliable defenders and build from there. Fixing a leaky defence gives confidence to the goalkeeper, who in turn gives further confidence to the defense. A midfield confident in their defence allows them to put more effort into getting the ball forward to the strikers, who then at least have the opportunity to score, rather than being spectators . A weak goalkeeper or defence (or both) nearly always causes midfield to draw back to help the defence and results in the old hoofing up to the forwards and vast swathes of the pitch where there are no players which the opposition can exploit.

Sadford fans have discovered already that Nathan Clarke has neither the skill nor the speed necessary for League 1 let alone the championship. Thank goodness Powell didn't buy him.

Deano interview with Oggie
QPR deal for Smithies, £1.75 million but not completed yet (Sky saying it's at medical stage). Butterfield not for sale at this stage. Whitehead was brought in to replace Coady, so obviously something had been in the works for a while there. Club not for sale while he's enjoying being in charge. Academy still not bringing enough quality players through so we'll continue to invest in good young players, improve them and move them on at a profit and a price that is right for the club.

In my opinion we undersold Coady and Smithies but he says the money will be reinvested.

rumor is now that Smithies is staying as he cant agree personal terms

And James Vaughan won't be offered a new contract at the end of the season.

are we surprised , i dont think hes managed a season worth of football all the time hes been here, when hes fit hes probably one of the best strikers in the division ....when hes fit

Not surprised by him not being offered a contract. Surprised at Deano telling everybody though. Can't understand his reasoning on this one. Why say it now?
Is he hoping somebody will pay money for him in the transfer window? Is he just interested in getting the wage bill down? Do we have an exciting replacement lined up with the Coady/Smithies money?

Have to say in this day and age of secrecy surrounding transfer fee and player contracts its refreshing to see a chairman give some details of the coming and goings. But like you Snoots, what on earth can be gained from announcing now that Vaughan's contract won't be renewed at the end of the season?? Hardly likely to inspire the player and if you end up safe in midfield there will be a clamour to play a different player instead of one that is leaving anyway. And what if he stays fit and bangs in 30 goals for you (unlikely I know) that will require a bit of back tracking by the club surely? As I say, I just don't see the upside to announcing that now!!

What can we take from Deans interview and Q&A

Coady sold for less than £2m, the money was used to offset losses

If Smithies is sold then the money will be reinvested in the squad, Smithies is one of our top earners

Derby have made 2 bids so far for Butterfield, not for sale(expect him gone by September then)

Vaughan will not be offered a new contract and he is free to leave if he can find another club.

The loss this season will be £2m

The club is not for sale right now and he has never spoken to anyone about selling up/investing.

Management wanted to keep Gobern, Dean Hoyle said no! (I told you all that in December)

RE: Summer is here! (Alledgedly) Rumours and whispers - jjamez - 19-08-2015

The whole vaughan thing might be to try and fire him up back to his old self and him earn another contract here, if he's fit for 25-30 games then there maybe a chance that hoyle changes his mind but he wont if we only get a few games from him.

On the goalkeeping front, theres a few that are on freebies that could do a job, steve harper and paul robinson to name two.
