HTAFC Prediction League 2024 Matchday 1
Posted by: Lord Snooty - 01-01-2024, 21:46 - Forum: Huddersfield Town - Replies (16)

2 points for correct result
4 points for correct score
2 points for each correct scorer
Correct joker doubles your score   Laugh (correct score on a joker would give you 8 points)
Wrong joker result gives you minus 2
Correct Random Badger gives you 2 points Badger

The random badger Badger is used for any random prediction used once in each matchday sequence. For instance, a scorer at a particular match, the number of red cards in the matches or yellow cards or own goals or owt you want really within reason, I do need to be able to check whether it's correct or not. Please don't put stuff like....."Commentator says...."  Rolleyes
The joker  Laugh is played for one match in each sequence and if correct you get double points. So if you've predicted 1-0 and it finishes 2-0, you get 4 pts, but if you've predicted 2-0, that's 8 pts. But if you get it wrong, it's minus 2.
Jokers and badgers are optional. You don't have to play one if you don't want.

The prize for winning the league is one rep point.

Cup games: In the event of a draw, it's half the points if you've predicted a draw when it gets to 90 mins and the full points if it's still a draw after extra time. Half the points will be awarded for correctly predicting the winner of the match if it goes to penalties. Similarly with the badger, if your random prediction is affected by this, it'll be half the points.

Random score generator: I will be using the random score generator again for those who miss predicting, so we shouldn't get some people too far behind that after missing a couple of weeks they lose all interest, because I know it's not easy getting on here every week.
To be fair to everybody, this is going to be like, say if three people in one week miss their predictions, the first one in the table will be given all 0-0, the second one down the line will get 1-0 and the third will get 0-1 and so on, like if there's four missing the 4th will get 1-1, then 5th 2-1, 6th 1-2. and if there are so many missing, might as well pack in. Wink
And if you miss two weeks on the trot, I'll stop until you come back on again. Not doing it for half a season like I did t'other year.  Rolleyes

End of season Play Offs: The one who finishes top of the league will still be champion, but after the season finishes there will be Play Offs between the top 4, with 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd. This will take in stuff like the EFL Play Offs, FA Cup Final, final day of Prima Donna League, European Finals etc. It will be one matchday for the semis and one for the Final. It will be the individual scores for each matchday against the allotted opponent, with some kind of tie breaker for a drawn match.

The prize for winning will be enormous. Another rep point. Whistle

So we have a new format for this season, which I put forward as an idea at the end of last season. Nobody offered any objections so here it is explained......

Firstly, I thought it was getting a bit boring towards the end with the league format as it was with the champion being so far ahead and everybody else not much to play for apart from the push for a play off spot, which was a bit of an anticlimax anyway. The most exciting bit was the tussle for 8th, 9th and 10th positions with Shep, Ritchie and Amelia.  Whistle

So I'm splitting the group up into two groups with the top six from last season in the top group and the bottom six in group 2. At the end of the season, the winner of group 2 and the bottom of group 1 will swap places in what is commonly known as "promotion" and "relegation". It's something that most football fans will be familiar with, unless you're a fan of Liverpool or Arsenal or one of those other fashionable clubs.

The second placed player in group 2 will then have a play off with the player who finishes second from the bottom in group 1 to decide whether they will be going up, down or staying where they are.

We're going to have two seasons in one though, just to try and make it a bit more interesting and not so long drawn out. The first season will end on the Boxing Day fixtures, with the play offs being on the dates of the Twixtmas fixtures and the NYD fixtures.

The second season will start the following week, finishing on the last game of the Championship season. Then another period of relegation/promotion play off games, taking in such fixtures as the EFL play offs, FA Cup Final, UEFA finals and such like.

Each group will have it's own set of fixtures. Both groups will have the Town games, with scorers to predict as before. Then it will be a split of Championship fixtures and bonus matches. And not as many fixtures to go at. Hopefully around ten, eleven or twelve games per Matchday.

The rest of the rules will be the same as before apart from the Badger which will still be in use, but I'm going to get arsey about it. Sometimes in the past, I've been able to just award two points immediately because it was such a nailed on thing to happen. Not accusing anyone of cheating. Far from it. I didn't put any boundaries on it, so anything was alright. So now I'm restricting it to three goal scorers in any of the games in your group. Sorry to all our more adventurous badgerers.

Here's how that will appear at the end of the fixture list. All you have to do is fill in the blanks.......

Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***
Badger *** scores for ***

Any of those will score two points if correct. No minus points for getting it wrong.

The joker  Laugh will still be the same as before, ie doubling your points for a correct prediction or minus 2 for getting it wrong.

Postponed matches will only count if the match is re-played before the next Matchday is under way. Abandoned matches will be awarded half the points for the score at the time of abandonment, so 1 point if you have the correct result, 2 points if you have the correct score.

There will be replays in this season's 3rd round, so if you're predicting a draw, no need to put a winner down.

Edit 2: Loads of players are to be soon leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations and also the Asia Cup. Town's Yuta Nakayama is among them, but also the likes of Mo Salah and Heung-Min Son are likely to be missing for the next month or so. For a full list of players not to pick for your badgers, here's a link. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/...e-asia-cup

Day one of transfer window and bad news already. JS been recalled by Brighton! Interested to know what you all think? Personally this couldn’t have come at a worse time imo! He’s a creative player and has a classy strike for goal. As long as he’s  kept fit a real asset we will miss surely?

Monday 01/01/24

Over 20 years ago, Leicester moved out of their old Filbert Street ground to a brand spanking new generic box of crisps style stadium just a few yards down the road. Over 20 years later the developers that bought the old ground have turned it into a small block of flats for stoodents and er, a car park and derelict land. Doh

[Image: 0_006CG_TEM_210319FilbertFilbertJPG.jpg]

Apparently there are now plans afoot to build more stoodent accomodation and a block of, er, affordable flats and some terraced housing.
Affordable to who will remain to be seen.

So, back to the football.

After a record month for dullness in December, according to the Met Office (they must be Town fans too) we are hoping for better things to come in 2024.

is moving into town from the USof A'sville for the whole of January, apart from the bit before he arrives, to mastermind our plan to achieve mid-table mediocrity this season and dominate the Championship in 3 years time. Whoop-de-bloody do. Chalk me up for the "I'll believe it when I see it brigade." He'll be the first Chairman I can remember to "really invest" in the squad if he does. Yes I know Deano spent a bit more than thruppence in his time in charge, compared to others, but he pulled the plug when the going got really expensive, even by his standards. What's not to like Rat-fans? Yeah!

Last time out

Town managed to control the excitement of battering (by our standards) Blackburn by coming 2nd to a Boro side that hadn't won a Yorksha League game up to that point. Generally speaking the performance was deserving of a point at least as both sides put out less than full strength starting and bench filling squads due to injuries.

The Foxes continued their march back into the Prima Donna League by battering(?) Cardiff 0-2 in that there there Wales.

Elsewhere, The Baggies did everyone a favour by beating L666s, but down amongst the deadmen Rotherum drew with Blunderland, Wendies won at Both ends (wtf themaclad?), QPR did me no favours by nilling Ipswich, Wayne's World 11 improved by drawing 0-0 with Brizzle, Smoke drew at Watford.

Music

How's your head today? Went out for a Chinese last night and despite my best efforts with liquid anaesthetics and being home for 10:30, I was still awake at 2:00 this morning. I woke at 7:00 to put the bins out. I'm still awake to do this, fortified with Milk and Alcohol. Passing on much of the local music for this game, can't be bothered to look for any. Just ask Alexa to play Leicester music.

Just when you thought the Uncle Scrooge's in the boardrooms of England couldn't get any meaner, poor old Lee Johnson picked up his 2nd P45 of not just 2023, but this season on the 30th December. Doh Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke Tongue.  They might just be singing when they are fishing in Fleetwood once again. As far as I'm aware, no new appointments, but watch this space.

Rotherham go to Blackburn, who knows? Wendies home to Hull to kick off the 2nd half of The Yorksha League, QPR home to Cardiff. Wayne's World 11 are at L666s, so a good result for us today ....... Nah, we'll be we're we are.

LEFT FIELD APPOINTMENT

Fleetwood have appointed former Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam as their new head coach.

The 38-year-old replaces Lee Johnson who was sacked on Saturday after a run of nine games without a win.

Adam retired in 2022 after playing for clubs including Rangers, Liverpool, Blackpool and Stoke City and is taking on his first managerial role.

He becomes the third boss at the League One club this season following Johnson and Scott Brown.

Adam has been working as a coach with Premier League side Burnley as their loan manager, and also with their under-21 players.

Maurice Ross will also join as assistant coach and former Fleetwood player Ross Wallace becomes first-team coach with their first game in charge at Shrewsbury on Monday.

LAST MATCH

We ended the year just like we started the year with 3 very welcome points. We had the first real chance when Vaulks should have done better with a header. We took the lead when Cads played Johnson through on the inside left and he finished well from 12 yards. PNE had a few chance but didn't test Dawson. Onto the second and Preston nearly levelled but there effort hit the bar. Preston were edging it but we were defending well. Then near the end Byers was given a straight red, if it was for the challenge it will surely be rescinded, unless something else happened that we don't know about. We managed to hang on and reduce the deficit to 6 points.

THE MATCH

Our first game of the New Year sees Hull make the short journey to Hillsborough. The Tigers are having a good season and are currently lying in the final playoff spot. If they can stay there is another matter as there is only a 5 point gap between themselves and 14th spot. There form of late has been mixed with 3 wins and 3 defeats in there last 6  games. They are managed by Liam Rosenior who has been in charge for just over a year. They have several threats, Connelly is there leading scorer with 8 followed by Delap & Tufan with 7 each, Tufan scoring a hat trick at there place earlier in the season

MANAGER

Michael Beale (born 4 September 1980) is an English football manager who is currently head coach of Championship club Sunderland.

Beale played football as a youth, but retired at 21 and became a coach. He worked for Chelsea, Liverpool and São Paulo. After stints working as first team coach with Steven Gerrard at Rangers and Aston Villa, Beale became manager of Queens Park Rangers in June 2022. He left QPR after five months to become manager of Rangers, but was sacked from that role in October 2023.

Possibly on a hiding to nothing replacing a popular manager and having those in the plush seats wanting to pick the team, best of luck on that although after tomorrow

BIT OF HISTORY

In 685, King Ecgfrith granted Benedict Biscop a "sunder-land". Also in 685 The Venerable Bede moved to the newly founded Jarrow monastery. He had started his monastic career at Monkwearmouth monastery and later wrote that he was "ácenned on sundorlande þæs ylcan mynstres" (born in a separate land of this same monastery). This can be taken as "sundorlande" (being Old English for "separate land") or the settlement of Sunderland.[8][9] Alternatively, it is possible that Sunderland was later named in honour of Bede's connections to the area by people familiar with this statement of his.

Who’s Available?

North End were boosted by the long-awaited return of Emil Riis on Friday night after almost a full year on the sidelines, and the Dane is expected to be part of the squad heading to the Stadium of Light.

Fellow forward Will Keane will need to be assessed ahead of Monday after struggling with illness for the last few days.

Jack Whatmough’s injury which forced him off against Sheffield Wednesday will also be checked on before the visit to Wearside, while Robbie Brady’s calf issue is expected to keep him out.

Opposition Focus

Sunderland are still settling into life under a new head coach in Michael Beale, who took over on 18th December, following the departure of Tony Mowbray.

The former Rangers boss got his first victory in charge of the Black Cats on Boxing Day, beating Hull City away from home, before picking up another point on the road against Rotherham United.

They’re in a good position in the table heading into the opening game of the year, sat a place and two points outside of the Play-Off spots.

Match Officials

Referee: Oliver Langford
Assistant Referees: George Byrne and Andrew Dallison
Fourth Official: Dean Whitestone

After taking charge of the draw against Norwich City in December, Oliver Langford will referee his second North End match of the season on New Year’s Day.

So far this campaign, Langford has shown 60 yellow cards and five reds in 17 matches.

Langford, jeez, we are cursed with naf officials after her on Friday

MACS VIEW

Well we are not starting the New Year at Stoke is one consolation, what tactics will Mr Fantastic employ tomorrow to bore the pants off everyone, even Bellingham's brother if he's there would probably wish being in Madrid then watch us
Beale had to apologise to home support after being rinsed by Coventry in his first game
The excitement watching us never ends and the sodding thing is on the box so it is a 6 am get up, the joy, look forward to the steps up to the Gods, lungs have disappeared in the usual Christmas period cold. Can't beat the misery of supporting your club through thin and thinner

  Hibs v Motherwell - Tuesday 2 January
Posted by: ritchiebaby - 30-12-2023, 16:02 - Forum: Hibernian - Replies (4)

Hibs will be welcoming the Steelmen (do they have a new nickname nowadays?) to Easter Road on Tuesday afternoon before the New Year break kicks in. Hibs' recent form has been a bit patchy, with plenty of promise spoiled by individual lapses. This should be a great chance for them to get back on the winning trail with Motherwell going through a worse time, although only 8 points behind us.

We'll be losing Martin Boyle (a definite miss) and Lewis Miller (both good and bad) for the Asian Cup as well as Rocky Bushiri (no great miss) and Jojo Wollacott (don't really know enough about him as long as David Marshall retains the No1 jersey) for the African Cup of Nations. It'll possibly be mid-February before they're all back, so it's an ideal time for some newer faces (and older ones returning) to come into the first team reckoning.

After this game we have 18 days before the Scottish Cup-tie against Forfar to get a better idea of where we're going with new players coming in,etc. Nick Montgomery will definitely have a better idea of who fits into his playing style and who doesn't.

Happy New Year to all Hibees everywhere and look forward to an upturn in our fortunes. GGTTH
