Local businesswoman Michelle Harness has completed a takeover of Scunthorpe United from David Hilton.

Hilton took over in January but put the club up for sale last month and then withdrew all funding last week..

Harness worked as the club's commercial director for 15 years and was previously on the board.

BBC Radio Humberside understands talks are ongoing between the club and former owner Peter Swann to enable them to continue playing at Glanford Park.

After Hilton announced he would no longer be putting money into the club last week, they released a statement to say they would move their home games to Gainsborough Trinity's ground after this Saturday's match against Brackley.

However, Gainsborough said that this had been asserted "without their knowledge or consent".

Last week's announcement from Hilton also saw fans come together to raise over £50,000 to help cover unpaid wages.

"There are a lot of challenges and problems to overcome, but David has taken no fee for the club, and wiped all monies that he personally invested to enable this deal to happen," Harness said in a statement on the club's website.

"There is now a lot of work to do behind the scenes to get our great football club back on track, and that work starts immediately with the fantastic team we have working for us, starting with the appointment of a new board."

Scunthorpe, who were in the Championship as recently as 2011, have endured a dreadful period over the past five years.

They were relegated from League One in 2019 and then saw their 72-year spell in the Football League come to an end in 2022 after a campaign in which they won just four of 46 matches.

Owner David Hilton has withdrawn funding for Scunthorpe United, who will play games away from Glanford Park because of a land dispute.

Having already put the club up for sale, a statement said Hilton feels his position is "untenable", and is "actively seeking a way out".

The National League North club say they will leave Glanford Park after hosting Brackley on 7 October.

They said they will play home games 16 miles away at Gainsborough Trinity.

However, Gainsborough have since said Scunthorpe's statement was issued "without the knowledge or consent" of the club.

"Whilst the club has always been clear that any requests from Scunthorpe United to play fixtures at the KAL Group Stadium would be considered, this would always have to be done by due process which would involve both clubs and the ground owner," they said.

Glanford Park remains the property of former owner Peter Swann through land owners Coolsilk, while a trial is currently scheduled for January which will look at the validity of a sub-tenancy to use the venue.

"We can confirm that numerous parties have made contact with the club with a view to taking over, but faced with stadium issues, numerous litigation proceedings and winding up petitions no potential purchasers are looking to move forward," the Scunthorpe statement continued in relation to new ownership.

"This includes the consortium of local business people and supporters. The chairman and remaining board members have now set out a plan in order to very quickly make the club sustainable.

"An outside company will be bought in to work closely with the club's creditors to try and ensure all are paid in a timely and professional manner."

Hilton, who only took over from Swann in January, has developed a difficult relationship with supporters since taking on the ownership.

He sought to move training to Ilkeston as a cost-cutting measure, only to backtrack after supporter complaints.

It was also confirmed earlier this month that a winding-up petition was to be issued by His Majesty's Revenue & Customs.

Scunthorpe United manager Keith Hill says he is the right man to get the club back into the Football League but needs to be allowed to change a "terrible" culture at the club.

The Iron were relegated to the National League this season with just 26 points.

Their season ended with a 7-0 hammering at Bristol Rovers, who dramatically clinched promotion.

"I need to be able to change the culture," said Hill, who took over at Glanford Park in November.

"I want to be here, but I will not accept what I've had to deal with for the last six months. I will not accept the standards I've been presented.

"I need to be in total control of my budget, total control of player ins and outs, and then I should be judged."

Speaking to BBC Humberside, Hill accused his players of a lack of professionalism, including turning up late, and suggested he is ready to turn to the club's youngsters.

"We've got to make sure that the club builds a squad of players that represents the supporters' values," he said.

"We need the young players to set the standard. And the standard - not just on the matchday pitch, but the training pitch - has been very, very poor.

"The first P of professionalism is punctuality. Proper practice. Pride. You don't take shortcuts. If you take shortcuts you fail.

"There will be players who'll say it's my fault. It's not my fault - 100% not my fault. I try to manage players with honesty. Sometimes that honesty leaves me vulnerable.

"I'm expecting the better players - players with integrity - to support me. It's the most difficult experience I've ever had as a manager or as a player.

"The dynamics of the club have been terrible. When we got to January, that was an open door for players who thought they had a chance of leaving. I had players asking me on a regular basis up to January, 'can I leave? Can I leave?' And there were players we wanted to leave who refused to leave."

The experienced Hill was sacked by Tranmere last year, having previously managed Bolton and Barnsley and had two spells in charge at Rochdale.

He inherited a desperate situation at Scunthorpe, where Peter Swann announced last month he was standing down as chairman.

Swann, who installed his son Will as chief scout, has been heavily criticised by fans.

But Hill, who has managed just two wins from his 33 games in charge, losing 22 of them, is adamant the Swanns are not to blame for the club's demise.

"It's the culmination of a lot of things and I can't put it down to one fact," Hill said.

"If you want me to say that it's Peter Swann's fault or Will Swann's fault, I can categorically tell you 100% it isn't.

"There's a lot of people pushing for the finger to be pointed at the Swanns and it's 100% not [their fault]. They're genuine people who are still funding this club."

Hill added: "The club need to show bravery. They can throw me under the bus if they want, like most clubs do - I got thrown under the bus [at Tranmere] last season and I got thrown under the bus at Bolton. You clean a club up and then you get thrown out.

"But it needs cleansing. It needs somebody like me to make sure there's a successful future."

League Two club Scunthorpe United have appointed Notts County assistant boss Neil Cox as their new manager.

The ex-Aston Villa and Watford defender, 48, has succeeded Paul Hurst, who was sacked by the Iron in January after eight months in charge.

This is Cox's first job in full-time management having previously served as Neal Ardley's assistant at both AFC Wimbledon and Notts County.

Cox is from Scunthorpe and started his playing career with the club.

"It's been a long time since I left and I'm obviously over the moon to be back," he told the club website.

"It was the easiest decision I've ever made. I left 29 years ago and I really didn't want to go but I had no other choice at the time.

"I can't wait to get started and I'm raring to go. I want to get the town together and get everyone on board."

The Iron were relegated from League One on the final day of the season, with Andy Dawson in caretaker charge following Stuart McCall's departure.
Hurst, 44, won only one of his 14 Championship games in charge of Ipswich before being dismissed in October.
He had previously taken Shrewsbury to the League One play-off final and Checkatrade Trophy final in 2017-18.
