Southampton vs WBA - Match Thread

On the tide of a three-game winning streak, Albion are borne down to the south coast on Saturday for a tough clash with relegated Southampton; the first time this fixture will be played in the Championship since the match that saw the Baggies promoted under Tony Mowbray in 2008. Indeed, in the modern era we've rarely met at this level beyond that two-season spell in the 2000s and another in the 1970s; you have to go back to November 1948 for the last time Albion beat Saints in the second tier. Happily, we've managed it reasonably often in the top flight, though Southampton has long been a problematic venue: victories at New Year 2016/17 and in spring 2013 are our only two triumphs in the last twenty-six attempts at both St Mary's and the Dell, and it doesn't promise to be any easier this time round with our opponents currently unbeaten in seven.

If there's a ray of hope, it's that the Saints haven't kept a clean sheet at home all season; it has, in fact, been over eight months since they last managed it. They rely on the likes of Adam Armstrong, Carlos Alcaraz and Che Adams to outscore opponents in an attacking 4-3-3, and for the most part it's been working; early autumn hammerings off Sunderland and Leicester and a 4-4 draw with Norwich in August seem to have been put behind them. But equally, Albion are no less transformed from the side we were a couple of months ago, and have shown an ability to go toe-to-toe with teams like Leeds and Preston on their patch. If it comes to the worst, after our recent results we can probably afford to take one on the chin this weekend, but a point would be a real boost going into the fortnight break.

The (whatever Hull Telecom are calling themselves this season) Stadium
Ooop's it's now a Builders Merchants, MKM - since 2021, 'ood a thunk, eh?
Not really that near 'ull Docks
'Bit nearer than we are tho'
'Bit of a walk from Boothferry Park (now a housing estate)
and The Boulevard (now a school)
Not to mention 'ull Station.

That there's a few people in "important jobs" in this country that maybe need reminding of that and what it actually all means says a lot about them and how fit they are to do the job they are charged with (and well paid for) doing.

Royal British Legion

At the end of a week when both Arsenal and Man Utd's Manager's (Head Coaches) both go into meltdown regarding VAR (and about time too), Mad Nads is flogging a dead horse (aka, her fictional book about her hero Blo'job Bodgit, though she's had more air time on The Beeb this week than she ever spent in her Constituency) and our Home Secretary is trying to bring a war in Palestine/Israel to and remove "life-style choice tent people" from The Streets of London, Town head down the M62 to our east coast "neighbours", Hull ([Image: music.png] we only sing when we're fishing [Image: music.png]) City.

There's more.

I accidentally deleted the draft of this thread just before posting and somehow or another recovered it, but some links may or may not work and you may or may not get some oddball pop-ups saying things aren't right or whatever. Just go with it. I can't track down and fix all the problems (yet) as I haven't a list of what the problems are.

Now, if you were rational, you wouldn't pick a fight with a fisherman's wife down there, let alone one of the lads off the docks either if you were sober, so don't even think about it if you've had a couple of wobbly pops before or after the game. Hell, when I played rugby as a kid, their U16's were the size of a trawler and the forwards were even bigger. Must eat more fish!!

The Beggars Litany is so called for a good reason.

They ain't got one of these in 'ull though.

OK it's ovver t'ill in my home town, but great for taking the head and tail off a big lump of cod. Thumb up
Just mind your fingers.  Whistle

Not that there's much fish landed at that there 'ull these days either as Brexit has pretty much put paid to what was already a precarious livelihood with EU fishing quotas. Apparently, it's easier and cheaper to land and sell a catch in Denmark now than in that there 'ull and try sell what we don't need into Europe. Another Brexshitty bonus. Thumb up

Overnight ferry to Rotterdam? No problem, just don't forget to shout "Ajax" afore you disembark and go looking for them there diamonds.
No I don't mean Hackney Diamonds either.

This is going to be one of the few games this season where Managers/Head Coaches of a skin colour that ain't white will pit their wits and teams against each other.
It shouldn't have to be said, but Liam Rosenior v Darren Moore is one helluva different match-up to "the norm" in this country.
Hmmm. Given how many play the game, mostly with some skill to boot, it's really rather pathetic really.

Tickets, depending on which bit of the stadium corner you sit in, are £20/£24 and are cheaper still for us old 'uns. For appoximately £100 more you can treat yourself to a 4 course meal, a programme, a parking space you might get out of by 6pm and you still have to buy your own booze. Well who wouldn't want a £100 fine dining experience instead of a £10 half-time pie and a pint? The (probably really only worth) £4 fish pie is put on a plate with parsley sauce, mushy peas and chips and you get to use proper cutlery. Joy. Cup-a-soup starter, banana and cream for dessert and a cup of tea/coffee to finish. Hell, can't wait. £100? Cheap at twice the price. Oh, and you get to see the match too, sorry, nearly forgot that. Doh

On the tellybox?

Not showing anywhere at the moment other than iFollow (abroad) and some 'dodgy stick' links.

Latest news

It's still raining, on and off (really?).
Some of the culverts and drains have been cleared so we've not had too many floods, yet, but thanks to global warming, most of the leaves are still on the trees, so we've still got all that joy to come too.

Former Town backroom supremo, Stuart Webber, who was credited with bringing David Wagner to the club, and was more recently credited with bringing David Wagner to Norwich, has left a month earlier than his 6 month "agreement" was supposed to let him leave Norwich.
He is due to turn up at the other end of the A62 in L666s anytime soon. 'oood a thunk eh?

Good to know that the top 6 Prima Donna League clubs are now starting to realise that VAR is a farce that needs officials who know what they are doing for it to work properly. Previously it only worked in their favour for the most part, so they didn't moan. Of course having 3 officials (or is it 4?) anywhere near the pitch knowing what they are doing is another matter entirely. The other two (or three) in the dark room in a car park in Bletchley (or are they in a Range Rover with pull down blinds and an iPad?) need to co-ordinate who is going for a pee, who is boiling the kettle and who is making the tea/coffee and opening the next packet of biscuits in my opinion. They all seem to miss or ignore the bleeding obvious at the same time for some reason. If we improve things a bit, FIFA might start inviting more of our refs to officiate at World Cups again. Don't hold your breath on that one.

That said, the ref we had last weekend, Sunny Singh Gill, following in his dads footsteps as one of the few South Asian refs in English Football, was having his first game at our level. He maybe let a few things go he shouldn't have but was otherwise more than capable than many I've seen at this level and tried to let the game flow, if two teams that couldn't string three passes together could ever create flowing football that is. That the Town supporters boo'd him for not letting us take a corner 7:45 mins into the 7 mins added on, when we only seemed to realise how shit Watford were after 85 mins, should not detract from his performance.

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

How many of the missing 11 from last weekend will have been to Lourdes this week to drink the holy water from plastic Jesus shaped bottles and made a blessed recovery?
We'll have to see in the pressers.

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

Hoggy will be back from his 1 game suspension, to collect another yellow card no doubt. Harratt will be back from taking his hare coursing dogs to the vet, (apologies if it was a more serious matter) hell, we might even fill the bench this weekend. Scoring a goal might be another thing. Winning? Yeah, OK. For miracles, see the section above. We're playing in 'ull, not Lourdes.

Last time out

With a much patched up squad and only 6 on the bench we bored Watford (or they bored us, they were just as bad as us really) into a 0-0 draw.
The first 0-0 draw between the teams and the first draw this century.
I did bring this to your attention before the game and if you didn't bet your mortgage on it, don't blame me.
I didn't bet on it either if it makes you feel any better. I don't have a mortgage to lose any more either.

Hull went to WBA and managed to lose 3:1. Really? How? West Brom fans, see that thing about answers on a £5'er below?
Answer as you feel necessary, I could use the £5'ers.

L666s continued their winning ways and stopped the winning ways of Leicester last Friday. Wayne Rooney's Brum finally dragged one point from the jaws of three when they let Ipswich score twice in the final throws of their game. Brizzle won one of the games of teams under (or looking for) new managers, Rotherham and QPR played out a 1-1 draw that was almost as nail-biting as our game v Watford. Norwich continue to plummet down the division after hammering us. Now just 2 points above us, go figure, eh?

On Tuesday night Rotherham finally managed to play Ipswich in the game that was flooded off the other Friday. It's not been noticeably much drier since, but the ducks had left the car park, quackers if you ask me. The result was a 2-2 draw which puts them 1 point closer to us than on Saturday.

Musical Interlude.

Nowt to do with 'ull really but here's one for our Home Secretary, if she's still reading my threads these days. Whistle

When I was a kid, it was only in London when you saw this, it isn't anymore. It's every town and city plus a few villages.
We have a PM that is "proud of his Party's record with the homeless".
Good to know, what a prat he is. Doh

A couple of years or so back he managed to find the brass on a magic money tree to supposedly get them all off the streets, then the magic money tree suddenly withered and died.
Where did all the money go? Some lass and her hubby that converted bra's into breathing masks for two? 'appen?
'Penny for the Guy, guv'?
I'm sure she'll sort it out when she stops sulking and our next Government's Official Opposition grow a pair and dump all of Farage's phonies out of their party. If I hold my breath for long enough they might just all disappear along with that magic money tree. Then again, we've a country full of feckwits that read and believe the Daily Mail and other similar titles. Ain't gonna happen is it?

The Sack Race

The managerial In Door has been far busier than the Out Door this week.
You won't be surprised to find out that the Manager-Go-Round is once again thin on new talent.

Liam Manning left Oxford on 7th November, but he wasn't out of work for long as, by shear coincidence on 7th November he turned up as the new head coach at Brizzle City. Elsewhere, Joe Edwards has been appointed at Millwall and Bratfud City have appointed former Milton Keynes failure Graham Alexander as their 11th in 7 seasons new boss. This was after losing 1-2 at home to Wycombe in the FA Cup 1st Round on Saturday, so at least he doesn't have that defeat on his CV. Bless. Nor will he have a run to the last 16 on his CV this season. Former Town player Chris Lucketti is his assistant. Well, he wasn't here for long. I can handle it. I think.

Tables, Form etc.

That Plymouth, Norwich and Brum, who have scored 3 or 4 goals each against us are only just above us says something.
I'll let you work out what that something is because I'm blowed if I can.

Innies and Outies

The new(ish) owners on Humberside splashed some cash to get them away from the bottom 3rd of the table this season.
If only we'd have used that strategy at some point eh?
So far it's working, given that they've been in the Top 8 for most of the season.
Will they make a mad (lemming like, I know, long disproved) dash for the top 6 in January? Time will tell.

[Image: h4DdKUw.jpg] [Image: rSTw05e.jpg]

Who's banging 'em in

They can't all lose

Down amongst the dead men, Watford are at home to Rotherham, (another 0-0?) Wendies play Millwall, QPR are at home to Brizzle in a new manager scrap, Coventry are at home to Stoke in what is labelled as a West Midlands derby, but they are almost as far apart on the M6 as we are from Hull on the M62. (60 miles v 70 miles).
It will take Stokies about an hour to drive home after the other hour it takes to get out of the car parks.

We've played 'em before

We're a squirt in front and haven't lost to 'ull for a few, will it continue? Answers on a £5'er please, usual address.

Players Pontifications - REG

"The clean sheet was really important for us and it's a platform for us to build on. Hopefully we can get something tomorrow.

"There's a lot of work on the training ground. We worked hard on our defensive shape and it showed on Saturday. As a defender I was buzzing to get a clean sheet and I think the whole squad was to be fair. Obviously you'd rather win but you take what comes.

"Hoggy has big boots to fill so it was a privilege to step in. I've not played as much as I would have liked to this season but I'm always ready to step in for the team. He tries to guide me and help me and give me advice whether he's playing with me or if I'm playing instead of him.

"I do see myself as a centre-back. I've played there most of my career. But I've been playing defensive midfield for a while now and I can add it to my traits. There's good competition for places at the back but everyone who's playing there is doing well.

"At the moment it's about what the team needs and I'll always give 100% wherever I play.

"I try to do more after training to try and get my fitness up, having not played as much as I would have wanted to. I need to keep doing as much as I can. I've taken it on and want to try and improve on it and try and finish 90 minutes. All the actual work is only going to benefit me when I play.

"I've been on loan a few times and just want to try and secure a spot here now because I've been here a long time, I've come through the academy, and I just want to give back to the club who took a chance on me.

"I take everything as a learning curve and I think I'm ready for anything that comes my way.

"We're expecting Hull to be a possession-based team but we want to disrupt that and show our strengths and try and get three points."

PS. I had some bloke from Wolves FC knock on my door this week about joining their £1,000 per week charidee draw. Sound familiar?
I pointed him in the direction of the sticker in the back window of my car. He suddenly scuttled off next door. Laugh
Doubt he got much change off them either and though he's from Wolvo, she's a Liverbird.
I didn't hang around to see who answered, but it's rarely him. Former local pub DJ of many years standing, he's as deaf as a post now anyway. Yow wot?  Whistle

Sooooo, to this weeks big pre-match questions that really matter Big Grin

1). Haddock or Cod?
(Apologies to any Veggies that are reading this, but deep fried Mars Bars are not an option this week). Whistle

2). Chips or Mash?

3). Mushy Peas or Garden Peas?
(Beanz are an alternative option, with or without the peas. Must get your 5 a day.
That's another rant for another day).

4). Parsley Sauce, Tartar Sauce or Chip Shop Curry Sauce?

5). Newsprint or polystyrene?

6). Cup of Tea with Bread and Butter or a Pint/Half/Bottle of Your Fave Beer/Lager/Glass of Wine/Fizz?
Coke/Pepsi etc. don't count, sorry. Next. Soft drinks full of sugar? Pah!! Kids stuff.

7). Apple Crumble and Custard or Ice Cream with a Wafer (or a Flake)?

8). Indoors or Out? (Batting off the seagulls as required).

9). Where would you pay £100 for that? Exactly. Cool

What do you mean brown sauce or red sauce? That's the Sausage Sandwich game. Laugh

  Hibs v Kilmarnock - Saturday 11 November
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 10-11-2023, 15:02 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (2)

Hibs welcome Kilmarnock to Easter Road tomorrow in what is becoming a must-win for the Hibees with the international break coming up.

We have lost late goals in 4 matches this season, turning a draw into a loss and wins into draws which have cost us points, points which have potentially dropped us 4 places in the table. In some of the games, circumstances have conspired against us, but in others we have been the authors of our own misfortune. Nick Montgomery has a mammoth task in front of him, perhaps more than he realised.

Derek McInnes will not be most popular person inside Easter Road on Saturday, so let's make his visit as difficult as possible by sending him away without any gifts or points. Our recent form against Kilmarnock is pretty good, but statistics mean nothing unless backed up with positive performances.

  Breaking new ground
Posted by: themaclad - 10-11-2023, 13:30 - Forum: Wealdstone - No Replies

Wealdstone have announced plans for a new 6,300 capacity stadium, which they hope will boost their English Football League "ambition".

The National League side have been allocated an 18-acre site in west London by Hillingdon Borough Council.

The Stone's current Grosvenor Vale home in Ruislip holds 4,000.

"[The stadium] will play an important role in safeguarding the future of the club and supporting its growth," said club chairman Rory Fitzgerald.

National League pushes for more promotion spots
Wealdstone are currently 17th in the National League and have never reached the EFL.

The semi-professional club's plan for the new stadium "incorporates high-level operational guidance from FIFA and UEFA and utilises best practice precedents from stadiums around the UK and Europe".

The English Football League and a field of dreams
The Freezeland Way location is 2.7 miles from their existing home and adjacent to Hillingdon Underground Station.

No time frame has been given for the work to begin with the club still arranging funding for the project, which will in part come from the plan to build residential and commercial property on the site.

"The new stadium is fantastic news not only for our fans and players but the whole local community," Fitzgerald continued.

"As we progress, we will ensure that we optimise the benefits for local residents while also working to minimise and mitigate any potential environmental impacts associated with a construction project of this size.

"In addition, we are confident that the security and growth potential offered by the new stadium will help us attract the investment we need to realise our ambition of one day playing in the EFL."

Wealdstone also hope their current home venue will remain part of the long-term plans and the club is in discussions with the Grosvenor Vale's landlords.

  Prediction League Week 12 Results
Posted by: St Charles Owl - 09-11-2023, 21:06 - Forum: West Bromwich Albion - Replies (2)

Premier League

Zinman 11
Blue B 11
B.B.B. 8
Derby 7
Lady J 2
Minizin 1
Stairs 1
Dingle -1

Clearly with these results it was another tough week of predictions in the PL. Wasn't the worst week we have seen but was certainly one of them!! The Gamball was a complete washout with everyone getting it wrong and the Bonus didn't fair much better. Overall there were only 7 CS predictions out of 80 games predicted and inevitably with 3 0-0 draws there were a couple of players who lost that point on the Scoreball!!

Zinman and Blue top the table this week with 11 points each. Zinman was one of the two to score positive points on the Bonus and BlueBaggie was the only player to get 2 CSs, this at least got them into double figures!! BBB continues his decent form in 3rd place with 8 points, he scored a max on the Bonus, a rarity for him, but wasn't able to build on that with much else. Derby rounds out the top half with 7 points, he is Mr Consistent this season.

Big drop to the rest though with Lady Jane next with 2 points, missed on her balls but did manage a CS with a rare 0-0 prediction. Minizin and Stairs both ended with just one point, Minizin got no CSs and Stairs was one of those with a negative on the Scoreball for predicting it on a goalless draw. Scary stat for him is that over the past 6 weeks he now has just 10 points in total, one less than this weeks leaders!! Dingle keeps riding the proverbial rollercoaster, up one week and down, he must be feeling sick by now but this week he ended on -1!!!

134 Derby
134 Zinman
129 Minizin
126 BBB
116 Blue Baggie
114 Lady Jane
111 Stairs
82 Dingle

6 positional changes this week, I think thats a record within itself!!We now have new leaders in Derby and Zinman, who both overtook Minizin. BBB stays 4th but is now only 8 points off the leaders, Blue moves up a spot at the expense of Lady Jane and Stairs drops another place to 7th, with Dingle so far behind him he might finally be able to catch his breath and find some form!!

Cheers
SCO

Championship
Snooty 9pts
Sanjay 5
SCO 5
AAA 5
Themaclad 5
BaggieOne 5
Twerton 0

Statistically a draw is the least likely result in football matches and most of our predictors seem to know this as they steer clear of predicting too many draws. Unfortunately this week's selections bucked that trend with 6 of the games ending level and as a result the Championship scores were not great - in fact this week produced the 2nd lowest total points so far, nobody achieving double figures and a total blow out on the bonus ball. Three fixtures ended nil nil but surprisingly everybody avoided these games when choosing their scoreball so nobody lost points on it.

So just 3 positions in this week's table - first, last and everyone else! Snooty and Twerton were the extremes and the only players not to score 5 points. Snooty got 4 correct results including the gamball, not a great return but enough to sit comfortably top of the table. Twerton managed just 2 correct results and missed out on all his balls so failed to add to his season's points haul. The rest achieved 5 points via various routes - all got 3 correct results with just BaggieOne failing to turn one of them into a correct score, though he made up for this by being the 2nd player to score on the gamball. SCO became only the 2nd player this season choosing not to playthe gamball, wisely in this case as it saved him a point.

AAA 122
Twerton 118
SCO 117
Snooty 114
BaggieOne 92
Themaclad 88
Sanjay 61

Just the one change again this week, and it's the same one as last week as the top 2 switch positions. It's closing up at the top with just 8 points separating the top 4.

BaggieOne has now gone 6 weeks without a correct score, just 1 more to match Sanjay's run earlier in the season. This was the second time that nobody scored on the bonus ball - a ball that has now cost the Championship 27 points with only Twerton, AAA and Snooty (just) showing a positive return from it.

LAST MATCH

A ten man Wednesday (wrongly as we now know) couldn't hold on for a draw as we went down to Bristol 1-0. Bannan was shown the red card 30 minutes in and it was a backs to the wall effort. We survived the rest of the first half. Onto the second half and Iorfa had a chance but his header was saved. Bristol took the lead when Dickie headed in from a cross. Bristol then hit both posts as they tried to put the game to bed. We had one last chance but unfortunately it fell  to Fletcher and the keeper saved it.

THE MATCH

Next up and Millwall make the journey north. The Lions are struggling of late, no wins in there last 5 games which has them currently lying in 18th place. They have a new head coach, Joe Edwards, previously an assistant to Frank Lampard, who took over from Gary Rowett who left by mutual consent in October. I think they will stay clear of the relegation dogfight and probably finish nearer to mid table. There leading scorer is Flemming with 4 goals and 2 assists.

Bristol City have appointed Oxford United boss Liam Manning as head coach.

The 38-year-old succeeds Nigel Pearson, who was sacked last month with the club 15th in the Championship after a run of five losses in his last seven games.

Manning leaves Oxford second in League One and three points behind leaders Portsmouth after 15 matches, having spent just eight months in charge of the club.

He has previously managed Milton Keynes Dons and Belgian side Lommel.

"This is a terrific opportunity and one that I'm really looking forward to," Manning, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Ashton Gate, told the Bristol City website.

"If you look at the vision of the club and where they want to get to and how they want to get there I think there is really good fit and alignment with my journey and where I want to get to."

Manning 'a great fit' for Robins
Manning, who will be assisted at the Robins by his number two at Oxford, Chris Hogg, has impressed since succeeding Karl Robinson as U's boss - the club were 18th in League One and three points off the relegation places when he took over in March.

He kept Oxford up last season thanks to two wins in their final three matches, before masterminding an excellent start of this season which has seen the U's lose just two league games since the opening day of the season.

"Liam is a great fit for the club and the style of play we want", Bristol City Chairman Jon Lansdown said.

"He has a very detailed approach to coaching, improving players and getting the best out of them as his record at MK Dons and Oxford United shows.

"As soon as we made the change Liam was our first choice and we are grateful to Oxford United for the extremely professional way they have approached the departure of someone who was doing a fantastic job for them."

U's begin managerial search
Oxford chairman Grant Ferguson said the U's had "reluctantly" given Manning permission to speak to Bristol City, adding that the club did "everything it could to keep him".

Chief executive Tim Williams added: "I am hugely disappointed. However, we have already begun the process of securing the best possible candidate to replace Liam.

"This is a fantastic club with great training facilities and an exciting future - I have no doubt we will have huge interest in the role."

First-team coach Craig Short will take on the role of interim head coach for Oxford, and will be assisted by academy coach Chris Hackett.

After taking over from Russell Martin at MK Dons in August 2021, Manning led the club to a third-placed finish in League One, before being knocked out of the play-offs at the semi-final stage by Wycombe Wanderers.

He lost his job in December last year after a run of one win in his final 11 league games left the club second-from-bottom.

Manning a 'summertime fling' - analysis
BBC Radio Oxford's Oxford United commentator, Jerome Sale

A week ago, Oxford United had won at Lincoln and were back to within three points of the League One lead and all seemed well on and off the field.

Seven days later and the league position hasn't changed, but there is turmoil. The fact that Liam Manning has jumped ship just 241 days into his tenure as head coach leaves supporters sore - and judging by Oxford's statement - plenty inside the club too.

But Manning's short time was transformative. He's taken them from a struggling relegation-threatened team to one that look serious promotion contenders.

United are absolutely correct that the field of potential replacements will be deeper for a top two side than a bottom six one.

Though the needs and immediate ambitions are different this time, they would do well to stick to the same processes that so successfully led to Manning's appointment. I say that even though it turned out to be little more than an intense summertime fling rather than a long-term relationship.

  Joe Edwards
Posted by: themaclad - 07-11-2023, 10:41 - Forum: Millwall - Replies (1)

Millwall have appointed former Chelsea and Everton assistant coach Joe Edwards as their head coach.

He was in Frank Lampard's backroom staff at both Premier League clubs and has been in interim charge of England Under-20s since August.

Edwards, 37, takes over at the Championship club from Gary Rowett, who left by mutual consent on 18 October.

Millwall are 18th in the table, having picked up just two points from four games since his departure.

Rowett held the position at The Den for four years, guiding them to top-half finishes in each season, but was unable to secure a play-off berth.

The south-east London side had been considering former Southampton and Luton boss Nathan Jones for the role, but Edwards will now take charge of the team for the first time at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Edwards has brought in Andy Myers as his assistant while Adam Barrett - who had been caretaker manager after Rowett's departure - and fellow coach Andy Marshall will stay on as part of the backroom team.

"Although I have been coaching for a long time, a lot of people will be aware that this is my first job managing as head coach," Edwards told the Millwall website.

"Throughout the years, at various levels, you think you would like to have the opportunity to make the step up.

"To do it at a club like this, to be head coach of Millwall Football Club - I don't take that lightly at all. I'm really excited."

'Innovative' coach with 'positive ideas'
Joe Edwards in his time with England Under-20s
Edwards has not managed a senior men's side before
Edwards spent 27 years at Chelsea at all, turning to coaching aged 16 after not being kept on by the club as a youth player.

He worked his way up to become Chelsea Under-18 boss for a two-year spell form 2014, where the Blues twice won the FA Youth Cup.

He moved into the senior setup and became an assistant to Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, helping the Blues win the Champions League in 2021, before moving to Everton in January 2022 to link back up with Lampard.

Edwards went on to became England Under-20 boss on an interim basis this year.

"With Joe, I'm excited. He is somebody who I think is very innovative and has some positive ideas about the progression we can make as a club," Millwall chairman James Berylson told the club website.

"It was a thorough process, with no stone left unturned, and Joe was engaging, attentive, and impressive throughout, and I felt that we could have a productive working relationship together.

"We welcome both Joe and Andy to The Den with open arms and look forward to seeing the impact they can make on and off the pitch throughout what we hope to be a long relationship with Millwall."

May the Lord have mercy on their souls

League Two side Bradford City have appointed former MK Dons head coach Graham Alexander as their manager on a contract until the summer of 2026.

The 52-year-old had been out of work for only three weeks after being sacked by the Dons on 16 October.

He replaces ex-Wales boss Mark Hughes, who left Bradford early last month.

Alexander previously managed Fleetwood, Scunthorpe, Salford and Scottish club Motherwell, who he guided to a Europa Conference League place in 2021-22.

"It is really good to be here. I am excited about the role, the potential of the team and club," he told the club website.

"Joining a club, you have to look at the short-term improvements you can make, but also look at the potential of what you can do. Here, for me, that scope is endless."

Hughes had led Bradford to the League Two play-offs last season but was dismissed having won just three out of 11 games this term with the club in 18th position in the table.

Kevin McDonald took over on a temporary player-caretaker basis and won his first three games before losing the next two.

Former Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley had been in the frame to replace Hughes but ruled himself out of taking the job because of family reasons.

Having been appointed by MK Dons in May following their relegation last season, Alexander's tenure at the club lasted just 16 games into the 2023-24 campaign.

MK Dons made 11 signings during the summer transfer window and Alexander steered them to four wins from their first five league games as they topped the League Two table.

A sharp drop off followed, culminating in his short stay with the club coming to an end last month.

He moves to the University of Bradford Stadium with former Bury boss Chris Lucketti as his assistant and the Bantams in 16th in division.
