MANAGER

Gary Rowett (born 6 March 1974) is an English professional football manager and former player who is head coach of EFL Championship club Oxford United.

As a player, he was a defender, and played in the Premier League for Everton, Derby County, Leicester City and Charlton Athletic. He also played in the Football League for Cambridge United, Blackpool, Birmingham City and Burton Albion. His professional career ended in 2004, through a knee injury.

In May 2009, he was appointed assistant manager to Paul Peschisolido at Burton, and took over as manager in 2012. He was appointed the manager of Birmingham City in October 2014 and served until December 2016. He became Derby County manager in March 2017, and joined Stoke City in May 2018. After failing to mount a promotion challenge, he was sacked in January 2019 and was appointed manager of Millwall that October, before leaving by mutual consent four years later. He rejoined Birmingham City in March 2024 as interim manager until the end of the season. In December 2024, he joined Oxford United.

The Fitness Test

There were a few players struggling with illness during the week, including Andrew Hughes who missed the defeat to West Brom, so they will need to be assessed ahead of Saturday.

Brad Potts has been absent for the previous two fixtures through injury and is likely to be sidelined again this weekend, as is Robbie Brady who’s suffered a rib injury.

Ryan Ledson came off the bench in the last outing and got himself on the scoresheet, so he’ll be hoping to force his way into the starting XI against his former employers.

The U’s

Oxford United recently made the decision to part ways with their promotion-winning head coach Des Buckingham and in his place came Gary Rowett.

That’s a change which has already worked wonders for the U’s who have won three matches in a row and they now find themselves five points clear of the drop.

Rowett has unsurprisingly been pleased with the results he’s managed to get out of his team so far and he’ll be hoping for more of the same at Deepdale where he’s never lost as a manager.

Referee: Ben Toner
Assistant Referee: Mark Russell
Assistant Referee: Sam Lewis
Fourth Official: Thomas Kirk

Ben Toner will referee his first ever North End fixture on Saturday.

Toner, who has been refereeing in the EFL since 2015, has shown 113 yellow cards and four reds in 22 matches so far this season.

LAST MATCH

We started the new year with a bang, as we saw off Derby in a six goal thriller. We started well and took an early lead when Bazza side footed in from 6 yards. Derby then had several chances, mainly from corners but we kept the ball out of the net. Onto the 2nd half and we put the game to bed as first Windass got his goal of the season contender, scoring from 60 yards then Gasama galloped half of the pitch before slotting past the keeper. Derby pulled one back only for Musaba to make it 4 at the 2nd attempt. Derby got another in injury time but by then the game was won.

THE MATCH

Next up and we entertain Millwall at Hillsborough. The Lions are having an OK season, but there form hasn't been the best of late, which resulted in Neil Harris losing his job in the last few weeks. I could see the Lions probably finishing somewhere near mid table, another team good enough to stay away from a relegation fight but not good enough to contend for a playoff spot. Alex Neill is the new boss, taking over in the last week. Watmore is there leading scorer with 5 goals and 1 assist.

  Robins
Posted by: themaclad - 01-01-2025, 22:54 - Forum: Stoke City - No Replies

Stoke City have appointed former Coventry City boss Mark Robins as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Robins, 55, was sacked by the Sky Blues in October after seven years in charge.

He succeeds Narcis Pelach, who the Potters parted company with on Friday just three months after he was appointed.

Robins' first game will be against managerless strugglers Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Caretaker boss Ryan Shawcross, who oversaw Sunday's late win over Sunderland, will again take charge for the New Year's Day home game against Burnley.

Paul Nevin, who had been serving as interim England Under-20s head coach, and former Newport County manager James Rowberry, the Wales men's number two behind Craig Bellamy, will join Robins at the bet365 Stadium, as assistant managers.

After using the job title of head coach for the last three men in charge - Alex Neil, Steven Schumacher and Pelach - the vastly experienced Robins' job title will be manager.

After starting his managerial career with Rotherham United in March 2007, Robins has taken charge of a total of 780 games with Barnsley, Coventry, Scunthorpe United and Huddersfield Town.

'He was always going to be in great demand'
"At Coventry, Mark built something successful with a real identity and longevity," said Stoke sporting director Jon Walters.

"He left the club in a significantly better place than he found it. That's exactly what we want to achieve at Stoke City, and he has all the pedigree and experience to help us do that."

Robins had also been linked with the current vacancy at Stoke's Midlands Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion.

"With a record like that behind him, Mark was always going to be in great demand," said Walters. "So we're delighted that he sees an exciting opportunity to build something special in the Potteries.

"The immediate mission is to climb as high as we can up the Championship table during the second half of this season, whilst also laying foundations for a long-term successful future for our club."

Stoke are 18th in the table, ahead of the Burnley trip, four points clear of trouble.

The Football Association of Wales have confirmed that Rowberry will remain in his role as Bellamy's assistant with the national team.

"Welcoming two assistant managers of such calibre and with such innovative and progressive mindsets in Paul and James is another important part of how we will seek to progress and grow," added Walters.

Mark Robins' managerial record
In his second spell with the Sky Blues, Robins twice led them to promotion, from League Two and League One before reaching the Championship play-off final in 2023, when they lost to Luton Town on penalties.

They then took Manchester United, where Robins started his playing career, to a penalty shootout in last season's FA Cup semi-final before falling away in the league late on as they failed to match the previous season's top-six finish.

Stoke started the season under Schumacher, beating Robins' Coventry on the opening day, but surprisingly sacked him in mid-September to appoint former Huddersfield and Norwich coach Pelach.

However, they won just three times in the 36-year-old Catalan's 19 games in charge and he was sacked after a 2-0 home reverse by Leeds stretched their winless run to nine matches.

Robins is now the club's seventh managerial appointment since their 10-year spell in the Premier League came to an end in May 2018. Since being relegated, they have always finished in the bottom half of the Championship - 16th, 15th, 14th, 14th, 16th and 17th.

"With the proven track record Mark brings to the role, I believe this is a genuinely exciting moment for Stoke City," said Stoke chair John Coates.

"The win over Sunderland, with the way the team competed on the field and connected with the fans, gave everyone a huge boost and provided a glimpse of what can be created at our club."

HTAFC Prediction League 2024/25 Play Offs 2nd leg (Snooty v theo)
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 01-01-2025, 19:31 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (11)

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. However, if you do predict a draw and it's a match that won't be going to a replay, you can get a possible extra point by stating which of the two teams you think will eventually win.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the Twixtmas fixtures and the NYD fixtures.

The second season will start the following week, which is usually the FA Cup 3rd round, finishing on the last game of the League One season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of League One fixtures and bonus matches, hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The random badger is restricted to three goal scorers in any of the fixtures in your group.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

Postponed matches will only count if the match is re-played before the next Matchday is under way. Abandoned matches will be awarded half the points for the score at the time of abandonment, so 1 point if you have the correct result, 2 points if you have the correct score.

Substitute Badger or scorer in one of the Town games:- These will be only be allowed if you change them before the match involved has kicked off.

So we now have a two legged Play Off between Lord Snooty and theo_luddite. The usual rules apply, but in the case of the match ending in a tie, we will have a tie breaker. That will be to predict the total number of corners in the two Huddersfield Town matches during the two legs. The closest wins. If it's still a tie, the winner will be the one who scored most points over the season, which in that case would be theo.

Christopher Colin Brunt (born 14 December 1984) is a Northern Irish former professional footballer who played as a midfielder and is the current West Bromwich Albion loan player manager and interim manager. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the club’s history.[4]

A versatile player, Brunt featured primarily as a left winger, but could also operate as a left-back or attacking midfielder. Brunt started his career with Middlesbrough but did not manage to make an appearance for the first team. He joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 and amassed 153 appearances for the club before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2007, where he went on to feature in over 400 matches.

Brunt earned 65 caps for the Northern Ireland national team between 2004 and 2017. He also represented his country at youth level.

THINGS TO DO ON A WET NEW YEARS DAY IN WEST BROMWICH

The Oak House is a timber framed building dating from the early sixteenth century that is located in West Bromwich, England.

The Oak House was built in c. 1620, and while the original owners are not known, the family most closely associated with it are the Turtons, who were living there by 1634; the Turtons also built brick additions to the rear of the house during the 1650s. The house remained in the Turton family until 1768 when it passed to William Whyley, the "natural son" of John Turton.

It is thought to have taken its name from an oak which stood on the green in front of it and was burnt down around 1800, though it could have been named after the oak woodland that once surrounded the house. The last John Turton advised William Whyley to fell the trees, and in 1768 many were used to make lock-gates for the Birmingham Canal, which was then being built through West Bromwich. Very few oaks remained in 1836. John Wesley preached at the house on two occasions in the late 18th century when it was in the ownership of William Whyley. It remained in the Whyley family until 1837. Following a succession of owners, Reuben Farley (three times Mayor of West Bromwich) purchased the property[when?].

Alderman Reuben Farley was one of the towns greatest benefactors. He purchased the Oak House with the intention of making it his private residence, but resolved to present it to the town as a museum. The leading architects in West Bromwich, Messrs. Wood and Kendrick, were employed with the task of restoring the house. Skilled craftsmanship ensured the outstanding quality of the restoration and the museum was formally opened on 25 July 1898; gardens and a bowling green were also laid out.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the gift, the corporation decided to convert the Oak House into a period house with antique furnishings; the formal reopening took place in 1951.

In 1949 the house was protected as a Grade II* listed building.[1] It became a Grade I listed building on 27 September 2024.[2]

St Johnstone v Hibs - Thursday 2 January
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 30-12-2024, 23:58 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (2)

Hibs travel to the Fair City of Perth to play bottom-of-the-table St Johnstone on Thursday night. We've come a long way in the last month and have to keep producing the goods in our games against the lower-placed clubs. There's absolutely no reason why we can't come back with the 3 points to try to get into the Top 6. No complacency and hard work will be the key to getting our attacking players firing on all cylinders.

Saints, on the other hand, are in a bad position and on a poor run of form and could find themselves cast adrift at the bottom by the middle of January. No doubt they will be determined to compete at a higher level, but that should be the only way they will be dangerous.

Let's get 2025 off to a great start. GGTTH

Huddersfield Town travel to Wigan on New Years Day and then welcome Rotherham United to the Town Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Unlike Boxing Day where we have a very good recent record, New Year's Day hasn't been a very good day for the Terriers over the last few years. We haven't won this fixture since 2017, the promotion season, when we won 1-0 at Wigan with a late goal from Nahki Wells to win 1-0. That was on January the 2nd though. We haven't actually won on the actual 1st of January since 1997, a 2-1 home win against Stoke City when Brian Horton was in charge. Lee Makel and Rob Edwards with our goals that day.

The Wigan game is on Sky Sports+ but if you fancy a last minute decision to go, there will be pay on the day. It's cash only and you have to get a ticket from the ticket office and according to the Town website, there aren't many left. Twenty-six quid if you're interested.

Head to Head

Town lead the head to head with 14 wins to Wigan's 11, with 8 draws.

It was only last month that we beat them at our place, with Ollie Turton, the Ginger Cafu scoring the only goal of the game.

So what's going on down the Wigan Casino? Still managed by Shaun Maloney, the whiney wee toss pot.

Wigan profiles:

James Carragher is a 22 year old centre back, who came through the Liverpool Academy, the club where his dad played for many a year. He joined Wigan in 2017 but having made his debut in 2018 in an EFL Cup tie against Hull City, he's only just made his next appearances this season. That's because he's been out on loan at far flung places like Oldham Athletic and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The spell in the Highlands coming at a turbulent time for Caley and by the end of the season, Jamie's lad had a relegation on his CV.

Town are miles ahead in the head to head with 33 wins to Rotherham's 12, with 18 draws.

It was the Merry Millers who came out on top back in August though. New loanee signing Joe Hodge came off the bench to score an equaliser, but the referee gave a late penalty to them as we all came to realise that Championship officials weren't all that bad after all. Whistle Rolleyes Blush Sick Doh Angry

So what's going on down in New York, New York? Managed nowadays by Steve Evans, the ex Leeds United manager. Laugh

He's been pretty high profile over the years, so there's not much else to say about him. His assistant however, is an ex Town player who has been his number two for donkey's years, ever since 2004 when they came together at Boston United.

He's Paul Raynor and joined Huddersfield Town in the summer of 1985 as an attacking midfielder from Nottingham Forest. He was only 19 when he signed, having been given his Football League debut by Brian Clough. It was Mick Buxton who took him on and furthered his career, although he had to be content with a place on the subs bench to start with. That was in a time when we only had one sub and he came off the bench to score his first Town goal in a 3-3 draw with Carlisle United at Leeds Road, replacing the injured Phil Wilson. Later in the season, he scored twice in a 3-1 win at home to Sheffield United.

He scored twice in a remarkable game in the next season, a 5-4 home win against Oldham Athletic (another one I missed). It wasn't long before he was off though with a transfer to Swansea City in January 1987, where he would go on to have the longest spell of his career, with over 150 appearances. His last appearance in the bright blue n white was again from the subs bench, replacing Julian Winter in an FA Cup replay at home to Norwich City, a game we lost 4-2.

After Swansea, he played for Cambridge United, Preston North End and Leyton Orient, as well as a few months playing in China, before taking a ten year tenure in non league football. This included a player/manager's role at Hednesford Town before he went to Boston and teamed up with Evans. He was still playing at Crawley Town as assistant manager, aged 42, before hanging up his boots as the pair of them moved into the Football League with Rotherham United in 2012.

Raynor then followed Evans around the highs and lows of the EFL, firstly at the Champions of Europe, Leeds United in 2015. Then on to Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Gillingham and Stevenage, before returning to Rotherham towards the back end of last season.

The old place: Millmoor, unlike Leeds Road and Springfield Park, wasn't demolished immediately. It wasn't demolished at all. It's still there and is now back in use for youth and women's football. Here's a tour by drone of the old place, which shows how close it is to the new place.......
