Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Charlton, south-east London. They currently compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. The club was founded on 9 June 1905 when a number of youth clubs in south-east London, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission, combined to form Charlton Athletic. Their home ground is the Valley, where the club have played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923–24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 and 1992, due to financial issues, and then safety concerns raised by the local council. The club's fans formed the Valley Party, nominating candidates to stand in local elections, in a bid to return the club to The Valley.
Charlton turned professional in 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. Since then the club has had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: 1936–1957, 1986–1990, 1998–1999, and 2000–2007. Historically, Charlton's most successful period was the 1930s, when the club's highest league finishes were recorded, including runners-up of the First Division in 1937. After World War II, Charlton reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing in 1946, and winning in 1947.
The club's traditional kit consists of red shirts, white shorts and red socks, and their most commonly used nickname is The Addicks. Charlton share local rivalries with fellow South East London clubs Crystal Palace and Millwall.

The match referee for this weekend’s televised trip to face Charlton Athletic at The Valley is David Webb.
We are seeing David for the second time this season, having had him officiated the Carabao Cup second round penalty victory over Hull City at Deepdale back in September.
That was his first game at Deepdale since 2016, when he had the whistle in PR1 for our 2-0 home win over Peterborough United in the middle of the 2015/16 campaign.
Last season he officiated two PNE games, the away matches at Birmingham City and Derby County.
Overall then he has refereed the Lilywhites on 12 occasions, some of the most memorable games including the FA Cup win at Wycombe Wanderers, when Kevin Davies scored a stunning strike from 35 yards, and a 3-2 home win over Crewe Alexandra in 2011 in the league cup.
Overall this season, he has taken charge of ten games, issuing 25 cautions and no red cards, with this being his first game officiating the Addicks in 2019/20.
He will be assisted at The Valley by assistants Graham Kane and Adrian Waters, whilst the fourth official will be Craig Hicks.
A rare visit to Charlton this century to take on a home side that has made a surprisingly good start to the season presently lie 9th under manager Lee Bowyer with a non too shabby home record.
Still have slight off field issues with their owner but all considering doing well. Will be difficult on Sunday in front of the cameras. We cannot afford to be as crap as we were in the first half last week or at the Mad Stad otherwise we will get beat.
Still without Clarke and Moult so suspect pretty much the same side that started against the bog dwellers last week.
Finally it would be remiss of me not to mention the finest side ever to play at the valley, Daltrey, Townsend, Moon and Entwistle in 1976 a concert that was even broadcast live on the Beeb just a pity this game is not starting at 5.15.
