Jeff Astle outjumps Marvin Hinton, watched by Chelsea inside-forward Terry Venables, 2nd October 1965

Our home campaign draws to a peculiar close this week with a Friday night game against Chelsea, courtesy of Sky. Things marginally improved for Albion at the weekend with a much-needed point at Turf Moor, but ultimately it felt like two dropped, and there's not much hope of another win before season's end with a tough crop of fixtures.

Chelsea are looking to wrap up the title in style, and while it would be nice to imagine we could stick a spanner in the works before a home crowd to give everyone something to cheer about, realistically it's probably going to be yet another tough night. All the same, here's hoping for something special.

Laurie Cunningham goes for goal against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, 20th August 1977
Possibly shades of our last home game 2 years ago here, SAF 's final game in charge.  I can see us rising to the challenge again here - if Phillips or Leko are picked to offer some threat on the break - and nicking a point Thumb up
All I can say is thank god somebody has posted something on here
Where has everyone been the last few days ?
I have tried posting on the transfer threads but not much response anywhere,
Come on guys give this site some support
I was trying to think of a way off introducing the prediction league back with a new format for next season haven't thought of one yet Rolleyes
But have Ideas but we really need to be participating on here guys as everything falls down and fails
Oh,....... back to the op a repeat of our 3-0 win the other year with a repeat off a red card as well, this time for Mr Angry (Costa) Whistle
Beefy your hoping, the thug Costa never gets sent off ...... he is virtually untouchable.

Can't really see a win here or at man city so fifty points still s dream ......
Another great action picture Ska'd.

I don't ever remember 'The King' playing in a number 8 shirt but, the other nearer Albion player would appear to be Graham Lovett. Not sure about the third Baggie would have guessed at Graham Williams.

Can't see us getting much from this game. I'd expect Chelsea to go all out to clinch the title; just hope we don't get ripped apart while they're doing it.
Astle was number 8 pretty much week in week out from early 1965 through to late 1967, when he finally made the switch to number 9.
2-1 Baggies. DD Thumb up Thumb up
I'd love to share everyone's optimism about a Friday but I can honestly see no other result than a comprehensive defeat for us. I just think there is nothing in our current form that will worry Chelsea at all, whilst they have a team packed with talent and on great form. Add in the opportunity to secure the title and, I'm afraid, that leads me to being Mr Pessimism.

Pretty sure that's Stan Jones in the background, and Terry Venables looking eager.
I think that was the game when we booed Chelsea for a dodgy substitution. Subs had only been introduced that season (or it might have been the following year) but only for injuries. And a wussy Chelsea player rolled over so they could bring on Joe Fascione, as I remember. I took it out on a Chelsea fan on the bus back to Town!
Ska'd will confirm or deny. Wink

Been on holiday, Beefy - it's always quiet when the all-action, fizzing vicar goes away....
Mind you, my computer has died so I'll only be on for a while when the wife isn't on facebook. Not very often.
The Chelsea game? We're going to get mullered.
