Boreham Wood have appointed Ross Jenkins as their new head coach, following his departure from relegated Oxford City.

Jenkins, 33, takes over from Luke Garrard who stepped down at the end of the season having been in charge since October 2015.

Former Watford midfielder Jenkins took over at Oxford City in January 2022 and guided them to promotion to the National League for the first time in the 2022-23 season.

But the team finished bottom of the table this campaign, winning eight of their 46 games, and were relegated back to the National League South.

Boreham Wood stalwart and former captain Mark Ricketts joins Jenkins' coaching staff as first-team assistant manager after retiring as a player this May, with Lloyd Doyley as first-team coach.

Oxford City owner Justin Merritt: “Ross will always be remembered fondly here as the manager who helped us reach the highest level we have ever played at.

"To keep us in contention for much of last season, despite the obvious challenges in the higher league, was commendable and it is no surprise that he attracted interest from other clubs."

Luke Garrard will step down as Boreham Wood manager at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old has been in charge of the club since October 2015.

He led the club to the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2022 when they were knocked out by Everton having beaten Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon in the previous rounds.

Garrard also took the club to the National League play-off three times - losing to Tranmere Rovers in the 2018 final at Wembley.

But this season the club has struggled and are third-from-bottom, three points adrift of safety with four matches to play.

"This advance announcement is made with a very heavy heart on my part, and because of Luke's service I want his departure to be dignified, respectful and honest," chairman Danny Hunter told the club website.

"That is very important because he should not be remembered for one disastrous season but for his volume of work over so many seasons.

"I remind those amongst us who think a manager should be sacked every time a club has a bad run, that if I adopted your policy Luke would have gone many times and because I was patient and he was supported, we created magic moments, and look over the years what we've achieved together."

Boreham Wood chairman Danny Hunter says he may reduce his investment in the club after a "laughable" crowd of 407 saw their defeat by Sutton on Saturday.

The National League side have averaged 655 fans over three home games so far.

Taking away season-ticket holders and travelling fans, Hunter said there were only 46 paying adult Boreham Wood supporters at Saturday's match.

"I've got to reassess what more I can do, as the town clearly doesn't want to consciously support its club," he said.

"Saturday's abysmal crowd just makes me feel sad, as so much hard work goes into making this club over achieve every year and we just want a bit more support for those efforts."

'Laughable' attendance

Boreham Wood reached the 2017-18 National League play-off final, but fall well below the average divisional attendance of around 2,300 so far this season.

The Hertfordshire club - promoted four times since 2005-06 - introduced a £99 adult season ticket this summer in a bid to increase crowds, but Hunter said it had not improved matters.

"I suppose if you want an excuse, the lower than normal crowd could be put down to 300 adult and OAP £99 season ticket holders, who took up our offer but never bothered to turn up and support us," Hunter told the club website.

"I'm probably just feeling a bit sorry for myself, but 407 as a gate attendance at our level is laughable."

Hunter says he has put £500,000 into the club since February, with a total spend of £1.2m over the summer to build a new stand and upgrade facilities.

"It might simply be the right time to re-evaluate my own ambitions and consider downsizing my year on year investment here and get rid of a few of the white elephants in the room," he added.

Boreham Wood, who sit 16th in the National League after five games, are away to Bromley on Saturday, 24 August, with their next home game - against Ebbsfleet - on Monday, 26 August.
