HTAFC Prediction League 2025 Matchday 15
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 13-04-2025, 20:07 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (19)

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. However, if you do predict a draw and it's a match that won't be going to a replay, you can get a possible extra point by stating which of the two teams you think will eventually win.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the Twixtmas fixtures and the NYD fixtures.

The second season will start the following week, which is usually the FA Cup 3rd round, finishing on the last game of the League One season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of League One fixtures and bonus matches, hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The random badger is restricted to three goal scorers in any of the fixtures in your group.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

Postponed matches will only count if the match is re-played before the next Matchday is under way. Abandoned matches will be awarded half the points for the score at the time of abandonment, so 1 point if you have the correct result, 2 points if you have the correct score.

Substitute Badger or scorer in one of the Town games:- These will be only be allowed if you change them before the match involved has kicked off.

WBA vs Watford - Match Thread
Posted by: Ska'dForLife-WBA - 11-04-2025, 19:36 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (10)

Albion fans are certainly no strangers to the wheels coming off at Easter, but with that holiday dragging its heels and the club unusually eager to implode, the bunny costumes have come out early this time round. Now five points off the playoffs, with only a maximum of fifteen available to us if we win every remaining game, it could well be curtains for another campaign by the end of Good Friday.

To delay that fate will require beating Watford when they visit the Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon; a feat we haven't achieved in eight attempts since December 2016. If we lose, in fact, it'll be four defeats in a row for us for the first time outside the top flight since April 1999. On paper that's unlikely, as Watford aren't exactly on fire on the road, but after the last month you can't really put any mishap entirely beyond us. Yet if the second coming of Tony Mowbray is to have a future through the summer and into next season, we could really do with a lift right now; it might not put us back in playoff contention, but a little hope goes a long, long way.

Burton v Town 12-Apr-2023 5 wins from League One Football - again
Posted by: theo_luddite - 11-04-2025, 15:24 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (24)

Now before we start, this is only the 2nd time we've played at their's, and I also bagged the thread last time. Didn't realise it was as far back as December 2016 though. How much beer has been filtered through the collective kidneys for recycling by the Water Treatment Companies since then to add to the decorative scenes on our river banks and beaches?

If you want a history lesson on beer, in Burton in particular - here's the link to that old thread https://www.sportsbabble.co.uk/showthread.php?tid=4823

Not all the pics and links have stood the test of time, I don't use Google images anymore for a start, but if you've 90 minutes to spare waiting for Town to score a goal on Saturday afternoon, there's probably worse thing's on t'interweb to read ..... Whistle

Right, on with the current thread.

Town go down the M1 and A38 to Scandinavian owned (me neither) Burton on Saturday.

Long-serving Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson sold his majority stake in the club to the Nordic Football Group (NFG) in June 2024. NFG UK Ltd is owned by NFG Holding AB of which the ultimate beneficial owners are the individuals listed below. The Club can confirm the following person(s) have a ‘significant interest’ (as that term is defined within the EFL regulations) in the Club:

Johan Andersson
Caspar Callerström
Tom Davidson - Deputy Chairman
Hrafnhildur Eymundsdottir
Per Franzén
Bendik Hareide - Sporting Director now on leave due to family issues, they are looking for a replacement
Erik Karlsson - former NHL puck pusher
Kristian Männik
Carl Martinson
Anders Misund
Linda Olafsdottir
Jona Petursdottir
Bogi Siguroddsson
Kevin C. Skabo - Commercial Director
Olafur Pall Snorrasson
Ole Jakob Valla Strandhagen - Chairman
Ulfar Steindorsson
Mats Zuccarello - another former NHL puck pusher

According to that AI stuff that Google now coughs up, at the time of the takeover ...
Fleur Robinson: Ben Robinson's daughter, Fleur Robinson, was appointed as the new chief executive.
Ben Robinson Jr: Ben Robinson's son, Ben Robinson Jr, will remain an integral part of the club's operations.
Not a pair with significant interest, clearly, but the rest of them apparently aren't short of a Krona or two of whichever country you spend your Krona's in.

In other beer related news/rants.

Since, or even around the time before that previous beery thread, Wolverhampton Brewery (Bonksies, as it's known round here) were on the rampage, buying up usually small cask brewing breweries north, south, east and west. One of them being Marstons that were let's say, of a similar size and at least kept them out of the furrin hands that had been buying up some of Burton's other famous breweries. They decided to name the conglomerate Marstons as they had a "National Brand". Slowly but surely they shut down the family (or slightly larger) breweries from around the country that they'd accumulated and "rationalised" what they were brewing and selling and where it was brewed.

Then along came Carlsberg, makers of one of the most piss poor lagers in the world but don't tell them that, they probably won't believe you. That followed with an anouncement in the alast year or so that Marstons were more interested in the downstream side (pub/restaurants and hotels) than brewing, so handed everything to Carlsberg on a plate (give or take some more Danegeld). Now, given Marston had been selling off or shutting down large parts of it's estate, that came as a bit of a surprise annoument.

Since then, Carlsberg's bean counters have now decided they don't make enough money from certain cask beers, including the flagship Marstons IPA, amongst others, and they would prefer to brew inferior "bright beers" instead (translation - higher margins). They also announced they were closing Bonksies brewery. Noddy Holder was less than amused, as were folk that had worked their most of their working lives.

We seem to have been down this road before haven't we CAMRA and with Carlsberg in particular?

The claim they weren't making enough money from the stronger, more flavoursome cask beers came about mostly because they basically stopped or severly reduced the distribution of them to their pubs, despite these beers selling out as soon as they were put under a pump. Strange, but the micropub's a few hunderd yards from my three nearest Marstons pubs (all about a 30 minute stroll) sell real (cask) ales by the dray load despite having shorter opening hours and being shut 2 days per week. Further more none of them sell the bright piss that Carlsberg and others sell all over the country (including the fake er "Spanish" lager Madri, that was born and er, brewed? maybe, in Wolverhampton and never saw light of day in a Madrid brewery. That's marketing for you).

It's not like Carlsberg don't have form for this over the years. Try and kill a market you are in first, and then decide there isn't one. 'kin lager louts

Taking the extract

.
Made from yeast extract in little factory nestled in amongst all the large brewery buildings. Most of the yeast comes from the nearby Bass Brewery (or did).

More than a few at Town right now who could easily be described as Marmite.

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

Whoever we play up front on their own is probably feeling like they are isolating. Could our lot even pass Covid to them given how far away they are when they lump the ball at them?

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

It sounds like Balker was rested on Tuesday and should be back in the squad on Saturday.

Last time out

Town lost again, this time to Wycombe. Another goalless outing has likely left most of us holding fire on looking up train times and tickets to London in late May. I'm certainly not traipsing over to Burton. I'm more likely to be having lunch with friends in pub in Staffordshire, a few minutes drive up the road for me. Failing that I'll be generating sawdust, pulling up weeds and planting seeds.

Burton got bounced 3:0 at Wrexham. Last Saturday. Orient came away from Field Mill with a 3:2 win, to put them a point below Town.

In the midweek fixtures, Brum cemented the inevitable promotion with a 1:2 win at Pish Posh and Reading won 1:3 at the Shrews.

The Sack Race

Southampton's defeat at Spurs and subsequent confirmation of the earliest ever relegation from the Prima Dona League meant it was goodnight from Ivan Juric on Monday. They still need a point to equal Sheffield United's worst ever points total. As bad as we were in our 2nd season, we weren't this bad and hadn't spent anything like as much money either.

Tables, Form & Stats

Town's defeat left them in 8th place, 4 points adrift of Reading in 6th. Nothing but wins will do now for Town and even that might not be enough.

[Image: IF6bwxc.png] [Image: kPJMdkT.png]

Burton only got 5 draws (and 8 defeats) from their first 13 fixtures. Thier first win was in November at home to The Shrews. 2 more defeats later they had their next one at Pish Posh. Their next 8 games brought 4 draws and 4 defeats before the final draw against Crawley sparked a run of 3 consecutive wins and two more draws. A defeat at Brizzle was followed by two more wins and a draw at home to Mansfield. You can see the rest of their results above. After being dead certs for relegation before the New Year, they are now in with a sniff of staying up, though they don't have an easy run in with Town, Exeter, Brum (could be on the beach by then), Cambridge, Wigan and finally Charlton to play.

Burton v Top 8 Town v Bottom 8

Innies and Outies

In the Summer Transfer window, Burton set a new British record for players signed in a single transfer window. A total of 10 midfielders, eight defenders, four forwards and one goalkeeper arrived.

Across the two transfer windows, Burton have brought in 30 new players in a vainglorious bastard attempt to stay in League One. That was working so well they sacked manager Mark Robinson in December and replaced him with Gary Bowyer. 31 have gone in the other direction including a chap with the intruiging name of Mustpha Carayol. He has since been signed and dumped by Exeter and he was signed last month by Wealdstone. Bowyer was responsible for about 8 in each direction. In the January Sales, he was responsible for this lot, amongst others.

He has at least dragged them kicking and screaming off the foot of the table, including a draw at ours.

Who's banging 'em in

Burton have scored 41 and conceded 59. Not surprisingly (and like Town) they've nobody that's scored double figures.

They can't all win

In the weekend games, Brum can't win the League under their own steam as they are playing Pish Posh at Wemberlee on Sunday in the EFL Trophy Final. Wrexham (at Wigan) and Wycombe (at home to Stevenage) both take part in the early kick-off's. If Wrexham don't get 3 points, then even a draw would almost certainly hand the title to Brum, given the goal differences. A defeat and Brum are on the beach. Wycombe need to win to keep up the chase for 2nd.

Stockport are home to Rotherham, Charlton are at Cambridge in the battle for 4th and 5th. Reading are at Northampton who will be looking to hand out another bloody nose to a top 8 side. Bolton, like Town have become consistently inconsistent again and will be looking to win at Barnsley whilst Orient will be looking for more points from a trip to Crawley just in case Reading, Town and Bolton all decide to phone the rest of their results in. Blackpool's trip to Brum has been postponed for some reason. You mean, Brum can't field two sides in one weekend? With all their brass?

Down amongst the deadmen, The Shrews will be relegated if they lose at Lincoln. Cambridge, Crawley and Burton already mentioned above, and all looking for Brizzle to continue their 5 game losing streak as they sit 3 points above Burton on the trap door. Northampton and Wigan are 7 points above Burton and are almost safe.

We've played 'em before

Only 3 times as alluded to above.

Back in 2016 the Chumpionship Table looked like this going into the game at Burton.

Wonder what happened to all those clubs then?
Wonder what happened to that website I used to use for nearly all my tables and stats?

Next up?

There will likely be interweb in t'pub but no idea about a phone signal as it's up t'back end of beyond for Staffordshire even though it's only 15 minutes from where I live. When you're in good company and conversation, it's best to leave your phone in your pocket (unless they all disappear at the same time for a few minutes).

  Hibs v Dundee - Sunday 10 April
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 10-04-2025, 23:58 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (2)

Hibs welcome Dundee to Easter Road on Sunday with a (big) score to settle - the 4-1 defeat in mid-November at Dens Park. That all went wrong when Jordan Obita got himself sent off with a stupid tackle. Now that Hibs have transformed themselves into a totally different team with roughly the same players, they should be confident enough and strong enough to claim the 3 points in the last game before the split.

There's one big problem in all of this. Dundee are fighting for points near the bottom of the league. They have beaten two of the Top 6 in recent games and led Rangers right up to the 80th minute in a 3-4 defeat. No doubt Simon Murray will try to run us ragged and be a thorn in our flesh. And there will be others willing to do the same.

Paul Heckingbottom will provide a team news update in his pre-match press conference.

Leeds United

Leeds United sit at the summit of the Championship with five matches to go, albeit just two points separate the top three.

Daniel Farke’s side have spent the majority of the campaign in and around the automatic promotion spots and will be desperate for a return to the Premier League, following Play-Off heartache last year.

Leeds have been the strongest team in the division on home turf this season, taking 49 points from 20 matches at Elland Road and losing only once in that time.

The Officials

Referee: John Busby
Assistant Referees: Mark Russell and Matthew Smith
Fourth Official: Lewis Smith

John Busby, who took charge of the reverse fixture at Deepdale, is the main official on Saturday.

Busby has refereed four North End matches already this season. In total this campaign, he’s shown 83 yellow cards and two reds in 27 matches.

LAST MATCH

We threw more points away as Blackburn came from 0-2 down to get a point. We saw ourselves 0-2 up at the break after we opened the scoring following a corner which was headed back across goal and Valery headed in from close range. Charles did have to make a double save from Blackburn's only chances before we doubled the lead before halftime, Musaba getting down the right and pulling back for Gassama to turn and fire into the corner. Onto the 2nd half and Blackburn quickly pulled one back from a corner which Charles at fault. We never really got going in the 2nd half and Rovers equalised with 5 minutes to go as Cantwell crossed and Ohashi guided it home.

Twerton 18
Amelia 16
Themaclad 15
A.A.A. 7
Zinman 5
Minizin 3

Definitely a table of two halves this week in Group A, top 3 scoring well and the bottom 3 having a week to somewhat forget. Plus we had a first in the history of the league as far as I can see, but more on that later!!

Twerton’s rollercoaster ride continues for another week, this time he moves again from bottom back to the top of the table, this time with 18 points!! He got a spot on Gamball, the only player to score positive points on it this week and backed that up with one more CS but missed on his bonus. Amelia continued her pretty good recent form with 16 points, she got a max on the Bonus plus scored on multiple other games. League Leader Themaclad was third with 15 points, he managed 3 CSs but missed on all his balls to keep his score lower than it could have been.

Big gap to the bottom half where AAA finished with 7 points, he managed to get 2 CSs but missed on all his balls. Zinman ended with 5 points, he did get one CS but not much else. Last place this week goes to Minizin whose run of poor form continues with just 3 points. He did manage one CS but as i alluded to above he played his Bonus and Scoreball on the Manc derby, so due to getting his prediction wrong and it ending as a 0-0 draw he managed to end that game with -4 points, never seen that before!!!

308 Themaclad
279 Twerton
271 Zinman
258 Minizin
210 Amelia
203 A.A.A.

A couple of positional changes this week. Themaclad keeps his decent lead intact but is now ahead of Twerton who jumped over Zinman into 2nd spot. Minizin is solid in 4th but now there is a bit of a gap between him and 3rd spot. Amelia has once again jumped ahead of AAA, but both of them are now over the 200 point mark. Still enough points available for a few changes but the playoffs are looking set from a Group A perspective.

Cheers

Group B

SCO 15
BaggieOne 11
Stairs 5
Snooty 5
BBB 5
Derby 3
Lady Jane -3

A second consecutive week of 7 wrong gamballs, just one positive bonus but at least everyone scored something on the scoreball.....though not necessarily in a positive way. This week also saw SCO equal the season's highest number of correct scores and Lady Jane become the 2nd player to fail to predict a single correct result....and as those 2 players were occupying the 2 top spots in the league, things may have just become very interesting!

Fresh from grappling with Trump's economic incontinence, SCO gets some light relief as he heads this week's table. He scored on 5 games and got 4 of them spot-on. Unfortunately the 5 he got wrong included the gamball and bonus so his overall total was lower than it might have been. BaggieOne scored on just 3 games, 2 of them correct scores, and was the only player to collect from his bonus ball to see him comfortably in 2nd spot.

The next 4 players all got 3 correct results and 1 correct score....unfortunately Derby played his scoreball on the Manchester Derby to end up 2 points worse off and prevent a 4 way tie for 3rd place. Lady Jane had a nightmare failing to predict any matches correctly though she did at least pick up the scoreball point to save herself from a total wipe out.

266 Lady Jane
261 SCO
240 Derby
236 Stairs
215 BBB
205 Snooty
186 BaggieOne

So, no positional changes this week but after months out on her own at the top of the table, Lady Jane is under severe pressure from SCO who now sits just 5 points behind her. With just 4 (5? - see below) weeks left until we get to the play-offs, can she hang on to top spot?

So, for Easter weekend, do you want 1 or 2 sets of fixtures - the split may be fairly arbitrary with games being played on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday?
