Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage says more action needs to be taken against the "vile abuse" he has suffered from opposition fans.

Savage's side were beaten 4-2 at Carlisle United on Saturday in the National League and the former Wales midfielder says he was subjected to abuse that "crossed the line".

"I'll take the banter, and when they're singing songs about me as an individual I've got no problem," Savage told BBC Radio Gloucestershire after the loss.

"But when it crosses the line, when it becomes nasty and some of the stuff said is wrong, what's done about it?
He still presents the 606 phone-in show on BBC Radio 5 Live alongside his managerial duties at Rovers and is known for splitting opinions among his listeners.

But Savage, who turned 51 on Saturday, says not enough is being done when people go too far with personal abuse.

"Stewards, volunteers, whoever's standing there, it's [still] allowed to happen consistently," he added.

"I don't mind banter. I've had photos with kids, with youngsters there and I'm prepared to stand there and get hurled the most shocking abuse by people of varying ages, probably in high-powered positions at work.

"They think it's acceptable they can come and hurl vile abuse at a human being - it's not acceptable, but nothing will be done about it.

"It happens all the time, it happened the other night at Worthing and it's happened again today.
"I don't think it's acceptable, but nothing's going to be done, nothing's ever done."

Forest Green Rovers have appointed former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage as their new manager, after Steve Cotterill was sacked last week.

Savage, who played for Leicester, Derby, Blackburn and Birmingham among others during his career, has been managing non-league side Macclesfield FC since 2024.

Cotterill's departure from the National League club was confirmed on Thursday, after the side missed out on promotion through the play-offs last season.

"I feel I have an opportunity to develop a squad to create an attacking brand of football - an aggressive form of football to try and get Forest Green back into the EFL," Savage said in a club statement.

"I want a fast, exciting style but the most important thing is to win games."

Forest Green finished third in the National League last season but were beaten by seventh-placed Southend in the play-offs on penalties, to miss out on a place in the Wembley final.

Savage links up with former Wales team-mate Mark Bowen at the Bolt New Lawn, who was appointed Forest Green's director of football last month. They have not disclosed the length of his contract.

His son, Charlie Savage, also had a spell on loan at Forest Green during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, scoring one goal in 15 games.

The appointment is the 50-year-old's first in management in the top five tiers of English football.

However, last season he won promotion to the National League North with Macclesfield - where he has had an association since 2020 - during his first campaign in charge, with the club clinching the Northern Premier League Premier Division title with six games to spare.

Savage said at the time it would take "an awful lot" for him to leave for another club.

A Macclesfield statement, external said the departure of Savage was "disappointing" but that he leaves with "our very best wishes and eternal gratitude for everything that he has done for our football club".

Savage won the first of his 39 caps for Wales in 1995 after beginning his playing career at Manchester United, although he failed to break into the first team at Old Trafford.

He went on to play more than 600 games across the EFL and Premier League in a 17-year career, which began at Crewe, before he signed for Leicester in 1997, where he played more than 200 games and won the League Cup.

He played for Birmingham before joining Blackburn in a deal worth £3m in 2005 and ended his career at Derby in 2011.

Aged 45, Savage made a brief one-game comeback for non-league outfit Stockport Town in 2019 but has predominantly been working as a media pundit.

Forest Green Rovers have confirmed the departure of head coach Steve Cotterill after the side missed out on promotion from the National League.

Cotterill's exit was reported earlier this week, following an 18-month spell at the helm.

The 60-year-old guided the Gloucestershire club to third in the table last season, but they were beaten by Southend United on penalties in the play-offs to miss out on a place in the Wembley final.

"Steve Cotterill and FGR have parted company following the club's decision to terminate Steve's contract. We wish Steve all the best for the future," a statement said.

Cotterill was appointed in January 2024 with Forest Green in the midst of a turbulent period, becoming their third boss in one season following the short tenures of David Horseman and Troy Deeney.

They were rooted to the bottom of the table when he took over and while there was an uptick in form during the spring, it was too late to save them from the drop and they returned to the National League last season.

Cotterill oversaw 22 wins through 2024-25 as they sought an immediate return to the English Football League.

But they fell off the pace behind Barnet during the season and had to face the play-offs, where they fell one match short.

Cotterill said afterwards that he wanted to stay next season to "build" on what the club had done so far.

Former Wales international Mark Bowen was appointed as Forest Green's director of football on 10 June, with the club having been without one for much of Cotterill's time in charge.

Bowen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire following his appointment that he was "looking forward" to working with Cotterill.

Forest Green will now be looking for their seventh manager since June 2022, following the exits of Rob Edwards, Ian Burchnall, Duncan Ferguson, Horseman, Deeney and now Cotterill.

Struggling League Two side Forest Green Rovers have appointed Steve Cotterill as their manager.

The 59-year-old replaces Troy Deeney, who was sacked on 18 January after six games in charge.

Cotterill takes over with the club rooted to the bottom of League Two and facing a battle to preserve their English Football League status.

The Gloucestershire club have not won in their past 12 league games and are six points from safety.

Cotterill has a wealth of experience across the EFL and most recently managed Shrewsbury Town for two and a half years, leaving in June last year.

He spent five years at hometown club Cheltenham Town early in his managerial career, taking them from the Southern League to the Football League for the first time in 1999.

Cotterill also won promotion with Notts County and led Bristol City to the League One and EFL Trophy double in 2015.

His other former clubs include Stoke, Burnley, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest.

"I'm delighted to welcome Steve Cotterill to FGR. His record speaks for itself with 25 years of experience in all leagues of the EFL, spanning nearly 900 games," said owner Dale Vince.

"Steve knows what it takes and shares our determination to avoid relegation this season. Then build our way back up to League One and looking upward again.

"I'm sure our fans will welcome this appointment and Steve to our club."

Cotterill will take charge of training on Thursday and is expected to be in the dugout for their game against Accrington Stanley.

He becomes Forest Green's sixth manager since June 2022, following Rob Edwards, Ian Burchnall, Duncan Ferguson, David Horseman and Deeney.

Following Deeney's departure, Vince said the club were looking for "experience" in their next boss, after appointing a string of managers who had never managed in the EFL before.

Forest Green have failed to create any stability ever since winning promotion to League One for the first time in 2022 under Edwards, who subsequently left for Watford.

They struggled throughout the campaign in the third tier and were instantly relegated back to League Two.

Forest Green Rovers have appointed ex-Watford captain Troy Deeney as head coach following the departure of David Horseman by mutual consent.

Deeney, 35, has been working in a player-coach capacity since joining the League Two club in the summer.

Horseman, 39, spent only five months in charge and has left following the team's FA Cup exit to Blackpool.

Rovers have won only four league matches this season and sit 23rd in the table, five points from safety.

Forest Green owner Dale Vince said he needed to "act decisively to improve our performances and league position".

"Troy came to us to begin his career in coaching and take the next step of his career - this is happening sooner than expected but he's built strong relationships already with our staff, squad and fans - and is well placed for the challenge," said Vince.

"We'll strengthen our squad in the coming transfer window as well, to give ourselves the best chance of first securing our place in League Two before looking upward once more, toward League One and beyond."

Deeney spent 11 years as a striker with Watford after moving to Vicarage Road from Walsall in 2010, and went on to score 140 goals in 419 appearances as he twice helped the Hornets win promotion to the Premier League and led them to the 2019 FA Cup final.

He joined Forest Green after leaving Championship side Birmingham City in the summer and has scored four goals in 18 appearances this season while also working on the coaching staff at The New Lawn.

He becomes the club's fourth boss in 19 months since the departure of Rob Edwards in May 2022, after Ian Burchnall, Duncan Ferguson and Horseman.

His first game in charge will be Friday's visit of Gillingham.

"One thing I can assure everyone is that we will work our very hardest to bring this wonderful club back to success," said Deeney.

"This is an exciting new role with many challenges that I'll embrace, and there's a lot of work for us to do, which has already started."

The former Southampton academy coach was brought in following the club's instant return to the fourth tier this summer, after one season in League One.

However, Rovers have continually languished near the bottom of the table - not helped by raft of injuries to key players - and are fighting to avoid a second successive relegation and a return to non-league football.

Their last League Two win came on 28 October against Crawley. Friday's home game against Gillingham is the first of four fixtures over the festive period.

After the 3-0 loss by Blackpool on Tuesday, Horseman said he believed he could turn the team's fortunes around and still had the support of Vince.

Forest Green Rovers have named Southampton's B team boss David Horseman as their new head coach.

He takes over from Hannah Dingley, the first woman to manage a professional men's team in England, who has been in interim charge since 5 July.

Last season, Horseman was also Saints first-team coach under Ruben Selles.

"I'm grateful to Hannah for holding the fort for the club while we went through the complete recruitment process," said owner/chairman Dale Vince.

"Although she did not get the top job this time, it's undoubtedly been a valuable experience and a big step on her career path."

Dingley, who has a Uefa Pro Licence and initiated the club's girls academy which launched in 2021, took charge of the club's first pre-season fixture against non-league Melksham Town and a trip to Ireland.

She will also oversee this week's friendlies against Coventry City and Everton Under-21s, with Horseman and assistant Louis Carey taking up their roles on Thursday.
First female to manage a professional men's team says she wants to see more women in clubs
Previous Rovers boss Duncan Ferguson left the club the day before Dingley was appointed as caretaker, following the team's relegation to League Two.
Vince said Horseman had stood out from over 100 applicants to succeed Ferguson.
"We're delighted to have David join as our head coach, he brings a wealth of experience and a modern approach to the game which matches our own," he said.
"Louis and I have been lucky to be involved for a long time in professional football and study from some elite coaches which we will bring some ideas with us," he said.

Forest Green Rovers have named Hannah Dingley as their new caretaker boss, making her the first woman to manage a professional men's team in English football.

The League Two side sacked Duncan Ferguson on Tuesday after just six months in charge.

Forest Green announced Dingley, the club's academy head, would be put in caretaker charge of the first team.

Her first match in charge will be a friendly at Melksham Town on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old said: "I'm really excited for this next step of my career. Pre-season has just begun, and the full season kicks off very soon.

Forest Green's trailblazing academy manager Dingley on encouraging women into coaching
"It's an exciting time in football. I am grateful for the opportunity to step up and lead such a progressive and forward-thinking club."

She first joined the club in 2019 to take charge of the academy and remains the only woman to manage a men's English Football League academy.

Dingley, who was born and raised in Carmarthenshire, also initiated the club's girls academy which launched in 2021.

She has a Uefa Pro Licence and previously worked at Burton Albion

"Hannah was the natural choice for us to be first team interim head coach - she's done a fantastic job leading our academy and is well aligned with the values of the club," club chairman Dale Vince said

"It's perhaps telling for the men's game that in making this appointment on merit, we'll break new ground - and Hannah will be the first female head coach in English [men's] football."

'More than capable of coaching at a men's level'
Dingley spoke to BBC Points West in March about breaking down barriers in the sport.

"You've got a responsibility as the first to open the doors for others and to encourage others," she said.

"You always say if you don't see it, you're probably not going to be it. The fact that I do this I hope it encourages more females to come into coaching, into football, into different roles. I feel a great responsibility to talk about that."

She said at the time that she did not think it would be long until a woman took charge of a men's professional team.

"It will come in sooner than you think," Dingley said. "The success that the Lionesses are having, that Emma Hayes is having at Chelsea.

"There are others, really good female coaches out there who I have more than faith in would be more than capable of coaching at a men's level."

Former striker Ferguson made 273 appearances for the Toffees and also had two spells as their caretaker manager in 2019 and 2022.
As a player, Ferguson scored 73 goals for Everton in two spells from 1994 to 2006. He began his career at Dundee United and also played for Rangers and Newcastle United. He was also capped seven times by Scotland.

Newly promoted Forest Green Rovers have appointed Notts County boss Ian Burchnall as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old takes charge of the Gloucestershire club as they move up to League One for the first time.

He replaces Rob Edwards, who led the club to promotion and the League Two title before being appointed Watford manager earlier this month.

Burchnall had been at Notts County since March 2021 and led the team to fifth in the National League this year.

This season was the second successive time he had taken Notts County to the National League play-offs, although they were defeated by Torquay United in the semi-finals last year and by Grimsby Town at the same stage this season.

"I'm really delighted to sign at FGR and be part of what is an exciting chapter in the club's history," Burchnall said.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to come and lead the club and the challenge of football in League One was just too good to turn down, especially at a progressive and forward-thinking club."

Burchnall got his first taste as a manager working in Scandinavia's top tiers, first as assistant manager to former Sheffield United striker Brian Deane at Norwegian side Sarpsborg in 2012.

In 2017 he took over as manager at Viking FC, before replacing Graham Potter as boss of Swedish side Ostersunds FK a year later.

"We're all excited to welcome Ian to the club and look forward to our first season together in League One," said Dale Vince, Forest Green Rovers chairman.

When former Rovers boss Edwards left for relegated Premier League side Watford on 11 May, Vince said negotiations had taken place "behind our backs" - but he praised Notts County for their part in Burchnall's move.

"Big credit to Notts County for the way they handled this - between us we've shown how moves in football can still get done properly and above board."

A statement from the Notts County board said they already have a "ready-made shortlist" of candidates to replace Burchnall and that "negotiations are progressing well".
